Graduates of Training Course for Instructors (IMO Model Course 6.09)
CY 2007-2012
Enrolment record shows more marine officers keen in teaching
R
ecord culled from the NMP
Registrar’s Office reveal an
upward trend in enrolment for
the Training Course for Instructor
(IMO Model Course 6.09), says
Ms. Erlette F. Mendoza, Registrardesignate.
TCI is a mandatory course
for anyone who wish to venture in
teaching, be it in the academe or in
a training center per CHED Memo
No. 3 s.2005 and MTC Memo No. 3
s.1996, respectively. It prepares a
seafarer to become an effective
maritime trainor.
CE Jose Ramir D. Delantar,
Jr. said, “By now, I can feel the pride
brimming in me, knowing that I am
now qualified to be called a maritime
instructor.”
On the other hand, Capt.
Emerico B. Gepilano shared, “our lack
of confidence in standing in front of
the class to deliver our assigned lesson
is now a thing of the past.”
In the past five years,
statistics show yearly increase in
training output both in Manila and
Tacloban, an indicator that more
marine officers set their eyes in
teaching probably as an alternative
employment or a mission in life.
Asked what motivated him to take up TCI, Capt. Noel Escalera
said, “I started contemplating to teach two years ago after someone invited
me as assessor of a manning agency. Also sharing my knowledge to my
fellow seafarers is a way of giving back to the maritime industry especially
that there is dearth on the supply of marine officers.”
Capt. Escalera eventually took up assessor’s course to qualify as
assessor. He plans to teach and be an assessor while ashore.
Due to the growing demand for TCI, NMP increases again the
number of batches to accommodate more trainees both in Tacloban and
Additional training equipment acquired
NMP purchased new equipment to beef up its training services which
include 5 units Search and Rescue Transponders (SART), 1 unit smoke
generator and 2 units Neil Robertson stretchers, all for use of seafarers
coming to NMP for
skills upgrading.
SART is a
distress locating
device used onboard
lifeboat or survival
craft when abandon
ship occurs. Trainees
taking up PSCRB
will gain working
knowledge on the
operational use of the
device.
With additional
SART units
Manila training sites.
With merchant marine
officers interested in teaching, the
Philippines can look forward to a
steady supply of competent and
qualified seabased workers thus
sustain its position as the world’s
supplier of maritime labor.
available, more sections can be
opened starting January 2013
thus serve a bigger number of
active and aspiring seafarers.
The smoke generator
will be used by trainees in
Advance Training in Fire Fighting
course during the fire fighting
drill/exercises at the fire house.
The two units of Neil
Robertson stretchers are for
use in the practical exercises in
Elementary First Aid and Medical
Emergency First Aid courses where
trainees are taught proper use of
the equipment and techniques in
carrying injured persons on board
ship.
