CURRICULUM VITAE
Qualifications: PhD, Dr habil, MSCc, BSc
Current Position: A/Prof Economic Geology
Employment history: since 1997 UWA
Significant contribution to field of research:
I have been involved in economic geology research in the past 15 years at various universities in
Germany, USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia. I have always enjoyed working in a team oriented
environment and consequently supervised 10 Ph.D. students, 18 Honours students and worked
together with three postdoctoral fellows on scale-integrated, multi-disciplinary projects related to
metallic ore systems and associated fault zone networks. The significant contribution I have made to
the field of economic geology relates to an increased understanding of the structural-hydrothermal
alteration and fluid architecture and geochemical processes of orogenic gold, Banded Iron
Formation (BIF) related iron and Volcanic-Hosted Massive Sulfide (VHMS) deposits. Since taking
up a staff position at UWA I have applied mineral system analyses to different metallic ore deposits
such as gold, copper, and iron; In 2000 I published together with Dr. Cassidy a wide-ranging
mineral system model for Archean orogenic gold deposits. Together with Dr. Peter Neumayr we
established a model about structural and fluid connectivity in fault zone networks and associated
pulses of gold mineralization through time. A joint project with Dr. Bateman resulted in a revised
comprehensive model for the Golden Mile that emphasises the protracted structural-hydrothermal
alteration and fluid evolution of 45 Ma. Lately I have diversified my research activity and started an
international iron ore research program together with the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais at
Belo Horizonte (Brazil). We are investigating the structural control, hydrothermal alteration and
fluid flow in the giant Carajas and Iron Quadrangle iron ore provinces and comparing those with
some of the ginat Hamersley iron ore deposits (e.g., Tom Price and Paraburdoo). Preliminary results
include the mapping of hydrothermal alteration zones around BIF- and jaspilite-related, high-grade
(>63% Fe) iron ore bodies and definition of fluid pathways for the ascending and descending
hydrothermal fluids. Two PhD students from Brazil, one from the UWA and honours students are
involved in this exciting venture. In 2008 I will be the chief editor, together with Profs. Rosiere
(Belo Horizonte), Gutzmer and Beukes (Johannesburg), for a Review in Economic Geology book
entitled: High-grade BIF-related iron ore deposits. This book will be published in conjunction with a
SEG short course about the same topic. Further diversification include a PhD projects on the
structural control of the komatiite hosted Flying Fox nickel deposit, the Golden Groves VHMS
deposits and melt inclusion studies on granites that are spatially associated with gold systems. The
latter will compare growth faults and their control on metals with modern seafloor targets (by
Nautilus Ltd). The results of these scientific endeavors have been published in book chapters and
journals such as, for example, Economic Geology, Mineralium Deposita, Chemical Geology,
Journal of Structural Geology or Geochimica Cosmochimica Acta.

Other evidence of impact and contributions to the field
I have been Associate Editor for Mineralium Deposita from 1999 to 2002 and currently referee for
several international journals such as Geology, Economic Geology, Mineralium Deposita, Chemical
Geology, Tectonophysics, Australian Journal of Earth Sciences, and South American Earth
Sciences. I am also a referee for funding agencies such as Australian Research Council and National
Science Foundation (USA). I am currently a guest editor for Mineralium Deposita for a series of
papers on Brazilian ore deposits.
In 2001 I received the Habilitation (Dr habil) from the Technical University of Munich (Germany)
for work on the crustal continuum of Archean orogenic gold deposits.
More recently, in 2004 and 2005 I was a Keynote speaker at the SIME (First Brazilian Exploration
Conference), and the First Brazilian Metallogeny Conference, both held in Brazil. I was an invited
speaker at the Geological Society of Peru in Lima and at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.
In 2006 and 2007, I was organizing a short course on “Mineral System Analyses of Gold” in
Munich on behalf of the SGA. On behalf of the SEG I am currently organizing, together with Profs.
Rosiere (Brazil) and Gutzmer (South Africa), a short course on high-grade iron deposits to be held
in conjunction with the SEG conference 2008 in Johannesburg (South Africa). As part of the short
course we are working on a book to be published in the series “Reviews in Economic Geology” with
21 authors contributing papers; I will be first author on two papers and co-author on 3 others.
Since 2006 I am Deputy Director of the Centre for Exploration Targeting and have been actively
involved in setting up the new Centre and recruiting key-personal. From 2001 to 2004 and 2006 to
today I have been honours coordinator for Geology in the School of Earth and Geographical
Sciences. Since 2001 I am the curator of the economic geology rock collection within the former
Centre for Global Metallogeny, and now CET.
I have been consultant for national and international mining companies such as Hamersley Iron,
Normandy Mining, Boddington Gold Mine, Placer Dome, Barrick Mines, Mawson West, Eclipse
Resources, Yamana (Brazil), and Horizonte Mineira (Peru).
