host families
APEL has a select group of Host Families who offer friendly, safe and comfortable
environments to our students. APEL has built good relationships with these families
to ensure that students will receive the highest standard of accommodation and care.
Host Families are regularly reviewed to maintain the good standard of accommodation
that they offer our students. All of our families are located between 45 minutes and 1
hour from the centre of London by public transport and are all in easy walking distance
of a Tube Station or Bus Stop.
Accommodation
Host Families provide students with a single bedroom with all of the facilities they need to both relax and
study effectively. Bathroom facilities are usually shared but never by more than 3 people and some families can
provide students with a private shower.
Students are given their own set of house keys when they arrive and are free to come and go as they please
although Hosts will ensure that students are home safely every evening.
Host Family Life
Host Families offer a glimpse into the life of a British family; the homes we offer are usually located in quiet,
residential areas and give students a break from the City. Most homes have a garden and a living room where
family members and students can sit together in the evenings.
Catering
Host Families offer half-board catering, that is Breakfast & dinner everyday. Meals are taken at the table with the
whole family, students and hosts together. Catering for special diets can be arranged and Hosts will try to make
sure all guests are happy with the meals provided. Hosts tend to cook a range of food although the majority of
food prepared will be traditional British food.

host families
Our Families
Our Host Families reflect the mix of cultures and people in London; ranging from
families with young children to couples to single people. Many families have more
than one student living with them at one time, often from different Colleges and
as much as possible, from different Countries. Host Families ask that all members
of the house speak English at home; the mix of different languages and cultures in
the house promote learning and improvement in spoken English.
Students will be informed in the Accommodation Offer if a family has children and
their ages given, students can specify on the Accommodation Application Form if
they would prefer to live in a family with or without children.
Some families have pets, usually small dogs, cats or birds, students can specify if
they are not happy to live with any animals or if they have any allergies to animals.
All animals are met by APEL staff who inspect the house to make sure that the
animals are friendly and well behaved and a student will always be informed about
any animals living in the property in the Accommodation Offer.
Bookings & Fees
The cost of Host Family accommodation varies according to accommodation type
and category. Cost is typically between £185 and £275 per week. Host Families are
booked for the whole academic year although shorter stays can be made under
special circumstances. Fees include half-board accommodation and all bills
although some Host Families will charge extra, a laundry service is usually included.
Following an Application students will be given an Accommodation Offer, they are
free to ask questions to get to know the family before accepting the offer to make
sure that we have found the right family for each student. Once happy with an
Offer an agreement is signed and fees and deposit are paid to APEL.

private accommodation
outside of apel
Hostels
Student hostels are widely available in London. Hostels can provide Self-catering,
Half-board or Breakfast only accommodation. Student hostels are furnished and
provide students with a more comprehensive package than privately renting a flat.
Student hostels provide a level of security and allow students to live with a large
number of other students of varying age and nationality. Single rooms are standard
but hostels also offer twin or dormitory-style rooms with bathroom & kitchen
facilities varying. TV rooms, internet/ study rooms and laundry rooms are available
in many hostels.
Living in a hostel is an excellent way for students to meet other students and live in
a safe and independent environment whilst they are familiarising themselves with
London.
A deposit is usually required and is paid directly to the agency or accommodation
provider. All hostel accommodation rent money is paid directly to the
accommodation agency or accommodation provider, not to APEL.
The cost of hostel accommodation varies according to accommodation type and
category and meal plan. Cost is typically between £180 and £400 per week.
Private Renting
Any students wishing to rent a flat in London can only do so if their parents have
provided written confirmation that they are allowed to do so. APEL cannot provide
legal advice concerning the renting of a flat. However, we have a list of agencies
that have helped our students in the past, please contact the Accommodation
Officer for more information.
APEL recommends that students only consider privately renting if they are familiar
with living independently and that they consult a parent or guardian before signing
any tenancy agreement or making any payments
Vacation Accommodation
APEL Accommodation, in Urbanest and in Host Families, includes the Easter
holiday but not the Summer Holidays or Christmas Holidays. Students requiring
summer & Christmas accommodation should contact the Accommodation Officer
who can help to arrange this in external accommodation.
Urbanest accommodation closes during the Christmas Holidays - dates will be
published in the Accommodation Offer prior to booking. Students are required to
leave the accommodation during this time.
Vacation Accommodation is usually with a Host Family but may be in a Hall of
Residence. Students requiring accommodation during the holidays should contact
the accommodation Officer at least one month before the holidays.

social calendar
London has so much to offer our students
that we run a Social Calendar to help
students living in all APELaccommodation
to socialise, visit the sights and get
involved in teams and activities across
London Houseparents run the Calendar
and encourage our students to get
involved with the planning and organisation
of parties and trips at weekends and study
groups, cooking sessions and sports
teams during the week.
Urbanest provides students with common rooms, one
on each boarding floor and a large common room
on the 7th floor with large TVs, big seating areas and a
table where students can study, sit, watch TV or attend
our APEL parties!
Local sports facilities; Shoreditch Park and local gyms,
mean that students can join teams at Urbanest as well
as at College. Shoreditch Park has courts where students
can play tennis, basketball, football and table tennis.
Day trips allow students to visit the many attractions of
London under the supervision of our Houseparents;
historical sights, galleries & museums, shopping trips,
shows and tours which take in the sights of the city
help students to socialise with other students and
improve their knowledge of the city. Many attractions
and events in London are free; Fire work displays,
Chinese New Year Celebrations in Trafalgar Square,
London Boat Race, and many more.
Parties are held in Urbanest and trips start at Urbanest
but all international students are welcome to join.
Trips vary in cost but for many the costs are minimal;
public transport is used wherever possible to
minimise costs. Students under 18 must have parental
permission to attend the trips and activities, and
parents & guardians will be given plenty of information
about our Social Events throughout the year.
