Meeting the demand for obesity surgery
Patients suffering from morbid obesity

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding is now
considered one of the most effective
permanent solutions for weight loss. It
is a minimally invasive procedure, with
patients returning to normal activity
within 7 to 10 days.
The Lap Band is a restrictive band
which gives the person a feeling of
fullness when eating a small amount of
food. This is achieved by the creation of
a small upper stomach pouch with the
band. The great advantage the lap band
gives to the patient is its adjustability to
suit their individual needs. The diameter
of the band can be made smaller or larger
by an injection into a reservoir.
Many patients find great
improvements to their general health
with improvements commonly seen
in illnesses such as diabetes, sleep
disturbances, hypertension and joint
problems.
Generally patients between 18-60
years of age who are at least 45 kilos
more than their ideal weight or have a
body mass index greater than 35 are
suitable for Lap Band Surgery.

Greenslopes Obesity Surgi-Centre located
in the Greenslopes Private Hospital
Specialist Centre. The Centre offers

team of health professionals including
the Clinical Nurse Manager, dieticians
and clinical psychologists.

Jessie Vasey
Wing gets a
facelift.
The redevelopment of Jessie
Vasey Wing (old Multi-Storey
Wing) continues with
construction on Levels 1 & 2
underway. This stage of the
project will see the
refurbishment and creation of 14
new single rooms. 10 new single
rooms were completed on Level
4 earlier this year.
New private rehab rooms
Greenslopes Private Hospital has
opened five new private rooms in its
Rehabilitation Unit. This addition means
now a total of 45 beds are available to
both private and DVA patients.
The modern design and finishes of the
new private rooms are consistent with
that of the John French Wing. Each has a
private ensuite and equipped with a LCD
flat screen television.
This expansion means the hospital
now has the capacity to accommodate
eligible privately insured patients from
within Greenslopes Private Hospital,
other hospitals and directly from the
community.
Eligible patients are those with
impairment or disability for which there
is a reasonable expectation of functional
gain. The primary treatment goal will be
an improvement in functional status.
The Rehabilitation Unit offers a range
of comprehensive inpatient and day
therapy rehabilitation programs:

- Orthopaedic
- Reconditioning
- Amputee
All rehabilitation programs are
approved by Private Health Funds and
The Department of Veterans’Affairs.
The programs tailored to the
individual’s needs are provided by a
skilled and experienced multidisciplinary
team which is coordinated by the
Rehabilitation Consultant.
Referrals must be made through a
Rehabilitation Consultant who assesses
the individual’s capacity to benefit from
rehabilitation.
