From the Desk of…
Alan Stern, President
As summer races to an end and the High Holy Days rapidly
approach, I find myself reflecting on the past two
years, during which a group of concerned and devoted
Jewish people planned, struggled, argued, worked for,
and helped to create Congregation Torat El.
This unification has been an eventful process. What
seemed obvious, logical, necessary, and simple to some
has turned into a very complex and somewhat flawed effort
to do right. And my premonition that this endeavor
would be fraught with surprises, obstacles, pitfalls, and
unimaginable stresses has, indeed, proven correct.
Ultimately, however, we have done right. Our Kehilah
Kedoshah, our sacred community, is emerging beautifully.
New friendships and alliances are forming among those
who have helped to carve out an initial vision of Torat El.
The thousands of human hours that continue to be
devoted to this process are beginning to see a tangible
result.
As the memorial plaques of all three heritage congregations
add to the beauty and significance of the Monmouth
Road Sanctuary, as the ritual practices of Torat El form to
combine the best and most profound traditions we’ve
known, as our officers and Trustees successfully continue
the difficult process of securing a community that will keep
our Judaism alive and flourishing for generations, and as
we welcome Rabbi Aaron Schonbrun and his family to our
midst, these High Holy Days take on added meaning for
me and, I hope, for you.
There are no words to adequately thank everyone who
has given so generously of their time, their expertise,
their assets, their passion, and their love to give birth to
Congregation Torat El. The same can be said for the
spouses and children of the people whose sacrifice
allowed them to put so much of their personal time into
this process. And, on a very personal note, I am especially
grateful to the many members of this community
who have offered words of support and encouragement
throughout a very stressful process.
For many of us, coming together in a few short days is
the culmination of a huge effort to create a great community.
For some, it is a marriage of necessity. For some, it
is downright scary. And for some, it is all of the above.
As our holiest time approaches, it is time to embrace the
difficult but profoundly rewarding tradition to let go of the
past and forgive. It is time to realize that our differences are
insignificant when we realize that we are all children and
servants of the Almighty. It is time to, once again, come
together, smile, shake hands, and say L’Shanah Tovah
Tikateivu as we enter a period of introspection and looking
forward.
Congregation Torat El is a work in progress. From this day
forward, we will build on our successes and learn from
those things that need improvement. Through it all, let us
be inspired and driven by the words above our Ark —
“B’naareinu ub’zikneinu neleich,” Let us walk with our
Youth and with our Elders — to make Congregation
Torat El the spiritual and communal home we want and
need.
I look forward to greeting you during Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur. May you and yours be inscribed in the Book
of Life in a year of growth, health, peace, and prosperity.
Fraternally,
