EVERY WISH.
Yo - ca n start
a business.on this
Sum you € n get a good business going practically
"on a shoestring." But you can bet that in the next
tew decades it will be quite a bit easier when you
slart with a substantial bundle o| money.
The old (and pretty accurate) saying that
"money makes money" will be truer than ever•
So i[ you're looking [o ,ard to the great day
when your nam.e will be up there on a store bent
or out on a shingle, no_._ w is the time to think about
having the cash you w nt.
There's certainly no surer way to amass '
going-into-business [und than the U. $. Savings
Bond way.
Month aher month, automatically, your savings
und grows. And best of all, you'll be paid of[ with
$4 or every $3 you invest.
There are two convenient plans {or you to use.
Either arrange where you work to have more of
you income tabbed |or U.S. Savings Bonds, or
ask your bank to enroll you in the equally popu-
hikes "of 10 boys each in areas
close to the camp area and twice
each period the e_ ce group
went on exploration tl kes aruumi
the entire property.
N'aturn lore was a perfectly natural
result of the camp program.
Boys caught many frogs and crayfish
and turtles and butterflies and
identified trees and "flew'tea and
shrubs. During the last period the
Sioux tribe, the seven year olds,
under the leadership of Dewey
Jackson, brought back to uur live
box a five-foot black snake• At
this point I would like to digress a
minute and talk about snakes. It
seems that copperheads have been
seen in the East Street area. They
do come down from the mountains
during long dry periods to get the
water from the lake• Many of our
hoyg and seVe?al of our leaders
a e of the parents were'
emotionMly npset by the thought
of encountering a snake. A week
before camp opened my son, aged
two and one half, had seen a black
snake about three feet long escaping
dawn a knot hole in the
barn and he had rnn to it and tried
to catch hold of it. The counsellors
who were at the camp at the
time for ka training session were
quite amazed at his apparent lack
of concern. I didn't bother to explain
to the counsellors that this
was due to the fact that hc had
probably never seen a snake before
but used the cxperieeee to got our
staff leaders to share with the
boys as they came to camp. the
knowledge that the great majority
of snakes on the property were of
the harmless variety. I think you
will find by t lking to any of the
leaders that were at camp this
summer that we did accomplish a
great deal in the field of nature
study through a very infurmal natm•e
study program.
Although there are probably
thousands of common cat fish or
bull heads in the waters of Confound
there are many
boys who have never seen any
you woukl have been interested to
have watched the boys at camp
one morning as we passed a live
bullhead around the entire group
and let each boy learn that tha
pectoral fins on the fish were
where the spines were and not in
the ugly looking whiskers in front.
We had anticipated that softball
. would be a maJor activity and provided
equipment and diamonds
for four camp teams• We did h'ave
some very "good games with close
scores and lots of enthusiasm but
most of the boys had had some
baseball in corner lots around town
"rite foul" classes at tlte biglt school will bare
a league .w,hich will allow youn tm not quite up
to varsity calibre to play organized basketball It is
hoped that a number of. kids wlto othm vise would
ha ;e no chance to play will get in the game. It is
also hoped that tile league will develop some talent
for the varsity sciuad.
Tiffs.will be tfm first opportunit for tile grammar
school kids to play basketball under school
supervision. In past years there were no facilities
for this competition. Here again the l ids will get
aoth a lot of fun out of supervised play and will
lave some knowledge of basketball before they get
'nto ldgb school.
I also bear that th members of the faculty
are going to get into tlfe act. They're going to get
together for some infmanal workouts. Probably
,vouldn't do any harm for many of us to get a little
, xercise of this sort.
Repm s are around that Soutbington High
School is having a little difficulty in filling its 1951
schedule. Altbough the local high school only has
240 boys, tile calibre of the football teams has been
so high that the schools of similar size feel that
tile Blue Knights are too good for them and tile
bigger cities are afraid to risk their prestige by
taking a chance of getting licked by such a small
school.
Ask the lfeople who own tele¢ision sets how
they ike them. Then come in and get the family
set for Christmas. It's something
everyone of every age can get a lot of pleas-
Don't forget to get those gifts in the mail if
you expect the boys in service to get tltiem in time
for Chrtstmas. And be sine they re properl: wr,tppad
and addresged..
Parking seerrk to be el:upping up in the concersation
more and more. Apparently l)eople don't
n , t iake advantage of 12moar in pace in
back of the Legion Hall. One suggestion to make it
more attractive is to make an entrance to the lot
off Center Street.
