Introductory Note to
Faithful Citizenship
The following is the Introductory Note to the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ statement
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.
The entire Faithful Citizenship statement and
numerous support materials may be found at
www.faithfulcitizenship.org.
The Catholic Bishops of the United States
are pleased to re-propose to our people Forming
Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, our teaching
document on the political responsibility of
Catholics. This statement, overwhelmingly adopted
by the body of bishops in 2007, represents the
continuing teaching of our Bishops’ Conference
and our guidance for Catholics in the exercise
of their rights and duties as participants in our
democracy. We urge our Catholic pastors and
people to continue to use this important statement
to help them form their consciences, to contribute
to civil and respectful public dialogue, and to
shape their choices in the coming election in
the light of Catholic teaching.
The statement lis up our dual heritage as
both faithful Catholics and American citizens.
We are members of a community of faith with a
long tradition of teaching and action on human
life, and dignity, marriage and family, justice
and peace, care for creation, and the common
good. As Americans, we are also blessed with
religious liberty which safeguards our right to
bring our principles and moral convictions into
the public arena. These Constitutional freedoms
need to be both exercised and protected, as
some seek to mute the voices or limit the freedoms
of religious believers and religious institutions.
Catholics have the same rights and duties as
others to participate fully in public life. The
Church through its institutions must be free to
carry out its mission and contribute to the common
good without being pressured to sacrifice
fundamental teachings and moral principles.
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
is widely used to share Catholic teaching on the
role of faith and conscience in political life.
Although it has at times been misused to
present an incomplete or distorted view of the
demands of faith in politics, this statement
remains a faithful and challenging call to
discipleship in the world of politics. It does not
oer a voters guide, scorecard of issues, or
direction on how to vote. It applies Catholic
moral principles to a range of important issues
November 04, 2012
and warns against misguided appeals to
“conscience” to ignore fundamental moral
claims, to reduce Catholic moral concerns to
one or two matters, or to justify choices simply
to advance partisan, ideological, or personal
interests. It does not oer a quantitative listing
of issues for equal consideration, but outlines
and makes important distinctions among moral
issues acknowledging that some involve the
clear obligation to oppose intrinsic evils which
can never be justified and that others require
action to pursue justice and promote the common
good. In short, it calls Catholics to form their
consciences in the light of their Catholic faith
and to bring our moral principles to the debate
and decisions about candidates and issues.
The moral and human challenges outlined
in the second half of Forming Consciences for
Faithful Citizenship remain pressing national
issues. In particular, our Conference is focused
on several current and fundamental problems,
some involving opposition to intrinsic evils and
others raising serious moral questions:
 Continuing destruction of unborn children
through abortion and other threats to the
lives and dignity of others who are
vulnerable, sick, or unwanted;
 Renewed eorts to force Catholic
ministries – in health care, education, and
social services - to violate their
consciences or stop serving those in need;
 Intensifying eorts to redefine marriage
and enact measures which undermine
marriage as the permanent, faithful, and
fruitful union of one man and one
woman and a fundamental moral and
social institution essential to the
common good;
An economic crisis which has devastated
lives and livelihoods, increasing national
esperanza fiable.
Go and Make Disciples . . .
Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Farmington

Today it seems like everyone is into labels. I don’t mean shoes
and jeans, no, I’m thinking of personal labels. You know, the quick
judgments we make about others without really putting them into
words, just cutting thoughts and quick dismissals. Perhaps it’s the
overcharged political climate, and truly, that has a bearing on our
personal and communal labeling, but I think it goes a lot deeper.
While we bemoan negative politicking, we fail to hear ourselves
cutting down our neighbor’s kids or slicing up our in-laws. The
radical cry to clean up our public discourse applies first to us in our
relationship to our neighbor – and Jesus made it crystal clear that
our neighbor is everyone we encounter – at home, at work, at
Busch’s, at the gym, on the parking lot, and in church. That’s right!
In church.
When Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbor,” he meant it.
Love her when she dresses like you and when she doesn’t. Love
him when he drives a BMW and when he parks his car right in front
of your house, plastic taped windows and all. Love her when she
forgets an important detail that radically affects your project and love
him in all his ineptness. Love them because God does. Where
I grew up, racism and social profiling were never an issue because
we were all very comfortable white skinned people. Then one day
the walls around the garden came tumbling down and the reality of
diversity walked in. Now the gospel is so much more than a self
congratulating pat on the back message of, “Well, of course I love
my neighbor. She’s just like me.”
When the walls come down and our neighbor turns out to be
someone other than a reflection of ourselves, we are confronted with
the great question: “Now, what do I do? Let them in wearing
different clothes? Speaking a different dialect? Behaving like Mrs.
Turpin in a Flannery O’Connor novel? To love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart, and with all your mind, and all your strength, and
your neighbor as yourself is a tough job. But it’s the only chance you
have of gaining a place in the kingdom – of enjoying peace – true
peace. Some day every one of us will be confronted with this reality
because, one day every wall that divides people will come tumbling
down. And everyone of us has to decide whether we will love
someone whom we have labeled as less than us because of the way
they choose to live. And if there’s one thing that is absolutely true
about life and about the God that we profess as Christians – God is
present in every other person - really, truly present. That’s not
meant to scare us into better behavior. That’s meant to remind us of
the generosity of our God who sees only the soul and chooses to
reside there: your soul and your neighbor’s.
So, what do we do when the truth rises up to confront us? Well,
it’s fairly easy to deny it all and just go on being who we think we are:
good enough. Good enough may work for tonight’s dessert, but it
doesn’t work for that nagging commandment we heard in
today’s gospel. Confronted with the question, “Which is the first of all
the commandments?” Jesus replied: You shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with
all your strength…and your neighbor as yourself.
NOTES . . . FROM THE PASTOR
Page 5
“Now I am going to tell you a mystery…all of us are to be
changed in an instant, in the twinkling of the eye, at the sound of the
last trumpet. The trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed. This corruptible body must
be clothed with incorruptibility, this mortal body with immortality.
When the corruptible frame takes on incorruptibility and the mortal
immortality, then will the saying of Scripture be fulfilled: Death is
swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death,
where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:51-55).
Our faith calls us to assemble as community for various reasons,
at various times. We usually gather at a cemetery for the burial of
family or friends and later visit the burial site. The gathering is often
a stressful time filled with grief and much pain. Usually the beloved
has recently died and the funeral liturgy just celebrated. It is a time
when faith is put to the test, when we are confronted with all the
implications of death. It is also the time when the pilgrim Church, the
faithful on earth, especially in the funeral liturgy, unites closely in
support of one another in their loss and gives witness to their
profession of faith in the mysteries of our redemption, resurrection
and the communion of saints.
Our gatherings at the cemetery after burial are frequently less
stressful, more peaceful, reflective, and prayerful times. As we
gather at the burial site, we are able to see around us the beautiful
setting for so many other faithful departed. We are in the presence
of the faithful who have gone before us.
We are reminded again of the great communion to which we
belong and because of Jesus Christ the bonds that hold us together
are stronger than death, “So it is that the union of the wayfarers with
the brethren who sleep in the peace of Christ is in no way interrupted
but on the contrary, according to the constant faith of the Church this
union is reinforced by an exchange of spiritual goods.” (Catechism of
the Catholic Church #995).
Everything in the cemetery should contribute to an experience
of the call to put our lives in order and seek a closer union with Jesus
Christ. For some the visit to a cemetery is the time for coming
to terms with the realities of life which of necessity include the
experience of death. In the serene setting of the cemetery life is put
into perspective.
An essential part of our faith is the understanding that we have
an obligation within the time given us on earth to share the vision of
our faith, to bring the good news that all things are gathered up in
Christ, that nothing is lost, nothing is wasted, “If the Spirit of him who
raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then he who raised Christ
from the dead will bring your mortal bodies to life also through his
Spirit dwelling in you.” (Romans 8:11). Our practice of the works of
mercy: burying the dead and comforting and consoling the sorrowful
are acts of charity to which we are called by our Baptism.
On Tuesday, November 13 th at 7:30 pm, all are invited to a
Taize Service in the main church building to pray for all the
faithful departed. The names of the dead who were buried from our
parish in the past year will be named and prayed for in the service.
Also, in each vestibule there is a pamphlet that contains the names
of those departed. Included within the pamphlet are prayers that will
assist you when you visit the grave of a loved one.
“The Church who, as Mother has borne the Christian sacramentally
in her womb during his earthly pilgrimage, accompanies his at this
journey’s end, in order to surrender him ‘into the Father’s hands.’
She offers to the Father, in Christ, the child of his grace, and she
commits to the earth, in hope, the seed of the body that will rise in
glory.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1683).
FROM FR. PAUL SNYDER
Faithful Citizenship
As disciples of Christ living today we are called to transform the
world around us. We do this by constant prayer that our hearts be
converted; we do this by asking the Holy Spirit for the gift of courage
to speak the word of God to our family, neighbors and friends; we do
this with our actions when they support the Gospel of Christ. During
this Year of Faith, we are celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the
opening of the Second Vatican Council. The Dogmatic Constitution
of the Church (Lumen Gentium) speaks of today’s disciples, “...led by
the spirit of the Gospel they may work for the sanctification of the
world from within as a leaven. In this way they may make Christ
known to others, especially by the testimony of a life resplendent in
faith, hope and charity” (Lumen Gentium 31). This is one of my
favorite images used in the document. If you have ever watched
bread being made or made it yourself, you know that a very small
amount of yeast or leaven has the power to transform the entire
batch of dough.
I hope we think of this image as we participate in the election
this coming Tuesday. As disciples of Christ we allow our faith to
shape the world around us like that leaven that raises the dough. We
give thanks and praise to God for the great gift of our country. We
are blessed to live in a country where we have the opportunity to
elect our leaders. We also need to pray for our country during these
crucial days that it upholds the rights of all, especially religious
freedom and the dignity of human life. The Bishops of the United
States remind us that, “As Catholics, we should be guided more by
our moral convictions than by our attachment to a political party or
interest group. When necessary, our participation should help
transform the party to which we belong; we should not let the party
transform us in such a way that we neglect or deny fundamental
moral truths. We are called to bring together our principles and our
political choices, our values and our votes, to help build a better
world” (USCCB: Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,
www.usccb.org).
As followers of Christ we give our lives over to Jesus, and we
are called to serve others in his name. A few weeks ago, the Sunday
Gospel reminded us that the greatest among us will be the servant of
all. If we are the servants of all we need to promote the respect for
all human life. “There are some things we must never do, as
individuals or as a society, because they are always incompatible
with love of God and neighbor. These intrinsically evil acts must
always be rejected and never supported. A preeminent example is
the intentional taking of human life through abortion. It is always
morally wrong to destroy innocent human beings. A legal system
that allows the right to life to be violated on the grounds of choice is
fundamentally flawed. Similarly, direct threats to the dignity of human
life such as euthanasia, human cloning, and destructive research on
human embryos are also intrinsically evil and must be opposed.…
Disrespect for any human life diminishes respect for all human life.
As Catholics, we are not single-issue voters. A candidate’s position
on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a voter’s support. Yet
a candidate’s position on a single issue that involves an intrinsic evil,
such as support for legal abortion or the promotion of racism, may
legitimately lead a voter to disqualify a candidate from receiving
support” (USCCB: Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship). A
lack of respect for the dignity of human life is at the core of so many evils.
We continue to pray that all people value that all human life is
made in the image of God. The Lord has blessed us with much to be
thankful. I pray that we may we be that leaven in our culture,
sanctifying it by bringing the knowledge and love of Christ to all.
Have a blessed week,
Rite of Enrollment
Last Tuesday, October 23 our parish children who are preparing
for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist participated in a
special enrollment rite in which they signed their names to show their
willingness to begin their formal preparation for these two very
important sacraments.
I would like to especially thank Fr. Mark Brauer for presiding at the
Rite of Enrollment and impressing upon the children and their families
the importance of this step in their faith journey. I am very grateful to
Mrs. Mary Garlow for her expertise in planning the prayer service and
in giving the parish families a brief orientation on the sacraments of
First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Dr. Noriko Ernst and Mrs. Sarah
Evangelista are to be complimented and thanked for using their
musical talents to enhance the Rite of Enrollment. I am extremely
grateful to the second grade catechists and teachers: Mrs. Bev
Imesch, Mrs. Patti Law, Mrs. Cynthia Lazoen, and Mrs. Sharon
Quinn. Thank you for being there and offering your help and support
during the signing rite and with the distribution of the Mass books.
Thanks to Mrs. JoAnne Moore for being our sacristan, server, cross
bearer, and invaluable helper. I am grateful to Mrs. Pat Ernst for
providing the liturgical binders that were used for the signing
ceremony during the Rite of Enrollment. Thanks, Ms. Sue Siemiesz,
for all your work beforehand to make sure that registration forms
were mailed out, the worship aids and brochures printed, and the
Church set up; also for expediting the collection of the forms and
fees. Your organizational abilities are awesome and greatly admired!
Cross Connection Ministries is an important piece
of the Confirmation program. These projects are not
like the hours counted or projects completed for scouting
helping Candidates grow in their understanding of
discipleship, discover their gifts and talents and hinge
on relationship with neighbor and God. As we reach
out in love to our neighbor we find union with God.
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
by Bud Ozar
In a family children are taught to be respectful
if they want to be respected, to share, if they want their fair share and
to listen if they want to be heard. Family life rescues us from
arrogance by teaching us to love others as we love ourselves.

INAUGURAL TRUNK OR TREAT “SPOOKTACULAR” FUN!
If you were looking for Christ this past Saturday, he was hanging with nearly 300 young people, parents, grandparents, young adults and
good friends at Sorrows’ Inaugural Trunk or Treat! God blessed us with answered prayer – GREAT weather – and we rocked it out with well
decorated trunks, awesome costumes, committed young people and a true blessing – a handful of merciful adult volunteers who stepped up and
saved the day!
Bragging rights for the next year and the top three winners of our Trunk Decorating Contest go to: the Amouri Family – First Place; Ghassan
Family - Second Place; the Almaki Family - Third Place! Next year’s challengers know they have to raise the bar high – these trunks rocked!
Look for photos of the day on the OLS Facebook page (Our Lady of Sorrows Parish – Farmington MI).
First, I thank those young people who stepped up to be Living Saints, and at the touch of a button came alive and talked about their lives,
after praying with each group that stood in front of them. This was the reason for the day. Halloween is fun – but being Catholic is MORE fun!
When you can get young people to make this kind of commitment, to show this kind of leadership, well then, you have pushed back against the
culture that seeks to consume us and really made a difference. I am so very proud of Lilian Lebednick, Kailey Alessi, Olivia Warner, Marisa
Kaddis, Dean Hubbert, Grace Pleace and the Sandoval sisters! You guys totally rock! You are a blessing to me, and the people of Sorrows.
Don’t ever forget that!
To the young people who manned the youth ministry van, got dressed up, decorated it and handed out candy – THANK YOU! Grant Prior,
Ryan Kotlinski, Carla Guerreso and Cristina Rotundo. You rock too! Meghan Meyers wore the GoodNeigbear suit at the indentured
servant’s car – and was a hit with all the people! You are all terrific – and also a blessing to me and the people of Sorrows.
I was aching for help and at the last minute a merciful number of people did step up – we could have used many more and those who did
help really worked very, very hard. I hope they had time to enjoy the event! I am so grateful to God, to Jill Mott, Barb Poniatowski and
Theresa Samonie for ‘womaning’ the caramel apple dipping and topping area of the day. Yeoman’s work and tough duty! Mark Lebednick
manned the kitchen and cooked all the hot dogs, while his wife Carol and Sorrows’ Dad Larry Alessi wrapped and schlepped and served! A
handful of you pulled off what should have been 10 people – and I am so very grateful for all your hard work and your commitment.
What a day!
We also thank the 34 who decorated their cars so beautifully, handed out candy, and really worked and made an effort to be creative and
fun! A number of parish groups hosted cars: Youth Group, Young Adults, Christian Service, Marriage Encounter, Dignity of Life, The Drama
Club and Athletics. Thanks for being team players and working to build community here at Sorrows right along with families. Also, the Achos
(grandparents) hosted a car so we had a beautiful intergenerational thing going on! Kids in strollers, kids, teens, young adults, families, seniors – we
had it going on! Dear people of God - that’s Church!
Fr. Paul said he loved the community around the tables in the cafeteria jammed with people making new friends! One parent said she
really liked that it was a midday event, so you could see the kids in their costumes. Another mom is already planning her car for next year! We
also heard second hand that a mom will make this her trick or treat for next year and forego door to door in the neighborhood!
