Investment in stereotactic
neurosurgery
Greenslopes Private Hospital has purchased
the latest version of the Medtronic Stealth
Stereotactic Navigation System. This
computer based system merges the pre
surgery images from CT and MRI with the
actual patient during surgery.
Image-guided surgery (IGS) has
revolutionised traditional surgical
techniques by allowing surgeons to
navigate through the body using computergenerated
three dimensional images.
The system is vital in neurosurgery
when the operative field is deep in the
skull or brain.
Neurosurgeon, Dr Bruce Hall said the
IGS system helps the surgeon know at
every moment during surgery where he
or she is working in the patient’s body
accurately.
Because the system allows the
surgeon to navigate through the delicate
environment of the brain, it also means
more accurate surgery. The surgeon can
remove the brain tumor or repair an
aneurysm with far less impact on
healthy tissue.
“This precise technology also enables
the surgeon to go directly to the problem,
which generally means the patient
spends less time on the operating table
and has a quicker recovery with fewer
complications,” Dr Hall said.
Progress is monitored in real time
using the 3D images from the CT and
MRI to show exactly where the surgical
instruments are in relation to the critical
anatomical structures of the brain such
as carotoid arteries, cranial nerves and
spinal cord. What’s more, those images
can be manipulated and merged to
provide views never before seen in the
operating room during surgery.
The system takes any guesswork away
from this delicate surgery.
Dr Bruce Hall is establishing
Queensland Neurosurgery and Spine
Surgery (QNS) with Dr Ross Gurgo at
Greenslopes Private Hospital from 18 July.
New harmonic scalpel
- safer surgery to reduce hospital stay
A new more powerful ultrasonic
harmonic scalpel for laparoscopic surgery
was used for the first time in Australia at
Greenslopes Private Hospital.
Specialist Surgeon, Dr Ian Martin used
the scalpel in a laparoscopic procedure to
prevent reflux of acid from the stomach
back into the oesophagus. Until now these
keyhole surgery procedures have relied on
simple scissors and diathermy for cutting
the tissues and stopping bleeding.
This newer harmonic scalpel uses high
frequency sound waves to rapidly cut and
stop bleeding at the same time. There is
therefore less danger of burns from the
electrical diathermy during the surgery
nor bleeding as the surgeon dissects
through the anatomical structures.
This improved technology will lead
to quicker and safer surgery as there will
be little blood to mask the important
anatomical structures.
The safety of this new device over
diathermy will allow the surgeon to
dissect other major structures away
from the operative field. This will lead
to less damage during the operations
and less likelihood of the operations
being changed to major open procedures
because of bleeding. It will also lead
to higher success rates for the surgery
because of the better vision during the
operation.
“The general introduction of this
technology means patients will be home
faster with less pain and higher success
rates from their operations,” Dr Martin
said.
New plastic & cosmetic
service at Greenslopes Private
A new cosmetic and plastic service has opened at Greenslopes
Private Hospital. Greenslopes Plastic Surgery (GPS) offers a
comprehensive range of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic
surgery along with non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
Qualified Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons
include Doctors Neil Allen, Hugh Bartholomeusz, David
Campbell and Richard Lewandowski.
The range of services include facial rejuvenation, breast
surgery, body contouring, skin cancer care and maxillofacial
surgery.
Head of Plastic Surgery at Greenslopes Private Hospital,
Dr Hugh Bartholomeusz said the range of services offered by
Greenslopes Plastic Surgery would complement current plastic
surgery services offered by the hospital.
“The availability of the full range of services will benefit the
local community and GPH staff. For example, easier access to
skin cancer care and mole scan services onsite at GPH may result
in earlier detection and prevention of melanoma and other skin
cancers,” Dr Bartholomeusz said.
All excisional surgery will be performed by one of our
Specialist Plastic Surgeons.
Greenslopes Plastic Surgery is equipped with the latest
technology in skin cancer surveillance. By digitally recording
images of skin spots an accurate assessment of progress of each
spot can be conducted at regular scanning intervals.
Facial rejuvenation procedures will include laser therapy,
intense pulse light devices and treatment of fine lines and
wrinkles with filling agents and muscle relaxant injections.
Cutting edge technology at GPH
Gastroenterologist, Dr Luke Hourigan has
introduced a very useful and innovative
treatment for pre cancerous mucosal
lesions of the lower oesophagus and
stomach at Greenslopes Private Hospital,
a first in Australia.
This procedure known as Endoscopic
Submucosal Dissection (ESD) uses a
special new device called an “IT knife”
or “insulated tip electrosurgical knife”
which has only recently become available
in Australia.
With the new insulated tip electro
surgical knife the premalignant area can
be removed endoscopically. This provides
a less invasive endoscopic option for the
management of precancerous lesions that
are confined to the lining of the upper
gastrointestinal tract.
Dr Hourigan said he used the
procedure to resect a premalignant
gastric mucosal lesion.
“Resection of these lesions in one
piece allows for better histopathologic
assessment and subsequent assessment of
curability,” he said.
“The ceramic insulated tip on the
electrosurgical knife allows the mucosal
lesion to be neatly cut out and dissected
from the muscular wall of the oesophagus
and stomach.
“Previously such lesions would have
required surgical resection. This device
provides an endoscopic option for suitable
lesions without the need for a major
operation, all done by accessing the
upper gastrointestinal tract through the
mouth,” he said.
Dr Hourigan was invited to Japan in
November last year to learn how to use
this new device from Dr Takuji Gotoda at
the “National Cancer Center” in Tokyo.
Dr Gotoda is considered one of the World
experts in the use of the IT knife.
The introduction of this procedure
keeps GPH at the forefront of
gastroenterology innovation in
Queensland.
Meeting the demand for obesity surgery
Patients suffering from morbid obesity
have access to the latest surgical solutions
for major weight loss at Greenslopes
Private Hospital.
Laparoscopic Gastric Banding is now
considered one of the most effective
permanent solutions for weight loss. It
is a minimally invasive procedure, with
patients returning to normal activity
within 7 to 10 days.
The Lap Band is a restrictive band
which gives the person a feeling of
fullness when eating a small amount of
food. This is achieved by the creation of
a small upper stomach pouch with the
band. The great advantage the lap band
gives to the patient is its adjustability to
suit their individual needs. The diameter
of the band can be made smaller or larger
by an injection into a reservoir.
Many patients find great
improvements to their general health
with improvements commonly seen
in illnesses such as diabetes, sleep
disturbances, hypertension and joint
problems.
Generally patients between 18-60
years of age who are at least 45 kilos
more than their ideal weight or have a
body mass index greater than 35 are
suitable for Lap Band Surgery.
Dr Copp is one of the Specialist
Surgeons performing the proven
Laparoscopic Gastric Banding procedure
at Greenslopes Private Hospital. He has
successfully performed more than 200
Laparoscopic Gastric Banding procedures
over the last four years with an average
weight loss at two years of 60% of excess
weight.
“I have been performing the procedure
at Greenslopes Private Hospital for the
past twelve months with great success,”
Dr Copp said.
Dr Copp has recently established the
Greenslopes Obesity Surgi-Centre located
in the Greenslopes Private Hospital
Specialist Centre. The Centre offers
patients access to a multi-disciplinary
team of health professionals including
the Clinical Nurse Manager, dieticians
and clinical psychologists.
A number of General Practitioner and
Patient information nights are planned
throughout the year.
GP referrals can be made to the following
specialist surgeons:
Dr John Copp: 3282 9319
Dr Ian Martin: 3720 9057
Jessie Vasey
Wing gets a
facelift.
The redevelopment of Jessie
Vasey Wing (old Multi-Storey
Wing) continues with
construction on Levels 1 & 2
underway. This stage of the
project will see the
refurbishment and creation of 14
new single rooms. 10 new single
rooms were completed on Level
4 earlier this year.
New private rehab rooms
Greenslopes Private Hospital has
opened five new private rooms in its
Rehabilitation Unit. This addition means
now a total of 45 beds are available to
both private and DVA patients.
The modern design and finishes of the
new private rooms are consistent with
that of the John French Wing. Each has a
private ensuite and equipped with a LCD
flat screen television.
This expansion means the hospital
now has the capacity to accommodate
eligible privately insured patients from
within Greenslopes Private Hospital,
other hospitals and directly from the
community.
Eligible patients are those with
impairment or disability for which there
is a reasonable expectation of functional
gain. The primary treatment goal will be
an improvement in functional status.
The Rehabilitation Unit offers a range
of comprehensive inpatient and day
therapy rehabilitation programs:
- Neurological
- Orthopaedic
- Reconditioning
- Amputee
All rehabilitation programs are
approved by Private Health Funds and
The Department of Veterans’Affairs.
The programs tailored to the
individual’s needs are provided by a
skilled and experienced multidisciplinary
team which is coordinated by the
Rehabilitation Consultant.
Referrals must be made through a
Rehabilitation Consultant who assesses
the individual’s capacity to benefit from
rehabilitation.
Above: Urologist, Dr
Greg Malone with Visiting
Surgeon from USA, Dr
Eugene Rhee at GPH
to perform the InVance
procedure.
Men no longer have to
suffer in silence
Dr Eugene Rhee, a leading US surgeon,
visited Greenslopes Private Hospital in
May to perform a breakthrough surgical
procedure which will enable urologists
worldwide to cure an estimated 90 per
cent of male stress urinary incontinence
following prostate cancer surgery.
Dr. Eugene Rhee, who is the Associate
Chief of Urology at the Southern
California Permanente Medical Group,
shared the latest techniques and
procedures with local Urologist, Dr Greg
Malone.
The InVance male sling system is
the first and remains the only one of its
kind to be brought to Australia. Dr Rhee
says that the high success rate amongst
InVance patients is unprecedented in his
10 years in the field of urology.
“Stress urinary incontinence was a
problem for approximately 10-20 per
cent of men who have undergone radical
surgery to treat prostate cancer. For the
majority of urinary incontinence sufferers
who fall in the mild to moderate bracket,
there is a simple, once-only procedure
that cures around 90 per cent of patients.
“No other surgical procedure in my
ten years of experience has achieved
this level of patient satisfaction It is a
minimally invasive surgical approach
with immediate results for mild to
moderate stress urinary incontinence in
men,” said Dr Rhee.
Every year, around 12,000 Australian
men are diagnosed with prostate
cancer, and more than 2,600 die of the
disease, according to the Prostate Cancer
Foundation of Australia.
Better and earlier diagnosis has
lead to increased survival rates, but
surgical treatment, known as radical
prostatectomy, can leave one in ten
men with stress urinary incontinence, a
debilitating and potentially depressing
side effect.
The sling device works by creating
gentle pressure on the urethra, which
reduces the possibility of urine leakage
and provides patients with urinary
control. Most patients are continent
immediately following the procedure
and can resume normal, non-strenuous
activities within a few days.
Dr Rhee, who has performed over
75 InVance procedures since 2000,
said that men’s quality of life could be
restored once the mentally and physically
debilitating effects of incontinence are
treated.
“Men suffering from urinary
incontinence can find their quality of life
greatly restricted. At a time when patients
should be confidently overcoming
“No other surgical procedure in my ten years
of experience has achieved this level of patient
satisfaction It is a minimally invasive surgical approach
with immediate results for mild to moderate stress
urinary incontinence in men,”
Prostate Cancer, many find their
everyday life is impinged, as they deal
with the discomfort, embarrassment and
inconvenience of urinary incontinence.
“After the procedure, patients are
thrilled to go back to life as normal.
It brings control back to their life, and
brings back the freedom they once had to
continue their sport, hobbies, work and
social life unfettered, which is so vital to
their quality of life,” said Dr Rhee.
A gala night for medical research
Event Sponsors
It was a Gala Night for Greenslopes
Private Hospital on Friday 6 May
when Her Excellency the Governor
of Queensland, Quentin Bryce AC,
officially launched the Gallipoli Research
Foundation (GRF) at the Stamford Plaza
Hotel.
This historic event also served as
an opportunity for the Foundation
Chair, Mr Alan Kinkade to acknowledge
$1.75million in donations received
since the Foundation commenced its
fundraising activities in January 2005.
“There is a great sense of pride among
all associated with the Foundation and
we are humbled by the generosity and
encouragement we have received from the
corporate and general community,” said
Mr Kinkade.
“We are embarking on a new era
of research here at the Hospital; a new
venture that will bring a great sense of
achievement as we assist our researchers
to improve the health of our community.”
The evening commenced with a
spectacular presentation of the Sunset
Ceremony performed by the Queensland
Detachment of the Royal Australian
Navy Band. The Sunset Ceremony is
an established tradition signifying the
closing of the day and preparation for
the coming day. Program Manager of
4BC and Gallipoli Research Foundation
Board member, Greg Cary acted as
Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
In his opening comments about the
ceremony he said, “The Beat to Quarters
honours the courage and sacrifice of the
men and women of the Royal Australian
Navy through eight decades of war and
peace in the service of our country. The
ceremony provided a very fitting start
to our celebrations here tonight, as the
Foundation aims to honour the sacrifice
of the veteran community by striving to
achieve its vision to become a centre of
excellence in medical research.”
The Governor was involved in a
number of official duties including
presentation of a uniquely crafted
bronze of Simpson and his donkey
“Duffy”, crafted by artist and sculptor,
Dr Maryann Nicholls to Platinum
Supporters. Simpson’s relatives, Ted
Balmides and Pat Coombers who were
guests on the night and were invited to
8
participate in the official unveiling of the
sculpture with the Governor.
We were delighted to be joined by
Professor Peter Brooks, Executive Dean,
University of Queensland who gave a
short addresses on the Importance of
Research. The University of Queensland
School of Medical and Faculty of Health
is a key supporter of the Foundation.
Ramsay acquires
Affinity
In April, Ramsay Health Care announced its acquisition of
Affinity Healthcare Limited. Affinity currently operates 48
hospitals across Australia and 3 hospitals in Indonesia.
Simultaneously, Ramsay has entered into an agreement to
divest 14 hospitals back to certain current owners of Affinity,
mainly to satisfy the requirements of the competition regulator,
the ACCC.
Managing Director, Pat Grier said this acquisition is one of the
most significant developments in Ramsay’s 40 year history, and
we believe it presents enormous opportunities for Ramsay Health
Care going forward.
“Ramsay has always taken a leadership role in the private
hospital industry in Australia and that leadership role can be
enhanced by this acquisition. It makes Ramsay the premium
private hospital operator in the country,” Pat said.
He said this acquisition was only possible because of the
position of strength built by staff.
“This strength is based on a strong record of consistent success
due to the great work and commitment of our staff, doctors and
management,” he said.
“We hope that through this expansion the professional and
career opportunities for all our staff will be enhanced”.
Ramsay has given an undertaking to the ACCC to hold the
Affinity hospitals separate to ours until they complete their
market surveys.
Greenslopes celebrates 90th anniversary
of Gallipoli at dawn service
More than 2000 people, including local residents, patients,
staff, veterans, and war widows, attended the Anzac Day
Dawn Ceremony of Remembrance, which this year marked the
90th anniversary since the landing of Gallipoli and the 60th
anniversary since the end of World War II.
The moving candlelight service was marked by the traditional
gunfire breakfast prepared and served to those who came to
remember.
Despite ill health, more than 50 patients attended the service
with assistance from the Hospital’s management and staff, and
for those inpatients unable to take part in the Service, it was
filmed and played ‘live’ to patients’ bedsides.
State RSL President, Bill Mason, presented the special address
while a Conservatorium of Music ensemble lead the assembly in
chorus.
Dignitaries to the Service included:
• Kevin Rudd MP, Federal Member for Griffith
• Gary Fenlon, MLA, State Member for Greenslopes
• Councillor Catherine Bermingham, East Brisbane Ward,
Brisbane City Council
• and other ex-service organisation representatives
The Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony of Remembrance is part of
the Hospital’s long and proud tradition of caring for war veterans.
Built in 1942 to care for sick and wounded soldiers, Greenslopes
was the largest Army Hospital in Queensland by the end of World
War II.
A special thanks must go to the Anglican Church Grammar
School Tri-Service Cataflaque Party and all staff who volunteered
their time and efforts to make this event a success!
