Notes for LAVERNE SIMS:
Hugh Sims named his first born LaVerne for LaVerne Brown, a talented musician and a favorite aunt of both
he and Miriam. (LaVerne Brown was the sister of Miriam's mother, who was a Brown).
After LaVerne graduated from Montevallo in 1949, she moved to Birmingham and worked in the following
jobs over the next four years:
Secretary to the Head of Personnel; U. S. Steel (formerly TN Coal and Iron)
Social Worker, Department of Public Welfare
LaVerne rented a small apartment in the Forest Park area of Birmingham. She enjoyed an active social life
and attended Woodlawn Baptist Church.
After she and Weaver married, they moved to an apartment in Evanston, IL. After their first child Keith was
born, they purchased a home in a suburb of Chicago, Glenview, IL. There their next two children were born.
LaVerne was a homemaker and avid bridge player.
In a career move for Weaver, in 19__ they relocated to Richmond, Virgina, for one year. From Richmond they
relocated to Battle Creek, Michigan, were they resided until 1965. While living in Battle Creek, Weaver and
LaVerne had an active neighborhood social life which included a weekly bridge game rotating among the
neighbors homes. During the summer, a large area of the subdivision (232 Morningside Drive, Battle Creek,
Mich) was blocked off and a "block party" was attended by all the neighbors. Food, games and fun were
enjoyed the day long.
After Weaver's death, LaVerne and the children moved back to Renfroe, Talladega County, for a short time.
From Renfroe, she relocated to Birmingham, Alabama (2264 Pine Crest Drive) until 1970 when she relocated
to Orlando, Florida. While in Birmingham, LaVerne was very involved in the Republican party. In addition,
she attended Sanford University working on her graduate degree. While in Birmingham, her social life
remained full with bridge parties, days by the pool at Vestavia Country Club and work with the Boy's and
Girl's Scouts.
In 1970, LaVerne, Lisa and John relocated to Orlando, Florida (1712 Needlewood Lane). While living in
Orlando, LaVerne worked as Secretary/Treasurer for Kennedy Skylights, a closely held business that
manufactured Kodak plastic skylights. The company was owned by John Morgan Kennedy, Sr. After the
death of Mr. Kennedy's wife, he asked LaVerne to be his wife and she agreed. They were married in 197? in
Pine Hills, Orlando, Florida. Mr. Kennedy bought his bride a new home at 3228 Sherringham Road, in Pine
Hills, Florida. They remained there enjoying an active social, family and church life.
In the early 1980's, they relocated to Ponderosa Subdivision in Talladega, to be near LaVerne's family and
grandchildren. LaVerne's remained in Talladega until shortly after the death of John Kennedy when she
moved once more to the Crestwood area, in Birmingham, Alabama.
