Hearing Instruments
S Series
The Most Complete,
Advanced Line of Hearing Instruments
Thanks to Drive Architecture and the extraordinary new
features it makes possible, S Series is the most complete
and advanced line of hearing instruments, designed to fit the
widest range of patients and lifestyles.
Drive Architecture
Proven Performance.
Maximum Everything.
At the heart of every S Series hearing instrument is Starkey’s
newest, state-of-the-art integrated circuit platform, Drive
Architecture, designed to deliver maximum performance,
maximum power and maximum patient satisfaction.
Powered by multi-core technology, Drive Architecture utilizes
independent and fully programmable open architecture
processors that efficiently carry out tasks in parallel by
utilizing simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT).
Drive Architecture triples the processing power of previous
platforms, allowing for super efficient, high-speed
multitasking of signal processing algorithms for better
performance. All this, while significantly improving battery life
over our previous technology platform.
5

S Series
Feature Summary
S Series boasts Starkey’s newest, best-in-class features, so your
patients can experience more with superior comfort, greater clarity,
improved directionality and speech audibility.
Starkey’s industry-leading PureWave Feedback Eliminator puts S Series in a
class all its own with more robust feedback cancellation and intelligent artifact
elimination to ensure your patients get the best possible performance in every
listening environment.
Acoustic Scene Analyzer (ASA) is Starkey’s newest integrated system for
maximizing performance in noise and preserving speech recognition. Able to
instantly classify incoming signals based on unique acoustic characteristics,
ASA can seamlessly select and implement the most appropriate algorithms
individually or collectively, resulting in the best possible acoustic response at
every moment in time. The result is the highest level of patient comfort and
clarity in noise while emphasizing speech preservation.
Based on clinical performance measures and patient proven results
InVision Directionality, our industry-leading directional system, is designed
to better perform in highly complex backgrounds of noise. S Series boasts the
highest mean DI scores and the lowest operational noise floor, helping patients
significantly increase their understanding in noise.
In addition to superior directionality, Starkey’s new acoustic pattern recognition
system, AudioScape, with patented, real-time environment detection and
classification, adapts to any listening environment by seamlessly adjusting to
the patient’s preferred settings. An important part of this patented classification
process includes a channel-specific signal-to-noise ratio calculation to ensure
that speech is always given priority.
Starkey was the first company to integrate real-ear measurement into a hearing
aid. Now Live Real Ear Measurement in the S Series takes this capability
to the next level. With this system and the power of Inspire ® fitting software,
you can see the hearing aid output in your patient’s ear, in real-ear SPL, while
the system evaluates the hearing aid response and matches to your selected
target – providing you with the most precise fitting information available.
6

T 2 is a new breakthrough technology from Starkey that allows your patients
to control their hearing aids using any cell or touch-tone phone, avoiding the
need to carry additional hardware. T 2 discreetly and instantly classifies the
touch-tone signal and automatically adjusts.
Voice Indicators alert your patient to the status of their hearing aid, low
battery, memory and telephone modes in their choice of male or female voices
in a wide variety of languages.
Self Check allows you and your patients to perform a diagnostic check of the
microphone, circuit and receiver by opening and closing the battery door three
times. This information is then retained for you to view and use in counseling.
Reminder offers you the option of programming audible voice or tone
reminders for follow-up appointments and maintenance checks.
Automatic Telephone Solutions (ATS) automatically detects telephone use
and adjusts to the optimal acoustic frequency response for telephone listening.
Music & Television Performance offers new memory programs designed for
optimal performance for two of the most important environments based on
patient feedback.
With Inspire 2009 you now have a more personal, accurate way to fit and
counsel your patient including enhanced Live Real Ear Measurement,
Live Speech Mapping and e-STAT. A precise fitting is critical to creating
successful patient outcomes, which is why this system is integrated into all
S Series models and technology levels.
Live 3D Speech Mapping allows you to verify how the hearing aid processes
speech, or any live acoustic input, in real time. Additionally, the Live Speech
Mapping display engages the patient and family in the fitting process, resulting
in greater understanding and acceptance.
7

S Series
Feature Summary, cont’d
With Lifestyle Solutions, you can discuss the various environments your
patients experience throughout their daily lives to help determine the
technology level that is most appropriate for their lifestyle.
Let patients and their loved ones experience the impact hearing loss can
have by giving a live demonstration with our Hearing Loss Simulator, which
has been enhanced to feature writing tools that allow you to draw or make
comments directly on the screen that can be printed out for your patients.
Surround Town continues to be the best breakthrough audio simulator of
its time and gives your patients a deeper understanding of real-world listening
Earmold Selections

Earmold Selection
Earmold Style Versus Hearing Loss
When selecting the style of earmold, consider the type of hearing instrument
prescribed. Please note that high gain instruments require a tighter seal than mild
gain instruments. Shell and Skeleton molds generally provide the best acoustic seal.
Severity of Hearing Loss
Earmold Style Mild Moderate Severe-Profound
Receiver • •
Shell • • •
Half Shell • •
Canal • •
Canal Lock • •
Skeleton • • •
Semi-Skeleton • •
Non-Occluding • •
Factors to Consider When Choosing Materials
Texture of the ear: A soft ear will make insertion of an earmold more difficult. In this
case, a rigid mold would be a better choice.
Possible allergies to material: There are a variety of materials that are less likely to
cause an allergic reaction. These non-allergenic materials can be either rigid or soft.
Power of hearing instrument: A high power hearing instrument will have more of a
tendency to feed back than a mild gain instrument. A softer material will tend to seal
better than a rigid material. There are several materials available offering a range
of softness.
Earmold Selections
Custom Earmold Colors
Please note that color availability and appearance will vary according to material and
specific style. Camouflage and glitter–based colors are also available. Please consult
the order form or your sales representative for specific ordering instructions. Custom
colors can also be created using a mixing process. Contact your sales representative
for additional information.
Available Materials
Most Rigid
Lucite
Lucite is a clear, rigid acrylic
material. It is the most
commonly used earmold
material. It is cosmetically
appealing and available
in all styles and various
colors. Lucite is easily
modified by the hearing
care professional.
Digital SLS
Earmolds made by scanning
and modeling in a virtual
setting of stereolithography
are known as Digital SLS.
Digital SLS is a process
technology that optimizes
earmold fit for comfort and
performance. It is available
in a Lucite, clear form on the
following selected styles:
direct tube, shell, ¾ shell,
half shell, canal, canal lock,
and non-occluding type G.
Lucite with Flex Canal
The Flex Canal mold
combines the cosmetic
and convenient properties
of Lucite with the comfort
and sealing properties of
Starflex. It is recommended
for fitting moderate to
severe hearing losses. It is
available in all styles except
non-occluding. Flex Canals
are not compatible with
acoustic modifiers.
Polyethylene
Polyethylene is a smooth,
waxy, non-allergenic material
which is fairly rigid. White
is the only color available.
Modification of polyethylene
is not recommended. This
material is recommended
only for cases where
an allergy problem has
been determined. Also, it is
recommended that an
elbow attachment be used
for polyethylene molds.
Starflex
Starflex is a translucent,
flexible plastic. It conforms
to the shape of the ear and
becomes softer at body
temperature. It provides
a good acoustic seal for
high gain instruments.
Modification of Starflex is
more difficult than Lucite
and this material may harden
after several months of use.
Ultraflex
Ultraflex is a very soft, yet
durable vinyl material.
It gives a good acoustic
seal for high gain
hearing instruments. It is
recommended for fitting
severe losses, pediatric
molds or for patients who
cannot tolerate hard
materials.
Modification is not
recommended.
Silicone
Silicone (medical grade)
shares the softness
and durability qualities
of Ultraflex, but is
non-allergenic. It is
recommended when a
soft material is needed
and an allergy problem
has been determined. As
with Ultraflex, modification
is not recommended. A
Vinyl Anchor is also a
suggested option.
Floatable swim plugs are
available for children and
adults of all ages. There are
11 colors available. Floatable
swim plugs are not available
in Clear.
Heat cured (non-floatable)
silicone is available for
earplugs and earmolds.
These are very comfortable
to wear, especially for ear
protection in industrial areas,
at home or at play. Pediatric
earmolds are made from
this material because it
is soft. It is available in
11 vibrant colors.
Biopore silicone works
well for canal and half
shell fittings and is very
comfortable for both
earmolds and earplugs.
Available colors include
Clear, Flesh, Red and Blue.
ProSeal
Softest
ProSeal is the softest
earmold material available,
but because of its extreme
softness, ProSeal molds can
be difficult to insert. This
durable material provides
an excellent seal and is
recommended for fitting
severe hearing losses. As
with other soft materials,
modifications are not
recommended. A Vinyl
Anchor is recommended
to help retain the tubing.
ProSeal molds are available
in translucent Flesh, Clear
and Brown colors.
Half Shell Mold
The Half Shell Mold offers a
comfortable and lightweight fit. Its
size provides easy insertion and
removal. Because of its smaller size
and lack of a helix area, the Half
Shell is not recommended for fitting
severe hearing losses. Shown in
Brown Lucite.
Canal Mold
The Canal Mold is the second
smallest mold available and offers
superior comfort and cosmetic
appeal. Canal earmolds require a
long ear canal for good retention.
Because of its size, the Canal Mold
is not recommended for fitting
severe hearing losses. Shown in
Clear Lucite.
Canal Lock Mold
The Canal Lock Mold is similar to the
Canal Mold with an added protrusion in
the concha. It is designed to be small
and inconspicuous like a Canal Mold,
but with better retention. The Canal
Lock is also not recommended for
fitting severe hearing losses. Shown in
Brown Lucite.
Skeleton Mold
The Skeleton Mold is the most
popular earmold available because
it provides maximum comfort and
retention. It is appropriate for fitting
mild to severe hearing losses and
can be easily modified to other
styles. Shown in Red Lucite.
