Local Food Banks & Co-Op Info Local Food Banks In an effort to raise community awareness, this page is featuring five Food Banks that offer help for those in our community who find it difficult to feed themselves or their families. The featured five organizations all depend upon donations from the community. In preparation for the upcoming holiday season and the cold winter weather, workers at all of these organizations are encouraging those, who are able, to donate food or money so that they can fulfill their mission of feeding the hungry in Granville County. Butner Church Council Food Community United Methodist Church 405 West E Street Butner, NC 27509 The Butner Church Council operates a Food Closet out of the Education Building of the Community United Methodist Church in Butner. Food donations can be made by contacting DeAnna Cash at 575-6954, Rev. Dwayne Alston at church office, 575-4303. The food bank is open on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 6:00 pm and on Tuesdays from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm. The food bank is open other times for emergencies and appointments only by calling (919) 575-4303 or 575-6954. Area Congregations in Ministry (ACIM) 634 Roxboro Road Oxford, NC 27565 ACIM Food and Emergency help with utilizes : ACIM is supported by two sourcesgrant money from Granville County United Way and donations from churches in Granville County. The organization helps around 50 families per day, (103 individuals per\day) with food and in some cases emergency help with bills such as electric bills, rent and prescription drugs. Recipients are eligible to receive help once every three months for food and once a year for bill. Sue Hinman, Director of ACIM stated, “The amount we can help depends upon the generosity of the churches that support us as well as other donors.” For that reason, ACIM welcomes donations of food, and money. For additional information, call Director Sue Hinman at 690-0961. ACIM hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am until noon Starting Nov. 1, 2010 on Monday and Wednesday 1-4. The program provides food staples, fresh food and like-new clothing, and in the last quarter provided 1417 people with food and 415 people with clothing. Headed up by a Ministry Team of volunteers from FBCC, the ministry buys food from the NC Food Bank when funds are available but depends largely upon food donated from people in the community. Anyone wishing to donate food to the ministry can drop it off at the First Baptist Church office Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm. In winter months, the food ministry is used very heavily by families that don’t have enough food to go around. Consequently, food donations from the community are currently desperately needed. The church also provides a limited amount of help with benevolence needs such as electric bills, medical bills and prescription drug costs when funds are available. Christian Faith Center 101 South Peachtree St. Creedmoor, NC 27522 Raven’s Nest Ministry: Christian Faith Center’s Raven Nest Ministry feeds anywhere from 40 to 50 people per month. Headed up by Sandra Joyner, this food ministry operates from the Christian Faith Center Warehouse located at 101 South Peachtree St., Creedmoor, NC 27522. The ministry purchases food from the NC Food Bank when funds are available but depends upon donations of food and money from the community to keep the program running. Those wishing to donate food to the program can do so by taking donations to Christian Faith Center at 101 South Peachtree Street. Food is distributed on Thursdays. Those requesting food must call before Thursday and fill out a form prior to receiving food. For further information, call Sandra Joyner ta 528-1581, ext. 225. Angel Food Ministry: This CFC ministry is open to anyone that wishes to participate and distribute food to 1,000 to 1,500 people per month. Each food box contains $75 worth of food, but cost recipients only $30. Specialty boxes that include steaks, filets, etc. are also available. The food, is well-balanced and nutritional. Each food box contains a selection of items from each of the five major food groups. Menus of what the food boxes contain are available each month at the front desk at Christian Faith Center or online at www.angelfoodsministry.com. The last day to place orders for an Angel Food Box is the second Friday of the month and the boxes are distributed on the third Saturday of the month. The Butner-Creedmoor News, Thursday, November 18, 2010 15a FBC Took Part In “Caring For Creedmoor” On the morning of Saturday, October 30th sixtyone members of FBC Creedmoor gathered in their Family Life Center for a cup of warm coffee and their instructions for the day. Groups were sent to complete projects throughout the city in an effort to meet neighbors and show that the church cares for the city it has ministered to for over one hundred and fifteen years. A group of about twenty were able to spread a truckload of mulch at Hawley Middle School in an effort to help beautify the school grounds for the faculty and students. Another group was assigned to repaint benches at Creedmoor Elementary School. Later in the morning two groups set out into neighborhoods such as Whitehall and Kristina Crossings to give away bags of gifts such as gift certificates from local business and information about the congregation and their mission. A small band of window cleaners, including the congregation's interim pastor, marched up and down Main Street to wash the windows of local businesses at no charge. Hot dogs were given away to hungry residents of Royal Pavilion apartments. All of this activity had one goal in mind - getting to know the neighborhood and sharing the love the church has for its community. The pastoral staff and leadership of the church were very pleased with the outcome of the day. Plans are to not just stop with one day of this outpouring but multiple opportunities for the members of FBC Creedmoor to go outside of the walls of the church and share the love of Jesus with the ones who are closest to them. First Baptist Church, established in 1895, sits at the crossroads of Main Street and Church Street. The Church and her members has long been a faithful participant in the life and history of Creedmoor. The Church utilizes an approach to reach the community and the nations through its five core values: Worship, Ministry, Discipleship, Fellowship and Evangelism. The podium style monument was ordered from a quarry in Georgia in August and installed in early November. The monument includes a US flag etched into the stone. At the dedication, church members gave special thanks to Jesse Murphy, Capitol Flagpole and Flag Company of Raleigh, and Taylor Wiggins of Wiggins Monument of Rolesville, for their guidance, expertise, professionalism, design and installation work. The Veterans Memorial is given in loving memory of five Grove Hill Community residents who loved their community and supported Grove Hill Church throughout their lifetimes: They are Linville B. Strother, Louise W. Strother, John Edward Fuller, Paul W. Wynn and Neva M. Wynn. All five names are inscribed on the monument. A patriotic service opened at 10 a. m. in the 1890 church sanctuary which was decorated with a red, white and blue theme. A number of US flag banners adorned the walls. Veterans and family members of veterans brought photos and military memorabilia which were displayed in the fellowship room. Flags were placed in the church cemetery honoring the veterans buried there including a young soldier who was killed by a sniper just after WW I ended. There was a tale of two area WW I vets who had a chance encounter while on a battlefield in France. Prior to Roll Call, anthems from four branches of service were played including: “The Army Goes Rolling Along,” “The Marines Hymn,” “Anchors Away,” and “Off We Go Into The Wild Blue Yonder.” It was stated at the service that while it was impossible to gather the names of all area veterans, 109 names were included in the Roll Call. Of the 109 names, 26 were Confederate soldiers, 11 served in World War 1; 22 served in World War II (including one stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941); three were Korean War veterans; two veterans who fought in Vietnam and one Desert Storm veteran. Four of the 109 veterans were women (including two who served during World War II). Pastor J. Lemar Wheeler presented a flag lapel pin to each of the 14 veterans present: Donna Carter (Army); Jack Cress (National Guard); Joe Metcalf (Air Force); Jesse Murphy (Navy); Fred Nelson (National Guard); Johnny Preddy (Army); Rancher Preddy (Navy); Tommy Preddy (Army); Randy Renn (Army); Lawrence Rivers (Air Force); Al Strother (Air Force); Pete Washington (Marines); Howard Wynn (Navy); and Rufus Wynn (Army). At 11:30 am, the ceremony moved to the flag site located about 1/10 mile from the church. After the crowd had gathered at the Memorial, “Reveille” was played by Dwight Harding, bugler. Dr. Lawrence Rivers’ opening remarks included an informative history of the three flags. Raising of the flags and placing of the wreaths followed. The US Flag honoring area veterans was raised by Dr. Rivers and Donna Carter. The wreath at the US Flag was placed by Johnny Preddy and Rancher Preddy. The North Carolina Flag was raised by Al Strother and Tony Strother in memory of Linville and Louise Strother. The wreath at the NC Flag was placed by Edith Strother Gill and Horace Thomas Gill. The Christian Flag was raised by Howard Wynn and Rufus Wynn in memory of John Edward Fuller and Paul and Neva Wynn. The wreath at the Christian Flag was placed by Anna Wynn Fuller and Betty Wynn Renn. Pledges of Allegiance to the US Flag and Christian Flag were recited as was “The North Carolina Toast.” Hymns included the “Star Spangled Banner,” “The Old North State,” and “Onward Christian Soldiers.” Closing remarks by Howard Wynn included memories of the church, the community and its residents. Howard Wynn said, ‘These flags fly today as a tribute to all veterans of Grove Hill Church and the Grove Hill community, both past and present, and to those who have supported them.” He continued with a message taken from the 4th Chapter of Joshua where God instructed Joshua to erect a monument to show future generations what God had done for them. Howard said, “In a similar way, this monument and these three flags that wave so beautifully will serve as a continuing reminder to all who pass by of what God has done, and that He is still working in the hearts and lives of the people of this church and community. After “Taps” was played, Pastor Wheeler provided the benediction. Those present returned to the church for fellowship and a meal. Making bags to pass out in neighborhoods AWARD [Continued From Page 1A] Commissioners Larry Robinson and Tim Karan, and Mayor Darryl Moss acted as communication liaisons to the Board and residents of Creedmoor. Korena Weichel, who has been with the city for two and a half years, was hired as the Administrative Services Manager to coordinate and assist with the creation and implementation of new finance-related procedures and activities. Mercer and Weichel spent most of 2009 reconciling the city’s records with various other agencies and positioning the city to comply with audit requirements and deadlines. By October, they had corrected the primary finance issues. It was then that Mercer recommended the next phase of his corrective action program, which transitioned the finance responsibilities back over to a Finance Director allowing Mercer to focus on Water & Sewer infrastructure issues. Mayor Moss and the Creedmoor Board of Commissioners agreed that this phase would allow the city to focus on continued compliance and maintenance of the previous years’ efforts, as well as the “fine-tuning” of the Finance Department’s activities and reporting practices. Mr. Ren E. Wiles, CPA was hired in December 2009. Wiles recognized that the city had positioned itself well enough to demonstrate its achievements by the publication of a Comprehensive Annual Finance Report (the “CAFR”). He then began compiling the newly reconciled data from the previous years for the FY 2009 CAFR report, as well as statistical information from the past 10 years. The city’s CAFR was submitted, then judged by an impartial panel, and was found to meet the standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story. Jeff W. McCauley, awarded the Certificate of Achievement to the City of Creedmoor. He presented the award on behalf of the GFOA. The GFOA is a professional association of state/provincial and local finance officers in the United States and Canada, and has served the public finance profession since 1906. During the sixty-four years the program has operated, it has gained widespread recognition as the premier indicator of excellence in Governmental Accounting and Financial Reporting. The GFOA has over 17,600 members who are dedicated to the sound management of government financial resources. Their headquarters are located in Chicago, IL with additional offices in Washington, D.C. McCauley stated that, “this is truly a significant accomplishment for the City of Creedmoor”. To earn the award, the City had to substantially conform to the program’s criteria, which go well beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles. McCauley further noted that, “this is the first time that the City of Creedmoor has received this honor and achieving this accomplishment reflects the professionalism, commitment, and vision of the City Manager, Tom Mercer, the Finance Director, Ren Wiles, the Finance & Administrative Staff, and numerous other individuals, as well as many hours of hard work. It also reflects a high degree of dedication and leadership on the part of the City’s Mayor and Board of Commissioners.” Mercer, Weichel and Wiles still take a collaborative approach in the day-to-day finance-related operations. Creedmoor Mayor Moss said that he, commissioners, management, staff and others are proud that the city has received the recognition for the major turn-around in 2009. In the award listing for N. C. Municipalities receiving the Certificate of Excellence in 2008, only four municipalities of the 74 recipients were smaller than Creedmoor. City Manager Mercer commented on the Achievement for Excellence saying, “It’s been a long hard road. It took a series of strategic steps with the right team to bring us to where we are today. It’s a long story, but a story in the history of Creedmoor worth telling.” Families Assisted The Tri-County Benefit Committee, serving Mecklenburg County, Va, Halifax County, Va, and Granville County, N. C., assisted several families in need in June, including Robert Nelson of Virgilina, Va. Several members of the committee assisted in building a handicap ramp for Robert and his wife’s increased mobility. The TCBC also provided John Fletcher, of Virgilina, Va, with a ramp for easier access to his home. All materials and labor were donated at no cost to the recipients. The Tri-County Benefit Committee is a Christianbased non-profit organization focused on assisting families during financial difficulties due to tragedy or illness. Assistance is available to any resident in the counties listed above that meets certain requirements.
