Dear People :
Good old Pop will have his day next Sunday•
Father's Day has been built up to quite a high point
in the past few years. It is now traditional to give the
head of the family some sort of a gift to show appreciation
for his efforts throughout the year. He's the
guy who works hard all day and, on pay day, hands
over the envelope to the real head of the family. He's
the guy who comes home all tired out to find a program
of mowing the lawn, fixing the vacuum cleaner,
moving furniture or beating the rugs all laid out for
him. He's the guy who sinks into his easy chair,
lights up his pipe, picks up the paper and heaves a
big sigh of contentment.., and then has to get un to
take the family to a show or a drive or go visiting•
He's the guy who has a day off and immediately
bumps into a slight job of ing the garage or
easing the housing shortage for Rover by erecting
a dog house and mentally reserving space for highself.
He may get a carton of cigarettes from Junior
(who knows Pop smokes cigars and coincidentally
the cigs happen to be Junior's favorite brand), possible
a box of candy from little sister (also her favorite
kind), a new gadget for the car from Mom (who
uses it more than he does), and so on down the line.
Maybe the family will take him out for dinner and a
show, making sure he brings his wallet with hmm.
And, of course, when the bills come in the first of
the month, Pop will find those gift items ready to be
paid for.
Seriously, don't let Father's Day go by without
some remembrance for him. He'll appreciate your
thoughtfulness a lot. And, if you're looking for suggestions,
stop in here, He will like an easy chair
to call his own, or a smoking stand, or maybe a
hassock to rest his weary feet.
"- - 5 a- iva--- -- ---- -r b of the playground
fund optms next Tuesday and runs for Live
days, winding up on Saturday. There will be rides.
awards, booths, and so an th five d.a y fro m
which to choose you're sure to find one free night
when you can attend. And you'll not only get a lot of
fun out of it but will be helping a project which will
improve the. town. Our school playgrounds need
equipment and the proceeds from the carnival will
go towards buying the slides, swings, etc., to make
the kids healthier and happier.
Well, a ter a lapse of five years, the anntlal
Policemen's Ball will again become annual. Plans are
underway now to revive th affair which, w.as last
held in 1942 and then cancelled because of the war,
According to present reports the ball will be bigger
and better than ever. Reservations are usually at a
premium so better get yours in as early as possible.
As usual, the affair will be held at Lake Compounce,
Sonthin enLis he only means &e otice .
have of raising money for their pension fund.
Details of the program are being._
in advance and the event should be a humdinger.
Don't start getting your clothes pressed for it now
• . . it won't be held until late next fall,
graduated next Monday evening. The speakers at the
program are far better qualified than I am to give
advice to these young ladies and young men just
starting out in the world. So I'll just say, best of
luck.
There seems to be considerable comment on the
new state sales ta . Few people seem to know just
what it is all about. And a lot Of merchants are in
the dark as to how to apply it. Manufacturing concerns
have just woke up to the fact that the "use"
part of it affects them in their purchase of supplies.
Well, we'll know how it is going to affect us a
couple of months after July 1. It may wake people up
to the fact that when we urge large state expendi-
• tures in one way or another we have got to pay for
them. We'll be reminded of that fact every day in
the week.
That remark, "At last we have found the indispensable
man, the taxpayerl" seems pre.tty appropriate
here.
Sincerely,
