Scrambler
Objective 1: Calculate the maximum and minimum distances from Axis A to the center of each chair in the
diagram below of the Scrambler.
SUGGESTED PROCEDURE: Obtain the lengths for r and R, respectively, by pacing the distances when getting on
and off the ride.
DATA: R: __________ m
r: __________ m
Maximum distance from Axis A for each chair: __________ m
Minimum distance from Axis A for each chair: __________ m

Objective 2: To time the circular motion in a rotating frame of reference.
SUGGESTED PROCEDURE: Times tA and tB may be measured while waiting to get on the ride. When on the ride
pick a landmark in the non-moving "ground" frame of reference. Time your return to that same exact position
for the time of a complete cycle.
APPARATUS: Stopwatch
DATA: A) Time for full rotation about B, tB:
__________ s
B) Time for full rotation about A, tA: __________ s
C) Time for a complete cycle (time to go from one position or view to the same exact position
or view.):
__________ s
Is there a simple (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) relationship between A, B, C? Discuss.
Objective 3: Draw the path a person travels in moving through one complete revolution.
SUGGESTED PROCEDURE: Complete diagram after observing the motion of the Scrambler
RESULTS:

Objective 4 (E6, E7, E8, E24): To measure the maximum and minimum accelerations and forces acting on you
during one revolution and state where they occur.
SUGGESTED PROCEDURE: Measure accelerations during the ride. Knowing your mass, calculate the maximum
and minimum centripetal forces experienced. Experiment with different orientations of the horizontal
accelerometer.
APPARATUS: horizontal accelerometer
DATA: Your mass: _________ kg
Maximum acceleration: _________m/s 2 ; force: ________ N at what position? ____________
Minimum acceleration: _________m/s 2 ; force: ________ N at what position? ____________
