My American Journal…
Well, as usual, I was late to the airport and
Mr. Sharma and Jaissal’s family were giving
me those ‘interrogative looks’. I however
quickly kept my stuff in the trolley and the
three of us headed for check-in. We flew
from Delhi to Vienna, it was quite a tiring
flight (11 hours). We landed in Vienna and
trust me it was the best thing that could’ve
happened to us that time. It was ‘scheduled’
to be a four hour stay at the airport, but
turned out that we got two extra hours.
Whoever said that planning is essential for
success! We ate, slept, rested and did some
shopping too! Finally we got into the flight
for New York (NY). We didn’t realize how
quickly the time passed in the second flight
(9 hours). It was amazing!
We reached NY. Thanks to the uncertainty
of US visas, we couldn’t book the youth
hostels, but stayed in a 4-star hotel near
Times Square. Well it was awesome! But
not to forget, “money doesn’t grow on
trees”. However, we didn’t have a choice.
Well that evening we didn’t know a thing
about NY, credits: Indian way of ‘planning’
things ;) . But however we know how to
improvise don’t we? We talked to the hotel
manager who was from Lahore; he treated
us with great respect and courtesy. We took
a map and decided to go for a ship ride
around Manhattan but as I said our way
of ‘planning’ is just you know. We took a
bus instead, the bus took us all around the
‘Big Apple’ (Manhattan). It was a doubledecker
bus and our guide kept telling us the
history of buildings and landmarks. Well
we didn’t actually see anything except the
Statue of Liberty that day. We planned to
see a museum, Broadway and have pizza at
the world’s best pizzeria. And guess what?
We did it! It all went according to the plan
(probably the most overrated word!) . We
got up in the morning had breakfast etc.
Then we boarded our bus and went to see
the American museum of Natural History,
it was amazing and it was huge! We saw
African, Asian, North-American mammals
and saw the history of man. How the
world evolved. We also saw the astronomy
section, with all the models of planets and
real asteroids, comets, meteorites, etc. It
was quite a different experience. Then we
rushed to Broadway to get the tickets for
Spiderman, the musical. After getting the
tickets, we did a lot of shopping ;). Well
after sometime we were sitting in the
Foxwoods theatre waiting for the play to
start. The play was just out of the world!
It was awesome! The best thing in NY!
Trust me, even Mr. Sharma said, “I haven’t
seen anything like this before.” We kept
thinking about the play for a long time that
night. We packed our stuff and were ready
for Florida. In the morning, the regular car
broke down, so we got the luxury of going to
the airport in a Limousine. (the best things
in life are always unplanned!)
My experience with the host families was the one
which made the exchange different and awesome I
just don’t have the right word for it. I stayed with
two families; first were the Brenners. They were
Jews, extremely respectful and gentle people. I
stayed in their son’s room who was studying in
Phillip’s Exeter which is the best school in USA
and is considered one of the best in the world. I’d
now like to describe an ordinary American student
because I’ve been here every year since I was four
so I know quite a lot about the country and its
culture. A kid starts learning an instrument when
he or she is four and learns to read music when
they turn ten. So, they learn an instrument, they
have three seasons for different sports, they have
on going scholarships within the public and the
private schools for those who excel in academics
and sports. American kids like to enjoy themselves
but at the end of the day they know what their
goals are. In America the majority studies in
public schools. Education is free there till twelfth
grade (exception: private schools). The Brenners
were nice people; they asked me a lot of questions
regarding India. But, unfortunately all the
Americans think of India as land of poverty ! (The
movie Slumdog Millionaire has only confirmed
their belief). Anyway, we did go karting, went
around seeing the city, and went on a boat ride
twice. I went to see the everglades too with my
second host family. They were from England. But
I liked the first family more because they actually
made me feel at home and you know it was like as
if I was a part of their family now. Finally we went
to Disney World and the Universal Studios, which
was of course a once in a lifetime experience. The
whole Disney world is two times bigger than the
entire Manhattan Island! It’s not only a place for
small kids as we think it is. We did tons of stuff
there and my advice would be if you’re going to
Disney World (not Disney Land) then at least
plan a ten day trip! I had a great experience! It
was something different, exciting and you know I
learnt a lot about the different culture, behavior
and society by living with another family…
Across the Seven Seas……
A few months ago, going to the United States of America
was my dream. But my dream turned into reality
when I got a chance to go on an exchange program to
Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida, USA.
I was so happy when I got selected for this exchange
program. I not only got an opportunity to go to the
school there but I got a chance to go to New York City
and Orlando as well.
We (Pramod Sir, Rhitik & I) departed from New Delhi
on the 28th of April and landed in NYC on the 29th.
We stayed in NYC for two and a half days. We did a bus
tour of the whole of Manhattan city. The weather was
comfortable. The best part in NYC was the Broadway
show – ‘The Amazing Spiderman’. All three of us were
really amazed to see the stunts they performed. They
were daring and thrilling!
On the 2nd of May we departed from NYC for FT.
Lauderdale. There, we were picked up by one of the
faculty members of the school. They gave us a warm
welcome. The weather was quite hot compared to
that in NYC. We went straight to the school from the
airport. It was a drive of about forty minutes to Boca
Raton from the airport.
Saint Andrew’s School is quite a big school. The
junior school, middle school and high school are all
in separate buildings. The very first class I attended
in SAS was the English class. The teacher, Mr. Martin
was just like Vivek Sir. He taught us in a completely
different manner. For example, we were doing Julius
Ceasar in class and he told us to re-write the speech
of Mark Antony considering what he would say in July
2012. And he used to joke around so much.
Rhitik and I were there in the school for two days. And
we got two separate host families each to stay with.
My first host was a girl. Her name was Laura Herren.
Well, I have got to admit that staying with a girl host
is not very comfortable and it was a new experience
for me. However, I enjoyed staying in her house. Mrs.
Herren (Laura’s mother) used to bake fresh cookies for
me and Mr. Herren took me out to have coffee and
doughnuts. It was a very pleasant stay with them and
am thankful for their hospitality.
I enjoyed myself a lot in SAS. All the students were fun
loving people. But, they also studied seriously during
the classes. The teachers, too, were very friendly. They
all are fun loving people. They also used to joke during
the classes. I don’t know if this was bad or good for me.
Laura got unwell so I had to move to my second host
earlier than planned. This time my host was a boy,
Chase Farache. Everybody in the school would say, ‘ I
feel sorry for you Jason (They all called me Jason), you
are staying with Chase Farache’. But I enjoyed staying
in his house. We went on a boat ride and played a lot of
x-box games. His parents were really very helpful and
attentive. They took me out for dinner and a couple of
times to the mall also.
It was the end of session in school so we went for
Grad venture. This is a trip for the students to enjoy
themselves just like we go on our adventure camp
trips. We went to the Universal Studios in Orlando. It
was so much fun, the rides were awesome and I was
with friends!
I had a good time. Twenty days just passed by. I didn’t
really get to feel it. That is because I enjoyed my stay
so much. I thought the best part of my trip was Saint
Andrew’s School. I made so many new and good friends
there and had lots of fun with them. I will miss the SA
Scots and hope to visit them again in future.
Reverse Painting on Glass
Abstract: Reverse painting on glass is an art form consisting of applying paint to a
piece of glass and then viewing the image by turning the glass over and looking through
the glass at the image. This art form has been around for many years. It was widely
used for sacral paintings since Middle Ages. The most famous was the art of icons in
the Byzantine Empire. Later the painting on glass spread to Italy, where in Venice it
YOUNG POETS
DREAMS
Upon the shore where her dreams have died
she watches the tides swift roll
as the ripped waves
come touch the shore
a deep hurt fills her broken soul.
No wishes on stars nor dreams that dance
once thought they would all come true
the sun will rise on yet another day
This poor girl was left feeling so blue.
Once upon a time her future was bright
As darkness now fills her heart
She slowly walks up and down the shore
Wishing today would never start.
She went to a club with some of her friends
It is so hard too understand
Things are not always what they should seem
The unfolded events were never planned.
She will never embrace another day
Nor give her dreams or hopes a try
The Shadow
We moved to a new house
Which looked creepy and old
That was probably the reason
Why it had been sold.
That night as I lay awake
I heard a sound which was creepy
I thought it was our pet dog
So I decided to check though I felt
sleepy.
I went out of my room
And saw a tall shadow
It probably belonged to a thief
Who was slim and narrow.
I ran back to my room
And hid under the bed
And tried not to roll off to sleep
Keeping sleep out of my mind.
I waited and I waited
Till finally it was dawn
Then I got up from under my bed
Hoping the thief was gone.
I slowly crept forward
And peeped out of the door
And there I saw
The shadow in the same place as
before
Life is a Song
Whenever you got spears
We all start having tears
But remember my friend
It’s not the trend
As life is a song
You should move on!!
Whenever we get scolding
And we stand near the holding
We should not get upset
And make our cheeks wet
As life is a song
It should always play on!!
Whether its day or night
Or even if there is no light
You should try and try and try
And if you can’t make it high
So you should remember that
Life is a song
Thing sometimes do go wrong!
means “fond of learning”.
GENESIS–SUMMER
CAMP 2012!!
not desist them from participating in
Hotter days, shorter nights and sultry
winds!! And what a way to beat it? Along
came summer vacations with the much
awaited Summer Camp!! The camp was
planned from 14th May to 2nd June 2012
within the school premises. The aim of
the camp was to provide a platform to
enthusiasm and zeal. At no stage was
there any need for the teachers to chase
them for anything as they were always
forthright and looked forward for the
next planned activity. Even the
prevailing hot weather conditions could
