In the ancient world of Operative Masonry the masons were often
required to move from job to job much as in our modern time. It was
further explained that ancient master masons, just as 1st class masons of
today of today, were more likely to travel great distances than those of
lesser ranks (FC & EA). Due to their experience (and today, usually a
membership in the labor union representing the craft) they could move
freely from job to job. Those doing so were normally members of a
Masonic guild, whose members would, if known, vouch for the
qualifications of (or recommend) another 'traveling' mason.
In speculative masonry we as Master Masons may freely move from
Lodge to Lodge (either visiting or moving membership) and upon proper
avouchment or by testing be found worthy to attend another Master
Mason Lodge. This is much the same as moving from one job to another or
from one ancient Masonic guild to another.
Also, a Master Mason is a traveler from west to east, as east is the
where the sun comes up, hence the source of light. This is why the master
sits in the East. Because it is the source of light. Thus being a traveling man
represents our journey from darkness to Masonic light (enlightment). We
"traveled" symbolically when we were raised to the sublime degree of
Master Mason. Remember the words, "It will be necessary for you to
travel"? and the condition of the road we would have to travel?
In Masonry we are told to seek the light. Light in Masonry is knowledge
and from that knowledge comes information and understanding.
Grand Master’s Message Continued
Brethren, we have much to accomplish, I feel certain we can and will attain all of our goals.
However, no one can do this alone. I’m asking for your help and assistance.
It starts with one man in one Lodge, that leads to two men in two Lodges and it will grow to
the District, Zone and State levels. Let us, all of us, commit to resurrecting our Fraternity to
the heights it has enjoyed in the past.
Let us commit to PERFECTION and shoot for PERFECTION, because if we don’t shoot
for PERFECTION we will settle for less than mediocrity, and that my Brothers is not acceptable
for ANY MASON!!
We need not be the one’s who ask “what happened!”, or those who ask “what’s happening!”
BUT THE ONES WHO SAY “WE’RE GOING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!”
My Brothers “MASONS ALWAYS RISE TO THE OCCASION”!!!
Respectfully and Fraternally,
J. Dick Martinez
News from the East
Brethren,
My profound thanks for your prayers and condolences for my
family through the tragic loss of my sister to cancer last month.
Also, for the generous donation in lieu of flowers. The children
of Osawatomie, Kansas will enjoy more books in the public
library due to your generosity and, again, Thank You!
It was gratifying to hear that all went well at the Lodge in my
absence, and especially that Bro. Bart did so exceedingly well
during his first time presiding in the East. (The best part was
that he seemed to enjoy it!)
The following is unrelated, but I want to throw it
in just for your edification.
Freemasonry and religion.
Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It
requires of its members a belief in God as part of the obligation
of every responsible adult, but advocates no sectarian faith or
practice. Masonic ceremonies include prayers, both traditional
and extempore, to reaffirm each individual's dependence on God
and to seek divine guidance. Freemasonry is open to men of any
faith, but religion may not be discussed at Masonic meetings.
Freemasonry lacks the basic elements of religion:
It has no dogma or theology, no wish or means to enforce
religious orthodoxy.
It offers no sacraments.
It does not claim to lead to salvation by works, by secret
knowledge, or by any other means. The secrets of Freemasonry
are concerned with modes of recognition and methods of
instruction, not with the means of salvation.
Fraternally yours, R:. H:. Ed Lanham, WM, PDI
News from the West
THE LEVEL
by John R. Heisner
In Freemasonry, the level is the symbol of
equality, not only among members of the Craft, but
of all humanity. The fraternity teaches that mankind is the
offspring of God, created in His image of one blood. As such,
each person is born with certain inalienable rights to life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness. Those who wrote this country's
Declaration of Independence and Constitution were not
implementing man-made justice when incorporating such
sentiments into our laws - they were enacting fundamental
principles given us by the Most High.
The level also serves as the emblem in the jewel worn by the
Senior Warden and reminds those in attendance that all have
gathered on the level. That phrase has also acquired significance
in the day-to-day parlance in civil society. When one speaks
about another as being on the level, he generally means that he
believes the person about whom he is speaking to be truthful,
honest and forthright.
Yet, the virtues symbolized by the level are not intended to
be limited to the Masonic lodge room. The concept of equality, or
of treating others with equal respect, is to be put into action by
every Mason outside of the lodge room. At work, when others
jump on the bandwagon to crucify a fellow worker, the Mason
among them may be expected to demand common courtesy,
compassion and empathy. In social circles when the conversation
turns to criticizing a friend who is not present, the Mason among
them may be expected to encourage restraint. When anger,
disharmony, or disrespect of any nature rears its ugly head, it
will not be a surprise to those who know that by word and
example the Mason in the crowd promotes peace, harmony
and goodwill.
A Message From the Grand Master of Florida
Brethren,
“MASONS ALWAYS RISE TO THE OCCASION”
Thank you for the honor and Privilege you have
bestowed upon me by allowing me to serve you
as your Grand Master. I also want to thank you
for your foresight in electing our Grand Lodge
Officers. To the Grand Lodge Officers thank you
for your undying devotion to our Fraternity.
We have recently concluded our 181st Annual
Grand Communication, and are entering into a
time like never before. We are experiencing the
best exposure our Fraternity has ever enjoyed.
We are in the spotlight with all the movies, books
and television documentaries that are very positive.
We are having a great influx of young men who are not only curious about our
great Fraternity but, they also want to attain the knowledge we have to offer mankind.
Are we ready to accept this great and wonderful challenge? Have we examined our
infrastructure to see if we are ready? Do we have the right Catechism Instructors,
Mentors and Masonic Education Committees in place in our Lodges? Are we ready to
SEIZE THE MOMENT?
My Brothers “MASONS ALWAYS RISE TO THE OCCASION”!!!
The Grand Master’s Charity for this year will be The Masonic Medical Research
Laboratory, otherwise known as the MMRL. To name a few of the MMRL’s achievements,
it has “discovered or unraveled the mechanisms of the majority of known cardiac
arrhythmias” and its “research has played an important role in the implementation
of devices like the pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator” and the automatic
external defibrillator. Furthermore, “MMRL continues to play a major, and in
some cases a pivotal role, in the development of heart medications.” “MMRL scientists
were instrumental in providing the first direct evidence linking Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome to abnormal heart rhythms.” They have recently begun an exciting
new aspect of stem cell research by growing heart tissue from human DNA cells in a
Petri dish, so that healthy heart tissue may be implanted back into the patient. The
MMRL is on the cutting edge of scientific research, and it is wholly involved with
cardiac research. Heart disease is still the Number 1 killer in America. Brethren the
MMRL, has been our Flagship Charity since 1997. Let’s get behind this charity and
make it our Landmark, and as identifiable as the Shriner’s Hospitals.
