BIBLICAL STUDIES
Blackwell Bible Commentaries Series:
The Blackwell Bible Commentaries offer a genuinely new approach in
their emphasis on the way the Bible has been used and interpreted
through the ages, from the church fathers through to current popular
culture, and in spheres as diverse as art and politics, hymns and
official church statements.
This outstanding series will be appreciated by students, their teachers,
and by anyone who wishes to understand how the Bible has been
interpreted down the ages, and is still used in contemporary culture.
Further information about the series is available from the Blackwell
Bible Commentaries website at http://www.bbibcomm.net/
1 & 2 Thessalonians Through
the Centuries
Anthony C. Thiselton
University of Nottingham, UK
Thiselton’s reception history commentary on
the first two of Paul’s epistles investigates
the evolution of religious beliefs and practices
resulting from the letters, and their impact on
social and political developments across the
centuries. It also demonstrates how these
events and changing customs in turn influenced the interpretation
of the letters. Thiselton’s analysis provides a broad range of original
perspectives, offering the reader a depth and appreciation of these
two important letters. In discussing the content, setting, and
authenticity of the two Thessalonian letters, Thiselton examines the
responses from leading scholars, poets, hymn writers, preachers,
theologians, and biblical scholars throughout the ages.
Written by a leading New Testament specialist, the result is a text that
offers genuinely new and illuminating insights into the evolution of the
reception of these two early epistles.
Six Minor Prophets
New
Through the Centuries
Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai,
Zechariah and Malachi
Richard Coggins & Jin H. Han
Formerly of King’s College, London, UK; New York
Theological Seminary, USA
The Minor Prophets (Nahum, Habakkuk,
Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi)
have left a mark on the entire span of the
history of biblical reception disproportionate to the brevity of the
books. Suggestive allusions and references turn up throughout
ancient, mediaeval and modern literature, as well as in sculpture
and paintings. Within the rich and complex reception history of the
Prophets, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, have a special role to play
in both Jewish and Christian tradition. They are known collectively as
“the last of the prophets” for after them the spirit of prophecy died
out. In Jewish tradition they thus bridge the gap, as it were, between
the age of prophecy and the age of the Torah. In Christian Bibles their
role is different but also pivotal: located at the very end of the Old
Testament the three last prophets point dramatically, in numerous
familiar phrases and images, towards fulfilment in the Gospels which
immediately follow them.
