The Year in Review
JULY
THE CATALOG, the Library’s new online catalog, goes live! The Catalog includes a range of
exciting features, such as—for the first time—the ability to search all collections through one
catalog.
THE EDNA BARNES SALOMON ROOM in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is transformed
into a new wireless Internet reading room. For the first time in the Fifth Avenue Library, users will
also have access to laptops available for loan from the Library.
HARLEM LIBRARY celebrates its centennial! On July 24, the Harlem Library in Manhattan
marked its 100th year with a special performance by Rhythm and Sound, community guest
speakers, and more.
AUGUST
Children and teens celebrate the 2009 SUMMER READING program with certificates and
surprises, open houses, and special programs at neighborhood libraries. This year, 75,000
participated, and collectively read 380,120 books. On August 30, top readers were honored on the
field at Yankee Stadium, before the Yankees beat the White Sox!
SEPTEMBER
MAPPING NEW YORK’S SHORELINE, 1609–2009 opens in the Gottesman Exhibition Hall at
the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Inspired by the Library’s collection of Dutch, English, and
early American mapping of the Atlantic Coastal regions, the exhibition exemplifies the best early
and growing knowledge of the unknown shores along our neighboring waters.
The 2009–2010 Fellows in the SCHOMBURG CENTER’S SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE
PROGRAM arrive. Six scholars, whose research on the black experience would benefit from
extended access to the Center’s resources, spend six months to one year researching collections at
the Center.
LIVE FROM THE NYPL presents Ryan Adams in conversation with Mary-Louise Parker. The rock
singer and songwriter discusses poetry, fiction, and his most recent book, Hello Sunshine, with the
Tony Award–winning actress.
