POTENTATE’S MESSAGE<br />

“WE ARE FAMILY”<br />

Dear Nobles and Ladies,<br />

If you missed the ride on the train to New Orleans for the Southeastern you missed a fun filled<br />

train ride. A great time was had by all, even the train Conductor.<br />

We just completed a very successful and rewarding Hospital Crusade Kickoff. There were two<br />

Shriners Hospitals For Children Ambassadors in attendance: Shay Eskew, as an adult product of<br />

our hospital system and fourteen year old Jeremy Gabriel, who is still in the Shriners Hospitals<br />

For Children. Shay was severely burned when he was eight years old, and after over twenty surgeries<br />

in Shriners Hospitals For Children, he is now 38 and married with 4 children. He did not<br />

let the unfortunate accident he endured hold him back. In October, he will compete in the Iron<br />

Man Competition in Kona, Hawaii, where he will swim 2.5 miles, ride a bike 110 miles and run<br />

26.2 miles all in one day. Jeremy was born with many birth defects, which included facial bone<br />

structure not being developed, his ears only being partially developed and in the wrong place, and his hearing not being<br />

developed. He can now hear and he has a beautiful voice. He sang two songs for us. They both shared their stories<br />

with us, and what great stories they were. Now, let’s all do what we do best, raise money for our hospitals so we can continue<br />

to help children like Jeremy and Shay.<br />

We are off to Panama City October 4 th for our fall outing. We look forward to seeing everyone there and having a<br />

YAARAB good time at the beach.<br />

Next on the calendar, is the 1 st Shriners Hospitals For Children Charity Classic being held at St. Ives Country Club on<br />

October 22. We need the support of all the clubs and units to make this a successful event for our hospitals. The Divan<br />

sponsored Halloween Party will be held October 27 at the Shrine center.<br />

YAARAB Christmas Tree Lighting will be November 17th. Bring your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors<br />

for the start of the Holiday season at Yaarab Shrine.<br />

Yaarab Treasurer Barry Hulsey resigned his position on the Divan at the September 12 business meeting. He had been<br />

on a leave of absence for personal and business reasons, while on that leave he was involved in a serious accident and<br />

decided to permanently leave the Divan.<br />

PP Steve Padgett has been appointed to fill the remainder of the 2012 year as Treasurer of Yaarab Shrine. This was<br />

done to comply with Imperial By-Laws.<br />

NEW SHRINER’S SLOGAN<br />

Please help us spread the word to all of our nobles and their ladies, that our new Shriners’ Slogan is….<br />

“All care at Shriners Hospitals for Children is provided without regard to a patient or family’s ability to pay”<br />

Phrases of “free care” or “care without cost” should no longer be used.<br />

BIRTHDAY DINNER RESERVATIONS<br />

Please remember the change in procedure for the birthday party meal. Starting with the October 2012 Birthday Party,<br />

non-birthday attendees will have to call the business office to make a reservation for a meal to insure that a meal will<br />

be available. This is an attempt to cut waste and help our Chef in knowing how many meals to prepare. With expenses<br />

being what they are, we must do something. We will order a dinner for anyone that contacts us, without a reservation<br />

there is no guarantee.<br />

elected office, a resume consisting of his educational background, his vocational history, and his Masonic and Shrine<br />

record. Except as provided in the prior sentence, the printing, publication, circulating or distribution of resolutions,<br />

letters, telegrams, tickets, email, or other devices, by a unit, club, Noble, or group of Nobles, suggesting recommending,<br />

opposing, or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the temple is prohibited.<br />

CROWN OF HONOR UPDATE<br />

We have updated the noble’s crown of honor awards for the 2012 circus. The updates are now available and can be<br />

received by contacting the business office in person or by phone/email at (404) 872-5818 extensions 222 – Kerry Robbins<br />

(krobbins@yaarabshrine.org) or 226 – Carol Rice (crice@yaarabshrine.org). Please bring your crown of honor<br />

jewel to the business office and we will have it updated for you. If you don’t have a crown of honor jewel, we can get<br />

one for you, as well.<br />

A Prayer of Thanksgiving<br />

Greetings Nobles and Ladies. Hope all is well. The season is<br />

changing and Fall is here. Most everyone I have spoken with seems to<br />

prefer this season over the others. The October and November months<br />

seems to be very busy preparing for Thanksgiving dinners and family gatherings<br />

as well as preparing for Christmas. Yes, Christmas is approaching<br />

very fast. But what ever month or season we prefer we should be thankful<br />

for all.<br />

Do you ever just stop for a moment from our busy schedules and reflect<br />

on all the things we should be thankful for? Often times we take life<br />

for granted, our families, all our spouses do for us, friends, our jobs, and<br />

most of all God. We often times don’t even stop and think about our own<br />

Shrine Center, how well it’s maintained or how the birthday parties are<br />

prepared for the nobility and our ladies. Many want to criticize but don’t<br />

stop and think how much work our Divan does, and the hard workers of<br />

Yaarab Shrine. I thank God daily for all these things including all our nobility<br />

and ladies and ask for all of your safety and protection.<br />

In all of our prayers we should begin with pureness of heart, repentance,<br />

and with thanksgiving. Often times we go to God in Prayer and go<br />

straight to the point, God I want this and give me that, but we fail to give him the thanksgiving He deserves. God never sleeps He<br />

is always watching, listening and protecting us and we can call on him any time any place and anywhere. Mark Twain once said, “<br />

I don’t know of a single foreign product that enters this country untaxed except the answer to prayer”. Whether our children are<br />

in the house, down the street, or around the world, we can communicate with God on their behalf, having confidence that God<br />

sees their bodies, minds and hearts. Prayer, unlike long-distance phone calls, does not cost money. We don’t have to shop for<br />

the best rates. We can just call on Him any time and in this time of technology we need to be using knee-mail.<br />

As you sit down for that Thanksgiving dinner and begin to return thanks, let’s remember the Creator of earth Heaven and<br />

man. Maybe as we pray we should let God know we are here for Him as He is for us.<br />

Maybe a Thanksgiving Prayer as such, God, you are with us and we are also with you. We lift up our hearts Lord. We lift them<br />

up to you. Let us give thanks to you Lord. It is right to give thanks and praise to you. It is right and a joyous thing to lift our<br />

hearts and hands to you, God of Light and Love, in thanksgiving for the gift of grace. Before we knew the unsearchable riches of<br />

your child Jesus, we walked in the shadows and cloud. But now as you reveal radiance to the world, we join the hymn sung in<br />

glory without end. Holy God, Grace Revealed heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is the one who comes in your<br />

name. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Creator God, and blessed is your child Christ the Son. While wise ones brought<br />

Him gold, incense and myrrh, He grew to reveal to countless treasures, revealing the Shining Mystery which is you. Jesus broke<br />

bread and broke open your love for us. He blessed the cup and you poured out mercy for the world. Christ was promised Christ<br />

is born; Christ will dwell among us. Come, Spirit, dwell among us, your sons and daughters are gathered at this Thanksgiving dinner.<br />

Use us to reveal your gifts of love and light for the world. God of the ages, shining among us, we are yours, in Thy Holy<br />

Name, Amen! This prayer is based on scriptures from Isaiah 60:1-6, Ephesians 3: 1-12 and Matthew 2: 1-12. My prayers are with<br />

each of you.<br />

Twenty Five Years Ago<br />

September started Yaarab’s Hospital Crusade Kickoff. The goal was set at $ 275,000. Many of the 10,800 nobles who<br />

did not participate with the circus, were asked to show their support for the cause.<br />

Rome Shrine Club held their annual Football Classic on September 19, between Pepperell and Model High Schools.<br />

The game has a history of 38 years with Rome hosting for the last 13 years. At a dinner meeting, held at Red Lobster Restaurant<br />

within weeks after the game, the restaurant management picked up the entire cost of the banquet for 50 guests<br />

and also purchased a $ 500 ad in the football program, of which went to the Hospital Crusade.<br />

Shrine Hospital patient Christopher Marshall and J.T. Glisson were both diagnosed with severe club feet. They were<br />

told they would never walk again. After two operations, at age 3, and three years in casts, Chris not only learned to walk<br />

again, but became the youngest pilot to fly across the United States at age 10. In 1927, J.T. Glisson, at age five months,<br />

was the first patient at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville with severe club feet. He spent nine years at the Greenville<br />

Hospital. He decided that he would ultimately become a Shriner, an artist, and a Christian father. He attained all of his<br />

goals and even made a recent visit to Yaarab Shrine as a Shrine Ambassador from Morocco Temple. He ultimately led an<br />

expedition to South America for the National Geographic Society.<br />

A Sunday, non-Sectarian Thanksgiving Service (Shrine Sunday – November 22, 1987) was held at Valley Brook Baptist<br />

Church. Yaarab Shrine’s Chaplain, Dr. James C. Bryant, and Basharat Editor, was the pastor of Valley Brook Baptist<br />

Church.<br />

Wedding and Formal World held a Ladies President’s Council Fashion Show on November 7, 1987, honoring First Lady<br />

Shirley Padgett.<br />

Yaarab Temple Oktoberfest ballroom dance was held, Saturday, October 10, 1987 from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. Music was<br />

provided by “The Yea-Rabs”. A “polka contest” was held and a German dinner was served. The Ballroom Dance was held<br />

on November 14. It was designated as a Thanksgiving Harvest Ballroom Dance with music provided by “The Yea-Rabs”.<br />

A Halloween Costume Party was held during the Country Western Dance on October 24, 1987 from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. The<br />

music was provided by “The Blends”. There was another Country Western Dance on November 28, 1987. It was announced<br />

that there would be no dances held in December due to all the Christmas parties held by clubs and units.<br />

Parades were held in Cedartown on October 3, Calhoun and Dalton on October 10, and Doraville followed on November<br />

28.<br />

The 1987 Family Photo Album named “Yaarab Temple Simitar” was delivered to the Temple Office for pick-up starting<br />

the week of 11/2/1987. Extra copies would be available for sale for $ 15.00 each.<br />

Membership Corner<br />

With 2012 half behind us and planning for 2013 already underway, sometimes we get so busy with daily routines that<br />

we neglect to notice things that are not in the forefront of our lives. One of those things is the number of members in<br />

Yaarab Shrine. Sadly, we cannot continue to lose membership at our current rate without it affecting our ability to serve<br />

our great Philanthropy.<br />

For several years, Yaarab has been acutely aware of the membership problem. Your membership team has been trying<br />

to impact the decline through outreach and communication. Although we have not been able to stop the decline in<br />

our numbers, we can only imagine where we would be if nothing had been done. A staggering number of nobles decide<br />

to quit each year. Are we failing them somehow? We probably are. Maybe we should think about that.<br />

We will continue with the programs that we have put in place this year. One major program that we have been unable<br />

to make any progress with is mentoring. This should already be happening, but we have apparently gotten out of this<br />

habit over the years. Our top and second line signers should be taking up this mantle. As the body of active members<br />

has evolved from the men that helped us grow to our peak, to those who are now following in their footsteps, we may<br />

have forgotten one very important duty, education.<br />

When a Master Mason makes the decision to expand his Masonic journey and travel with us on the path that leads<br />

through our Desert, we have a duty and an obligation to teach and prepare him so he is ready for the challenges ahead.<br />

As newly initiated nobles, many don’t know what to do next. Neither did most of us. There is usually at least one man in<br />

each of our beginnings that took us under his wing and taught us how to be a Shriner. He was your mentor, and now<br />

probably one of your best friends, too. He not only showed you what to do and how to do it, but he kept you informed<br />

about what was going on and when to be there. This process does not take very long. Within a year, this noble will have<br />

developed a love for the Shrine and the people in it that will motivate him to not only bring in new members but it will<br />

also sustain him through the pitfalls that come with any organization this size.<br />

Hopefully now you are asking, “What can I do?” In a perfect world we would have a group of active mentors that<br />

would strategically cover all of Yaarab, but we do not have that. That means it is left up to us as individuals. It takes very<br />

little time and a commitment to share your knowledge with a few brothers that already want to be just like you “when<br />

they grow up”. You are already living the life of a Shriner. Why not take someone along with you. Our winter ceremonial<br />

will be coming up soon, and we hope you will attend and help to welcome our new Nobles into our fraternity. You<br />

could make the difference in whether they stay involved or never come back.

help in the redecorating of the Imperial Room……I thank you<br />

from the bottom of my heart!<br />

Work is continuing on with this project but we hope to be finished<br />

soon.<br />

1 st Annual Sportsmen’s Raffle – Tremendous Success<br />

Danny Huggins met David Swift of El Jabel Shrine at the July 2011 Imperial Session. David allowed him to store some<br />

equipment there, while members of the Potentate’s Escort rode their motor cycles through the mountains of Colorado. It<br />

was during this time, that David asked Danny to buy a Sportsman Raffle ticket for $ 20. Danny was immediately interested,<br />

thinking that maybe Yaarab could do the same type raffle. He started asking questions and found out that El Jabel<br />

partnered with the local Bass Pro Shop. He saw the poster and more details of how the raffle worked. He then realized<br />

right away that it would be a great opportunity for Yaarab, especially since Bass Pro Shop was popular in the Atlanta area.<br />

Danny asked his friends that were with him in Denver, about organizing a raffle at Yaarab. They all agreed that it<br />

sounded like it would work for Yaarab. When he got back to Atlanta, he called David Swift to get more details about the<br />

raffle. David referred him to a shriner in Detroit named Mike. He had organized the raffle there for seven years, which<br />

was where Denver got the idea.<br />

So, Danny decided to take the idea to Chuck Rager, Sr., to see if he, as incoming Potentate had any interest. Chuck<br />

asked Danny to get more information and get back to him and the Divan with the idea.<br />

Danny contacted a local Bass Pro Shop, and they were interested in participating in the raffle. Many conversations<br />

with Detroit took place. Danny then took all the information and presented it to Yaarab’s Divan.<br />

The Divan all agreed it would be a good idea to organize a raffle, since it had a proven success record in Detroit and<br />

Denver. In early December 2011, the incoming Potentate to be, Chuck Rager, Sr., gave his permission for Danny to move<br />

forward with the raffle.<br />

In the meantime, Danny had secured excellent experience assistance from Noble Don Malcom. It was both Danny and<br />

Don who, in turn, got the ball rolling for the raffle by creating a ticket, poster, and flyers. In January 2012, at the Circus<br />

kickoff event, Danny and Don launched the “First Annual Sportsman’s Raffle” for the Yaarab Shrine Center in association<br />

with Bass Pro Shop..<br />

The “First Annual Sportmen’s Raffle” took place at the Gene Bracewell Activities Building at Yaarab Shrine Center on<br />

Saturday, July 28, 2012. Large crowds started gathering at 9:00 a.m. to ultimately see the results of the 110 prizes that<br />

would be awarded beginning at noon. Upon arrival, one could see the beginning of a tremendous amount of volunteer<br />

nobles, nicely clad in bright orange “Staff” vests. Special “THANKS” goes to all the nobles who sold a total of over 20,000<br />

raffle tickets that ultimately would prove to be the greatest successful event, so far, in the history of Yaarab Shrine.<br />

Function attendees could see from the smooth parking experience, through the great cooking aromas of hot dogs and<br />

hamburgers, and the door greeters, that they were welcomed and it would prove to be a most enjoyable day. From the<br />

beginning, the Yaarab Culinary Crew was busy cooking, in a continued fog of smoke, for the anticipated crowd. Visitors<br />

were welcomed into the covered patio, by the “Door Welcoming Committee”, who would ultimately direct visitors to all<br />

the venues taking place. Tables were set up for the purchase of additional raffle tickets, 50-50 chance tickets, and plastic<br />

ducks with painted numbers for additional prizes to be given away during the drawing. Large flat screen TVs were strategically<br />

set up all around the patio, which had been covered for the event, so attendees who preferred not to go into the<br />

auditorium, could keep up to date with an outdoor environment.<br />

After a welcome to all speech, given by Illustrious Potentate Chuck Rager, the invocation was given by Yaarab Chaplain<br />

Dennis Bellamy at 11:00 a.m. Lunch was served by Yaarab’s Culinary Crew food brigade. All raffle sales were cut off<br />

at 11:45 a.m., and the ticket drawing started promptly at 12 o’clock noon. Before the ticket pulling started, Raffle Chairman<br />

Danny Huggins and Don Malcom thanked all Yaarab volunteers, and noted that we had three CPAs that would monitor<br />

the total drawing of all the tickets and the computer ran process. All the winning tickets would be posted on the<br />

Yaarab Shrine website immediately as each were pulled. While the tickets were being pulled by different people including<br />

First Lady Pat Rager, Danny’s daughter, Jennifer, and others, the plastic ducks were being intermittently pulled to<br />

see who won door prizes that were provided by Bass Pro Shops. After the 110 winning tickets were pulled and all the<br />

plastic duck prizes were awarded, the 50-50 chance winning ticket was pulled. This concluded a day of great fun, relaxation,<br />

and fellowship for everyone in attendance. The main result that made it worthwhile was the overwhelming support<br />

and participation from a lot of people making the event a tremendous success. Please keep your eye out for the next raffle<br />

to be announced. If you missed the 2012 raffle, trust me, you will NOT want to miss the next one.<br />

Congratulations to now Recorder Danny Huggins for the great job that he, Don Malcom, and a lot of volunteers did in<br />

making everything happen. And, yes, thanks again, to all nobles who sold the tickets, and all the nobles and members of<br />

the public who purchased raffle tickets. The results proved to be a tremendously successful event for our cause.<br />

News from Yaarab Units<br />

Arab Guard<br />

It has been a busy summer for the Arab Guard. We<br />

missed the last Basharat so let's catch up. Hiawassee was a<br />

great success. We all had fun, some played golf, others<br />

went on the poker run on the lake, we also marched in the<br />

parade, and we helped serve the meal at the Luau. Fun was<br />

had by all!! The Old Soldiers Day Parade in Alpharetta was<br />

somewhat interesting. It must have rained two inches in<br />

20 minutes and we looked like we had been swimming fully<br />

clothed, but it was fun just the same, marching and waving<br />

at the very wet crowd who stayed with us. We also participated<br />

in the Sweetwater and Villa Rica parades. Bruce Shanahan<br />

has been asking everyone along the parade routes if<br />

anyone has seen a camel go by. Some folks in Villa Rica did<br />

say they had seen one pass by but it only had one hump and<br />

Bruce's camel has two humps, so we are still searching. It<br />

is always a pleasure and honor to escort the Divan in the<br />

parades. We encourage all of the Arab Guard to participate<br />

as often as possible in these fun events.<br />

This brings us to New Orleans and the S.E. Regional.<br />

The train ride down was a great time. Many of us truly enjoyed<br />

the streets of New Orleans and the great food and<br />

hospitality we found while there. Once again, we were<br />

dressed out and ready to parade but a lightning storm and<br />

heavy rain prevented our marching (see picture). We had a<br />

great trip just the same.<br />

As always, we at the Arab Guard invite any of the nobility<br />

and their ladies to join us on the first Friday of every<br />

month for our meeting. Hospitality begins at 6:30 p.m.<br />

with dinner around 7:00 p.m., followed by our monthly<br />

meeting. We usually have a pretty good variety of homemade<br />

dishes which we would be glad to share with you.<br />

Stop in a get to know us!!<br />

nothing like trying to turn around downtown on a dead end<br />

road. From what was translated, the train riders had a similar<br />

problem. How much liquor was on that ride? The<br />

Moose was on the loose while in New Orleans. Thank you<br />

for carrying on the traditions of the Staff being the standard<br />

that others look to.<br />

The Southeastern was a great success in Charlotte. As<br />

usual, crowds loved the vehicles and paradability of Yaarab<br />

Temple’s number one unit. From what was told, some race<br />

parts are missing from quite a few of the race teams that<br />

were visited. This is real dedication of the members to keep<br />

our vehicles in top shape.<br />

The parade season this year keeps coming up on days<br />

that decide to rain. Unfortunately, this causes a safety issue<br />

for the reloading of the top vehicles on the carry-all.<br />

MF and his great leader, are currently acquiring the parts<br />

necessary to mount a winch to pull these vehicles up the<br />

ramps in a safer manner than, wide open and hope we do<br />

not slide off.<br />

The hospital kickoff was informative with some new ideas<br />

to help raise money for our philanthropy. The Director<br />

has made a pledge of $30,000, { yes, thirty thousand dollars}.<br />

If everyone will get out and work hard, this should be<br />

an obtainable goal.<br />

Everyone is encouraged to attend the December Ceremonial<br />

Class. Emo is going to have some new gags for everyone’s<br />

entertainment. Support is needed in order for us to<br />

get back to initiating candidates, like in old times, and not<br />

indoctrinating them into the Shrine.<br />

Please remember our sick when on bended knee, and<br />

remember our soldiers, their families, and all of our first<br />

responders. The Holiday season is coming up quick so, let’s<br />

all say an extra prayer for those in need.<br />

Entertainers Unit<br />

The Staff has been very busy the last couple of months!<br />

The parade season is in full swing. We have logged many<br />

miles behind the wheel and even taken a train ride to reach<br />

the audiences looking for a great parade. If you have not<br />

been on any of these trips you have definitely missed some<br />

great adventures.<br />

In the land of Voo Doo and black magic RC was unable<br />

to convince the valet to park the carry all. Rand McNally<br />

brought us right to the front door of the hotel, however<br />

there is not an “ app” for driving a tractor trailer. There’s<br />

I woke up the other morning to a much cooler temperature.<br />

Does this mean we are about to experience some<br />

cooler weather for a while? Well, I know you will receive all<br />

the news of the Shrine Center from the past few months<br />

and also what is about to happen in the near future. So, if<br />

it’s alright, I would like to give you something to read that<br />

is not all shrine news.<br />

I have found as I get older, on cooler mornings, I have<br />

more aches and pains. Now some of you, who are my<br />

friends, are older than me and you did not pass that information<br />

along to me. I need that information to prepare for<br />

the future. However, I do like the cooler weather and look<br />

forward to some more of it. I love the cool crisp mornings.<br />

Some of us, the Entertainers, have been doing a little<br />

traveling. I went to the mountains for a few days, Ronnie<br />

went to Florida, Jug went to Tennessee, and several of us<br />

went to New Orleans. It’s nice to get away for a few days<br />

now and then. Have you ever stopped to give any thought<br />

to why when travelling, you carry so much stuff with you to<br />

remind you of home. All the things you want to get away<br />

from you end up carrying with you. How did we get along<br />

without a telephone that can do everything but cook your<br />

dinner?<br />

We use to carry a laptop but we don’t need that anymore<br />

because we have a phone that will do the same thing. We<br />

went out for dinner the other night and instead of talking to<br />

each other we both were checking our phone for messages<br />

and e-mails while we waited for our meal. More about that<br />

at a later time.<br />

I would like you to please keep our Brother and Noble<br />

James Childers and his family in your prayer. I’m sure he<br />

and Shirley would appreciate it.<br />

Potentate’s Escort<br />

Boy oh boy, did we get an unexpected surprise at<br />

Southeastern this year! With only 3 weeks to practice, and<br />

with 2 new riders (Gary Lewis, Billy Wages) for the Drill<br />

Team, they managed to put together a new drill routine,<br />

configured by Recorder Danny Huggins. They brought<br />

home a 2nd Place trophy out of seven competing teams.<br />

Great job guys.<br />

Also, just completed was our Annual Last One Out Rides<br />

Harley Davidson giveaway with over 550 people showing<br />

up for the event. We sold out early and even had some people<br />

show up trying to get tickets that couldn't get them. We<br />

still got them in for some dinner and fun for a reasonable<br />

donation. It was a great evening and everyone pitched in to<br />

help so things went smoothly. Thanks to all. The Escortettes<br />

also had a great evening, setting a record on their<br />

fundraisers, topping the $4,000 mark for the first time ever.<br />

Panama City is coming up soon so let's go down and<br />

have a good time for all the hard work we put in this year.<br />

Recorder Danny Huggins informed us at our last meeting<br />

that the top Sportsman Raffle ticket seller was our own<br />

Billy Wages. The Escort Unit sold over $17,000 in raffle<br />

tickets, another fantastic showing for the Unit.<br />

Parade season is also coming up and I'm sure Capt Tom<br />

will not be disappointed to see his pre-parade breakfast tab<br />

go up a bit since we will be seeing more bikes at all the parades.<br />

Let's show off and have at least eight at every parade<br />

this year, it's a lot of fun.<br />

We would also like to welcome to the Unit two new<br />

members, JD Schwab and Alan Hill. Both were first line<br />

signed by Larry Smith. Welcome nobles, to the Potentate's<br />

Escort Unit.<br />

Provost Guard<br />

Lt. Butch Sellers is in charge of redecorating the room<br />

and is doing a great job. He has set a date of January 1,<br />

2013 to have these changes complete. There will be times<br />

that he will need our help and we need to be there to assist.<br />

He is doing most of the work himself which also includes<br />

building some new furniture. Wesley has donated some<br />

cabinets and we all need to be ready to donate our labor.<br />

Thanks Lt. Sellers for not only taking on this project but<br />

doing such a fine job.<br />

Congratulations also goes out to Past Major Jim<br />

Ketcham for being elected president of the<br />

SESPGA in New Orleans. He has plans for a great Mid<br />

Winter which will be hosted by Yaarab Provost Guard and<br />

he will need our assistance to ensure that all who attend<br />

have a memorable time in March of 2013.<br />

We have had some great participation at parades and at<br />

all the functions this year and Major Ed Turner wanted to<br />

give big thanks to all of you who attended. When we all do<br />

a little it means a few doesn't have to do a lot.<br />

Our annual Christmas party is right around the corner<br />

and Past Major Bill Morgan and Fran will be contacting you<br />

about this event. He tells me the cost will be the same as in<br />

the past, $50.00 a couple or $25.00 for a single. They are<br />

planning a great event and look forward to seeing everyone<br />

there.<br />

If you missed the Potentate Escort Harley Party, you<br />

missed a great time. We were there in force and all had a<br />

great time. Lt. Butch Sellers just keeps on giving, seems<br />

Dianna was sporting a new hat that evening you must ask<br />

him about this.<br />

Please keep all of our nobles and their ladies in your<br />

prayers and especially those who are unable to be with us<br />

for one reason or another. Lastly, we want to thank our<br />

ladies as they are always there to assist in everything that<br />

we do. Normally they're getting things done even before we<br />

ask it of them and ladies we appreciate you very much.<br />

We are having a great year and let's finish it the way we<br />

started it by working hard for Yaarab and the Provost<br />

Guard and leading by example rather than by words.<br />

Red Devils<br />

The Red Devils had a blast at the SESCA convention<br />

in New Orleans. Congratulations to Baha, Opa, and<br />

Tiny for sweeping the Auguste category. The unit won 3 rd<br />

place in parade ability while Baha won 2 nd for individual<br />

parade ability.<br />

Congratulations are in order as we again won the Uniform<br />

Competition at the SESPGA in New Orleans. Those<br />

who stood inspection were Bob Stillman, Alan Vickery, William<br />

Lovell, Bill Morgan and P.P. Mike Hulsey. Great job<br />

guys. Bob Stillman headed this effort up and did a great<br />

job except he had a problem knowing where all the pants<br />

RC won 2 nd place in Tramp with Shoofly winning 3 rd place<br />

in Whiteface (curses Sparky). Balloons had Baha winning<br />

1 st in the single category. The unit also won 2 nd place skit.<br />

If you noticed Baha’s name being mentioned a lot, it is because<br />

he was on fire that day. He ultimately won the coveted<br />

Children’s Choice award which included a vote given by<br />

a young man with special needs. Great job! “Baha” appealed<br />

to them all! I am also proud to say that our scrapbook,<br />

which was assembled by our hysterical, I mean historical<br />

team, led by Opa, Ronnie, Long John and Mary<br />

LaRue, was picked for the President’s trophy. The convention<br />

was great and the hospitality shown by members of<br />

Farhad Grotto was outstanding. A special thanks to Ellis<br />

“Taz” Savin for running the show for us.<br />

Parade season is upon us and the Red Devils have recently<br />

repaired both of our rolling stock. New transmission<br />

and radiator in the Caboose as well as a new brake job on<br />

the van will get us to many parades in style.<br />

Our thoughts and prayers still go out to our sick members<br />

and spouses such as Dan “Sunflower” Mueller and wife<br />

Barbara, “Jake” and Barbara Wright, Jerry “Patches” Huffman,<br />

Joyce Vance, Carolyn Morse and Ken “Diamonds”<br />

Whigham. We wish them all God’s blessings.<br />

Our meeting is the 1 st Wednesday of the month at 7:00<br />

p.m. We continue to extend a cordial invitation to all nobles<br />

Sporting Clays<br />

At the last meeting of Sporting Clays held at the<br />

Buford Legion Hall, we had the honor of hosting Ed Stanley<br />

from Georgia Jets. Ed has been kind enough to offer his<br />

services for the public relations and advertising for the<br />

2013 shoot in October of 2013. Ed briefed the members on<br />

Cedar Valley Shrine Club<br />

Summer is over, the hospital drive is on, and we are already<br />

at work.<br />

We have several projects for raising money for the hospital.<br />

We have a reverse drawing set up for October 27 th, and the<br />

sales are already coming in. We will have 2 steak dinners<br />

plus drinks and a chance to win one of the prizes and a<br />

jackpot of $5000.00 for a donation of $100.00. We will<br />

also have our Boston butt and turkey sale for Thanksgiving,<br />

and hope, this along with our bucket collection, we will<br />

have a record amount for the hospital drive this year.<br />

At our last meeting, we had some very distinguished<br />

guests, Past Potentate J.D.Mitchell and his lady Linda,<br />

High Priest and Prophet Larry Cline and his lady Jeri and<br />

Recorder Danny Huggins and his lady Dona. Our special<br />

speaker was Dr. Victor Chin, a physician from Rome, who<br />

how we should set up our benchmarks and on how to establish<br />

contact with various organizations that would be<br />

able to help promote Shrine Sporting Clays. Ed also emphasized<br />

that Georgia Jets were firmly behind the project<br />

for 2013. Georgia Jets looked at the event as a way of promoting<br />

Georgia Jets’ relationship with their many charter<br />

clients by inviting them to participate in the event. At the<br />

meeting, several motions were passed, one of which was to<br />

give the Georgia Civil Air Patrol a donation for their project<br />

in connection with wreath laying at the graves of veterans.<br />

The final approval was made on the amount that will be<br />

donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children at the Yaarab<br />

Hospital Crusade, September 15.<br />

Mr. Stanly and members of the staff at Georgia Jets have<br />

been invited to attend our Crusade kickoff.<br />

There was an animated discussion on the Sportsman’s Raffle<br />

event. The nobles present were very pleased and proud<br />

of their efforts in promoting the Raffle. They all are looking<br />

forward to an even bigger event in 2013. It was the consensus<br />

of opinion that this project not only helped Yaarab<br />

Shrine, as well as, bringing a lot of credit and attention to<br />

our Shrine Center.<br />

our regular third Thursday of the month meeting.<br />

It is great to be a noble in such a great organization such<br />

as “Shrine Sporting Clays for Kids”.<br />

done at the hospital. He also spoke about the staff working<br />

there, that they were a very caring group concerned about<br />

the patients being treated there.<br />

We lost two of our old members this month and had a<br />

moment of silence for their passing; Nobles Wilburn Brown<br />

and Glenn York, Jr.<br />

Cherokee Shrine Club<br />

Awards night at the Club was a great success. The following<br />

nobles received Thousandaire Awards: Carl Popham,<br />

Mark Popham, Rayburn Hulsey, Sonny Roper, Ronny<br />

Loner and Ralph Dennis. Ladies Sue Roper and Barbara<br />

Loner were recognized for their contributions to the Thousandaire<br />

program. The Thousandaires will be recognized<br />

again at the Bay Breeze Restaurant in Marietta on September<br />

27.<br />

Welcome Aboard to Nobles David Ergle and Greg Hendrix.<br />

Those on the sick list include: Frankie Freeman and Jim<br />

Hunter. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.<br />

Birthdays in October include: James Blalock, Carl Popham,<br />

James Drane and President Neal Warren. November<br />

birthdays include: Herman Cantrell and Earl Darby.<br />

Shriner of the Year award went to a very deserving noble,<br />

Past President Sonny Roper. All of the members were<br />

well aware of his accomplishments for Cherokee Shrine<br />

club and Yaarab Shrine Center. President Neal Warren<br />

made a very touching speech and inspired the membership<br />

to work harder in the coming year.<br />

The membership enjoyed a night of fun and fellowship<br />

with a spaghetti supper and fun Bingo on September 14.<br />

The Cher- O- Kettes went all out to make this a success.<br />

The Third Annual Poker run to benefit the Shriners Hospital<br />

and the Club was held on September 22. There was a<br />

large turnout.<br />

Cumming Shrine Club<br />

Hope everyone has had a great summer and is doing<br />

well. Please remember the Hospital Kickoff is Sept. 15th at<br />

Yaarab Shrine Center at 5:00 p.m., hope to see a good turnout<br />

for this very important event. We all know without our<br />

dedication and hard work, the children are the ones that<br />

will suffer.<br />

Last article we announced a contest between our men<br />

and ladies club, our raffle was very successful. Together<br />

our men and women raised $1033.00 for the Hospital<br />

Fund. Thanks for all the hard work by all our members.<br />

The ladies won the contest outselling the men by 50 tickets,<br />

so the women earned a steak dinner and the nobles get a<br />

hotdog dinner. CONGRATS LADIES!!!<br />

Fayette Shrine Club<br />

The Fayette Shrine Club has really been busy this<br />

year with parades, the circus, the summer ceremonial, and<br />

now turning our attention to the Hospital Fund drive as the<br />

next big event. The hard work of the nobles has been rewarding.<br />

Fayette Shrine Club was No. 1 in the Sportsman’s<br />

Raffle Ticket sales for the Circus. We had 43 members participating<br />

in the sale of tickets. Noble Lindsay Howard was<br />

No. 1 with collections and sales of $12,864.00, and once<br />

again Walt Swafford raised over $10,000.00 for the Circus.<br />

Additionally, we had 3 Gold Executive Aides, 4 Personal<br />

Aides and a total of 23 Thousandaires. Good work nobles.<br />

The Potentate selected Walt Swafford as Class Honoree<br />

for the Summer Ceremonial 2012 in Hiawassee. Walt has<br />

achieved the highest award level in YAARAB Shrine by<br />

achieving the position of Platinum Executive Aide for twenty<br />

(20) consecutive years. Walt has raised in excess of<br />

$10,000.00 for both the Circus and Hospital for each of<br />

these years. Walt is in the top five fund raisers in YAARAB<br />

Shrine and is a fine example all nobles should try to follow.<br />

We held our Veterans Appreciation dinner at the August<br />

meeting where former members of the armed forces, Air<br />

Force, Army, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard were recognized.<br />

Also in attendance were Illustrious Sir, Potentate<br />

Chuck Rager and Barry Hulsey, Treasurer. Our guest<br />

speaker was Ms. Debbie Dryden currently with Home<br />

Health Care who spent twenty years as a Pediatric Nurse<br />

and saw many cases of burned and crippled children. She<br />

spoke of how the Shriners would always be there when a<br />

new child came to the hospital and they provided everything<br />

for the child and family. She emphasized her respect<br />

for the Shriners and their work. She stressed that the one<br />

and most important thing that Shriners always provided for<br />

the child and family was HOPE. This is what Shriners<br />

stand for!<br />

FSC will be hosting our annual 10-K Dinner Giveaway on<br />

October 13th and someone could walk away with<br />

$10,000.00 at the end of the evening. There will be several<br />

other prizes to be given away during the evening. The dinner<br />

will consist of a filet minion steak, salad, baked potato<br />

and drink. The social starts at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00<br />

p.m., dancing and drawing begins at 8:00 p.m. Call any of<br />

FSC will hold the annual Chili Cook Off on the Square in<br />

Fayetteville, GA on Oct. 20 th . This is a fun event with some<br />

of the “Worlds’ Best Chili” cooking anywhere. If you have a<br />

good Chili Recipe bring it on. To sign up, contact John Law<br />

at 404-414-6379 for an entry form. We have a “Blue Ribbon”<br />

panel of judges to select the best Chili. There will be a<br />

Salsa contest too. Awards will be given for first, second and<br />

third places.<br />

On December 1, we will participate in the sanctioned<br />

Fayetteville Christmas Parade. We would like everyone to<br />

join us in the parade. Later in the evening, FSC will hold<br />

our Christmas Social and Dinner at the club’s facility.<br />

Thanks to Ken Bobbitt for getting the new garage building<br />

erected for the parade vehicles, and to Jerry Svac for his<br />

work in getting the building operational. Additional thanks<br />

to everyone that worked on this project. We now have a<br />

safe and secure facility to store and work on the club’s vehicles.<br />

The Fayette Shrine Club meets on the third Monday of<br />

each Month. We encourage all members to attend and we<br />

welcome visiting nobles and their ladies. Our social hour<br />

begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m.<br />

Northeast Dekalb Club<br />

At the time of this writing, final preparations were being<br />

made for the sixth annual Northeast Dekalb Club golf tournament<br />

being held Monday, October 8, 2012.<br />

trip (Oct. 4-7), and the Potentate’s Halloween Party (Oct.<br />

27). Then in November, the Christmas Tree Lighting<br />

(Nov.17).<br />

Northeast Dekalb nobles, please mark your calendars to<br />

4, as this will be our annual election of officers. At the<br />

same time, please mark your calendars for Saturday, January<br />

5, 2013 for the annual Yaarab Business Meeting and<br />

Annual Shrine election. It will be held in the Gene Bracewell<br />

Activities Building at the Yaarab Shrine Center, starting<br />

at 9:30 a.m. The Northeast Dekalb club room will be<br />

open and all visitors are welcome to stop by for some great<br />

Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy<br />

If you’ve been to the Shriners Hospitals for Children —<br />

Greenville’s KidZone, there’s no doubt you’ve met their long<br />

term patients Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. Since 1998,<br />

the six-foot tall pair has been seated in the KidZone waiting<br />

to play with any patients who come their way. Raggedy Ann<br />

and Andy were handmade and donated by Janice Fox (wife<br />

of NE Dekalb club president Gordon Fox) in honor of her<br />

great niece, Ansley Powell. Ansley had cerebral palsy<br />

among other health issues but was never a patient at this<br />

hospital. Following Ansley’s passing earlier this year, Janice<br />

wanted to make another donation to the hospital. This<br />

time, she made mini-sized Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls.<br />

The next time you are at Shriners Hospitals for Children —<br />

Greenville, stop by the KidZone to see the new dolls sitting<br />

right next to the originals.<br />

Paulding County Shrine Club<br />

South Fulton Giveaway Winner<br />

There are lots of things going on with Paulding County.<br />

On September 28 and 29 we will be helping our ladies<br />

with their yard sale and on the 29th we will be selling<br />

breakfast plates.<br />

On October 6 we will be taking our beautiful ladies out to<br />

eat for our annual Ladies Night Out. It is time to get out<br />

and collect for our Hospitals. We, as nobles, need to do<br />

everything possible to support the Hospitals. Our kids are<br />

our purpose for being a Shriner. We all need to be out on<br />

the street or at a store front collecting. We pledged<br />

$10,000 and turned in over $6,000 so far.<br />

It was such a Blessing to be at the Hospital Kickoff. The<br />

Divan did a wonderful job on the program.<br />

When you are on bended knee please remember all of our<br />

kids that receive treatment at our Hospitals through the<br />

generosity of all the donations. Also remember our troops.<br />

Paulding County Shrine Club members at the Hospital Kickoff<br />

Tri-County Shrine Club<br />

Summer is coming to an end and we are getting<br />

ready for the fall and the Hospital Kickoff.<br />

Some of our members attended the Southeastern Convention<br />

in New Orleans and had a great time.<br />

The Sportsman Raffle was a real success. Jesse Renfroe,<br />

our secretary, won a pistol. Also, our club sold several winning<br />

tickets.<br />

Tri-County is having a hospital fund raiser by putting on<br />

a poker run November 3rd. All vehicles are welcome to<br />

We have had several members with illnesses in their<br />

Tucker Shrine Club<br />

Nobles, by the time you read this item, our next meeting<br />

(November) will be our election night for 2013 officers.<br />

Once again we will welcome a new president and his line<br />

officers, and once again we will have a new set of plans on<br />

our trestle board, plans that we hope will guide us through<br />

another very successful year.<br />

We will begin this coming year much better off financially<br />

than we were this year. Our success this year is due in<br />

large part to the efforts of our Divan Officers and their selected<br />

staff, who provided additional avenues for clubs and<br />

units to earn funds. But the bottom line is always the<br />

same , It is The Spokes that make the Wheels work. (We is<br />

What We is, Cause You is What You is ), and as long as we<br />

work together as a Team we can reach our loftiest goals.<br />

We can never praise enough, our ladies of Tu-Sh-La, always<br />

standing beside us, whatever the cause might be, they<br />

bring sunshine on cloudy days, and are so like beautiful<br />

flowers in a field of weeds.<br />

Kudos to Past President John Robert Smith, Past Commander<br />

of Yaarab L.O.H. and now serving as 3 rd Lieutenant<br />

Commander in S.E.S.A. also serving as a Chief of Staff in<br />

the 8 th Division of the International L.O.H. Folks I know<br />

that my spending a few nights at Salvation Army Halls,<br />

back during my homeless days doesn’t really qualify me to<br />

speak military talk about this, so if any of this is in error<br />

you can Court-martial John Robert.<br />

Nobles, the Basharat is a wonderful way to communicate,<br />

and to recognize those among us who work above and<br />

beyond the call of duty. I know there are many of our club<br />

members, who like J Rob, are very active in military related<br />

programs. Bill Glenn, Jack Wade, and Past President Rick<br />

Conn who serves the Grand Lodge programs for Veterans,<br />

just to name a few. There are so many interesting stories to<br />

share. So toot your own horn. Keep the item short, send<br />

them, and lets go to press.<br />

Cedar Valley Shrinettes<br />

What a beautiful week this has been, fall is everywhere,<br />

thank GOD for the four seasons we have in Georgia.<br />

We have had a bountiful year in fund raising projects and<br />

fellowship working for Shriners Hospitals For Children.<br />

We are still busy doing money projects for our club and our<br />

nobles Shrine Club. Our club would like to thank President<br />

Scooter Stephens and his officers, and President Diane Tracy<br />

and her officers for all the wonderful support they have<br />

shown to each member this year.<br />

Everyone, I am sure, had a good time at the S.E. Shrine<br />

Convention in New Orleans, also the Fun Fall Outing in<br />

Panama City Beach, Florida.<br />

We as a club was honored to have special guests this<br />

year to mention a few, Past Potentate J D Mitchell and lady<br />

Linda, High Priest and Prophet Larry Cline and Lady Jeri,<br />

Recorder Danny Huggins and Lady Dona. Our club welcomes<br />

all clubs to come and visit and enjoy the food and<br />

fellowship on the 4 th Thursday of each month.<br />

Hope everyone enjoys the up coming holidays and not to<br />

forget the true meaning of the season of special holidays.<br />

We as a club, can count our many, many blessing we have<br />

and support those who need us for whatever reason.<br />

I am proud of our ladies. We got new shrinette shirts,<br />

and girls they sure look good on all of you.<br />

Sorry to report, we have a lot of sadness and sickness in<br />

our club and we need all the prayers and concerns that we<br />

can extend to each Shrine Family.<br />

Let me say again, I am proud to be the Reporter for the<br />

Cedar Valley Shrinettes. I take it as an honor to write for<br />

our club, and I personally thank Sam Black for all the good<br />

news he puts in our Basharat each issue. He is wonderful to<br />

report to, and I hope he will be Editor for years to come.<br />

Let’s all put our heads together and send all of our collections<br />

to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, as the children<br />

are in need of our help.<br />

GOD continue to be with our military and families. We<br />

have all been touched by the Middle East wars, by a love<br />

one or friend injured or killed, I know I have. We honor<br />

them everyday by the freedom we enjoy.<br />

Cher-O-Kettes<br />

in the Saturday morning parade it didn’t bother Yaarab’s<br />

Divan.<br />

Several Cher-O-Kettes are looking forward to the Panama<br />

City Beach outing coming up the first week in October.<br />

Cher-O-Kettes are once again taking advantage of the<br />

Belk Charity Sale event to raise some funds for their club.<br />

The $5.00 off coupons can be purchased from most any<br />

active Cher-O-Kette. The charity sale is being held on November<br />

3.<br />

During the recent Hospital Kickoff, the Cher-O-Kettes<br />

turned in a $1000.00 donation for the Shriners Hospitals<br />

for Children. The majority of the funds for the donation<br />

came from the fall Belk Charity Sale that the Cher-O-Kettes<br />

participated in.<br />

October birthdays to be announced are Kim Payne (13),<br />

The summer has gone by quickly. Our members have<br />

enjoyed trips to Hiawassee, New Orleans, and the Potentate's<br />

Cruise. We also had an outing at Hooters as a thank<br />

you to the men in our club who were thousandaires.<br />

Thanks too, for all who worked or recruited workers for<br />

the Nascar race. Our club raised money for the Hospital<br />

drive. As I write this, I have just returned from attending<br />

the hospital kickoff at the Shrine Center. What a wonderful<br />

motivational evening. I hope we all keep in mind, as we<br />

approach fall, the purpose of raising money to help the<br />

Shriners Hospitals for Children. Ladies remember to help<br />

support and encourage each Shriner to work for the hospital.<br />

We continue to miss seeing Nita Gresham at our meetings.<br />

Our wishes are you will gain your strength back from<br />

your chemo treatments and be back with us soon. We miss<br />

you.<br />

It's time to pick the pumpkins from the vine, carve them<br />

up, and make them shine! Halloween and Thanksgiving<br />

are just around the corner and the larders need to be filled<br />

with all the special delights. Queen Mary announced she<br />

can help fill those larders with the Pastry Sales like we had<br />

last year. She will be taking orders in November for delivery<br />

in December. They were lip-smacking good, as best I<br />

can remember.<br />

Our September Session was chocked full of news from<br />

Supreme and accolades from Supreme Queen Susie for how<br />

well you all did during her Official Visit in July. You are all<br />

to be congratulated for all of your hard work. Our Working<br />

Fellowship Group is to be congratulated as they came in #1<br />

in toys, games, school supplies, disposable cameras, gift<br />

cards & crafts to the hospitals in the Working Fellowship<br />

Group, collected from the Ladies of the Household. They<br />

were No. 3 in the pillow donations and #5 in all items and<br />

cash ($31,000 FY 2011).<br />

Queen Mary Moon has asked that we all plan to attend<br />

the October 10th Stated Session for Founder's Day and<br />

Cancer Awareness. She has asked that all of the Past<br />

Queens wear dresses in the color of their year. She would<br />

also like for all of us to honor any of our relatives or ourselves<br />

who have suffered with cancer or passed away. We<br />

can do this by wearing a pin or something to signify Cancer<br />

Awareness.<br />

November 10th & 11th will be our Annual Fall Festival at<br />

Jim Miller Park, located at 2245 Calloway Road in Marietta,<br />

Ga. The times are Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.<br />

and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.in Building A.<br />

There will also be A Recycle event and an AKC Dog Agility<br />

Event going on in the park at the same time. We hope to<br />

have 100 or more vendors showing their wares, according<br />

to Princess Royale, Jackie Patton. If you know of anyone<br />

who might like to participate, please give Princess Jackie a<br />

call, at 678-591-9851, so she can get an application to them.<br />

We will also be drawing for that adorable Mercedes Benz<br />

that we have been selling tickets for all spring and summer.<br />

Ticket Donations are $5 per ticket or 5 for $20. You sure<br />

don't want to miss that!!! The November 14th Stated Session<br />

will have the drawing for the $500 Kroger Gift Card<br />

Giveaway, so don't forget to stock up on Kroger Gift Cards<br />

at the October Session.<br />

Queen Mary has announced a Ceremonial to be held on<br />

November 18th at 2:00 p.m. at Chamblee-Sardis Lodge.<br />

There will not be a luncheon served prior to the Ceremonial;<br />

however we will have coffee and desserts after the Ceremonial.<br />

Ladies, Daughters of the Nile is an important and very<br />

special group. We have worked together through good<br />

times and bad and continued to meet our goals in donations<br />

to the Shrine Hospitals. It is our close and loving<br />

membership that makes our Shrine Center the special place<br />

it is. We need all of our members in attendance to keep the<br />

momentum going. If you need assistance in participating<br />

in Sessions or special events, please call a member of the<br />

Ambassadors and they will assist you in finding a ride to<br />

and from the event. As you walk through your daily lives<br />

remember the warmth of the Fall season, the leaves turning<br />

their majestic colors and lighting up our lives and the<br />

warmth of the fire in the fireplace to warm your toes, your<br />

nose and your hearts, along with the wonderful aromas<br />

flowing from the kitchen to warm your soul. Have a<br />

Happy Halloween and a Blessed and Peaceful Thanksgiving.<br />

The Derringers<br />

The Derringers took a few months off, but are back to a<br />

normal schedule now. Our men are out collecting and raising<br />

money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We are<br />

looking forward to the Hospital Kickoff.<br />

We have adopted Gentle Interventions as a charitable<br />

organization we are going to help this holiday season. Gentle<br />

Interventions has a Thanksgiving dinner for the families<br />

they help each year several weeks before Thanksgiving. We<br />

will buy food for the families to prepare for their Thanksgiving<br />

meal at their home. Some of our members will help<br />

at the Thanksgiving dinner cooking and serving the food. It<br />

is a fun day for the families and heartwarming for the volunteers.<br />

Hope everyone has had a great summer, but I think we<br />

are all looking forward to some cooler weather and the fall<br />

season. Stay safe and healthy.

Gwinn-etts<br />

First let me thank everyone for their prayers for Jackson<br />

Noland. His open heart surgery was a complete success. It<br />

was amazing to see a small baby acting like nothing happened<br />

to him the day after a major surgery. He did have to<br />

return to the hospital with an infection in his incision, but<br />

other than that it was all smooth sailing. He could be a little<br />

bit spoiled now though.<br />

Gwinnett was well represented at the Southeastern in<br />

New Orleans. The train ride was fabulous and very entertaining.<br />

Who knew you could do the electric slide on a<br />

moving train and especially that the train conductor would<br />

join in the fun. The ride home was a little quieter, but the<br />

pillow fight at the end was very amusing. Bourbon Street<br />

was great. We all loved the bands and specialty drinks. The<br />

New Orleans Steamboat ride was nice and informative.<br />

The red dress parade was a site to behold. I don’t think I<br />

have ever seen so many red dresses.<br />

Although our July birthday ladies were not able to attend<br />

we still celebrated their birthday at Coastal Breeze. In<br />

August we celebrated at the Movie Tavern. The movie was<br />

Hope Springs. The movie and food both were fabulous.<br />

We topped of the night with Pina Colada cake for Bonita<br />

and Mary’s birthdays.<br />

We have a large group going to Panama City Beach.<br />

Some are going to make a week vacation out of it. It is always<br />

a great relaxed trip and I am sure this year will be the<br />

same. I can already taste the shrimp.<br />

The Fun Fest will be on Oct 13 th this year from 10 a.m. to<br />

4 p.m. in Dacula. It will be a day of fun for children as well<br />

as adults. It is also fun to see the kids having a great time.<br />

The Red Solo Cup Party was loads of fun, but a damper<br />

was put on it when Keith Newbern wasn’t feeling well, and<br />

had to go home. About a week later he had to have emergency<br />

gall bladder surgery. I guess that explains him not<br />

feeling well. We have all missed Keith and Bonita at our<br />

events and wish him a speedy recovery.<br />

Many of our members are already planning for the Halloween<br />

party at Yaarab. They are really being creative with<br />

their costumes.<br />

We have several members that have had illnesses and<br />

injuries…please pray for them all.<br />

Karinat’s<br />

The Karinat’s took a break during the summer so it was<br />

great to see everyone in September. During the break, several<br />

attended the Southeastern Shrine Association in New<br />

Orleans with our Arab Guardsmen. Some of us rode the<br />

train and had a great time. An 11 hour train ride forces you<br />

to have fun! Even though it literally rained on our parade,<br />

our spirits were not dampened and Bourbon Street will<br />

never be the same!<br />

Within two weeks or so of New Orleans, Potentate Chuck<br />

Rager and Lady Pat were on the Carnival cruise ship along<br />

with Betsy Briamonte and her friend Evelyn Horgan. We<br />

went to four ports and had a wonderful time on shore and<br />

on the ship. Isaac, thankfully, went west and we went<br />

southeast. Like the comedian said, “ If you were drunk, you<br />

walked straight, and if you were sober, you looked drunk”.<br />

None of us got seasick, just had a good time and made<br />

some new friends. We learned a couple of new dances as<br />

well.<br />

The Hospital Crusade Kickoff was great and well attended.<br />

Who can go away from any kickoff with a dry eye! The<br />

kids are truly an inspiration to us all. It swells your heart to<br />

see what the Shrine organization can and does do for so<br />

many.<br />

Some of the Arab Guard went to Panama City in October<br />

and good time was had by all of the Guard and Karinat’s.<br />

The hotel we stayed in was very nice.<br />

A Halloween party is goulish and spooky and the one in<br />

the ballroom is expected to be just that. How can you NOT<br />

have a good time at a Halloween party with the costumes<br />

and great music to dance to.<br />

Our Annual Party is November 3. We’re looking forward<br />

to a wonderful time celebrating Gene Baker’s year. It is<br />

always nice to share good food and fellowship.<br />

Let’s not forget the blessings we have and have a safe<br />

and Happy Thanksgiving.<br />

LOH-ettes<br />

Apologies to the LOH-ettes for my being out of town on<br />

a meeting night. The most recent absence we went to Oklahoma<br />

City for an FAA reunion. However, Leng Conn has<br />

kept me up to date about some of our outings. I have managed<br />

to attend most of the parades, as they are so much<br />

fun.<br />

The first visit was to the Social at Albany, GA, June 21<br />

and 22. Several of our members who went reported they<br />

had a good time. Second visit was the Military Ball at El<br />

Hasa Temple in Ashland, KY July 19, 20,and 21. These<br />

people really rolled out the red carpet for everyone. All had<br />

a great time and the food and hospitality were fabulous.<br />

Among those who went from our Shrine Center were Jack<br />

and Barbara Smith, Tom and Martha Fluent, J. D. and Judy<br />

Henson, Bill and Shirley Glenn, John Robert and<br />

Anita Smith, and Rick and Leng Conn.<br />

Most importantly during the SESA in New Orleans our<br />

Thom Fluent went in as Commander of the LOH SESA,<br />

thereby relieving Bill Wagner from this position. John Robert<br />

ran and was elected for 3rd Lieutenant Commander.<br />

Paulding County Shrine Ladies<br />

Thank you to the ladies who were able to help with our<br />

annual Miss Hiram Pageant. Paula Beavers and Lisa Hicks<br />

greatly appreciate your help.<br />

We would like to thank our guys for their help at our<br />

Yard Sale and cooking breakfast.<br />

We will have a fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse in Hiram<br />

on October 11, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.<br />

On October 27 we will be giving out candy at Trick or<br />

Treat Village and need donations of candy. This is a huge<br />

event in Paulding County at Paulding Meadows Park. It's<br />

so much fun seeing all the happy faces of the kids!<br />

We are still collecting new toys and books for the kids at<br />

our Hospitals. Please bring any of these items to the clubhouse<br />

and leave them in the ladies meeting room.<br />

The ones that went to the Hospital Kickoff had a great<br />

time. The program was wonderful and so was the food!<br />

Please keep Murial Rainey, Doris Lance and Ginny Boulton<br />

in your Prayers.<br />

Deal got to hold the baby gator. It was nice to have Billy<br />

and Jean Deal of Paulding Shrine Club join in on the<br />

swamp fun.<br />

We are back to work at the Roller Girls. There are only<br />

two dates left, September 22 and October 20 th . If you haven’t<br />

made it out to see you need to come check it out.<br />

We are looking forward to Panama City in October, no<br />

telling what kind of adventures we will have. I am sure it<br />

will be fun. Safe travels to everyone and Happy Halloween.<br />

Hope everyone had a great time at the South Fulton Annual<br />

Harley giveaway. Congratulations to Potentate Chuck<br />

Rager and Lady Pat on winning the Harley. Hope they<br />

have save travels with it.<br />

We all had a good time in New Orleans; it was a pleasure<br />

sharing my hometown with our friends. The weather was<br />

not entirely cooperative but that happens. It is 90 degrees<br />

one minute and raining the next. That is why the mosquito<br />

is the state bird !! A large group from South Fulton got up<br />

close and personal with the animals in the swamp. It was a<br />

BIG shock to have a baby alligator put on my neck (not<br />

9th Annual Yaarab’s Car Show—Huge Success<br />

The 9 th Annual Yaarab Shrine Car Show was held Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18 at Jim Miller Park in Marietta.<br />

This was the first year that Yaarab’s Clubs and Units had the greatest participation. A special “THANKS” is extended<br />

to ALL nobles, families, and the general public for showing up and making it possible. Through everyone’s efforts, Yaarab<br />
