in front of the lodge. The lodge is the largest log cabin built in NZ and has heaps of room for people to enjoy a lunch and a few beverages. The balcony overlooking the carpark was put to good use for photos of the vehicles parked up too. 12 The trip for me was pretty special as I could really take in and be a part of the action on the day. Heaps better than mucking around with tent frames that have seen better days! The trip was made even better not just being able to take in the convoy of Volkswagens, but that I was riding shotgun with Pete in his ’65 bus, that as many will know, has ‘more grunt than a wild pig’ (to use an old radio station’s slogan!) The ability to cruise up and down a convoy lineup as we took video was testament to the amazing power that a 2110cc engine can produce… a very neat experience, made even better when Pete offered me the chance behind the wheel for the ride back to Hanmer… oh man… happy days… thanks heaps Pete! Saturday evening back at the campground saw us all gather round the BBQs and the dodgy tent I love to ‘wrestle’ with for a potluck BBQ tea that I’m sure satisfied even the hungriest of V-dubbers, even the Mad Butcher would have been proud at the amount of meat! The rest of the evening was spent relaxing under the stars… slightly obscured by a little low cloud! And so to the Sunday and a latish start to the day, a spot of packing up and then heading to the Powerhouse Café in the village for the farewell brunch. Good coffee and some more chat, VW stuff for those that wanted, and then farewells to friends from afar ready to head home. For some a dip in the hot pools were on the cards as the day was fantastic, bright sunshine, a real bluebird day and made a perfect excuse for a number of us to cruise home together. Every year, there are people that help make ‘Das Alpentour’ the weekend that it is, a special thanks to John Manshande for once again producing the stickers for the vehicles attending. As always, I want to thank all that came along and bought their classic Volkswagen out for the weekend. We’ll see you again in Hanmer Springs Alpine Village in 2009.
