ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Chairperson’s
Report
“
ROBERT CROSS
As I look back over the
past twelve months I
simply cannot believe what
we have achieved, and our
Trust certainly has a lot to
be thankful for.
”
The year started with a concrete structure rising
from the ground. Slowly, as the months progressed,
the site transformed into the image we have all
been looking at for the last 6 years, our amazing
new House.
A project like this does not happen without a strong
team of people truly dedicated to getting our new
House built; the tasks and challenges we faced were
large and at times seemed insurmountable. Thankfully the
entire team worked strongly to make decisions and meet
timeframes so our families would finally have a
new home.
We are delighted and extremely proud of the new House,
and it is difficult to put the entire project into words. The
design created by Archaus is visually very impressive,
the flow of the building and interaction of spaces are
excellent. Construction processes and finishes used by
Mainzeal are to an exceptional standard, they were also
compassionate towards our cause during the process
in so many ways. The team of consultants, Maltbys,
Aurecon, Clendon Burns and Park, Holmes Fire Safety and
Craigie and Associates worked together tirelessly to keep
everything on track.
The ‘icing on the cake’ for any project such as this, always
seems to be the interior design. The design team was
lead by Honour Creative and I think everyone who has
personally seen the House will agree, our team has really
excelled with the completed fit out has surpassed all our
expectations.
During the rebuilding project our Family Room at
Wellington Childrens Hospital continued to support
families. It is a room of respite, a room of healing, a
room of hope and a room where families find comfort
while knowing they are only steps away from their child’s
bedside.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the
tremendous support of our donors and supporters who
eagerly watched the process as closely as we did. We
are truly thankful in the current economic times to have
received such generosity and we hope we have respected
their support fully by delivering a House they can be proud
to be associated with.
I have been grateful to have the strong support of my
fellow Trustees, and our Building Committee who have
faced every challenge and crossed every bridge with me,
using their expertise to the considerable benefit of our
Trust and of course, the families who will use the House.
To our CEO and her team, who seem to have been at the
coal face of this entire project, not only dealing with the
building process, the financial tracking and ensuring we
still continued operationally to accommodate families, it
has been a daunting task for the entire team and we are
indebted to their commitment to the Trust during this
time.
In my final words for this report I would like to mention our
families. Until our new doors opened to them they were in
temporary accommodation which was not to our normal
standard. However, they could see each day when they
visited the hospital their new home being created, so they
appreciatively accepted the temporary accommodation in
the interim. When we witnessed the awe in their eyes as
they entered our doors on the 29th October, we knew we
had created something special for future generations of
seriously ill children and their families.
HOROWHENUA COMMUNITY VISIT THEIR ROOM
2013 was a complex year as we tried to manage the
building project without interrupting our services to
families. It was a year of huge challenges during which,
I witnessed so many people rise to the task and I am
extremely thankful for everyone’s support and assistance.
Our team strength was certainly its numbers, diversity and
determination.
The actual building project consumed our year, no matter
what role people had in or with this organisation, everyone
was touched by it at one point or other. Although it was
our year to be thankful, for many of us it was our year of
firsts, the first floor, the first window, the first stairs and
we even were excited over the first toilet! The year seemed
to pass extremely quickly and before we knew it the paint
was on the walls and the furnishings were being delivered.
It is incredible to have an image in your mind for so many
years and now physically have it standing in front of you.
A personal highlight for me this year was being part of
the interior design team. Working closely with Letitia
Montford, a Trustee and Frances Fraser from Honour
Creative we managed a vast array of concepts and colours
to bring our House to life. Our task, and keeping within
the budget, was made a lot easier thanks to the generosity
of suppliers especially BM Scott for our Degateur floors,
Morgan Furniture (La-z-boy) for incredible seats for our
families to relax into, James Dunlop and Charles Parsons
for supplying metres and metres of fabric at little cost.
There are so many parts to the project, and only when you
personally visit the House to see the size and standard of
what we have created can you fully understand the journey
we have just completed. It simply is a credit to all involved
and we are delighted everyone is as proud of our House as
we are.
Although the building project was exciting, finding the
funds to keep everything going was always the priority.
Our generous room sponsors thankfully continued to
meet their pledge commitments during the year. Suzuki
decided our carpark offered them a unique sponsorship
opportunity and the Horowhenua Community adopted
our teenagers lounge in recognition of their support.
The Dugdale Charitable Trust teamed with Milestone
Homes and Van Baarle Construction to build a house in
Carterton, which was auctioned as a fundraiser to sponsor
a bedroom. All our room sponsors are mentioned later in
this report and we hope you will help us thank them by
supporting such caring businesses when possible.
Once again, our events were a critical part of our
fundraising programme. This year our Street Appeal was
a great success raising 20% more than the previous year.
Thanks to an extremely large team of volunteers and
businesses, especially New World, deciding to reach out
to their local communities to raise funds for us.
Our Supper Club events were held in Wellington and
Hawkes Bay. Both were very successful events thanks to
the assistance of so many loyal supporters and sponsors.
Guests were treated to delectable food at Capital E
created by Martin Bosley’s team in Wellington and Dish
Catering at the Opera House in Hawkes Bay. Liquid
refreshments were provided by 42BELOW, Liquid Winks,
Lion Nathan and Crossroads Winery. Carlton Party Hire
ensured all our party needs were met at these events and
other during the year.
McDonalds Franchisees once again helped our cause by
holding a golf day on a sunny March day, which raised
significant funds towards our building project.
This year we also held several events which were not so
much focussed on raising funds. The first of these was the
laying of our Mauri Stone to signify the life force that lies
within the site. Kura Moehu conducted the ceremony and
Donell Bullock from Ronald McDonald House Charities in
Chicago laid the stone. The first of October, the day when
the House legally transferred back to the Trust, Kura and
members of the Waiwhetu Marae joined us to officially
bless our House at a very moving dawn ceremony.
After weeks of setting up and establishing the House we
were able to officially open our doors to our friends and
supporters. At 11am on Friday 26th October Joanna Todd
and Lionel Whitehead were ably assisted by young Kobe
Uhlenberg to cut the official ribbon and start the new life
of our new House. This was followed by a weekend of
celebrations to recognise the huge amount of support we
had received from so many.
Lions Clubs had their special Saturday in recognition of
their immense support. We were especially privileged to
once again have Jindelle Beeck join us from Lions Clubs
International in the USA. On the Sunday we opened our
doors to the public and we were overwhelmed by their
comments and compliments. We also held special events
for significant donors, volunteers and Wellington Hospital
Staff.
On Monday the 29th October, we were delighted to
welcome our families into their new House. Some had
watched for many months, the House nearing completion
and finally they could call it home. It is fair to say they
were somewhat overwhelmed by their amazing new
surroundings. The families quickly worked out where
everything was and after a very long few years, life in our
House has now returned to normal.
We would like to give thanks for our incredible volunteers
who take joy in the pure act of giving without ever asking
for a thing in return. Cooking a meal, helping out around
the House, doing office work, helping the families, doing
our washing, picking up groceries; these are just a few of
the tasks our dedicated volunteers tackle for us, and our
appreciation is endless because their generosity is endless
too.
Mostly I am thankful for our families. Everyday I listen
to our families, it is clear what we offer goes far beyond
meeting their basic needs—as critically important as they
are. For our families, our House is more than somewhere
to sleep, our Family Room is more than a place to get a
cup of coffee. Our facilities offer families an environment
where they no longer have to feel alone. When they walk
through our doors, families enter a supportive community
where others understand what it is like to have, or to be, a
child with a serious illness. Mums and Dads from different
communities and cultures share a coffee, share a meal, and
share their hopes and fears with other parents who know
just how hard things can be. And this is why we believe so
strongly and passionately about what we do everyday.
Thank you for caring about our families.
ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Treasurer’s Report
DENIS WOOD
With the building project well underway at the start of
2012, our Trust faced the tremendous task of ensuring
we had sufficient funds in hand to meeting our financial
obligations. We had committed to the building project
while being well short of the total funds required in
our bank (but we were fully covered by a pre-approved
mortgage), in the hope the urgency of the building project
would inspire our donors and supporters, without us
having to incur considerable debt.
Thankfully our donors and supporters did rally as we had
hoped, with a continual stream of donations and grants
ensuring we met our monthly commitments. Although
there are too many donors for me to mention personally I
would like to assure every donor and supporter that their
gift, no matter the amount, is extremely valued.
I would like to especially mention the ongoing support
from Ronald McDonald House Charities, who have stood
by us through out this entire project. We were truly
privileged to receive an extremely generous gift from Noel
and Joanna Todd, who have supported the House since it
opened in 1991. Another gesture of extreme kindness was
a gift from Collis and Helen Blake. Our delight of their gift
sadly turned to sorrow when Collis passed away just a few
weeks after visiting our nearly finished House.
Our Lions Clubs continued their amazing on-going support
raising significant funds to complete the Lions Den on the
second floor of our House. Our thanks to all the Clubs,
and especially to Rex Bullard and Roy Peterson for their
continued inspirational leadership of their campaign.
So many businesses had pledged their support of our
project. Given current financial times, I am astounded only
one pledge did not fully complete their donation. It is a
privilege to have the commitment of businesses with such
integrity.
We have also received considerable in kind gifts or heavily
sponsored products to help complete our House. Most of
which was used to complete the interior fit out well below
budget but still to a high standard.
As the year drew to a close, and our final commitments
to the building project drew to an end. I am delighted
to report prudent management of the capital project
combined with the generosity of so many has resulted in
our debt being considerably lower than forecast.
We look forward now to the annual task of raising the
considerable funds required to operate our new facilities
with the overall objective of our Trust, once again, being
debt free.
ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Ronald McDonald House
Wellington Trust
Notes to the Summary of Financial Statements
For the year ended 31 December 2012
1. Ronald McDonald House Wellington Trust is a charitable trust registered under the Charities Act 2005. The financial
statements of the Trust are General Purpose financial reports which have been prepared in accordance with generally
accepted accounting practice (NZ GAAP)
2. Ronald McDonald House Wellington Trust qualifies for differential reporting because it is defined as not large. All differential
reporting exemptions have been applied.
3. All costs directly attributable to the building of the new house have been capitalised. While under construction the building
was not depreciated.
4. The summary financial statements have been extracted from the full financial statements. The financial statements of
Ronald McDonald House Wellington Trust including Statement of Financial Performance, Statement of Financial Position and
Statement of Movements in Equity cannot provide a full understanding due to their summary nature. This understanding can
be obtained only in reference to the annual financial statements of the Trust.
5. A copy of the financial statements may be obtained on request from the Trust’s office Telephone (04) 389-5055,
P O Box 7055, Wellington 6242.
6. The full annual financial statements of Ronald McDonald House Wellington Trust have been audited by BDO Wellington who
have issued a qualified audit opinion in respect to the financial statements on 2 April 2013. BDO Wellington have audited
these summary financial statements and found them to be consistent with the Annual Financial Statements.
7. The Trustees authorised the publication of these summary financial statements on 2 April 2013.
8. These summary financial statements are in compliance with FRS-39.
Approved on behalf of the Board:
Robert Cross
Chairman
Denis Wood
Trustee
Report of the Independent Auditor on
the Summary Financial Statements
To the Board of Ronald McDonald House Wellington Trust
The accompanying summary financial statements, which
comprise the summary statement of financial position as
at 31 December 2012, the summary income statement and
summary statement of changes in equity for the year then
ended, and related notes, are derived from the audited
financial statements of Ronald McDonald House Wellington
Trust (‘Ronald McDonald House’) for the year ended 31
December 2012. We expressed a qualified audit opinion on
those financial statements in our report dated 2 April 2012
(see below). Those financial statements, and the summary
financial statements, do not reflect the effects of events
that occurred subsequent to the date of our report on those
financial statements.
The summary financial statements do not contain all the
disclosures required for full financial statements under
generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand.
Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not
a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of
Ronald McDonald House.
Boards’ Responsibility for the Summary Financial
Statements
The Board are responsible for the preparation of a summary of
the audited financial statements in accordance with FRS-39:
Summary Financial Reports.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary
financial statements based on our procedures, which were
conducted in accordance with International Standard on
Auditing (New Zealand) (ISA (NZ)) 810 Engagements to Report
on Summary Financial Statements.
Other than in our capacity as auditor we have no relationship
with, or interests in, Ronald McDonald House.
Opinion
In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived
from the audited financial statements of Ronald McDonald
House Wellington Trust for the year ended 31 December
2012 are consistent, in all material respects, with those
financial statements, in accordance with FRS-39. However, the
summary financial statements are qualified to the equivalent
extent as the audited financial statements of Ronald
McDonald House for the year ended 31 December 2012.
Controls over revenue from Street Appeal income recorded
at $70,881 within the classification of Capital Campaign
income in the Statement of Financial Performance, prior to
being recorded are limited, and there are no practical audit
procedures to determine the effect of these limited controls.
Accordingly, the completeness of Street Appeal income
and Accumulated Funds is unable to be determined. Our
qualified audit opinion states that, except for the effects of
the described matter, those financial statements comply with
generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand and
give a true and fair view of the financial position of Ronald
McDonald House at 31 December 2012, and its financial
performance for the year then ended.
