I extend my deepest appreciation to the Trustees who work so hard to ensure that we remain fiscally sound. And, finally, I thank all of you, our friends of The Children’s Center because your continued generosity and support allows us to reach new heights in our quest to provide the highest caliber of mental health care available to families with very young children. In my 2006 letter to you, I shared the Board of Trustees’ decision to launch a $10 million capital and endowment campaign. I am thrilled to report that under the outstanding leadership of Jesselie and Scott Anderson, our campaign co-chairs, we have successfully raised over $7.4 million toward our $10 million goal. One hundred percent of our Board of Trustees has made incredibly generous donations and each Trustee has worked diligently to make this campaign a success. This campaign has allowed us to reach out to the community and, in doing so, we have been heartened by the enthusiastic reception and support of our Campaign for a New Children’s Center. This has been another spectacular year for The Children’s Center! After months of searching for the perfect location for our new home we successfully purchased the Oquirrh School property in October 2006. We have hired the firm of ajc architects to develop plans for the renovation and they have found that the building is a terrific fit for our services. We are particularly pleased that there will be ample room for expansion of services. From the Executive Director In 1962, housed in a renovated home near Sugarhouse Park, The Children’s Center was seeing over 150 children annual in our Therapeutic Preschool. 45 years later our buildings include a center adjacent to the University of Utah and another in Kearns. Our Kearns campus also includes the Eskuche Center for Foster Care. All three buildings have undergone significant renovations in order to keep pace with the continuous demands from the community. And now, once again, we are out of room and needing more space in order to expand services and programs in order to meet the needs of the “little kids with big problems” in our community. The demands for our help have increased nearly 400 percent since our earliest days. During this past year The Children’s Center received over 1,500 referrals from parents and caregivers desperate for our care. Some called because the staff at their child’s preschool suggested that their child was struggling to get along with peers. Other’s called because their child’s behavior seemed to be deteriorating in response to the increasing parental battles surrounding divorce. Some were court ordered because of sexual abuse, physical abuse or neglect. Even more overwhelming is the understanding that over the next decade, given current population estimates, over 17,000 (does this need a footnote) children from birth to age four, will be eligible for mental health services in Salt Lake County alone! Fortunately, our relocation to the Oquirrh School property in downtown Salt Lake City will enable us to meet the growing need of our community for the foreseeable future. 2
