Hello to everyone. Firstly, we would like to thank you for
your response to my first newsletter in the last edition
in June. It inspires me to keep working and sharing our
ideas, meetings and new projects at Shadow.

EUROPEAN PROJECTS
On the 7 th and 8 th of September, we have been invited
by ELRIG (European Laboratory and Robotics
Interest Group) to be part of the 3rd Drug Discovery
Symposium 2009 and demo the Shadow Hand.
The Exhibition will take place in the BTCC area of the
Arena & Convention Centre complex, in Liverpool City
Centre, and will also be joined by BPS (Brithis
Pharmacological Society) with 7 scientific sessions and a
technical workshop. The scientific session will focus on
early-drug discovery opportunities for communication,
networking and education.
In the ELRIG Robotics Workshop, the Shadow Hand will
be part of an exhibition of around 80 more exhibits. It
will demonstrate the scientific advances and capabilities
of the shadow hand for those who haven't seen it
before. I will be there with several of the Shadow Team
(and The Shadow Hand, of course), so please, come
along and say hello.

SHADOW AT MORE EUROPEAN PROJECTS.
ECHORD is a European Project to promote knowledge
transfer between robotics research and industry.
Starting this year, they are putting out calls for
experiments in human-machine interaction, complex
manipulation and networked robots. Shadow is making
available a range of dextrous manipulation hardware -
hands and arms - for the project.
The first Call comes out on 28 September2009, but an
opening event will take place on 4 September, at the
Deutsches Museum, Ehrensaal in Munich, Germany. This
event will be about exchange of ideas and partner
search for the experiments. If you are over there don't
hesitate to go, otherwise it's worth having a look

"Information Society and Media", European Commission
• Prof. Dr. Roland Siegwart – Autonomous Systems Lab ,

SHADOW IS HITTING THE ACTUATION
In July this year, we were invited to the première of a
new program by the BBC, "Bang Goes the Theory".
We didn't know what was going to happen, but we were
more than sure of an appearance on TV by some of our
shadow team and the Shadow Hand.

opening sequence and after a complex sequence of
actions, our robotic hand was triggered to press a red
button which lit the fuse on a rocket loaded with a
polystyrene sphere, then BOOM! The rocket made
impact and the show's logo disintegrated in an
impressive explosion. Nobody was hurt, but we felt
really sorry for Armando left cowering behind a curtain,
off camera, when the Shadow Hand alone stole the
limelight.

NEW ARTICLE ABOUT SHADOW, FROM AS FAR OFF
AS MEXICO.
In the last month the
magazine QUO from
MEXICO, wrote an
interesting article about the
latest applications of robots
and their influence in
several fields of modern
life.
They were delighted
that Armando De la
Rosa, was able to
explain in detail the operation of the hand, in fluent
Spanish!In the article they highlight advances in
robotics and foresee that by 2030, robots will be as
intelligent as primates, and goes as far to say that in
2050, intelligence could compare to that of humans. It’s
a big challenge for the Shadow Team.
The article highlights different genres of robots, purpose
built for entertainment, health care, imitating nature
and replacing human beings at war and even in our
work! And why not? Replacing chauvinist boyfriends
with someone who understands us better and knows
how to treat a lady sounds like a wonderful idea.
