Take to the air on London’s only cable car

FULHAM PALACE
This attractive 15th-century building was the
summer retreat of the Bishops of London. It is
now a museum with gardens, a café and an art

One of Europe’s greatest 17th-century houses,

HAMPTON COURT PALACE

HMS BELFAST
Permanently moored on the River
Thames, this ship is Europe’s only surviving
World War II cruiser. In service until 1965,
it’s now a reminder of Britain’s naval heritage.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN
As the Queen overtakes her great-greatgrandmother
Queen Victoria as England’s
longest reigning monarch, now is the time to
visit Buckingham Palace (to 27 Sep; p. 28).
For the first time, the public enter through
the front gates and will be impressed by the
Australian State Coach (above). You can
discover what it takes to put on a state visit
in A Royal Welcome. Whether it’s how the
tables are laid, silver is cleaned or dresses are
made, this offers a behind-the-scenes look at
the monarchy. Further afield, the Windsor
Festival (from 20 Sep) marks the occasion
with a 6. 37km trail, symbolising the Queen’s
63 years, seven months and two days on the
