POTENTATE’S MESSAGE 

“WE ARE FAMILY” 

Dear Nobles and Ladies, 

If you missed the ride on the train to New Orleans for the Southeastern you missed a fun filled 

train ride. A great time was had by all, even the train Conductor. 

We just completed a very successful and rewarding Hospital Crusade Kickoff. There were two 

Shriners Hospitals For Children Ambassadors in attendance: Shay Eskew, as an adult product of 

our hospital system and fourteen year old Jeremy Gabriel, who is still in the Shriners Hospitals 

For Children. Shay was severely burned when he was eight years old, and after over twenty surgeries 

in Shriners Hospitals For Children, he is now 38 and married with 4 children. He did not 

let the unfortunate accident he endured hold him back. In October, he will compete in the Iron 

Man Competition in Kona, Hawaii, where he will swim 2.5 miles, ride a bike 110 miles and run 

26.2 miles all in one day. Jeremy was born with many birth defects, which included facial bone 

structure not being developed, his ears only being partially developed and in the wrong place, and his hearing not being 

developed. He can now hear and he has a beautiful voice. He sang two songs for us. They both shared their stories 

with us, and what great stories they were. Now, let’s all do what we do best, raise money for our hospitals so we can continue 

to help children like Jeremy and Shay. 

We are off to Panama City October 4 th for our fall outing. We look forward to seeing everyone there and having a 

YAARAB good time at the beach. 

Next on the calendar, is the 1 st Shriners Hospitals For Children Charity Classic being held at St. Ives Country Club on 

October 22. We need the support of all the clubs and units to make this a successful event for our hospitals. The Divan 

sponsored Halloween Party will be held October 27 at the Shrine center. 

YAARAB Christmas Tree Lighting will be November 17th. Bring your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors 

for the start of the Holiday season at Yaarab Shrine. 

Yaarab Treasurer Barry Hulsey resigned his position on the Divan at the September 12 business meeting. He had been 

on a leave of absence for personal and business reasons, while on that leave he was involved in a serious accident and 

decided to permanently leave the Divan. 

PP Steve Padgett has been appointed to fill the remainder of the 2012 year as Treasurer of Yaarab Shrine. This was 

done to comply with Imperial By-Laws.

NEW SHRINER’S SLOGAN 

Please help us spread the word to all of our nobles and their ladies, that our new Shriners’ Slogan is…. 

“All care at Shriners Hospitals for Children is provided without regard to a patient or family’s ability to pay” 

Phrases of “free care” or “care without cost” should no longer be used. 

BIRTHDAY DINNER RESERVATIONS 

Please remember the change in procedure for the birthday party meal. Starting with the October 2012 Birthday Party, 

non-birthday attendees will have to call the business office to make a reservation for a meal to insure that a meal will 

be available. This is an attempt to cut waste and help our Chef in knowing how many meals to prepare. With expenses 

being what they are, we must do something. We will order a dinner for anyone that contacts us, without a reservation 

there is no guarantee.

letters, telegrams, tickets, email, or other devices, by a unit, club, Noble, or group of Nobles, suggesting recommending, 

opposing, or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the temple is prohibited.

Chaplain’s Corner 

A Prayer of Thanksgiving 

Greetings Nobles and Ladies. Hope all is well. The season is 

changing and Fall is here. Most everyone I have spoken with seems to 

prefer this season over the others. The October and November months 

seems to be very busy preparing for Thanksgiving dinners and family gatherings 

as well as preparing for Christmas. Yes, Christmas is approaching 

very fast. But what ever month or season we prefer we should be thankful 

for all. 

Do you ever just stop for a moment from our busy schedules and reflect 

on all the things we should be thankful for? Often times we take life 

for granted, our families, all our spouses do for us, friends, our jobs, and 

most of all God. We often times don’t even stop and think about our own 

Shrine Center, how well it’s maintained or how the birthday parties are 

prepared for the nobility and our ladies. Many want to criticize but don’t 

stop and think how much work our Divan does, and the hard workers of 

Yaarab Shrine. I thank God daily for all these things including all our nobility 

and ladies and ask for all of your safety and protection. 

In all of our prayers we should begin with pureness of heart, repentance, 

and with thanksgiving. Often times we go to God in Prayer and go 

straight to the point, God I want this and give me that, but we fail to give him the thanksgiving He deserves. God never sleeps He 

is always watching, listening and protecting us and we can call on him any time any place and anywhere. Mark Twain once said, “ 

I don’t know of a single foreign product that enters this country untaxed except the answer to prayer”. Whether our children are 

in the house, down the street, or around the world, we can communicate with God on their behalf, having confidence that God 

sees their bodies, minds and hearts. Prayer, unlike long-distance phone calls, does not cost money. We don’t have to shop for 

the best rates. We can just call on Him any time and in this time of technology we need to be using knee-mail. 

As you sit down for that Thanksgiving dinner and begin to return thanks, let’s remember the Creator of earth Heaven and 

man. Maybe as we pray we should let God know we are here for Him as He is for us. 

Maybe a Thanksgiving Prayer as such, God, you are with us and we are also with you. We lift up our hearts Lord. We lift them 

up to you. Let us give thanks to you Lord. It is right to give thanks and praise to you. It is right and a joyous thing to lift our 

hearts and hands to you, God of Light and Love, in thanksgiving for the gift of grace. Before we knew the unsearchable riches of 

your child Jesus, we walked in the shadows and cloud. But now as you reveal radiance to the world, we join the hymn sung in 

glory without end. Holy God, Grace Revealed heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is the one who comes in your 

name. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Creator God, and blessed is your child Christ the Son. While wise ones brought 

Him gold, incense and myrrh, He grew to reveal to countless treasures, revealing the Shining Mystery which is you. Jesus broke 

bread and broke open your love for us. He blessed the cup and you poured out mercy for the world. Christ was promised Christ 

is born; Christ will dwell among us. Come, Spirit, dwell among us, your sons and daughters are gathered at this Thanksgiving dinner. 

Use us to reveal your gifts of love and light for the world. God of the ages, shining among us, we are yours, in Thy Holy 

Name, Amen! This prayer is based on scriptures from Isaiah 60:1-6, Ephesians 3: 1-12 and Matthew 2: 1-12. My prayers are with 

each of you. 

May God’s Blessings Be Upon You!

Twenty Five Years Ago

September started Yaarab’s Hospital Crusade Kickoff. The goal was set at $ 275,000. Many of the 10,800 nobles who 

did not participate with the circus, were asked to show their support for the cause. 

Rome Shrine Club held their annual Football Classic on September 19, between Pepperell and Model High Schools. 

The game has a history of 38 years with Rome hosting for the last 13 years. At a dinner meeting, held at Red Lobster Restaurant 

within weeks after the game, the restaurant management picked up the entire cost of the banquet for 50 guests 

and also purchased a $ 500 ad in the football program, of which went to the Hospital Crusade. 

Shrine Hospital patient Christopher Marshall and J.T. Glisson were both diagnosed with severe club feet. They were 

told they would never walk again. After two operations, at age 3, and three years in casts, Chris not only learned to walk 

again, but became the youngest pilot to fly across the United States at age 10. In 1927, J.T. Glisson, at age five months, 

was the first patient at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville with severe club feet. He spent nine years at the Greenville 

Hospital. He decided that he would ultimately become a Shriner, an artist, and a Christian father. He attained all of his 

goals and even made a recent visit to Yaarab Shrine as a Shrine Ambassador from Morocco Temple. He ultimately led an 

expedition to South America for the National Geographic Society. 

A Sunday, non-Sectarian Thanksgiving Service (Shrine Sunday – November 22, 1987) was held at Valley Brook Baptist 

Church. Yaarab Shrine’s Chaplain, Dr. James C. Bryant, and Basharat Editor, was the pastor of Valley Brook Baptist 

Church. 

Wedding and Formal World held a Ladies President’s Council Fashion Show on November 7, 1987, honoring First Lady 

Shirley Padgett. 

Yaarab Temple Oktoberfest ballroom dance was held, Saturday, October 10, 1987 from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. Music was 

provided by “The Yea-Rabs”. A “polka contest” was held and a German dinner was served. The Ballroom Dance was held 

on November 14. It was designated as a Thanksgiving Harvest Ballroom Dance with music provided by “The Yea-Rabs”. 

A Halloween Costume Party was held during the Country Western Dance on October 24, 1987 from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. The 

music was provided by “The Blends”. There was another Country Western Dance on November 28, 1987. It was announced 

that there would be no dances held in December due to all the Christmas parties held by clubs and units. 

Parades were held in Cedartown on October 3, Calhoun and Dalton on October 10, and Doraville followed on November 

28. 

The 1987 Family Photo Album named “Yaarab Temple Simitar” was delivered to the Temple Office for pick-up starting 

the week of 11/2/1987. Extra copies would be available for sale for $ 15.00 each. 

Membership Corner

With 2012 half behind us and planning for 2013 already underway, sometimes we get so busy with daily routines that 

we neglect to notice things that are not in the forefront of our lives. One of those things is the number of members in 

Yaarab Shrine. Sadly, we cannot continue to lose membership at our current rate without it affecting our ability to serve 

our great Philanthropy. 

For several years, Yaarab has been acutely aware of the membership problem. Your membership team has been trying 

to impact the decline through outreach and communication. Although we have not been able to stop the decline in 

our numbers, we can only imagine where we would be if nothing had been done. A staggering number of nobles decide 

to quit each year. Are we failing them somehow? We probably are. Maybe we should think about that. 

We will continue with the programs that we have put in place this year. One major program that we have been unable 

to make any progress with is mentoring. This should already be happening, but we have apparently gotten out of this 

habit over the years. Our top and second line signers should be taking up this mantle. As the body of active members 

has evolved from the men that helped us grow to our peak, to those who are now following in their footsteps, we may 

have forgotten one very important duty, education. 

When a Master Mason makes the decision to expand his Masonic journey and travel with us on the path that leads 

through our Desert, we have a duty and an obligation to teach and prepare him so he is ready for the challenges ahead. 

As newly initiated nobles, many don’t know what to do next. Neither did most of us. There is usually at least one man in 

each of our beginnings that took us under his wing and taught us how to be a Shriner. He was your mentor, and now 

probably one of your best friends, too. He not only showed you what to do and how to do it, but he kept you informed 

about what was going on and when to be there. This process does not take very long. Within a year, this noble will have 

developed a love for the Shrine and the people in it that will motivate him to not only bring in new members but it will 

also sustain him through the pitfalls that come with any organization this size. 

Hopefully now you are asking, “What can I do?” In a perfect world we would have a group of active mentors that 

would strategically cover all of Yaarab, but we do not have that. That means it is left up to us as individuals. It takes very 

little time and a commitment to share your knowledge with a few brothers that already want to be just like you “when 

they grow up”. You are already living the life of a Shriner. Why not take someone along with you. Our winter ceremonial 

will be coming up soon, and we hope you will attend and help to welcome our new Nobles into our fraternity. You 

could make the difference in whether they stay involved or never come back.

1 st Annual Sportsmen’s Raffle – Tremendous Success

Danny Huggins met David Swift of El Jabel Shrine at the July 2011 Imperial Session. David allowed him to store some 

equipment there, while members of the Potentate’s Escort rode their motor cycles through the mountains of Colorado. It 

was during this time, that David asked Danny to buy a Sportsman Raffle ticket for $ 20. Danny was immediately interested, 

thinking that maybe Yaarab could do the same type raffle. He started asking questions and found out that El Jabel 

partnered with the local Bass Pro Shop. He saw the poster and more details of how the raffle worked. He then realized 

right away that it would be a great opportunity for Yaarab, especially since Bass Pro Shop was popular in the Atlanta area. 

Danny asked his friends that were with him in Denver, about organizing a raffle at Yaarab. They all agreed that it 

sounded like it would work for Yaarab. When he got back to Atlanta, he called David Swift to get more details about the 

raffle. David referred him to a shriner in Detroit named Mike. He had organized the raffle there for seven years, which 

was where Denver got the idea. 

So, Danny decided to take the idea to Chuck Rager, Sr., to see if he, as incoming Potentate had any interest. Chuck 

asked Danny to get more information and get back to him and the Divan with the idea. 

Danny contacted a local Bass Pro Shop, and they were interested in participating in the raffle. Many conversations 

with Detroit took place. Danny then took all the information and presented it to Yaarab’s Divan. 

The Divan all agreed it would be a good idea to organize a raffle, since it had a proven success record in Detroit and 

Denver. In early December 2011, the incoming Potentate to be, Chuck Rager, Sr., gave his permission for Danny to move 

forward with the raffle. 

In the meantime, Danny had secured excellent experience assistance from Noble Don Malcom. It was both Danny and 

Don who, in turn, got the ball rolling for the raffle by creating a ticket, poster, and flyers. In January 2012, at the Circus 

kickoff event, Danny and Don launched the “First Annual Sportsman’s Raffle” for the Yaarab Shrine Center in association 

with Bass Pro Shop.. 

The “First Annual Sportmen’s Raffle” took place at the Gene Bracewell Activities Building at Yaarab Shrine Center on 

Saturday, July 28, 2012. Large crowds started gathering at 9:00 a.m. to ultimately see the results of the 110 prizes that 

would be awarded beginning at noon. Upon arrival, one could see the beginning of a tremendous amount of volunteer 

nobles, nicely clad in bright orange “Staff” vests. Special “THANKS” goes to all the nobles who sold a total of over 20,000 

raffle tickets that ultimately would prove to be the greatest successful event, so far, in the history of Yaarab Shrine. 

Function attendees could see from the smooth parking experience, through the great cooking aromas of hot dogs and 

hamburgers, and the door greeters, that they were welcomed and it would prove to be a most enjoyable day. From the 

beginning, the Yaarab Culinary Crew was busy cooking, in a continued fog of smoke, for the anticipated crowd. Visitors 

were welcomed into the covered patio, by the “Door Welcoming Committee”, who would ultimately direct visitors to all 

the venues taking place. Tables were set up for the purchase of additional raffle tickets, 50-50 chance tickets, and plastic 

ducks with painted numbers for additional prizes to be given away during the drawing. Large flat screen TVs were strategically 

set up all around the patio, which had been covered for the event, so attendees who preferred not to go into the 

auditorium, could keep up to date with an outdoor environment. 

After a welcome to all speech, given by Illustrious Potentate Chuck Rager, the invocation was given by Yaarab Chaplain 

Dennis Bellamy at 11:00 a.m. Lunch was served by Yaarab’s Culinary Crew food brigade. All raffle sales were cut off 

at 11:45 a.m., and the ticket drawing started promptly at 12 o’clock noon. Before the ticket pulling started, Raffle Chairman 

Danny Huggins and Don Malcom thanked all Yaarab volunteers, and noted that we had three CPAs that would monitor 

the total drawing of all the tickets and the computer ran process. All the winning tickets would be posted on the 

Yaarab Shrine website immediately as each were pulled. While the tickets were being pulled by different people including 

First Lady Pat Rager, Danny’s daughter, Jennifer, and others, the plastic ducks were being intermittently pulled to 

see who won door prizes that were provided by Bass Pro Shops. After the 110 winning tickets were pulled and all the 

plastic duck prizes were awarded, the 50-50 chance winning ticket was pulled. This concluded a day of great fun, relaxation, 

and fellowship for everyone in attendance. The main result that made it worthwhile was the overwhelming support 

and participation from a lot of people making the event a tremendous success. Please keep your eye out for the next raffle 

to be announced. If you missed the 2012 raffle, trust me, you will NOT want to miss the next one. 

Congratulations to now Recorder Danny Huggins for the great job that he, Don Malcom, and a lot of volunteers did in 

making everything happen. And, yes, thanks again, to all nobles who sold the tickets, and all the nobles and members of 

the public who purchased raffle tickets. The results proved to be a tremendously successful event for our cause.

News from Yaarab Units 

Arab Guard

It has been a busy summer for the Arab Guard. We 

missed the last Basharat so let's catch up. Hiawassee was a 

great success. We all had fun, some played golf, others 

went on the poker run on the lake, we also marched in the 

parade, and we helped serve the meal at the Luau. Fun was 

had by all!! The Old Soldiers Day Parade in Alpharetta was 

somewhat interesting. It must have rained two inches in 

20 minutes and we looked like we had been swimming fully 

clothed, but it was fun just the same, marching and waving 

at the very wet crowd who stayed with us. We also participated 

in the Sweetwater and Villa Rica parades. Bruce Shanahan 

has been asking everyone along the parade routes if 

anyone has seen a camel go by. Some folks in Villa Rica did 

say they had seen one pass by but it only had one hump and 

Bruce's camel has two humps, so we are still searching. It 

is always a pleasure and honor to escort the Divan in the 

parades. We encourage all of the Arab Guard to participate 

as often as possible in these fun events. 

This brings us to New Orleans and the S.E. Regional. 

The train ride down was a great time. Many of us truly enjoyed 

the streets of New Orleans and the great food and 

hospitality we found while there. Once again, we were 

dressed out and ready to parade but a lightning storm and 

heavy rain prevented our marching (see picture). We had a 

great trip just the same. 

As always, we at the Arab Guard invite any of the nobility 

and their ladies to join us on the first Friday of every 

month for our meeting. Hospitality begins at 6:30 p.m. 

with dinner around 7:00 p.m., followed by our monthly 

meeting. We usually have a pretty good variety of homemade 

dishes which we would be glad to share with you.

nothing like trying to turn around downtown on a dead end 

road. From what was translated, the train riders had a similar 

problem. How much liquor was on that ride? The 

Moose was on the loose while in New Orleans. Thank you 

for carrying on the traditions of the Staff being the standard 

that others look to. 

The Southeastern was a great success in Charlotte. As 

usual, crowds loved the vehicles and paradability of Yaarab 

Temple’s number one unit. From what was told, some race 

parts are missing from quite a few of the race teams that 

were visited. This is real dedication of the members to keep 

our vehicles in top shape. 

The parade season this year keeps coming up on days 

that decide to rain. Unfortunately, this causes a safety issue 

for the reloading of the top vehicles on the carry-all. 

MF and his great leader, are currently acquiring the parts 

necessary to mount a winch to pull these vehicles up the 

ramps in a safer manner than, wide open and hope we do 

not slide off. 

The hospital kickoff was informative with some new ideas 

to help raise money for our philanthropy. The Director 

has made a pledge of $30,000, { yes, thirty thousand dollars}. 

If everyone will get out and work hard, this should be 

an obtainable goal. 

Everyone is encouraged to attend the December Ceremonial 

Class. Emo is going to have some new gags for everyone’s 

entertainment. Support is needed in order for us to 

get back to initiating candidates, like in old times, and not 

indoctrinating them into the Shrine. 

Please remember our sick when on bended knee, and 

remember our soldiers, their families, and all of our first 

responders. The Holiday season is coming up quick so, let’s 

all say an extra prayer for those in need. 

Entertainers Unit

The Staff has been very busy the last couple of months! 

The parade season is in full swing. We have logged many 

miles behind the wheel and even taken a train ride to reach 

the audiences looking for a great parade. If you have not 

been on any of these trips you have definitely missed some 

great adventures. 

In the land of Voo Doo and black magic RC was unable 

to convince the valet to park the carry all. Rand McNally 

brought us right to the front door of the hotel, however 

there is not an “ app” for driving a tractor trailer. There’s 

I woke up the other morning to a much cooler temperature. 

Does this mean we are about to experience some 

cooler weather for a while? Well, I know you will receive all 

the news of the Shrine Center from the past few months 

and also what is about to happen in the near future. So, if 

it’s alright, I would like to give you something to read that 

is not all shrine news. 

I have found as I get older, on cooler mornings, I have 

more aches and pains. Now some of you, who are my 

friends, are older than me and you did not pass that information 

along to me. I need that information to prepare for 

the future. However, I do like the cooler weather and look 

forward to some more of it. I love the cool crisp mornings. 

Some of us, the Entertainers, have been doing a little 

traveling. I went to the mountains for a few days, Ronnie 

went to Florida, Jug went to Tennessee, and several of us 

went to New Orleans. It’s nice to get away for a few days 

now and then. Have you ever stopped to give any thought 

to why when travelling, you carry so much stuff with you to 

remind you of home. All the things you want to get away 

from you end up carrying with you. How did we get along 

without a telephone that can do everything but cook your 

dinner?

We use to carry a laptop but we don’t need that anymore 

because we have a phone that will do the same thing. We 

went out for dinner the other night and instead of talking to 

each other we both were checking our phone for messages 

and e-mails while we waited for our meal. More about that 

at a later time. 

I would like you to please keep our Brother and Noble 

James Childers and his family in your prayer. I’m sure he 

and Shirley would appreciate it.

Potentate’s Escort

Boy oh boy, did we get an unexpected surprise at 

Southeastern this year! With only 3 weeks to practice, and 

with 2 new riders (Gary Lewis, Billy Wages) for the Drill 

Team, they managed to put together a new drill routine, 

configured by Recorder Danny Huggins. They brought 

home a 2nd Place trophy out of seven competing teams. 

Great job guys. 

Also, just completed was our Annual Last One Out Rides 

Harley Davidson giveaway with over 550 people showing 

up for the event. We sold out early and even had some people 

show up trying to get tickets that couldn't get them. We 

still got them in for some dinner and fun for a reasonable 

donation. It was a great evening and everyone pitched in to 

help so things went smoothly. Thanks to all. The Escortettes 

also had a great evening, setting a record on their 

fundraisers, topping the $4,000 mark for the first time ever. 

Panama City is coming up soon so let's go down and 

have a good time for all the hard work we put in this year. 

Recorder Danny Huggins informed us at our last meeting 

that the top Sportsman Raffle ticket seller was our own 

Billy Wages. The Escort Unit sold over $17,000 in raffle 

tickets, another fantastic showing for the Unit. 

Parade season is also coming up and I'm sure Capt Tom 

will not be disappointed to see his pre-parade breakfast tab 

go up a bit since we will be seeing more bikes at all the parades. 

Let's show off and have at least eight at every parade 

this year, it's a lot of fun. 

We would also like to welcome to the Unit two new 

members, JD Schwab and Alan Hill. Both were first line 

signed by Larry Smith. Welcome nobles, to the Potentate's 

Escort Unit.

Provost Guard

Lt. Butch Sellers is in charge of redecorating the room 

and is doing a great job. He has set a date of January 1, 

2013 to have these changes complete. There will be times 

that he will need our help and we need to be there to assist. 

He is doing most of the work himself which also includes 

building some new furniture. Wesley has donated some 

cabinets and we all need to be ready to donate our labor. 

Thanks Lt. Sellers for not only taking on this project but 

doing such a fine job. 

Congratulations also goes out to Past Major Jim 

Ketcham for being elected president of the 

SESPGA in New Orleans. He has plans for a great Mid 

Winter which will be hosted by Yaarab Provost Guard and 

he will need our assistance to ensure that all who attend 

have a memorable time in March of 2013. 

We have had some great participation at parades and at 

all the functions this year and Major Ed Turner wanted to 

give big thanks to all of you who attended. When we all do 

a little it means a few doesn't have to do a lot. 

Our annual Christmas party is right around the corner 

and Past Major Bill Morgan and Fran will be contacting you 

about this event. He tells me the cost will be the same as in 

the past, $50.00 a couple or $25.00 for a single. They are 

planning a great event and look forward to seeing everyone 

there. 

If you missed the Potentate Escort Harley Party, you 

missed a great time. We were there in force and all had a 

great time. Lt. Butch Sellers just keeps on giving, seems 

Dianna was sporting a new hat that evening you must ask 

him about this. 

Please keep all of our nobles and their ladies in your 

prayers and especially those who are unable to be with us 

for one reason or another. Lastly, we want to thank our 

ladies as they are always there to assist in everything that 

we do. Normally they're getting things done even before we 

ask it of them and ladies we appreciate you very much. 

We are having a great year and let's finish it the way we 

started it by working hard for Yaarab and the Provost 

Guard and leading by example rather than by words. 

Red Devils

The Red Devils had a blast at the SESCA convention 

in New Orleans. Congratulations to Baha, Opa, and 

Tiny for sweeping the Auguste category. The unit won 3 rd 

place in parade ability while Baha won 2 nd for individual 

parade ability. 

Congratulations are in order as we again won the Uniform 

Competition at the SESPGA in New Orleans. Those 

who stood inspection were Bob Stillman, Alan Vickery, William 

Lovell, Bill Morgan and P.P. Mike Hulsey. Great job 

guys. Bob Stillman headed this effort up and did a great 

job except he had a problem knowing where all the pants

RC won 2 nd place in Tramp with Shoofly winning 3 rd place 

in Whiteface (curses Sparky). Balloons had Baha winning 

1 st in the single category. The unit also won 2 nd place skit. 

If you noticed Baha’s name being mentioned a lot, it is because 

he was on fire that day. He ultimately won the coveted 

Children’s Choice award which included a vote given by 

a young man with special needs. Great job! “Baha” appealed 

to them all! I am also proud to say that our scrapbook, 

which was assembled by our hysterical, I mean historical 

team, led by Opa, Ronnie, Long John and Mary 

LaRue, was picked for the President’s trophy. The convention 

was great and the hospitality shown by members of 

Farhad Grotto was outstanding. A special thanks to Ellis 

“Taz” Savin for running the show for us. 

Parade season is upon us and the Red Devils have recently 

repaired both of our rolling stock. New transmission 

and radiator in the Caboose as well as a new brake job on 

the van will get us to many parades in style. 

Our thoughts and prayers still go out to our sick members 

and spouses such as Dan “Sunflower” Mueller and wife 

Barbara, “Jake” and Barbara Wright, Jerry “Patches” Huffman, 

Joyce Vance, Carolyn Morse and Ken “Diamonds” 

Whigham. We wish them all God’s blessings. 

Our meeting is the 1 st Wednesday of the month at 7:00 

p.m. We continue to extend a cordial invitation to all nobles 

wanting a taste of the clown side of life. Come join us.

Sporting Clays

At the last meeting of Sporting Clays held at the 

Buford Legion Hall, we had the honor of hosting Ed Stanley 

from Georgia Jets. Ed has been kind enough to offer his 

services for the public relations and advertising for the 

2013 shoot in October of 2013. Ed briefed the members on

Summer is over, the hospital drive is on, and we are already 

at work. 

We have several projects for raising money for the hospital. 

We have a reverse drawing set up for October 27 th, and the 

sales are already coming in. We will have 2 steak dinners 

plus drinks and a chance to win one of the prizes and a 

jackpot of $5000.00 for a donation of $100.00. We will 

also have our Boston butt and turkey sale for Thanksgiving, 

and hope, this along with our bucket collection, we will 

have a record amount for the hospital drive this year. 

At our last meeting, we had some very distinguished 

guests, Past Potentate J.D.Mitchell and his lady Linda, 

High Priest and Prophet Larry Cline and his lady Jeri and 

Recorder Danny Huggins and his lady Dona. Our special 

speaker was Dr. Victor Chin, a physician from Rome, who 

how we should set up our benchmarks and on how to establish 

contact with various organizations that would be 

able to help promote Shrine Sporting Clays. Ed also emphasized 

that Georgia Jets were firmly behind the project 

for 2013. Georgia Jets looked at the event as a way of promoting 

Georgia Jets’ relationship with their many charter 

clients by inviting them to participate in the event. At the 

meeting, several motions were passed, one of which was to 

give the Georgia Civil Air Patrol a donation for their project 

in connection with wreath laying at the graves of veterans. 

The final approval was made on the amount that will be 

donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children at the Yaarab 

Hospital Crusade, September 15. 

Mr. Stanly and members of the staff at Georgia Jets have 

been invited to attend our Crusade kickoff. 

There was an animated discussion on the Sportsman’s Raffle 

event. The nobles present were very pleased and proud 

of their efforts in promoting the Raffle. They all are looking 

forward to an even bigger event in 2013. It was the consensus 

of opinion that this project not only helped Yaarab 

Shrine, as well as, bringing a lot of credit and attention to 

our Shrine Center. 

See you all at the Hospital Crusade in September and 

our regular third Thursday of the month meeting. 

It is great to be a noble in such a great organization such 

as “Shrine Sporting Clays for Kids”.

Cherokee Shrine Club

Awards night at the Club was a great success. The following 

nobles received Thousandaire Awards: Carl Popham, 

Mark Popham, Rayburn Hulsey, Sonny Roper, Ronny 

Loner and Ralph Dennis. Ladies Sue Roper and Barbara 

Loner were recognized for their contributions to the Thousandaire 

program. The Thousandaires will be recognized 

again at the Bay Breeze Restaurant in Marietta on September 

27. 

Welcome Aboard to Nobles David Ergle and Greg Hendrix. 

Those on the sick list include: Frankie Freeman and Jim 

Hunter. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. 

Birthdays in October include: James Blalock, Carl Popham, 

James Drane and President Neal Warren. November 

birthdays include: Herman Cantrell and Earl Darby. 

Shriner of the Year award went to a very deserving noble, 

Past President Sonny Roper. All of the members were 

well aware of his accomplishments for Cherokee Shrine 

club and Yaarab Shrine Center. President Neal Warren 

made a very touching speech and inspired the membership 

to work harder in the coming year. 

The membership enjoyed a night of fun and fellowship 

with a spaghetti supper and fun Bingo on September 14. 

The Cher- O- Kettes went all out to make this a success. 

The Third Annual Poker run to benefit the Shriners Hospital 

and the Club was held on September 22. There was a 

large turnout. 

Cumming Shrine Club

Hope everyone has had a great summer and is doing 

well. Please remember the Hospital Kickoff is Sept. 15th at 

Yaarab Shrine Center at 5:00 p.m., hope to see a good turnout 

for this very important event. We all know without our 

dedication and hard work, the children are the ones that 

will suffer. 

Last article we announced a contest between our men 

and ladies club, our raffle was very successful. Together 

our men and women raised $1033.00 for the Hospital 

Fund. Thanks for all the hard work by all our members. 

The ladies won the contest outselling the men by 50 tickets, 

so the women earned a steak dinner and the nobles get a 

hotdog dinner. CONGRATS LADIES!!! 

MAKE A NOTE OUR ANNUAL FISHING TOURNA- 

MENT IS SEPT. 29, 2012. Please join us. The proceeds 

from this event go to help our hospitals. You can visit our

The Fishing Tournament will take place at Little Hall 

Park, safe light until 3:00 p.m., plenty of prizes, free t-

We are also looking forward to our Panama City Outing

their rides to join in the parade on the 6th. We always have 

a really good time and also get to visit the Shaddai Shrine 


Center on Friday night, Oct. 5, 2012, for a lot of good food 

and entertainment. 

The Cumming Shrine Club meets every 4th Tuesday at 

The Ridge in Cumming,Ga, 6:00 p.m. for social time, 6:30 

p.m. dinner and 7:30 p.m. meeting. Any nobles needing a 

home, please come join us!!

Fayette Shrine Club

The Fayette Shrine Club has really been busy this 

year with parades, the circus, the summer ceremonial, and 

now turning our attention to the Hospital Fund drive as the 

next big event. The hard work of the nobles has been rewarding. 

Fayette Shrine Club was No. 1 in the Sportsman’s 

Raffle Ticket sales for the Circus. We had 43 members participating 

in the sale of tickets. Noble Lindsay Howard was 

No. 1 with collections and sales of $12,864.00, and once 

again Walt Swafford raised over $10,000.00 for the Circus. 

Additionally, we had 3 Gold Executive Aides, 4 Personal 

Aides and a total of 23 Thousandaires. Good work nobles. 

The Potentate selected Walt Swafford as Class Honoree 

for the Summer Ceremonial 2012 in Hiawassee. Walt has 

achieved the highest award level in YAARAB Shrine by 

achieving the position of Platinum Executive Aide for twenty 

(20) consecutive years. Walt has raised in excess of 

$10,000.00 for both the Circus and Hospital for each of 

these years. Walt is in the top five fund raisers in YAARAB 

Shrine and is a fine example all nobles should try to follow. 

We held our Veterans Appreciation dinner at the August 

meeting where former members of the armed forces, Air 

Force, Army, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard were recognized. 

Also in attendance were Illustrious Sir, Potentate 

Chuck Rager and Barry Hulsey, Treasurer. Our guest 

speaker was Ms. Debbie Dryden currently with Home 

Health Care who spent twenty years as a Pediatric Nurse 

and saw many cases of burned and crippled children. She 

spoke of how the Shriners would always be there when a 

new child came to the hospital and they provided everything 

for the child and family. She emphasized her respect 

for the Shriners and their work. She stressed that the one 

and most important thing that Shriners always provided for 

the child and family was HOPE. This is what Shriners 

stand for! 

FSC will be hosting our annual 10-K Dinner Giveaway on 

October 13th and someone could walk away with 

$10,000.00 at the end of the evening. There will be several 

other prizes to be given away during the evening. The dinner 

will consist of a filet minion steak, salad, baked potato 

and drink. The social starts at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00 

p.m., dancing and drawing begins at 8:00 p.m. Call any of

FSC will hold the annual Chili Cook Off on the Square in 

Fayetteville, GA on Oct. 20 th . This is a fun event with some 

of the “Worlds’ Best Chili” cooking anywhere. If you have a 

good Chili Recipe bring it on. To sign up, contact John Law 

at 404-414-6379 for an entry form. We have a “Blue Ribbon” 

panel of judges to select the best Chili. There will be a 

Salsa contest too. Awards will be given for first, second and 

third places. 

On December 1, we will participate in the sanctioned 

Fayetteville Christmas Parade. We would like everyone to 

join us in the parade. Later in the evening, FSC will hold 

our Christmas Social and Dinner at the club’s facility. 

Thanks to Ken Bobbitt for getting the new garage building 

erected for the parade vehicles, and to Jerry Svac for his 

work in getting the building operational. Additional thanks 

to everyone that worked on this project. We now have a 

safe and secure facility to store and work on the club’s vehicles. 

The Fayette Shrine Club meets on the third Monday of 

each Month. We encourage all members to attend and we 

welcome visiting nobles and their ladies. Our social hour 

begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m. 

Please keep all nobles and their families that are ill in 

your thoughts and prayers wishing them a speedy recovery. 

Northeast Dekalb Club

Happy October birthday greetings are extended to 

Garland Phelps (16) and Zak Byrne (28). Happy October 

anniversary greetings are extended to L.C. and Bobbie Orr 

(9), and John and Shirley Dacus (8). Happy November anniversary 

greetings are extended to Gordon and Janice Fox 

(15). 

At the time of this writing, final preparations were being 

made for the sixth annual Northeast Dekalb Club golf tournament 

being held Monday, October 8, 2012. 

Please make your plans to attend the Panama City Beach 

trip (Oct. 4-7), and the Potentate’s Halloween Party (Oct. 

27). Then in November, the Christmas Tree Lighting 

(Nov.17). 

Northeast Dekalb nobles, please mark your calendars to 

attend the December meeting, to be held on Tues. December 

4, as this will be our annual election of officers. At the 

same time, please mark your calendars for Saturday, January 

5, 2013 for the annual Yaarab Business Meeting and 

Annual Shrine election. It will be held in the Gene Bracewell 

Activities Building at the Yaarab Shrine Center, starting 

at 9:30 a.m. The Northeast Dekalb club room will be 

open and all visitors are welcome to stop by for some great 

fellowship. 

Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy 

If you’ve been to the Shriners Hospitals for Children — 

Greenville’s KidZone, there’s no doubt you’ve met their long 

term patients Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. Since 1998, 

the six-foot tall pair has been seated in the KidZone waiting 

to play with any patients who come their way. Raggedy Ann 

and Andy were handmade and donated by Janice Fox (wife 

of NE Dekalb club president Gordon Fox) in honor of her 

great niece, Ansley Powell. Ansley had cerebral palsy 

among other health issues but was never a patient at this 

hospital. Following Ansley’s passing earlier this year, Janice 

wanted to make another donation to the hospital. This 

time, she made mini-sized Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls.

Greenville, stop by the KidZone to see the new dolls sitting 

right next to the originals.

Paulding County Shrine Club

South Fulton Giveaway Winner 

There are lots of things going on with Paulding County. 

On September 28 and 29 we will be helping our ladies 

with their yard sale and on the 29th we will be selling 

breakfast plates. 

On October 6 we will be taking our beautiful ladies out to 

eat for our annual Ladies Night Out. It is time to get out 

and collect for our Hospitals. We, as nobles, need to do 

everything possible to support the Hospitals. Our kids are 

our purpose for being a Shriner. We all need to be out on 

the street or at a store front collecting. We pledged 

$10,000 and turned in over $6,000 so far. 

It was such a Blessing to be at the Hospital Kickoff. The 

Divan did a wonderful job on the program. 

When you are on bended knee please remember all of our 

kids that receive treatment at our Hospitals through the 

generosity of all the donations. Also remember our troops.

Tri-County Shrine Club

Summer is coming to an end and we are getting 

ready for the fall and the Hospital Kickoff. 

Some of our members attended the Southeastern Convention 

in New Orleans and had a great time. 

The Sportsman Raffle was a real success. Jesse Renfroe, 

our secretary, won a pistol. Also, our club sold several winning 

tickets. 

Tri-County is having a hospital fund raiser by putting on 

a poker run November 3rd. All vehicles are welcome to

We have had several members with illnesses in their 

families, please keep the following in your prayers: Arthur

hospital fund-raiser. Registration is at 9 a.m. at Cycle 

World on 29 Hwy in Athens, Ga. All vehicles are welcome. 

The cost is $ 15.00. It will start at Cycle World and end at 

Jeffrey’s Sports Grill in Braselton. There will be door prizes, 

50-50 chance tickets, and live music. For more information

Tucker Shrine Club

Nobles, by the time you read this item, our next meeting 

(November) will be our election night for 2013 officers. 

Once again we will welcome a new president and his line 

officers, and once again we will have a new set of plans on 

our trestle board, plans that we hope will guide us through 

another very successful year. 

We will begin this coming year much better off financially 

than we were this year. Our success this year is due in 

large part to the efforts of our Divan Officers and their selected 

staff, who provided additional avenues for clubs and 

units to earn funds. But the bottom line is always the 

same , It is The Spokes that make the Wheels work. (We is 

What We is, Cause You is What You is ), and as long as we 

work together as a Team we can reach our loftiest goals. 

We can never praise enough, our ladies of Tu-Sh-La, always 

standing beside us, whatever the cause might be, they 

bring sunshine on cloudy days, and are so like beautiful 

flowers in a field of weeds. 

Kudos to Past President John Robert Smith, Past Commander 

of Yaarab L.O.H. and now serving as 3 rd Lieutenant 

Commander in S.E.S.A. also serving as a Chief of Staff in 

the 8 th Division of the International L.O.H. Folks I know 

that my spending a few nights at Salvation Army Halls, 

back during my homeless days doesn’t really qualify me to 

speak military talk about this, so if any of this is in error 

you can Court-martial John Robert. 

Nobles, the Basharat is a wonderful way to communicate, 

and to recognize those among us who work above and 

beyond the call of duty. I know there are many of our club 

members, who like J Rob, are very active in military related 

programs. Bill Glenn, Jack Wade, and Past President Rick 

Conn who serves the Grand Lodge programs for Veterans, 

just to name a few. There are so many interesting stories to 

share. So toot your own horn. Keep the item short, send 

them, and lets go to press. 



Top event this month, Noble Harry Thomas celebrated his 

Eightieth birthday, both sons Jim and Jerry were there, 

someone asked which one of them was Harry’s father ,I replied 

the tall one I think. 

News from Yaarab’s Ladies Auxiliaries 

Cedar Valley Shrinettes

What a beautiful week this has been, fall is everywhere, 

thank GOD for the four seasons we have in Georgia. 

We have had a bountiful year in fund raising projects and 

fellowship working for Shriners Hospitals For Children. 

We are still busy doing money projects for our club and our 

nobles Shrine Club. Our club would like to thank President 

Scooter Stephens and his officers, and President Diane Tracy 

and her officers for all the wonderful support they have 

shown to each member this year. 

Everyone, I am sure, had a good time at the S.E. Shrine 

Convention in New Orleans, also the Fun Fall Outing in 

Panama City Beach, Florida. 

We as a club was honored to have special guests this 

year to mention a few, Past Potentate J D Mitchell and lady 

Linda, High Priest and Prophet Larry Cline and Lady Jeri, 

Recorder Danny Huggins and Lady Dona. Our club welcomes 

all clubs to come and visit and enjoy the food and 

fellowship on the 4 th Thursday of each month. 

Hope everyone enjoys the up coming holidays and not to 

forget the true meaning of the season of special holidays. 

We as a club, can count our many, many blessing we have 

and support those who need us for whatever reason. 

I am proud of our ladies. We got new shrinette shirts, 

and girls they sure look good on all of you. 

Sorry to report, we have a lot of sadness and sickness in 

our club and we need all the prayers and concerns that we 

can extend to each Shrine Family. 

Let me say again, I am proud to be the Reporter for the 

Cedar Valley Shrinettes. I take it as an honor to write for 

our club, and I personally thank Sam Black for all the good 

news he puts in our Basharat each issue. He is wonderful to 

report to, and I hope he will be Editor for years to come. 

Let’s all put our heads together and send all of our collections 

to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, as the children 

are in need of our help. 

GOD continue to be with our military and families. We 

have all been touched by the Middle East wars, by a love 

one or friend injured or killed, I know I have. We honor 

them everyday by the freedom we enjoy. 

Be kind, be good, and enjoy what we have.

in the Saturday morning parade it didn’t bother Yaarab’s 

Divan. 

Several Cher-O-Kettes are looking forward to the Panama 

City Beach outing coming up the first week in October. 

Cher-O-Kettes are once again taking advantage of the 

Belk Charity Sale event to raise some funds for their club. 

The $5.00 off coupons can be purchased from most any 

active Cher-O-Kette. The charity sale is being held on November 

3. 

During the recent Hospital Kickoff, the Cher-O-Kettes 

turned in a $1000.00 donation for the Shriners Hospitals 

for Children. The majority of the funds for the donation 

came from the fall Belk Charity Sale that the Cher-O-Kettes 

participated in.

Lynne Rollins (24), Audrey Turner (3), and Brenda Waters

Conyettes

The summer has gone by quickly. Our members have 

enjoyed trips to Hiawassee, New Orleans, and the Potentate's 

Cruise. We also had an outing at Hooters as a thank 

you to the men in our club who were thousandaires. 

Thanks too, for all who worked or recruited workers for 

the Nascar race. Our club raised money for the Hospital 

drive. As I write this, I have just returned from attending 

the hospital kickoff at the Shrine Center. What a wonderful 

motivational evening. I hope we all keep in mind, as we 

approach fall, the purpose of raising money to help the 

Shriners Hospitals for Children. Ladies remember to help 

support and encourage each Shriner to work for the hospital. 

We continue to miss seeing Nita Gresham at our meetings. 

Our wishes are you will gain your strength back from 

your chemo treatments and be back with us soon. We miss 

you.

time on the SESA trip and traveling by Amtrak. Anyone

I hope this finds everyone doing well. HOORAY LA- 

DIES!!! we won our raffle contest against our nobles, winning 

a steak dinner. The men and women raised $1,033.00 

for the Hospital Kickoff. 

Our club is growing in membership, we thank all our 

new members and welcome any ladies to join us for a meeting!! 

We have our ANNUAL PANCAKE SUPPER coming up 

Oct. 9th at the McDONALD's off exit 14 in Cumming,Ga., 

please come out for some fun and fellowship. Tickets are 

$3.00 per plate for all the pancakes you can eat. For more

Ladies let’s all join our men for the Panama City Outing, 

if you've never been before you will definitely have a lot of

El Tehran Temple No. 122

It's time to pick the pumpkins from the vine, carve them 

up, and make them shine! Halloween and Thanksgiving 

are just around the corner and the larders need to be filled 

with all the special delights. Queen Mary announced she 

can help fill those larders with the Pastry Sales like we had 

last year. She will be taking orders in November for delivery 

in December. They were lip-smacking good, as best I 

can remember. 

Our September Session was chocked full of news from 

Supreme and accolades from Supreme Queen Susie for how 

well you all did during her Official Visit in July. You are all 

to be congratulated for all of your hard work. Our Working 

Fellowship Group is to be congratulated as they came in #1 

in toys, games, school supplies, disposable cameras, gift 

cards & crafts to the hospitals in the Working Fellowship 

Group, collected from the Ladies of the Household. They 

were No. 3 in the pillow donations and #5 in all items and 

cash ($31,000 FY 2011). 

Queen Mary Moon has asked that we all plan to attend 

the October 10th Stated Session for Founder's Day and 

Cancer Awareness. She has asked that all of the Past 

Queens wear dresses in the color of their year. She would 

also like for all of us to honor any of our relatives or ourselves 

who have suffered with cancer or passed away. We 

can do this by wearing a pin or something to signify Cancer 

Awareness. 

November 10th & 11th will be our Annual Fall Festival at 

Jim Miller Park, located at 2245 Calloway Road in Marietta, 

Ga. The times are Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.in Building A. 

There will also be A Recycle event and an AKC Dog Agility 


Event going on in the park at the same time. We hope to 

have 100 or more vendors showing their wares, according 

to Princess Royale, Jackie Patton. If you know of anyone 

who might like to participate, please give Princess Jackie a 

call, at 678-591-9851, so she can get an application to them. 

We will also be drawing for that adorable Mercedes Benz 

that we have been selling tickets for all spring and summer. 

Ticket Donations are $5 per ticket or 5 for $20. You sure 

don't want to miss that!!! The November 14th Stated Session 

will have the drawing for the $500 Kroger Gift Card 

Giveaway, so don't forget to stock up on Kroger Gift Cards 

at the October Session. 

Queen Mary has announced a Ceremonial to be held on 

November 18th at 2:00 p.m. at Chamblee-Sardis Lodge. 

There will not be a luncheon served prior to the Ceremonial; 

however we will have coffee and desserts after the Ceremonial. 

Ladies, Daughters of the Nile is an important and very 

special group. We have worked together through good 

times and bad and continued to meet our goals in donations 

to the Shrine Hospitals. It is our close and loving 

membership that makes our Shrine Center the special place 

it is. We need all of our members in attendance to keep the 

momentum going. If you need assistance in participating 

in Sessions or special events, please call a member of the 

Ambassadors and they will assist you in finding a ride to 

and from the event. As you walk through your daily lives 

remember the warmth of the Fall season, the leaves turning 

their majestic colors and lighting up our lives and the 

warmth of the fire in the fireplace to warm your toes, your 

nose and your hearts, along with the wonderful aromas 

flowing from the kitchen to warm your soul. Have a 

Happy Halloween and a Blessed and Peaceful Thanksgiving. 

The Derringers

The Derringers took a few months off, but are back to a 

normal schedule now. Our men are out collecting and raising 

money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We are 

looking forward to the Hospital Kickoff. 

We have adopted Gentle Interventions as a charitable 

organization we are going to help this holiday season. Gentle 

Interventions has a Thanksgiving dinner for the families 

they help each year several weeks before Thanksgiving. We 

will buy food for the families to prepare for their Thanksgiving 

meal at their home. Some of our members will help 

at the Thanksgiving dinner cooking and serving the food. It 

is a fun day for the families and heartwarming for the volunteers. 

Hope everyone has had a great summer, but I think we 

are all looking forward to some cooler weather and the fall 

season. Stay safe and healthy.


Gwinn-etts

First let me thank everyone for their prayers for Jackson 

Noland. His open heart surgery was a complete success. It 

was amazing to see a small baby acting like nothing happened 

to him the day after a major surgery. He did have to 

return to the hospital with an infection in his incision, but 

other than that it was all smooth sailing. He could be a little 

bit spoiled now though. 

Gwinnett was well represented at the Southeastern in 

New Orleans. The train ride was fabulous and very entertaining. 

Who knew you could do the electric slide on a 

moving train and especially that the train conductor would 

join in the fun. The ride home was a little quieter, but the 

pillow fight at the end was very amusing. Bourbon Street 

was great. We all loved the bands and specialty drinks. The 

New Orleans Steamboat ride was nice and informative. 

The red dress parade was a site to behold. I don’t think I 

have ever seen so many red dresses. 

Although our July birthday ladies were not able to attend 

we still celebrated their birthday at Coastal Breeze. In 

August we celebrated at the Movie Tavern. The movie was 

Hope Springs. The movie and food both were fabulous. 

We topped of the night with Pina Colada cake for Bonita 

and Mary’s birthdays. 

We have a large group going to Panama City Beach. 

Some are going to make a week vacation out of it. It is always 

a great relaxed trip and I am sure this year will be the 

same. I can already taste the shrimp. 

The Fun Fest will be on Oct 13 th this year from 10 a.m. to 

4 p.m. in Dacula. It will be a day of fun for children as well 

as adults. It is also fun to see the kids having a great time. 

The Red Solo Cup Party was loads of fun, but a damper 

was put on it when Keith Newbern wasn’t feeling well, and 

had to go home. About a week later he had to have emergency 

gall bladder surgery. I guess that explains him not 

feeling well. We have all missed Keith and Bonita at our 

events and wish him a speedy recovery. 

Many of our members are already planning for the Halloween 

party at Yaarab. They are really being creative with 

their costumes. 

We have several members that have had illnesses and 

injuries…please pray for them all. 

Karinat’s

The Karinat’s took a break during the summer so it was 

great to see everyone in September. During the break, several 

attended the Southeastern Shrine Association in New 

Orleans with our Arab Guardsmen. Some of us rode the 

train and had a great time. An 11 hour train ride forces you 

to have fun! Even though it literally rained on our parade, 

our spirits were not dampened and Bourbon Street will 

never be the same! 

Within two weeks or so of New Orleans, Potentate Chuck 


Rager and Lady Pat were on the Carnival cruise ship along 

with Betsy Briamonte and her friend Evelyn Horgan. We 

went to four ports and had a wonderful time on shore and 

on the ship. Isaac, thankfully, went west and we went 

southeast. Like the comedian said, “ If you were drunk, you 

walked straight, and if you were sober, you looked drunk”. 

None of us got seasick, just had a good time and made 

some new friends. We learned a couple of new dances as 

well. 

The Hospital Crusade Kickoff was great and well attended. 

Who can go away from any kickoff with a dry eye! The 

kids are truly an inspiration to us all. It swells your heart to 

see what the Shrine organization can and does do for so 

many. 

Some of the Arab Guard went to Panama City in October 

and good time was had by all of the Guard and Karinat’s. 

The hotel we stayed in was very nice. 

A Halloween party is goulish and spooky and the one in 

the ballroom is expected to be just that. How can you NOT 

have a good time at a Halloween party with the costumes 

and great music to dance to. 

Our Annual Party is November 3. We’re looking forward 

to a wonderful time celebrating Gene Baker’s year. It is 

always nice to share good food and fellowship. 

Let’s not forget the blessings we have and have a safe 

and Happy Thanksgiving.

LOH-ettes

Apologies to the LOH-ettes for my being out of town on 

a meeting night. The most recent absence we went to Oklahoma 

City for an FAA reunion. However, Leng Conn has 

kept me up to date about some of our outings. I have managed 

to attend most of the parades, as they are so much 

fun. 

The first visit was to the Social at Albany, GA, June 21 

and 22. Several of our members who went reported they 

had a good time. Second visit was the Military Ball at El 

Hasa Temple in Ashland, KY July 19, 20,and 21. These 

people really rolled out the red carpet for everyone. All had 

a great time and the food and hospitality were fabulous. 

Among those who went from our Shrine Center were Jack 

and Barbara Smith, Tom and Martha Fluent, J. D. and Judy 

Henson, Bill and Shirley Glenn, John Robert and 

Anita Smith, and Rick and Leng Conn. 

Most importantly during the SESA in New Orleans our 

Thom Fluent went in as Commander of the LOH SESA, 

thereby relieving Bill Wagner from this position. John Robert 

ran and was elected for 3rd Lieutenant Commander.

Paulding County Shrine Ladies

Thank you to the ladies who were able to help with our 

annual Miss Hiram Pageant. Paula Beavers and Lisa Hicks 

greatly appreciate your help. 

We would like to thank our guys for their help at our 

Yard Sale and cooking breakfast. 

We will have a fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse in Hiram 

on October 11, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

On October 27 we will be giving out candy at Trick or 

Treat Village and need donations of candy. This is a huge 

event in Paulding County at Paulding Meadows Park. It's 

so much fun seeing all the happy faces of the kids! 

We are still collecting new toys and books for the kids at 

our Hospitals. Please bring any of these items to the clubhouse 

and leave them in the ladies meeting room. 

The ones that went to the Hospital Kickoff had a great 

time. The program was wonderful and so was the food! 

Please keep Murial Rainey, Doris Lance and Ginny Boulton 

in your Prayers. 

Deal got to hold the baby gator. It was nice to have Billy 

and Jean Deal of Paulding Shrine Club join in on the 

swamp fun. 

We are back to work at the Roller Girls. There are only 

two dates left, September 22 and October 20 th . If you haven’t 

made it out to see you need to come check it out. 

We are looking forward to Panama City in October, no 

telling what kind of adventures we will have. I am sure it 

will be fun. Safe travels to everyone and Happy Halloween.

South Fulton Shrinettes

Hope everyone had a great time at the South Fulton Annual 

Harley giveaway. Congratulations to Potentate Chuck 

Rager and Lady Pat on winning the Harley. Hope they 

have save travels with it. 

We all had a good time in New Orleans; it was a pleasure 

sharing my hometown with our friends. The weather was 

not entirely cooperative but that happens. It is 90 degrees 

one minute and raining the next. That is why the mosquito 

is the state bird !! A large group from South Fulton got up 

close and personal with the animals in the swamp. It was a 

BIG shock to have a baby alligator put on my neck (not 

something to try at home). Several of the ladies and Billy

New Orleans is now past and was enjoyed by most. All 

were kept busy. 

Thanks much to our guys in Tucker Club for welcoming 

us ladies back for our September meeting in such a special 

way! Food and socializing was enjoyed by all in the Shrine 

Center Ballroom. 

Come to the October meeting as we will have fun making 

Christmas decorations. Election of Officers will be held at 

our November meeting.

FL trip. 

Be sure to put on your Calendar our Club’s Christmas 

Events. Tu-Sh-La Christmas Luncheon will be at the 

Shrine Center on December 1 st at ll:30 a.m. The Tucker

presented him with his new wheelchair carrier Thursday evening. This means he will not have to ride the bus anymore. 

His mother said he did not like the bus. John’s grandfather was John W. Pelter he was a member of Sweetwater years 

ago, Mr. Pelter passed away several years ago. John has Muscular dystrophy.

9th Annual Yaarab’s Car Show—Huge Success

The 9 th Annual Yaarab Shrine Car Show was held Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18 at Jim Miller Park in Marietta. 

This was the first year that Yaarab’s Clubs and Units had the greatest participation. A special “THANKS” is extended 

to ALL nobles, families, and the general public for showing up and making it possible. Through everyone’s efforts, Yaarab 

raised a total of $ 10,400.00 net profit for the event, of which 100% will go to Shriners Hospitals For Children. Thanks 

again, for everyone’s support, especially Yaarab’s nobility. You came through again, as you always do.

1. All petitions MUST be submitted to the Yaarab Shrine Business Office by 

12:00 P.M. on the day of the meeting. 

2. A current copy of the applicant’s Masonic blue lodge card must be attached 

to the petition when it is SUBMITTED BY THE CANDIDATE. 

3. All petitions MUST be complete and accurately filled out. 

4. Correct and full payment of all fees must accompany the petition. 

5. The Business Office WILL NOT accept faxed or e-mailed petitions. 

6. All candidates MUST report to the shrine center by 6:00 P.M. the day of 

the business meeting preceding the ceremonial. 

7. The Oasis Committee will continue to review all petitions and make appro
