The Rhode Island Economic Development<br />
Corp. (RIEDC) will work with the<br />
Rhode Island Builders Association to help<br />
speed local permitting times and lower costs.<br />
That was the pledge from Keith Stokes,<br />
RIEDC executive director, as he addressed<br />
the RIBA Board of Directors on November<br />
9 th . Mr. Stokes agreed to form a team of<br />

RIEDC staff to work with RIBA on permitting<br />
issues..<br />
“The legislature has given RIEDC more<br />
authority than many realize when it comes<br />
to helping businesses that could spur economic<br />
growth. When it comes to helping<br />
your members with permitting problems, we<br />
can’t supersede local communities, but we<br />
can intercede with them,” Mr. Stokes said,<br />
adding that his agency has a new office specifically<br />
devoted to regulatory reform.<br />
He also outlined what RIEDC is doing<br />
to bring the state out of the recession. If<br />
Rhode Island is going to recover, its leaders<br />
must fundamentally change their understanding<br />
of the economy on several levels,<br />
he stressed.<br />
“There is no such thing as a Rhode Island<br />
economy. We are part of the New England<br />
regional economy, with Boston as the<br />
center,” Mr. Stokes said.<br />
He added that Rhode Island’s antiquated<br />
structure of redundant agencies and jurisdictions,<br />
such as 34 independent school districts,<br />
brings with it costs that are unsustainable<br />
today.<br />
