FLVF Gets Venetian Blind Funding
October was Domestic
Violence Awareness month.
Victims of domestic violence
and rape need a place of
refuge; a place to talk with
counselors; a place to feel
secure in learning to deal
with their emotions and
other aspects of their
distress.
Granville County is very
fortunate to have the
Families Living Violence
Free Center where these
clients can seek help. Many
smaller North Carolina
counties have none. The
center is a Not-for-profit
organization and in order to
keep the Center in tip-top
shape, while offering its clients
first-rate help, FLVF needs
financial and volunteer
support from the community.
Recently, two local
organizations began Domestic
Violence Awareness month by
honoring the work done by
Director, Lauren Rene and her
staff with donations to
purchase venetian blinds for
the center. Cindy Fink, owner
of Bella Windows started the
ball rolling with a donation of
venetian blinds for several
windows of the center.
Furthermore, Fink presented
the center’s need for more
blinds to the Oxford United
Methodist Church’s Deborah
Circle and this group
presented the FLVF center
with $250.00 from their
community outreach funds.
The Deborah Circle earned
their community outreach
funds by holding pre-
Thanksgiving pie sale, a pre-
Christmas cinnamon bun
bake sale and a once-a-year
yard sale.
Meanwhile, the Oxford
Woman’s Club held a raffle,
during the September Hot
Sauce Contest event, for a
$100.00 WalMart Gift Card
and a small guessing game
contest for a $10.00 gift
certificate to Pizza Hut.
Proceeds from the raffles,
with added funding from the
club were earmarked for
blinds for the FLVF Center;
the result was a $200.00
donation. During the month
of October, The Oxford
Woman’s Club decorated the
trees in the Oxford business
district with purple bows as
a memorial to all the victims
of domestic violence and rape.
These ribbons serve as a
reminder that Granville
County’s incidents of
domestic violence increases
each year and the Families
Living Violence Free Center
needs community support in
order to keep its doors open
to help those families who
suffer or need counseling
because of the domestic
violence in their lives.
The Oxford Woman’s Club
will place collection boxes at
various businesses
throughout the county and
urge residents to drop in their
donations when they see the
box labeled for Families
Living Violence Free. Lauren
Rene, the Center’s Director,
once said, “We count pennies
around here!” So, every coin
you drop in will help toward
serving some useful purpose
at the Center.
Both the Deborah Circle
and the Oxford Woman’s Club
thank residents of Granville
County for their support of
the organizations’ projects for
community outreach.
Everyone working together
made a sizable contribution
toward the FLVF Center’s
goal to make the center a
comfortable place of shelter
and warmth. The FLVF
Center’s phone number is 919-
693-5700; make a call to offer
your help or donations.
