Executive Director’s Message
In 1978, the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) was created as a division of The New York Community
Trust to enhance the well-being of the people and communities of Long Island. Since that time, LICF has enabled
individuals, families and businesses with philanthropic interests to grant more than $100 million to charitable causes on
Long Island… and beyond.
The LICF is committed to ensuring that our donors’ giving makes a lasting impact on the issues they care about most.
Over the past 30 years, LICF has built a reputation for bringing people and resources together to creatively and effectively
respond to the needs of Long Island’s many diverse communities. We are proud to note that a growing number of donors
choose to entrust the funds they have established to the professional staff and leadership board of the LICF. These funds
are used to make grants that strengthen and support the nonprofit organizations working on critical issues that broadly
affect our two counties and take their heaviest toll on our most vulnerable populations and communities. These are the
grants that you will find on pages 4–6.
We are grateful to the donors who work with us and through us to make Long Island a better place for all, and we are
grateful to the Island’s nonprofit workforce not only for taking on some of the hardest jobs for the lowest pay, but for
doing them so well.
Through the generosity of caring Long Islanders a total of $9,663,682 was granted to nonprofit organizations in 2007.
We hope to see that number grow exponentially over the next thirty years.

To support the Center’s efforts to enhance the capacity of selected
nonprofit organizations through targeted consulting services.
Central Bellport Civic Association $20,000
To advocate for community participation in the South Country
School District to enhance community dialogue and foster
cohesiveness among all sectors of the community and develop
a comprehensive approach to community revitalization and the
creation of affordable housing.

To support capacity building and develop a more efficient
organization through leadership development.
Community Training and Assistance Center $180,000
To support a technical assistance effort providing intensive
services to a limited number of small to mid-sized nonprofit
organizations, especially those led by and working on behalf
of people in communities of color.
ERASE Racism, Inc. $25,000
To increase the number and diversity of organizational partners
and deepen their understanding of institutional and structural
racism so they can advocate and promote racial equity.
First Baptist Church of Riverhead $20,000
To support capacity building activities for an organization
serving a population disproportionately affected by poverty
and racism.
Long Island Fund for Women and Girls $20,000
To strengthen the Fund’s capacity to promote social change that
moves society toward full gender equity.
Roosevelt Public Library $20,000
To support staff and board development and organizational
restructuring for an important public library in an underresourced
community.
SEPA Mujer $20,000
To support organizational development for an organization that
provides education, advocacy and training services for Latinas
suffering from domestic violence.
Sustainable Long Island $20,000
To build the capacity of Sustainable Long Island's community
partners through a retreat, a newsletter, and an online
information center.
The Health and Welfare Council of Long Island $20,000
To support a strategic planning process following the departure
of the organization's long-term executive director.

Alliance for Quality Education $20,000
To ensure that the new school aid formula will be implemented
in a truly equitable manner based on need.
Fight Crime: Invest in Kids $20,000
To support an advocacy campaign directed at increasing policymaker
understanding and investment in early childhood and
after-school programs that have been demonstrated to help
prevent youth violence and crime.
Institute for Student Achievement $18,000
To improve academic performance of under-served minority
students at Hempstead High School through a Small Learning
Communities model.
La Fuente, A Tri-State Worker & Community Fund $20,000
To enable organized labor to better understand immigrant rights
through a series of educational programs and advocacy in an
effort to unite immigrant and non-immigrant labor on policy
issues relevant to both.
Project GRAD Long Island $25,000
To support an educational reform model that helps prepare
students in the Westbury School District to go on to 4-year colleges
with scholarship assistance.
Lack of Affordable Housing
Long Island Housing Partnership $5,000
To research and produce a report on the impact of multi-family and
attached housing developments on school districts in Nassau County.
Vision Long Island $15,000
To promote smart growth solutions to gentrification and displacement
while advancing quality affordable housing on Long Island.
Differential Access to Quality Healthcare
The New York Immigration Coalition $50,000
For Phase II of the Immigrant Health Access "Portal" Project, to
improve immigrants’ access to affordable preventive and primary
care through expansion to a third hospital in Nassau County.
Planned Parenthood of Nassau County $10,000
To improve and expand outreach and health services to Latinas
in Glen Cove.
Stony Brook University SUNY $18,000
To develop a Suffolk County Minority Health Action Coalition to
examine, address and reduce health disparities affecting minority
and underserved populations in Suffolk County.
Economic Injustice
ACORN $20,000
To support the "Financial Justice Service Project” to enable working
families to overcome the consequences of the growing mortgage
crisis and remain on Long Island.

To establish a bi-county legal assistance project that would seek to
prevent debt collectors from using illegal and deceptive practices
to collect from low-income people, the elderly and disabled, and
military personnel on active duty and their families.
Special Purpose Grants for Environmental Issues
Group for the East End $21,200
To develop and implement a Southold Conservation Agenda
designed to achieve local community and government action
that will improve the protection of Southold's undeveloped land
and groundwater.
Nature Conservancy New York, Long Island Chapter $60,000
To promote land and water preservation initiatives connected to
the "Long Island's Last Stand" campaign and to support lobbying
efforts to pass the Brookhaven Community Preservation Fund in
the 2007 general election.
Neighborhood Network Research Center $24,000
To support the Local Action on Global Climate Change project that
works with towns to pass clean energy action plans and endorse
Energy Star home standards.
New York Institute of Technology $5,000
To support NYIT students’ participation in the 2007 Solar Decathlon,
a national competition in which students design, build, and operate
a solar home.
New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund $20,000
To support a “Sustainability/Climate Action Agenda” that includes
energy policy, smart growth, transportation, environmental funding,
and protection of the ocean and bays.
One Region Fund $45,000
To support a tri-state collaboration focused on key projects to
improve the transportation systems of the New York metropolitan
region, including affordable transit-centered housing.
Other Special Purpose Grants
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rockville Centre $10,000
To support a Senior Response Initiative that will train volunteers to
recognize the needs of frail, homebound seniors and refer them to
services that will help them remain in their homes.
East End Arts & Humanities Council $4,000
To provide full or partial scholarships for school-aged musicians in
an area with the lowest median income on Long Island.
Federation Employment and Guidance Service (FEGS) $11,175
To support Prison Families Anonymous, a program helping the
families of incarcerated people.
Island Harvest $14,000
To support food rescue and emergency food distribution for the
hungry and needy in Freeport.
Westbury Even Start Family Literacy Program $6,700
To purchase a comprehensive software program for English
language learners and to help pay for instructors.

Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund: $236,500
The LIUU Fund is a staffed field-of-interest fund in the Long Island Community Foundation that promotes
progressive social change. The fund was established by the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock.
Grants are made in response to competitive proposals received from Long Island nonprofit organizations.
The proposals are reviewed by LICF staff and presented to an advisory committee, composed of members drawn from
UU congregations across Long Island and appointed by The New York Community Trust, which approves grants
recommended for funding.

housing equity campaign, to implement a film project that will assist
public schools campaign for racial equity, and to determine the
feasibility of a racial equity in health campaign.
Five Towns Community Center $15,000
To support a leadership training program designed to empower
youth to become positive role models by serving and improving
their communities.
Gat e way Youth Outreach $20,000
To support outreach and participation in a visioning project to
revitalize the Elmont community.
Herstory Writers Workshop $20,000
To support a memoir-writing program for incarcerated women.
Long Island Gay And Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) $15,000
To establish a public policy and community organizing department
to strengthen the political voice and power of Long Island’s gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.
North Fork Spanish Apostolate $20,000
To educate immigrants and provide an understanding of the health
care system, how to access services, patients’ rights and information
on preventive medicine and nutrition.
Shinnecock Indian Nation Fund $30,000
To complete documentation of genealogical records of these
indigenous people as the Tribe continues its efforts to acquire
federal recognition.
Suffolk Coalition to Prevent Alcohol and
Drug Dependencies $20,000
To support an initiative to implement restitution and reconciliatian
practices in the juvenile justice and criminal justice systems.
The New York Immigration Coalition $20,000
To support a public awareness campaign on immigrant rights
to foster open and honest public discussion.
Uniondale Roosevelt Weed and Seed $20,000
To support an asset development project to improve the economic
well-being of low- and moderate-income individuals and families
in Uniondale and Roosevelt by increasing their access to tax
credits and helping them to acquire greater financial literacy.
National Committee of Grandparents
for Children’s Rights $18,500
To train caregivers on legislative advocacy, managing finances,
health care and health care insurance, housing, transportation,
children with special needs, education, and to offer them respite
care and emotional support.

The Mission Of The
Long Island Community Foundation
…is to enhance the well-being of the
people and communities of Long Island.
The Foundation does this by:
• Offering comprehensive services to donors,
supporting and enhancing their philanthropy;
• Strengthening, through effective grantmaking
and technical assistance, the capacity of the
Island’s not-for-profit sector to respond to
community needs;
• Providing leadership in identifying current and
future community needs, and convening people
and resources to address these needs; and
• Working cooperatively with others to encourage
philanthropy on Long Island or otherwise to support
the Foundation’s mission.
