Human Miracles
The holiday of Hannukah is almost upon us. In addition
to being a holiday of Jewish pride where we express the
importance of being committed to Jewish values, beliefs
and practices, Hannukah is a holiday where we
celebrate miracles. As we light a new candle each night
we recall the miracle of the oil that kept the Menorah in
the re-dedicated temple burning for eight days and
eight nights. But miracles often seem hard to come by.
There is a wonderful story about this that is written by
Chaim Potok. Potok writes about a Hannukah when
“darkness almost overpowered the light.” The year was
1938 and the world seemed to be very dark indeed.
Potok writes:
My world seemed thick with that darkness
when Hanukkah came that year on the
twenty-fifth of December. I remember my
father chanting the blessings over the first
candle on the first night of the festival. He
was short and balding, and he chanted in a
thin, intense voice. I stood between him and
my mother, gazing at the flame of the first
night’s candle. The flame seemed pitiful
against the malignant darkness outside the
window. I went to bed and was cold with
dread over the horror of the world.
The next night two candles were lighted.
Again my father chanted...”We kindle these
lights on account of the miracles, the deliverances,
and the wonders which You did for
our ancestors...during all eight days of
Hanukkah these lights are sacred...We are
only to look at them, in order that we may
give thanks unto Your name, for Your
miracles, Your deliverances, and Your wonders.”
I wanted a miracle. But there was no miracle
during that Hannukah. Where was God? I
kept dreaming of burning synagogues.
On the eighty day and final night of the
festival I stood with my parents in front of
the burning candles. The darkness mocked
their light. I could see my parents glancing
at me. My mother sighed. Then my father
murmured my name. “You want another
miracle?” he asked wearily. I did not
respond.
From The Rabbi’s Study...
5
“Yes” he said. “You want another
miracle.” He was silent a moment. Then
he said, in a gentle, urging voice. “I
also want another miracle. But if it does
not come, we will make a human miracle. We
will give the world the special gifts of our
Jewishness. We will not let the world burn
our souls.”
The candles glowed feebly against the dark
window. “Sometimes I think man is a greater
miracle-maker than God,” my father said
tiredly, looking at the candles. “God does not
have to live day after day on this broken
planet. Perhaps you will learn to make your
own miracles. I will try to teach you how to
make human miracles.
I lay awake, a long time that night and did
not believe my father could ever teach me
that. But now, decades later, I think he
taught me well. And I am trying hard to
teach it to my children (Zion, Spectre, A
Different Light; originally published in
McCall’s Magazine, 100, No. 3, Dec. 1972, p.
30)
While the world is certainly not in the same place that it
was during the dark periods of WWII, as we celebrate
Hannukah this year we cannot help but notice that our
world also seems very dark at times. Yet each night, as
we actively reach out to light the next candle, we must
remember that light does not always appear on its own.
More often than not, our role in this world is to be like
the Shamash (the helper candle), serving as God’s helper
by bringing light into this world. It is in that spirit that
this Hannukah, as you light your Hannukiot, I invite each
of you to explore what you and your families are doing to
make human miracles. May the light of our Hannukah
candles be an inspiration to all of us as we pursue this
holy task. Hag Urim Sameach! Happy Hannukah!
Please join me on Sunday, December 4th at
10:30am for an information session regarding
our trip to Israel which is scheduled for the
end of June 2012.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Rabbi Aaron Schonbrun

Cherie Weiss
Merely saying "thank you" doesn't express, even minimally, how grateful I am for your participation, and how proud I
am to be part of a congregation that has within its membership a pool of talent so broad, so deep, and so dedicated. I
must add a special tip of the cantor's kippah to our post-b'nai mitzvah readers. You are jewels that adorn our bimah.
I am aware of no other congregation that relies so heavily and so regularly and expects so much on the Holy Days
from its teenagers as do we.
To all our Yom Tov participants: I thank you for, once again, bringing honor to your congregation, pride to your
clergy, and joy to our worship. May you go from strength to strength.
Hi, my name is Julia Barofsky. I live in Wayside with my two sisters, Alana and Emma, my parents Dawn and Jonathan,
and my new puppy Lila. I go to Ocean Township Intermediate School. In my free time I love to play tennis, piano and to
ski. I enjoy spending time with my friends on the weekends.
For my bat mitzvah project I volunteered at the Alzheimer's center in our town. It was difficult to be in that environment,
but I learned a lot about myself and about others while doing it.
I am so excited for my bat mitzvah on December 10, 2011. I invite you all to come share and celebrate with me and
This year we will begin by studying the “Walking With the Jewish Calendar” series from the Ziegler
School of Rabbinic studies. Using both traditional texts and essays written by contemporary scholars
from the Conservative Movement, we will take an in-depth look at all of the major holidays of our tradition.
Class begins: Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Fall/ Winter 2011
Disecting the Saturday Morning Service
Do you get confused about when and where we bow, bend, stand or sit during the service? Do you find
the service itself confusing? Join Cantor Bruce Siegel as together we examine the history, structure, text
and melodic content of our Saturday morning Shabbat service. We will be using the same siddur found
in our own sanctuary. Why not come at 8:30am and help make a minyan for someone saying Kaddish?
It’s a mitzvah!
Class begins: Ongoing every Sunday, 10:00-11:00am
Exploring the Jewish Life Cycle
Why do we break the glass at a Jewish wedding? Why does a mourner “sit shiva” for seven days following
the funeral and why is the recitation of mourner's kaddish such a central Jewish ritual. What are the
differences between the ways in which boys and girls enter into the Jewish covenant? And, are there
Jewish ways to mark other life-cycle events between birth, marriage, and death such as sending children
off to college, pregnancy, miscarriage, divorce, retirement, or coping with parents who are aging? From
birth to marriage to death, to the many things in between, come and join us as we take a closer look at
the Jewish lifecycle.
When: Monday, December 5, 12, 19 6:00-7:00PM
[Festival of] Lights, Camera, Action!
Though we tend to think of Hanukkah as a children’s holiday, it actually has a significant message for
adults. Themes of darkness and light, Jewish identity, assimilation, conflict and rededication continue to
be relevant to our lives as Jews. Come and join us as we discover the deeper meaning of Hanukkah for
our lives. Join us after class for the Chanukah party!
When: Sunday, December 18 9:30-10:30am
College Packages: We are gathering addresses of students who are studying away from home. Congregation Torat
El Sisterhood normally sends out 3 packages a year (Hanukkah, Purim and Passover) to our college students. Most
students will be home for Hanukkah (first night December 20, 2011) this year due to Winter break. We have decided
only to send Purim (March 8, 2012) and Passover (April 6, 2012) this school year. The package usually consists of
something related to the holiday (Hamantachen for Purim, Matzoh for Passover) and other kosher snacks. The
packages are compliments of Sisterhood.
If you would like Sisterhood to send a package to your college student, please send their college address for the Spring
semester to therosenhecks@msn.com by December 31, 2011. Please type "college packages address" in subject
line. If your student will not be at college due to their Spring break or studying abroad for Purim or Passover, please let
us know so we do not send a package.
***New this year*** If you have a college student that is living at home and you would like to pick up a college package
in the temple office for them, please notify us at the above e-mail address. We will notify you via e-mail when it is
ready for pick-up.
Thanks again to all those who helped make the rummage sale a huge success! We want to thank everyone
who helped set-up, who worked the sale and who cleaned up. We appreciate everyone bringing all
their unwanted “treasures” and donating them to the sale. Also thank you to everyone in the temple office
and our custodial staff for their valuable help. We could not have done it without all of you! It is
time to start saving for next year! A special thank you to Jeanne Isaacson and Judy Solomon for their extra
help.
