What a wonderful relief to 

say that spring is finally here! 

As we enter the second 

season of the year, we mark 

the end of a very snowy 

winter and its long nights. As 

our days become warmer, 

the weather encourages the 

blossoming of flowers and a 

proliferation of beautiful 

colors where once there was 

only gray. 

Our recent celebration of 

the Samaj Holi was an 

enormous success. It was 

great turnout, boasting a 

gathering of more than 800 

attendees. To add to this 

excitement, an amazing 

group of 300 children from 

different age groups 

participated in this program. 

We received very positive 

feedback from many 

attendees, and are sincerely 

appreciative of the 

comments. Everyone was 

extremely pleased with the 

new facility, delicious food, 

and our “Oscar” type 

trophies. Right now, we are 

preparing for our sensational 

summer activities. We have 

arranged for the visa camp 

on May 7 th at Jain Temple in 

Farmington Hills, MI. We 

request all our members to 

take advantage to get an 

“onsite” visa and also learn 

more about PIO card from the 

Consulate General on that 

day. 

As previously announced, the 

Senior Chapter of Gujarati 

Samaj has arranged a tour of 

the Tulip Festival in Holland, 

MI. This trip is only for Gujarati 

Samaj Seniors. This one day 

trip will include: travel by 

luxury coach line, a visit to 

Dutch Village, a tour of the 

Tulip Festival, a packaged 

lunch/breakfast, and dinner at 

Swami Vivekanand Ashram. 

All seniors are invited to 

attend this fun-filled trip.

information in this issue of 

Samaj Darshan. 

This year, Picnic Mela will be 

held on Sunday, July 31 st , at 

Stony Creek Metro Park. Mark 

your calendar to join us for this 

annual celebration. Adults 

and children will find exciting 

games, adventurous outdoor 

activities and plenty of mouthwatering 

food. This is an event 

not to be missed! 

We are also working very 

diligently to publish our 30 th 

Anniversary Directory. This 

directory will only be 

provided to current Samaj 

members. Therefore, to be 

included in this historic 

event, everyone is 

encouraged to renew their 

membership. Membership 

renewal allows family and 

friends to continually enjoy 

the year round activities at 

Samaj. New members are 

always welcome, so please

Ingredients

1 oz raspberry puree 1 oz grapefruit juice 

1 oz pineapple juice 2 oz orange sherbet 

1 oz lemonade 

Blend all ingredients (except lemonade) briefly with half a glassful 

of crushed ice and pour into a highball glass. Add lemonade, 

garnish with fruit, add straws and serve. 

Fruit Flip-Flop 

Ingredients 

1 cup yoghurt 1 cup fruit juice 

Place all ingredients into a blender jar. Cover and whiz on 

medium speed until well blended. Pour into a Collins glass, and 

serve. 

Golden Glow Punch 

Ingredients 

6 oz orange juices concentrate 6 oz lemonade concentrate 

1 qt chilled apple juice 2 qt chilled ginger ale 

1 pint lemon sherbet ice 

Pour the concentrate and the apple juice into the punch bowl. 

Stir the ginger ale into the bowl. Spoon in sherbet or add an ice 

ring. Serve immediately.

Health Corner 

Cardiovascular diseases heart 

and blood vessel related are the 

leading cause of death in this 

world. People of Indian origin are 

at the highest risk for sudden 

cardiac death amongst all the 

ethnic groups put together. Every 

29 seconds, a heart attack 

occurs in the U.S while one 

person dies every minute. Only 

one out of six patients has any 

significant warning for a heart 

attack before they encounter 

their first one. Half of them will be 

dead before they can even 

make it to the hospital. Therefore, 

it is very important for each one 

of us to assess the risk for a heart 

attack. Here are some of the risk 

factors: 

Male over age 45 or female over 

age 55, Diabetes, Hypertension, 

Smoking, Abnormal lipids (HDL 

less than 40, LDL over 100, high 

triglycerides, elevated lpa), Obesity 

(bpm over 30), Family history, 

Elevated homocysteine, Physical 

inactivity. 

There are many more miscellaneous 

risk factors such as depression, gout, 

hypothyroidism, erectile dysfunction, 

and osteoporosis. It is important to 

note that women are at no less risk 

for a heart attack than men. Once 

they reach the perri menopausal 

age. 

Now, let’s take a look at the warning 

signs for heart attacks (or angina): 

Chest discomfort, Jaw pain, Shortness 

of breath, unexpected fatigue or 

weakness, Dizziness or lightheadedness, 

unexplained upper 

back pain with exertion or left 

shoulder pain Unexplained heartburn 

Make sure to bring it to your doctor’s 

attention, if you have any of the 

above symptoms. 

Recently, I had the opportunity to 

meet with many of our community 

leaders and people from the 

Detroit area discussing CPR and 

health awareness among us. I am 

excited that we are going to 

publish a health column in every 

issue of samaj darshan. 

We are arranging for an ongoing 

education program, which allows 

others to partake in a better health 

awareness program such as CPR 

classes, nutrition classes, exercise 

programs such as yoga and 

meditation, as well as several other 

camps, which will address issues for 

improved health.

GUJARATI SAMAJ SENIOR CORNER 

A senior’s meeting was held on Sunday, April 17,2005 in afternoon at Dhiru and Rama Patel’s 

residence in Farmington Hills. More than 20 seniors took part to discuss the activities and 

events for 2005. All suggestions were very interested but few fun activities will be organized to 

build a good foundation for future GSS activities. The top priority activity, every seniors liked, 

was a dinner get-together every two to three months at Indian Restaurant on Sunday 

evening. EC and GSS committee is working on setting up an evening dinner at fine Gujarati 

Restaurant. Look for further information in upcoming Samaj Darshan or register your name 

with GSS committee by sending your name to Dhiru Patel at dhiruspatel@yahoo.com. Other 

activities are under planning, such as visit to Shiv Temple in Flint, Verg Yatara similar to one 

done in 2000, Visit to Niagara Falls with overnight stay, entertainment evening with dinner. 

Now is the time to join the seniors’ team if you are over 55 years and looking forward to enjoy 

future retirement life. If you have parents at home, please register their names with the 

committee to so they can be in touch with other seniors and enjoy the organized events by 

GSS committee.

Leukemia. We all wish and 

pray for his fast recovery and 

healthy life. But that brings 

what is Bone Marrow?

What is bone marrow? 

Bone marrow is the tissue 

found inside the bone that 

produces red blood cells, 

white blood cells and platelets. 

These essential blood cells fight 

infection, carry oxygen and 

help control bleeding. Any 

disease that attacks the bone 

marrow can destroy the body's 

ability to protect itself. 

What are stem cells? 

Stem cells are young blood 

cells, found in the bone 

marrow, from which all other 

types of blood cells develop. 

What is involved in transplant? 

A bone marrow or stem cell 

transplant allows a patient to 

receive high doses of 

chemotherapy or radiation 

therapy to kill diseased cells 

and make room for new, 

healthy cells. These treatments 

are among the most effective 

weapons against many forms 

of cancer, they don't have 

precise aim, and they 

cannot target only diseased 

cells. As a result, many 

normal rapidly dividing cells 

are destroyed during 

treatment. Therefore, 

"rescue" with transplanted 

bone marrow or stem cells 

enables the patient to 

produce new blood cells to 

replace those destroyed 

during treatment. 

How long is the recuperation 

after transplant? 

The time it takes for 

transplanted bone marrow 

to engraft varies from 

patient to patient. 

Depending on what type of 

transplant is performed, the 

patient may remain in the 

hospital anywhere from two 

weeks to two months after 

transplantation. This is 

necessary so that the 

doctors can monitor and 

treat the patient carefully. 

After the patient has been 

discharged from the 

hospital, he or she will be 

seen at the hospital's 

outpatient clinic at least 

three times per week for 

several weeks. One hundred 

days after transplant, most 

patients can remain in the 

care of their referring 

physician. Patients need to 

receive check-ups yearly 

and can usually return to 

work full-time approximately 

six months after transplant.
