Each subwoofer provides both digital 

and active analogue inputs, allowing 

them to be connected either to a 

Meridian digital surround controller or 

digital source with a digital coax output, 

or to an analogue preamplifier or

The subwoofers’ digital inputs employ 

96kHz/24bit digital to analogue 

conversion and accept inputs up to 

96kHz – including Meridian High 

Resolution (MHR) signals. If you are 

using the subwoofers with a digital 

source such as CD or DVD, these inputs 

allow signals to remain in digital form 

until the last possible stage. 

Separate power supplies

subwoofer’s precision electronic circuits,

The whole electronic assembly is 

supplied from a substantial toroidal 

transformer feeding high-quality, 

audiophile-grade capacitors. 

Optimised for both movies 

and music 

The subwoofers are based on 300mm 

(12in) high-efficiency long-throw custom 

bass drivers. The SW1600 uses a single 

driver, and the SW5500 uses two drivers 

in a single enclosure. In both cases, 

the enclosure is sealed for maximum 

flexibility of positioning. 

The speakers are driven by Class G high 

efficiency ultra-low output impedance 

amplifiers. The combination of idealised 

magnetic design, careful star earthing, 

and very fast output devices gives the 

amplifiers extremely low noise and 

fast bass, optimised for both music and 

movie soundtracks. 

Rigid cabinet design 

Each subwoofer is carefully constructed 

from 22mm MDF with inert basket 

bracing and bitumen damping to 

produce an ultra-rigid, damped cabinet 

that minimises colouration. 

The subwoofers are finished with 6mm 

annealed glass top-plates, and thick 

veneered MDF sides are bolted to the 

main cabinet, resulting in extremely low 

levels of cabinet resonance.

Applications 

The SW1600 and SW5500 can be 

used to complement Meridian DSP 

Loudspeakers in both stereo and 

surround systems. In addition, the 

analogue input capability makes them 

ideal for analogue systems too. 

A Meridian surround processor such 

as the G68 can handle several DSP 

loudspeakers, and the SW5500 is ideal 

as a mono subwoofer for a Meridian 

Digital Theatre system, in particular to 

give exciting cinema effects and added 

realism in DVD movies. 

The recommended configuration for 

music is to provide two subwoofers, 

one for each of the main left and right 

channels, for a superb stereo image. 

The SW1600 is ideal for this application. 

In a large system, multiple subwoofers 

can be employed to provide even more 

impressive effects.

with feet, spikes and castors, allowing 

maximum versatility of mounting and

For years, Meridian loudspeakers have 

been regarded as offering the highest 

performance available – the result of 

careful design, the highest-quality 

drivers and components, transparent 

crossovers and rigid, low-coloration 

enclosures in both Active and Digital 

Active designs. 

Now we have paid the same level of 

attention to the design of loudpeakers 

for installation purposes, including 

in-wall, flush-mount and on-wall 

configurations. These offer full Meridian 

performance for systems where the use 

of floor-standing models is impossible 

or inappropriate. 

The 300 Series consists of three ultraslimline 

systems for in-wall (surface 

grille) and flush-mount (completely

The 200 Series speakers are 2-way 

designs with an 8in (200mm) bass 

driver and pivoting tweeter, for

speakers, and not wall resonances. 

A white paintable low-resonance grille

of ultra-slimline wall speakers, each

G41 Powered Crossover/Amplifier 

The G41 powers 200 and 300 Series 

installation loudspeakers in Remote 

Active mode. It features active crossovers, 

switched balanced and unbalanced 

inputs, and employs the same lowfeedback 

topology as Meridian’s 

G55/56/57 amplifiers, which was 

developed from that used in the flagship 

DSP8000. 

Eight channels of approximately100W/8Ω 

(180W/4Ω) RMS amplification are 

provided, grouped into four pairs, each 

providing bass and tweeter outputs from 

a full-range input. 

The fourth channel pair can also be 

configured as two full-range amplifiers 

for driving a pair of passive loudspeakers, 

eg for surrounds. To do this, the righthand 

modular crossover card is removed 

and replaced by one providing additional 

full-range unbalanced inputs. 

Replacement labels identify the 

reconfigured output terminals (see rear 

panel illustration below). 

The crossover modules take the form of 

cards which can be inserted at the time 

of installation to configure the unit for 

the speakers in use, and an appropriate 

card is supplied with each loudspeaker. 

Modules are available for the 320, 330 

and 350, and each module includes a 

pair of LEDs that confirm the positive 

and negative power-rails are operative 

and identifies the crossover installed by 

means of the colour combination. 200 

Series units can use the crossover or can 

be driven in passive configuration with 

the fourth amplifier pair configured for 

two channels of full-range operation. 

Thermal, short-circuit and DC fault 

protection circuitry is included. The G41 

has soft start, fan output and trigger 

input. 

A unique feature of the G41 is a cablelength 

compensation switch. The 

amplifiers have a negative impedance to 

cancel out cable effects. This dramatically 

improves performance, tightening the 

bass response and giving significantly 

improved control and punch. Two switchselectable 

settings are provided, one 

for cables under 10m and the other for 

cables over 10m in length. A separate 

rear-panel switch is provided for each 

pair of amplifiers. 

Meridian Remote Active loudspeakers 

may also be driven by the C51 rackmount 

unit, part of our C Series custom

The Meridian MF10 digital projector 

offers extraordinary black reproduction 

capability, with 30,000:1 native contrast 

ratio. It also features a brand new 0.7in 

full high definition device and associated 

optical engine utilising advanced 

D-ILA technology. The impressive 

contrast ratio is obtained via the native 

capabilities of the engine, without the 

use of a dynamic iris, thus ensuring 

true black reproduction without loss of 

brightness. 

D-ILA is a particularly advanced approach 

to LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon) display 

technology which offers significant advances 

over other display systems. 

Unlike many other systems, which use a 

single display element and a colour wheel, 

which introduces flickering and other 

artefacts such as colour dithering and 

rainbow effects, the MF10 employs three 

individually-tuned 1920 x 1080 pixel D-ILA 

devices – one each for red, green and blue. 

D-ILA devices achieve a significant reduction 

in stray light by flattening the spaces 

between pixels and using new, advanced 

liquid crystals and orientation technologies. 

The optical engine also employs wire grid 

polarisers, which signficantly reduce light 

scatter into the projection lens, further 

contributing to improved contrast. 

In addition to a host of superb quality 

features, each Meridian MF10 projector 

is hand-tuned at our headquarters and 

manufacturing facility near Cambridge, 

England. Here, using specially-developed 

test and calibration routines, we precisely 

set gamma, colour temperature and 

other parameters, allowing the MF10 to 

dramatically exceed the performance of offthe-shelf 

projectors. 

Meridian has exclusive access to the inner 

workings of D-ILA, and using special 

software developed by William Phelps, we 

are able to unlock the full potential of this 

projector – particularly the ability to calibrate 

the individual Red, Green and Blue colour 

look-up tables (LUTs) that determine exact 

colour levels for each pixel. 

With full access to the projector’s processing 

system, we can perform a full calibration 

procedure, optimising not only gamma but 

also colour/grey scale, ensuring more natural 

colour and minimum artefacts. In addition, 

we provide the highest degree of accuracy 

with all available gamma selections. No other 

company or process has access to these 

capabilities. 

Superior colour rendition is made possible 

by an unusually broad colour space – the 

MF10’s colour rendering system exceeds the 

gamut of competing systems (see over).

MF10 

1080p High Definition Projector 

The standard motorised projection lens is a 

large-diameter all-glass assembly with 16 

elements in 13 groups. It is made by Fujinon 

Corporation, noted for their quality projection 

lenses. The lens minimises chromatic 

aberration effects and delivers maximum 

resolution by ensuring that individual pixels 

are all in focus on-screen. The 2x zoom 

capability permits a large, bright image even 

in smaller environments that do not allow for 

longer projector-to-screen distances. 

The projector also includes a special vertical 

stretch facility for the display of extra-widescreen 

images with the addition of a thirdparty

To make positioning of the projector in an 

installation as easy as possible, the MF10 

offers ±80% vertical and ±34% horizontal 

lens shift, and the unit may be table or 

ceiling mounted. Ease of installation is 

further enhanced by the front intake/exhaust 

arrangement of the low-noise fan system, 

which leaves only interconnects on the rear 

panel. In addition, the lamp is easily accessed 

via a side panel wherever the projector is 

mounted. 

The projector features HDMI 1.3 inputs, 

allowing 225MHz bandwidth and billions 

of colours, enhanced resolution and higher 

frame rates. The connectors are widelyspaced 

to allow the easy connection of 

professional cabling. The multiple input 

capability of the MF10 makes it particularly 

easy to install in a wide variety of systems. 

A Meridian DVD player like those in the

The G08.2 24-bit Upsampling CD Player 

takes Compact Disc playback to a higher 

level, with a heritage that includes the 

multiple award winning 588 and 800, and 

over two dozen optical disc players from 

1984 to the present day. 

The G08.2 features a robust new slot-loading drive 

and is CD-optimised, able to play virtually any Red 

Book CD, as well as CD-R and CD-R/W. It also 

plays the CD layer of an SACD disc. 

At the heart of the G08.2 are fully-integrated 

electronics and a computer-style CD/DVD-ROM 

drive. Although it normally runs at standard CD 

speed, the drive is capable of spinning the disc 

much faster, allowing multiple high-speed re-reads 

to ensure accurate recovery of data from even the 

most difficult disc. This feature alone provides ten 

times the error correction of a conventional CD 

player. 

Once the digital data stream has been recovered 

from the disc, powerful on-board digital signal 

processing (DSP) with a capability of an impressive 

150 MIPS (million instrcutions per second) upsamples 

the digital information from the 44.1 kHz, 

16-bit signal of conventional CD to 24 bits, and to 

a sample rate of 176.4 kHz for digital to analogue 

conversion to drive the analogue outputs, and 88.2 

kHz for the digital outputs. 

Upsampling enables filtering to take place far 

beyond the range of human hearing, as well as 

offering other, audible benefits, right across the 

audio band, for ultimate transparency from a CD

Meridian’s research team designed an 

exquisite new filter based on their original 

research – a filter with ‘apodizing-like’ 

qualities. It first appeared in the 808.2 and 

is now included in the G08.2. This filter 

system removes “ringing” and pre-echoes 

for superb clarity and imaging, and is so 

effective that it can even correct errors 

made in the recording or mastering stage – 

CDs played back on the G08.2 can sound 

even better than they did in the studio! 

The G08.2 also employs a triple buffering system 

to minimise jitter, and therefore maximise HF 

transparency and stereo image precision and 

stability. 

This, and the digital electronics as a whole, are 

driven by a new design of high-stability clocking 

system which further reduces jitter and ensures 

that the highest level of detail is recovered from 

a disc. All digital data are accurately re-clocked. 

Multiple power supplies ensure that digital and 

analogue circuitry are kept apart and can provide 

the required power when called upon to do so. 

The G08.2 player includes both balanced (on 

XLR connectors) and unbalanced (on phono 

connectors) 2-channel analogue outputs. S/PDIF 

(Sony/Philips Digital Interface, IEC 60958) digital 

outputs are also provided and both optical (Toslink/ 

EIAJ) and coax digital formats are included. In 

addition, the optical digital outputs can support 

surround-encoded bitstreams such as those 

derived from DTS-encoded CDs, which can be 

replayed via an external decoder. 

The G08.2 Upsampling CD player is an ideal 

complement to both analogue and digital systems. 

A typical analogue system is shown above, 

including a G02 Balanced Control Unit and G57 

high-power 2-channel amplifier, driving a pair of 

analogue passive speakers. The coaxial digital 

outputs will drive Meridian DSP loudspeakers 

directly to form a superb quality stereo CD replay

The G06.2 maximises audio quality by 

reducing jitter to extremely low levels, for 

a smooth open, well-defined sound and 

pinpoint stereo imaging. This is achieved 

by re-clocking the digital outputs and by a 

superb direct-coupled audiophile-quality 

output stage. 

The player utilises 192 kHz, 24-bit digital 

to analogue converters for the very highest 

analogue quality, while the internal circuitry 

includes a superb analogue design to 

complement the high-spec DACs and 

delivering 2V rms with less than –95dB noise 

and distortion. The result is exceptionally 

accurate stereo imaging, and a clear, open 

and authoritative sound. 

Both S/PDIF coaxial and TOSLink optical 

digital outputs are provided, and all audio 

cable interfaces are via gold-plated 

connectors. An RS232 serial port is provided 

for remote control operation. This port can be 

used to update the G06.2’s system software, 

thanks to Flash ROM storage. 

The G06.2 is supplied with the Meridian 

System Remote Plus backlit remote 

control. This controller not only operates 

all appropriate Meridian products; it can 

also be used to control the vast majority 

of components from other manufacturers, 

thanks to its built-in product library that 

includes literally hundreds of manufacturers. 

And if a product is not in the database, it can 

be added via the remote’s learning function.

The internal architecture of the G02 is 

balanced throughout, and the first thing that 

happens to an unbalanced input is that it is 

electronically balanced for maximum quality 

throughout the signal chain. 

The front-panel volume knob (press to mute) 

activates a specially-designed dual differentiallybalanced 

volume control circuit. This ensures 

perfect stereo tracking and full frequency range 

performance at all volume levels. 

The disc (turntable) input can be specified for 

either moving coil or moving magnet cartridge 

operation with the addition of appropriate 

factory-fitted phono modules. The sensitivity 

of each input can be individually adjusted as 

desired. 

Two sets of unbalanced stereo tape outputs are 

included on the rear panel, allowing maximum 

flexibility in the configuration of tape/decoder 

loops and multi-room capabilities. The outputs 

can be configured as a single balanced output 

with a suitable break-out cable. 

Two sets of main outputs are provided: the 

primary outputs are balanced on XLR Male connectors, 

while auxiliary unbalanced outputs are 

also included on phono connectors. All audio interface 

connectors are gold plated for maximum 

transparency. 

System setup in the G02 can be configured 

via the serial link, which can also be used for 

remote control applications.

rests, therefore, on over a quarter of a century 

of Meridian’s experience in the design and 

manufacture of exquisite-sounding analogue 

hi-fi components and systems. 

Including both a preamplifier and controller, the 

G01 stereo control unit provides no less than 

seven stereo analogue inputs plus an AM/FM 

tuner. The inputs are nominally designated Aux, 

CD, TV, Tape, Disc (turntable), DVD and VCR 

(though these designations can be changed). 

The disc input can be factory-configured for 

either moving coil or moving magnet cartridge 

operation: order the unit with the appropriate 

stereo input module. 

A front-panel volume knob (press to mute) 

activates a specially-designed dual differentiallybalanced

The G01 control unit is the perfect heart of a high-quality analogue stereo system. It is ideally

The Meridian DVP-2351 is a versatile 

high-definition video processor 

designed to deliver maximum image 

quality with powerful digital video 

processing to get the best out of 

any input signal, standard or high 

definition. 

The processor also acts as a central video 

switching system – ideal, as the processor 

is the perfect location for video source 

selection to be carried out. If the switching is 

in the projector, you need multiple cable runs 

to it; if it’s in the surround-sound processor, 

you risk degrading the audio quality with 

digital video noise. 

The DVP-2351 includes 12 video inputs – 

2 composite, 2 S-Video, 2 component, 1 

RGBHV and 4 HDMI – and 9 audio ins, 4 

HDMI, 2 assignable coax and 2 assignable 

optical digital ins, and an assignable 

analogue pair. 

The processor features output presets for 

4:3, 16:9, 2.35:1 and custom, and Meridian’s 

Schneider Cinemascope lens system is 

directly supported. The processor offers 

separate display and screen adjustments, 

plus underscan adjustment to compensate 

for display overscan where present. 

The processor offers fully programmable 

picture controls with separate non-volatile 

memories for each input and input resolution. 

An intuitive on-screen display is provided 

and an easily-read 2-line x 20-character 

front panel display. Ten display profiles are 

provided plus output resolution, sync type, 

colour space, frame lock and gamma output 

settings. 35 test patterns are built-in. 

Operation is via the front panel controls, IR 

remote (discrete codes available) or RS232. 

The DVP-2351 features a wide range of 

features designed to deliver the very highest 

quality from any input signal. Mosquito noise 

reduction reduces noise that may appear at 

the edges of compressed images, while fine 

detail enhancement extracts the detail from 

lower resolution sources. Edge enhancement 

sharpens edge transitions in images without 

adding ringing effects. 

A precision 10-bit motion, edge and sourceadaptive 

deinterlacing system is employed 

on 480i, 576i and 1080i sources, while 

poor-quality external deinterlacing can be 

undone and re-done to a much greater level 

of precision. De-interlacing includes five-field 

motion adaptive technology and edgeadaptive 

technology for smooth diagonals. 

The unit will lock to any cadence and 

includes forced 2:2 for reliable PAL 

deinterlacing, plus forced 3:2 mode for blue

The DSP8000 features a new digital 

upsampling filter system that delivers an 

impressive improvement in the sound 

of standard sample rate (44.1/48 kHz) 

recordings. The filter is so advanced it can 

even clear up some flaws in the original 

recording. In addition, there is a new buffering 

system for even lower jitter. Overall the result 

is superb imaging and transparency. 

The cabinet 

Each DSP8000 loudspeaker is built around 

a precision manufactured cabinet, which 

uses innovative design techniques to give 

exceptionally low coloration and amazing 

mid-range transparency. The head assembly 

is a sealed enclosure fabricated from curved 

pressure-laminated panels, each using 

multiple layers of selected woods and metal 

to provide high stiffness and damping. 

Its narrow tapered shape offers optimum 

dispersion across a wide listening area. It is 

supported on the bass enclosure by three 

machined feet. 

Like the head unit, the bass cabinet is 

constructed from interlaminated panels with 

extensive bracing. The front panel is 6mm 

glass and incorporates a window for the 

matrix display and infrared remote control 

sensor.

In addition to the vertical units 

described here, a horizontal ported design is 

available, the DSP7200HC, typically designed for use 

in home theatre applications. 

The DSP7200’s four internal 100-watt 

amplifiers are balanced-input, high-current 

designs employed in the flagship DSP8000, 

with heatsinking on the extruded back panel. 

Two amps drive a pair of refined 8-inch, longthrow 

bass units with a new basket design, 

separately housed in their own optimised 

enclosure in the base of the speaker system. 

Meanwhile the 6-inch midrange unit is the 

same driver used in the flagship DSP8000, 

employing a cone made from a uniquely 

light and stiff combination of polymers to 

give unparalleled transparency. This and the 

1-inch composite-dome tweeter, (the latter 

deployed with Meridian’s ‘short-horn’ loading), 

are each driven by their own amplifiers and 

operate from a second, completely separate 

enclosure atop the bass/electronics module. 

The cabinet is crafted from Meridian’s 

innovative, multi-layered ‘sandwich’ of 

selected woods and metal, formed in curved, 

pressure-laminated panels that produce 

almost perfectly vibration- and resonancefree 

enclosures, for unmatched freedom 

from coloration. The exteriors of these 

unique cabinets are painstakingly finished 

in Meridian’s trademark gloss piano-lacquer 

black or silver colours, with additional colours 

available to special order.

Cabinet design 

An enhanced basket design with sturdy 

clamp rings delivers the very best 

performance from the drivers, which are 

chosen specifically for their sound. The 

stylish, curved and tapered cabinet both 

increases stiffness and improves HF 

dispersion for a more natural top end. 

Cabinet construction is of 19mm thick multilayer 

materials, with proprietary heavy poured 

resin, and is inherently stiff with superior 

geometry and damping. 

The dual bass drivers are 160mm long-throw 

composite designs and the cabinet vents 

through an extremely effective rear port 

design. This configuration, along with active 

operation and DSP correction, delivers a 

combination of smooth, powerful bass and 

very low mid-range colouration. The tweeter 

is a 25mm aluminium-dome, silver-wire 

design. 

The DSP5200 is available in vertical 

format in pairs, as a single vertical centre 

loudspeaker, or in a horizontal centre-channel 

version. 

Inside the DSP5200 

Each speaker incorporates an electronics 

panel in the rear part of the cabinet. The 

speaker accepts digital signals and has two 

inputs, placed at the base of the cabinet for 

maximum neatness and ease of installation. 

The electronic design of the DSP5200 is 

entirely new, and takes advantage of the 

latest advances in component design as well 

as techniques and approaches employed on 

the DSP8000. 

The latest miniaturized surface-mount 

components add control and improve linearity, 

while the advanced high-value capacitors 

allow the power supply and its low-field true 

toroidal transformer to be placed closer to 

power amplifiers, offering lower inductance 

and improved power performance. 

The input receiver uses a FIFO (First In First 

Out) memory buffer for the lowest possible 

jitter from almost any source. At the heart 

of the 5200 is a new DSP system based 

around a 150MIPS processor, running brand 

new software. 

A built-in circuit monitoring system handles 

both thermal and bass protection, without 

compromising either sound or protection 

capability. 

High resolution double-precision processing 

and upsampling, coupled with the latest 

192kHz, 24-bit DACs, ensure that the digital 

signal path offers true recording studio 

quality. 

The three 75W amplifiers are based on 

those in the DSP8000, with the latest errorcorrecting 

auto-biasing technology which 

runs the amplifiers with maximum linearity

processor, and includes the award-winning 

Meridian Room Correction system to manage 

room reverberation and improve the overall 

listening experience. 

At the heart of the C61R is a powerful DSP 

engine consisting of five Motorola 56367s 

and a 56371 running at 150MHz – delivering 

900MIPS (million instructions per second). 

Processing is performed at high sample 

rates and with 48-bit precision throughout, 

ensuring that all filtering, processing and 

other operations are carried out far above 

the limits of human hearing. The C61R 

is thus ideal for the very latest in digital 

audio. For superior audio quality, incoming 

analogue signals are converted to 24-bit, 

high-sample-rate digital data via multibit 

Delta-Sigma converters as soon as they 

enter the processor, and all digital signals are 

reclocked to minimize jitter and maintain total 

data integrity. 

The C61R includes two 6-channel S/PDIF 

digital inputs (coax), four stereo Toslink 

optical inputs, and six stereo coax digital 

inputs. There is also a USB Audio input, 

allowing a computer system to be hooked 

up directly for audio replay, the processor 

being seen as an external audio device by 

the computer. In addition, there’s a 6-channel 

analogue input, and five stereo analogue 

ins. All the inputs are reconfigurable for an 

incredible degree of flexibility, and analogue 

inputs are converted to digital at high 

resolution – 24-bit, 96kHz. 

The C61R combines controller and surround 

processor functions, meeting the latest 

THX Ultra 2 specifications and including 

the latest superb-quality AAC, MPEG, DTS, 

Dolby, Trifield and Ambisonic (both 2-channel 

UHJ and B-Format, to 4, 5, 6 or 7 speakers) 

decoding. The decoders consist almost 

exclusively of our own code, giving them 

superior integration with the Meridian design 

philosophy, as well as superior performance.

format, speaker layout and encoding of the 

incoming signal. This capability is enhanced 

by MHR SmartLink, which provides a digital 

link between a Meridian optical disc player 

and processor, carrying explicit information 

about the nature of the datastream. 

You can also store separate user parameters 

for each source (such as DVD) depending 

on whether the incoming signal is stereo 

or surround, so that any source material is 

played with the DSP mode of your choice. 

The C61R features eight analogue outputs 

for front, rear, centre and sub connections, 

plus two additional outputs for other 

applications. Ten digital surround outputs are 

provided, including front, rear, side, centre/ 

sub and again include an additional output 

pair. 

The C61R can be configured with a powerful 

Windows graphical set-up application 

(downloadable from the Meridian web site), 

which allows access to all the unit’s functions 

and configuration. 

However, the C61R can also be configured 

extensively from the front panel, thanks to 

the comprehensive ‘soft-key’ based user 

interface like that employed on Meridian’s 

G Series components. ‘Wizards’ lead you 

through the configuration procedure, allowing 

a powerful degree of customization without 

having to hook up a computer. 

The C61’s firmware can be updated via serial 

link with files downloaded for the Meridian

The C51 powers 200 and 300 Series 

Remote Active installation loudspeakers. 

It features active line-level crossovers, 

switched balanced and unbalanced inputs, 

and employs a powerful new amplifier 

design which enables multiple channels of 

high-level amplification to be combined in 

a compact unit without excessive heat. 

Ten channels of approximately100W into 

8Ω (160W into 4Ω) RMS amplification are 

provided, grouped into five pairs, each 

providing bass and tweeter outputs from 

a full-range input. 

The crossovers take the form of plug-in 

modules which can be inserted at the time 

of installation to configure the unit for 

the speakers in use. An appropriate card is 

supplied with each loudspeaker. Modules 

are currently available for the A320, A330 

and A350, and each module includes a 

pair of LEDs that confirm the positive and 

negative power-rails are operative and 

identifies the crossover installed by means 

of the colour combination. 

Thermal, short-circuit and DC fault protection 

circuitry is included. The C51 has soft 

start, fan output and trigger input. 

The front panel includes five sockets for 

installation of the crossover cards, which 

can be accessed by unscrewing the transparent 

smoked access cover. 

Front-panel indicators take the form of 

blue LEDs for main power and for each 

channel, arranged in high/low pairs so 

that the status can be instantly assessed. 

The rear panel is divided into five channel 

pairs identified as HF (tweeter) and LF 

(bass). A single full-range input per channel 

pair may be switch-selected between 

unbalanced (gold-plated phono connector) 

and balanced (XLR3F). 

In addition to the power input socket and 

power switch, the rear panel also offers 

a 3.5mm jack socket for connection of an 

industry standard trigger input (5–30V, AC 

or DC) for remote operation, and a 3.5mm 

jack socket for the connection of a 12V DC 

fan system. This output is controlled automatically 

according to temperature.

The Meridian C50 is a ten-channel power 

amplifier designed for installation applications. 

It features an innovative new Class 

D amplifier design which produces minimal 

heat, even at high power outputs, as 

well as delivering extremely high audio 

quality. 

The amplifier design offers a very low output 

impedance and a load-independent 

frequency response that is flat up to 

20kHz and falls off slowly above that. THD 

and noise are extremely low and effectively 

independent of frequency. 

The C50 features an unbalanced input 

on gold-plated phono connector, and a 

balanced input via XLR3-F connector, for 

each channel plus a pair of gold-plated 

terminals per channel. Each channel will 

deliver 100 watts into 8 ohms or 160W 

into 4 ohms. 

A temperature-controlled fan output is 

provided to operate 12v fan systems. An 

industry standard trigger input is also provided, 

suitable for AC or DC operation in 

the range 5–30V.

Meridian DSP5500 

The DSP5500 is a single-box DSP loudspeaker, designed to provide 

performance similar to the highly popular DSP6000. This new model is a frontfacing 

format that can be effectively built into system cabinets – DSP functions 

are provided to correct the frequency response in a number of locations. A 

unique removable wood and steel side panel arrangement allows for easy 

colour changes or custom finishes. The side panels are bolted in place; in 

addition to providing magnetic shielding, the resulting solid, stiff cabinet 

provides massive acoustic damping, giving the speaker remarkable mid-range 

transparency. 

Acoustic system and format 

The DSP5500 is a powerful 3-way active acoustic reflex system. The bass 

system uses two 200mm long-throw composite bass drivers. The cabinet vents 

through a floor-level wide-area coupling slot; this configuration – along with the

The mid-range is mounted in a separate enclosure and uses a custom 160mm 

polypropylene driver. The tweeter is the Meridian 25mm aluminium-dome,

The main cabinet is constructed from high-density MDF. A unique ‘sandwich’ 

construction method clamps sheet steel all over the cabinet sides between the 

main cabinet and the real wood veneer side panels. This technique results in a 

very inert cabinet and provides exceptional magnetic screening – allowing the 

DSP5500 to be placed immediately next to small or large TVs. The top of the 

cabinet has an attractive 4mm plate-glass top. 

Electronic system 

Each speaker incorporates an electronic panel in the rear part of the cabinet. 

The speaker accepts digital signals and there are two inputs. The input receiver 

uses a FIFO memory buffer for the lowest possible jitter from almost any 

source. 

The crossovers, equalisation, tuning for a number of locations including cabinet 

installation, protection and tone controls are all implemented in a 100MHz 

Motorola Digital Signal Processor (DSP) inside each speaker. The DSP feeds 

carefully tailored individual signals to the bass, mid and tweeter DACs. The 

DSP5500 uses four Meridian Class-A discrete 75W low-distortion power 

amplifiers to individually power the drivers. The electronics are powered by a 

high-current toroidal transformer through a custom high-speed power supply.

The 3100 series from Meridian 

represent new benchmarks in the 

development of compact, highperformance 

active loudspeakers. 

The DSP3100 DSP loudspeaker and 

its active analogue counterpart, 

the M3100, are designed for use 

as bookshelf or stand-mounted 

loudspeakers. Specially-designed 

aluminium stands are available that 

may be sand-filled for maximum 

stability and to minimize any impact 

on sound quality. The vertical units 

also include universal wall bracket 

mountings for additional flexibility in 

location. The horizontal centre unit is 

magnetically-shielded. 

3100s are tonally similar to other 

Meridian loudspeakers and as a result 

they are ideal for use, for example, 

as surrounds in a Meridian system. 

They are equally suited for use in a 

smaller stand-alone system in a study 

or bedroom, and can be used as 

second zone speakers in a Meridian 

multi-room environment. The DSP 

version features S/PDIF digital inputs 

at up to 96kHz while the analogue 

version includes switched balanced 

and unbalanced inputs, so either can 

also be used as high-end computer

Extremely accurate characteristics make 

either 3100 version eminently suitable 

for studio monitoring applications, 

particularly as a near-field or surround 

monitor in recording and mastering 

facilities: the DSP3100 accepts standard 

digital audio at sample rates up to 24- 

bit, 96kHz. 

Construction 

The DSP3100’s distinctive cabinet is 

made from braced wood with piano- 

lacquered ends and aluminium sidepanels 

bonded for rigidity. 

The 3100 offers extremely low coloration, 

and this is partially a result of this 

cabinet construction. Wood tends to 

vibrate at lower frequencies, where 

aluminium is very stable; conversely, 

aluminium tends to resonate at higher 

frequencies while wood does not. 

Combining the two by bonding them 

together tends to cancel out vibration 

across the range. The cabinet is further 

damped with bitumen, leading to an 

enclosure that is exceedingly dead. 

Cosmetic finishes available are black 

or silver, matching Meridian’s G Series 

components (bead-blasted, brightened 

and anodised). 

The vertical units feature a 2-way rearported 

enclosure, while the horizontal 

centre is a 2½-way closed box design. 

Featuring high-efficiency long-throw 

6in (160mm) (vertical model) or dual 5 

¼ in (120mm) (horizontal model) bass 

drivers with doped carbon fibre cones 

and cast alloy baskets, the 3100 also

Meridian has established an unequalled reputation for outstanding use of digital audio 

and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology in our products. 

The 861, rated Class ‘AAA’ by Stereophile Guide to Home Theater, inherits Meridian’s 

original Surround DSP pedigree and adds to it significant additional DSP power, a higher 

degree of control sophistication and outstanding audio and conversion stages. 

The 861’s card-based architecture also brings the potential for handling more than 8 

channels and for decoding future surround formats. 

Of course, 861 makes a perfect front end for the ‘Class A’ rated Meridian Digital 

Theatre, where the 861 can receive super-high-resolution digital signals in MHR 

SmartLink format from a Meridian optical disc transport such as the companion 800. 

Movie sound 

Dolby Digital (AC-3) is the most common sound format on DVD (and LaserDisc, for 

which an optional demodulator card is available). The unique Meridian Dolby Digital 

decoder delivers the highest-quality sound of which this format is capable, and passes 

the most extreme tests. The 861 also decodes DTS signals from DVD – as well as DTS surround 

CDs and LaserDiscs. MPEG Surround is another audio format for DVD, satellite 

broadcasts and computer multimedia, and the MPEG decoder provided in 861 is the 

best sounding so far. 

Music formats 

Meridian’s 861 uses carefully crafted processing to get the maximum benefit from highprecision 

PCM inputs. The 861 accepts multiple input channels of 24-bit, 96kHz sampling 

PCM, and gives the maximum resolution on these signals. The processor also performs 

high-resolution up-sampling on signals coming in at lower sampling rates, de-jittering 

them and significantly improving their audio quality. 

What makes 861 so special? 

The single most important feature in all our DSP products – including the 861 – is the 

incredibly high standard we set for sonic performance. 

Another differentiating feature is that instead of using chips that have their firmware 

irrevocably ‘burned into’ them, Meridian’s signal processing is software based, and 

therefore can be improved or modified in future. For example, Dolby and DTS encoding, 

and THX specifications have advanced a great deal since the initial standards were 

set; DVD-Audio also brings new requirements. Meridian’s solution gives the customer 

exceptional value over the years to come – a Meridian 800 Series system does not go 

out of date.

Most important, however, is the provision of improved sound by fitting a highly accurate, 

24-bit decoding algorithm right at the heart of the world’s best sounding surround 

decoder. Crude solutions – like outboard decoders with six analogue outputs, or 

multiple plug-in third-party decoder cards – can never remotely approach the sound, 

function or facilities of the fully-integrated Meridian 861 architecture. 

System integration 

With the profusion of formats that may appear at the inputs of a decoder, there is 

room for confusion. However, the 861 continually monitors the digital input and automatically 

loads the correct decoding software for the format, speaker layout and 

encoding of the incoming signal. This capability is enhanced by MHR SmartLink, which 

provides a digital link between a Meridian optical disc player and processor, carrying 

explicit information about the nature of the datastream as well as encrypted high-resolution 

digital signals from DVD-Audio – the first system of its kind to be approved. 

You can also store separate user parameters for each source (such as DVD) depending 

on whether the incoming signal is stereo or surround. 

THX? Naturally! 

New THX specifications like Ultra 2 have a huge amount to offer in the multichannel 

surround replay environment. The 861 has all the signal processing in place to comply 

with the latest THX requirements. The front channels carry re-equalisation; the surrounds 

use a timbre-match curve and a sophisticated de-correlation technique. 

Bass management and protection 

Movie signals have the potential to require a 12dB increase in bass power handling in a 

system. Not only can the LFE (Low-Frequency Effects – the ‘0.1’ in ‘5.1’) channel convey 

10dB more bass, but potentially this can coincide with full bass level in the other five 

channels. Although the Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG encoders limit the total bass level 

to +15dB, the resulting bass energy can still be incredibly demanding for even the very 

best systems – and equally important – may be disastrous for other, less capable, speakers. 

The Meridian 861 incorporates a highly sophisticated series of bass protection schemes 

for Digital Surround formats. The user can control the overall amount of LFE added in. 

In addition, the 861 has a bass limiting function (adjusted in Setup) which limits the 

total amount of bass passed to the system. 

As well as the overall bass protection, the 861 can monitor all speaker feeds. A sophisticated 

DSP function determines how hard each individual speaker is working and compares 

that to a capacity rating measured for each speaker when the system is installed, 

by means of a calibration routine that actually tests the speaker’s capabilities. If the signal 

demands more bass than a speaker can supply, a proprietary, psychoacoustically 

optimised limiting filter momentarily and elegantly reduces the load on that speaker. 

This unique protection method means you can get the most out of all the speakers in 

the room without any fear of damage or unpleasant overload noises. 

Sample rates and de-Jittering 

The 861 embodies the very latest developments in digital audio, including high samplerate 

capability throughout and DVD-Audio digital interfacing at up to 192kHz. 

Meridian, famous for their smooth-sounding digital-audio components, have made a 

major breakthrough with a memory-based de-jittering system that renders the processor 

almost entirely immune to input-signal quality – making it by far the sweetest and 

most open sounding controller that Meridian has built to date. Digital inputs such as 

Compact Disc and Dolby Digital (if derived from an 800 or 598 with digital outputs) are 

upsampled to 24-bit, 96kHz sampling and de-jittered by a powerful 150MIPS DSP 

processor and FIFO memory buffer, while analogue signals are transferred into the digital 

domain via superb-quality high-sample-rate 24-bit Delta-Sigma A/D converters. 

861 Overview 

The architecture of the 861 allows for wide flexibility – future sources, formats and features 

can be handled by upgrading software and/or cards. 

Inputs 

The 861 is a full-system controller preamp that provides seamless control of up to 12 

analogue or digital audio, and up to 12 video, sources. The Tape cards provide additional 

internal A/D and D/A converters to give full support for both tape recorders and an 

extensive 2- and 3-zone multiroom capability in analogue or digital formats. 

By providing digital as well as analogue inputs, the 861 can give radically higher sound 

quality for sources that are originally digital – like CD, DVD and especially DVD-Audio. 

As well as accepting multichannel digital audio, the 861 will handle SPDIF-encoded 

Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG from sources like DVD, Satellite and LaserDisc. 

Processing 

The Meridian 861 is a digital processor and all signals are handled within the digital 

domain. The processing engine can consist of between 2 and 10 modular processor 

cards, each offering an astonishing 300 MIPS of processing power and housing multiple 

ultra-fast 48-bit processors with high-speed cache memory.

In each DSP core, the incoming signals are processed using a variety of proprietary algorithms 

and up to a dozen output signals are generated. These signals can be used to 

feed a number of speaker layouts, ranging from 2- to 9-speaker stereo/surround with 

multiple subwoofers (with adjustable crossover parameters). 

The on-board algorithms include Meridian’s own highly transparent Dolby Pro Logic II 

and Dolby Digital implementations, MPEG Surround, DTS, THX extensions, TV Logic and 

a variety of award-winning music programs including Trifield and Ambisonics. 

Room Correction 

From Version 4 onwards, Meridian’s 861 offers a powerful additional feature: Meridian 

Room Correction. The Room Correction system employs a special computer program 

that uses the 861 to measure a room’s resonances with a simple microphone. It then 

computes digital filters to control the resonances, or “modes”, and uploads them to the 

861, where different sets of filters can be associated with different loudspeaker layouts 

and profiles. The result is a dramatic improvement in the sound of a listening room. 

Outputs 

The 861’s outputs can be provided as digital signals to feed Meridian DSP Loudspeakers, 

or as variable analogue outputs using a proprietary on-board 24-bit resolution D/A conversion 

method – or as a mixture of both. 

Video control and OSD 

The Meridian 861 provides broadcast-grade video switching options for monitors, projectors 

and video tape routing. The comprehensive setup and customisation facilities 

allow the user to link any video and audio combination to the 12 sources (accessed 

from Source switching on the front panel or the remote control). 

In addition to providing high-quality video switching, the 861 has the ability to give 

‘help’ and ‘system control’ feedback information via an On-Screen Display. 

Video formats supported via optional cards include Composite, S-Video, Component 

(interlaced and de-interlaced/progressive) and RGB. 

Standard and optional cards 

Each 861 – available as a table-top box, or in a rack-mountable version with or without 

cover – is factory fitted with a backplane that has slots for both digital audio and video 

cards, a highly sophisticated power supply and a selection of 800 Series cards, the total 

number of these being dependent on the combination being installed.

previously impossible 10 megapixels – 

exceeding the resolution even of commercial 

digital cinema projectors – and the 810 

Reference Video Scaler, a special processor 

designed to optimise the imaging of HD 

and standard resolution inputs for the vast 

new possibilities offered by a 10 megapixel 

projection environment. 

The result is a system that, Meridian believes, 

represents the most realistic home theatre 

performance in the world. 

Using a brand new light engine, the Meridian 

810 Reference Video Projector offers 

an effective resolution of 4096 x 2400 

pixels, or 9,830,400 pixels. In comparison, 

a conventional HDTV image at 720p 

represents just one megapixel, while full-spec 

HD (1080p) is still only twice that. 

The Meridian 810 Reference Video Projector 

also has extremely high light output capability. 

Powered by a PKI Xenon lamp, the projector 

is capable of delivering up to 4000 lumens, 

enough to light even the very largest grey 

or white screen to the SMPTE standard

Calibration: the key to quality 

Trained staff at Meridian’s dedicated facilities 

individually calibrate each projector in a 

procedure that takes over four days to 

complete, mainly as a result of the sheer 

number of pixels to be calibrated. Different 

calibration steps require different groupings 

of pixels to be considered: for example flat 

field calibration is carried out for every group 

of four adjacent pixels; other parameters 

may require adjustment at the individual pixel 

level. The 810’s calibration technology was 

developed exclusively for Meridian by William 

Phelps. 

It is not sufficient to calibrate a projector 

in isolation – especially one that offers 

such a high-resolution, high-quality image. 

Instead, the projector and its accompanying 

scaler are considered as a complete, 

indivisible system – for example, different 

calibration procedures are carried out to 

suit Standard and High Definition signals; 

the scaler determines the signal format 

and automatically activates the appropriate 

calibration profiles in the projector. 

In addition, calibration bears in mind the 

conditions in the viewing environment. The 

aim of a projector is not to get the maximum 

light on to the screen: on the contrary, most 

dedicated home cinema rooms are darkened, 

and it is all too easy, with a powerful 

projection system, to get an image that is too 

bright – which apart from losing visual detail 

can lead to a tiring viewing experience. 

The correct approach is to standardise the 

amount of light reflected from the screen. 

This is the method employed by the Society 

of Motion Picture and Television Engineers 

(SMPTE), and used throughout the film 

industry. Their standard requires a light 

level of a nominal16 foot-Lamberts to be

it will be used. The installation contractor 

provides Meridian with full details of the 

operating environment including the 

specifications and colour of the screen (the 

810 will support both grey and white screens, 

though the latter is recommended), as the 

reflected light level depends on several 

factors, including the throw length and 

the gain of the screen, as well as the light 

brightness. The 810 light output is controlled 

as part of a calibration process that meets 

international cinema standards every step of 

the way. 

The calibration of the 810 projector is 

therefore part of an integrated installation 

and configuration process, including every 

aspect of the home cinema environment. 

Calibration is often a multi-dimensional 

process. For example, a conventional setup 

approach simply aligns a projector’s white 

reference to a given colour temperature. 

But colour temperature alone does not tell 

you how accurate the colour rendering is. 

Only one point in the colour measurement 

coordinate system (D65) is actually correct – 

and our projectors are calibrated specifically 

to that point. The optimisation process 

provides both accurate colour temperature 

and Gamma tracking. 

Similarly, it is not enough just to set up a 

projector to give a uniformly white screen at 

full output. It has to remain uniform across 

different luminance levels. In the 810, the flat 

field uniformity is superbly aligned for virtually 

zero deviation for an extraordinarily wide 

range of luminance values. 

The fundamental intention behind the 

Meridian 810 Reference Video System is to 

give you, the viewer, the impression of looking 

through a window into the cinematographer’s 

world, with all its detail and threedimensionality: 

and calibration is an important 

part of achieving that goal. 

If you forget that you are looking at a screen 

illuminated by a complex chain of art and 

technology, and instead are connected 

directly to the film-maker’s visual imagination, 

then – and only then – have we truly 

succeeded. And this is exactly what you 

will experience with the 810. At last, the 

cinematographer’s dream is realised. 

810 Scaler completes the system 

To display an image with a resolution of 

10 megapixels requires some very special 

scaling. To meet this requirement, Meridian 

has developed the 810 Reference Video 

Scaler. 

Where some scaling technologies still 

rely on copying adjacent pixels to handle 

upconversion, the 810 scaler is fully 

interpolative, and offers a significantly 

higher level of processing. A brand new 

design, featuring Marvell’s powerful Qdeo ® 

processing technology, the scaler converts 

any digital source (480i to 1080p) up to full 

10 megapixel resolution. Its quiet and natural 

video processing produces images that 

are free from noise and devoid of artefacts 

whether operating in 4:3, 16:9 or 2.35:1 

modes.

The 810 scaler includes a new class 

of adaptive video format conversion 

technologies, accepting video resolutions 

from 480i to 1080p, 24–60 frames per 

second. 

Incorporated in the technology is a 

complete set of noise and artefact 

reduction technologies. Per-pixel noise and 

compression artefact reduction removes 

noise typically inherent in digital video, while 

per-pixel motion-adaptive 3-D de-interlacing 

removes jaggies and eliminates feathering. 

Marvell’s Adaptive Contrast Enhancement 

(ACE) and Intelligent Color Remapping (ICR) 

render rich and vivid images, optimising 

texture, detail, edges, contrast and colour, 

providing a consistent, immersive viewing 

experience for all types of content. 

Projector and scaler are operated as a 

single system. Serial data commands 

flow between the two units to select the 

appropriate projection and image processing 

parameters at both ends of the chain, so that 

the image will always be at its best, whether 

it is receiving it from DVD, HDTV, Blu-ray 

Disc or alternative sources. The projector is 

also configured from the scaler interface, 

which includes a built-in configuration web 

server, accessed via the scaler’s Ethernet 

connection. 

The scaler accepts both HDMI and DVI 

inputs and delivers a quad DVI path to 

the projector. In addition the unit features 

Meridian comms for full integration with a 

Meridian Digital Theatre system, RS232 

and USB maintenance ports for firmware 

upgrades (the latter allowing an update to be 

loaded via a memory stick) and an RS232 

connection to the projector. 

The scaler is a rack-mounting unit in the 

same style as Meridian’s existing C Series of 

installation products and includes a vacuum 

fluorescent front-panel display with soft 

buttons that can be used to operate and 

configure the unit. Modelled on Meridian’s 

successful G Series user interface, the 

display labels the buttons according to 

context. 

Complete projection systems 

The Meridian 810 Reference Video System 

is available as a package consisting of 

both projector and scaler, which will not be 

available separately. Four different packages 

are offered, featuring lens systems with 

differing throw lengths. Short, Medium and 

Long-Throw packages include a special 

motorized 2.35:1 (Cinemascope®) lens 

assembly, while a Very Short Throw package, 

designed for back-projection and simulator 

applications, will also be available.

1984 

Meridian MCD and Pro-MCD 

Meridian’s first CD player, the MCD, based 

on a Philips chassis with completely custom 

analogue circuitry, was the world’s first 

audiophile CD Player. Its successor, the 

Pro-MCD shown here, included a separate 

custom-designed power supply, DAC and 

oscillator, mounted underneath the transport.

The idea of separating the transport from 

the rest of the player – to minimise jitter 

and other distortion from the mechanism 

– was developed to produce the world’s

The highly successful 200 Series included 

several CD players. Using different DACs as the 

technology developed, the 208 was a landmark 

in Meridian’s CD player development, with up 

to 20-bit conversion capability and preamplifier

including Meridian’s first DVD player, the 596,

Meridian 800 Reference Series 

Originally a superb DVD player, the Meridian 

800 has developed to become one of the most 

highly-specified optical disc players in the 

world. From its impeccable pedigree came 

the original 808 Signature Reference CD 

player, and now the 808.2 – the highest quality 

Compact Disc player Meridian has ever built.

Meridian: CD Innovator 

Of all manufacturers, Meridian has the 

longest history of high-performance CD 

players. Meridian’s first CD player, MCD, 

was introduced almost a quarter of a 

century ago. MCD sounded radically better 

than anything else available, and still stands 

comparison with many so-called audiophile 

designs of today. 

In the intervening years, Meridian has 

relentlessly pursued the path of making 

better and better CD players, introducing 

more than 25 models – each one better 

than the one before. Every model has 

received critical acclaim, and we have 

gathered more than 50 awards for our CD 

players. 

Over the years we have researched, 

pioneered and ultimately mastered the 

art of refinement of every aspect of CD 

playback. We showed how jitter was a 

major challenge to audio quality – indeed, 

Meridian was the first company to isolate 

jitter, as far back as 1984. 

Our technologies include advanced servo 

implementations, unique power supply 

designs, significant innovations in the digital 

arena and, of course, peerless analogue 

sections. Meridian also pioneered the idea 

that special disc navigation could improve 

the playback quality on difficult discs (such 

as those with fingerprints, scratches or 

manufacturing defects). Our players also 

benefited from digital output capabilities. 

Meridian was also the first company to offer 

a 2-box solution (utilising an outboard DAC), 

and has developed special phase-locked 

loops and FIFO buffers to produce the very 

best result in such systems – including of 

course our preferred system, a CD player 

directly connected to a pair of Meridian 

DSP loudspeakers. 

Meridian has also offered its technologies 

for the mastering of Compact Discs. Some 

of the highest quality recordings have been 

made using our 607 A/D converter, while 

even more have used the 618 Mastering 

Processor to maximise the dynamic range 

on disc. Top recording studios tend to use 

a Meridian player for checking, and over the 

years a Meridian CD player has become 

synonymous with the best sound, and ‘a 

reference’. This is a reputation we cherish, 

and one which we aim to defend by making 

each player better than the one before.

Why the 808? 

Meridian decided to introduce the 808 


for several reasons. We have been both 

surprised and pleased by increasing 

levels of interest in our popular G Series 

CD players: this tells us that there is a 

strong element of listeners who do not 

want pictures or complications attached 

to their music enjoyment, and wish to take 

advantage of the extensive selection that is 

available on no medium, to date, other than 

Compact Disc. 

Thus the 808.2 is offered as an exquisite 

CD-only player, embodying the very best of 

our art and technology. And the 808.2 is a 

‘signature’ model – each one hand-signed 

by Meridian’s founders, Robert Stuart and 

Allen Boothroyd. 

Meridian’s 808.2 is the latest in a series of 

optical disc players that use a speciallyselected 

ROM drive for reading. The 

ROM drive allows multiple passes to be 

made, ensuring that the correct data are 

recovered from the disc and improving 

Compact Disc’s error-correction a 

hundredfold. It also allows complete 

buffering of the recovered data. 

To ensure the lowest possible jitter, 808.2 

incorporates an entirely new clocking 

regime and employs three buffers, two of 

which are used as FIFOs in a completely 

redesigned buffering environment. 

By the time the data is passed to the DACs 

or the digital output, the jitter is incredibly 

low – in fact 808.2 has the lowest jitter 

we have ever measured on a CD player: 

even better than the original 808’s 90 

picoseconds, with the jitter spectrum held 

below 0.1Hz. 

The signal path includes proprietary error 

correction and concealment, and Meridian’s 

acclaimed ‘Resolution Enhancement’ 

DSP, in which the original 44.1kHz, 16-bit 

audio is upsampled to 176.4kHz, 24-bit in 

a new 150MIPs processor operating with

48-bit internal precision. This is ‘true’ DSP 

upsampling, completely redesigned for the 

808.2 and unlike anything else available in 

the marketplace. This upsampling allows 

conversion-related filtering to take place 

far above the limits of human hearing, so 

there are no artefacts added to the sound – 

simply the pure music. 

The 808.2 employs the latest, exquisite 

multi-bit over-sampled delta-sigma D/A 

converters, combined with a matching 

proprietary analogue output stage of the 

highest quality, completely redesigned for 

the 808.2. 

Delivering the promise of CD 

The new model includes many other 

new features, including the RJ45-based 

SpeakerLink interfacing system, allowing 

a direct single-cable link from the 808.2 

to Meridian DSP speakers via convenient, 

easily-installed CAT-5 cabling. But the 

most significant is the new, proprietary 

digital filter system developed by Meridian 

and included for the first time in the new 

808.2. 

High-resolution audio prefers sample rates 

and bit depths higher than the 44.1kHz 16- 

bit CD format. For this reason our top-end 

CD players have incorporated resolution 

enhancement that includes upsampling. 

808.2 perfectly upscales its outputs 

to 176.4kHz and 24 bits, significantly 

improving the sound. 

But upsampling alone cannot improve on 

one aspect of CD: the original sampling 

rate of the recording. Digital audio captures 

sound up to half the sample rate and 

you have to filter out any meaningless 

information above that frequency (22kHz in 

the case of CD). 

Traditionally, the steep filters required to 

do this job have audibly degraded the 

sound. The earliest analogue filters caused 

enormous phase shifts at high frequencies, 

and with digital linear-phase filters a big 

issue was the introduction of pre-echoes.

808.2

Meridian’s goal was to invent a technology 

that stripped away this fundamental 

limitation in the making of the CD, taking the 

listener right back to the original higherresolution 

sound – no mean ambition, 

nor a trivial task. But Meridian’s founder, 

Bob Stuart, was sure that high-definition 

sound could be achieved without excessive 

sample rates – if the filters were right. 

Bob authored an Audio Engineering Society 

paper on high definition audio in 2004 in 

which he recommended the development 

of ‘apodizing’ filters – filters that were 

minimum phase, with no ripple, causing no 

pre-echo: and thus offering perfect timing. 

He predicted they would even be able to fix 

problems in the origination process itself. 

Meridian’s research team designed an 

exquisite new filter based on this research 

– a filter with ‘apodizing-like’ qualities (you 

can’t do a true apodizing filter for 44.1kHz 

sampling) – and its first appearance is 

in the 808.2. It needs significant DSP to 

deliver, using much of the power of the 

player’s 150MIPS main processor. This 

filter system is so effective that it can even 

correct errors made in the recording or 

mastering stage – CDs played back on the 

808.2 can sound even better than they did 

in the studio! 

Bob Harley, editor of The Absolute Sound, 

reported: “CDs played through the 808.2 

and the new DSP7200 active DSP 

loudspeaker sounded like high-resolution
