KNOW BEFORE YOU GO...
The South Pacific may appear overwhelming for a first-time visitor, or even a seasoned traveler. The following
information will help prepare you for your vacation:
Passport & Entry Requirements
This information is subject to change. It is advisable
to check with the nearest government representative
of your destination prior to your travel.
Australia - Passports must be valid for longer than
the period of the stay. Visitors to Australia (with the
exception of New Zealand passport holders) will
require a visitor visa that allows for stays in Australia
of up to 12 weeks. Visitor visas can be applied for
online and must be done prior to arrival in Australia.
New Zealand - Passports valid for at least 3 months,
as well as onward or return air tickets, must be
produced on arrival by all visitors. Visas are not
required by most foreign nationals provided they
are bona fide tourists and do not intend to stay
more than 30 days.
French Polynesia - A valid passport, return airline
ticket to resident country or to at least two more
continuing destinations as well as sufficient funds
to cover their planned stay is required for entry.
Fiji - Visitors will be issued with a tourist visa on
arrival. All visitors must have a passport that is valid
for at least three months after departure from Fiji,
onward or return air tickets and sufficient funds to
cover their stay.
Currency
ATM’s are prevalent in most areas, and are usually
your best source for cash at the most current
exchange rate.
Australia - The currency is based on the Australian
Dollar (AUD).
New Zealand - The currency is based on the New
Zealand Dollar (NZD).
French Polynesia - The currency is based on the
Pacific Franc (XPF).
Fiji - The national currency is Fijian Dollars (FJD).
Adapters and Converters
A plug adapter and voltage converter are
recommended, as they may not be available
at all hotels.
Australia - Electric standard is 240/250 volts AC
50HZ. Universal outlets for 110 volts (shavers only)
are standard in most hotels.
New Zealand - Electric standard is 220/240 volts AC,
generally accepting 3-pin plugs.
French Polynesia - The electric current in most hotels
is 110 or 220 volts, depending upon the specific
location. Visitors should bring adapters.
Fiji - Electricity in all resorts is 240 volts, 50 cycles AC.
Some resorts may have 110 volt outlets for use as well.
Temperature
Temperatures are recorded in Celsius. To convert to
an approximate Fahrenheit temperature, double the
Celsius and add 30.
Time and Date
• The 24-hour clock is used to denote timetables. To
convert to U.S. time for 13:00 and over, subtract 12
and add “pm.” For example, 18:00 is 6:00 pm.
• Dates are written with the day coming before the
month. For example, Christmas is 25-12-10.
Tipping
Australia - Hotels and restaurants do not add service
charges to your bill. In up-market restaurants, it is
usual to tip waiters up to 10% of the bill for good
service. However, tipping is always your choice.
New Zealand - Hotel porters are generally tipped a
small amount and for exceptional service in restaurants,
you can add 10% to the bill. There are no service
charges added to bills.
French Polynesia - Tipping is not customary or
expected in Tahitian culture. However, tipping is
always welcome for exemplary service.
Fiji - Tipping is not widely practiced and is at
your discretion.
Packing for Your Trip
Check with your airline for luggage weight restrictions,
as many local carriers have their own rules.
Clothing
Temperatures can fluctuate, so be prepared to dress
in layers.
Australia - Australia is a relaxed and casual place.
The rule for most establishments is enclosed
footwear.’ A jacket may be required in some
nightclubs and restaurants. Comfortable shoes
are a must for hiking through national parks.
New Zealand - Informal (smart casual) dress is
acceptable on most occasions in New Zealand
and is in fact quite appropriate given the relaxed
lifestyle. Men are generally not expected to wear
suits and ties except in a few of the more exclusive
bars and restaurants in major towns.
French Polynesia - The climate and lifestyle of the
islands calls for casual and comfortable clothing.
Pack loose-fitting, natural fabrics and plenty of
shorts. For dinner, casual
slacks and sport shirts are the best choice for men;
cool sundresses for women.
Fiji - Visitors need light casual clothing suitable for
the tropical climates of Fiji, although during the dry
season nighttime temperatures can drop and a light
sweater may be needed. Revealing clothing is
frowned upon in public places, particularly in villages.
TO-DO LIST
• Travel with credit cards and an ATM card.
• Keep a record of important numbers for credit cards,
ATM cards and travelers checks in a separate location.
• Make two copies of your bank cards, credit cards,
driver’s license, passport and return airline ticket.
Keep one at home, and bring one with you.
• Leave an itinerary with a close family member
or neighbor.
• If you are going to a warm destination, bring strong
sunscreen and a hat. Excessive sun exposure has
ruined many vacations.
• If traveling with young children, take along play
activities for the airport and plane ride.
• Medications, jewelry and other valuables should be
hand-carried, not placed in checked luggage.
• Place your airline tickets and other valuables in your
hotel’s safe deposit box.
• Make sure your luggage has identification both
inside and out.
• Pack the following items: voltage converter and
adapter plugs; calculator (for converting currency);
camera with extra film or memory cards, battery
and charger; walking shoes and rain gear.
• Check with your airline several days before your
departure date to reconfirm your flight. Do the
same before your return flight.
• Call your airline before leaving for the airport to
check on any last minute delays.
• Due to increased security, arrive at the airport early.
TAHITI/PAPEETE
“Queen of the Pacific”
The beautiful island of Tahiti, encircled by black sand beaches
and a crown of steep majestic peaks, is the largest and most
diverse of the Polynesian islands. The mountainous interior is
adorned with deep valleys, clear streams, and high waterfalls,
all bathed in the green iridescence of Mother Nature’s light.
The coastal lands, edged with a rugged coastline, are home to
fields of tropical flowers and most of the island’s population.
Some aspects of Tahiti are quite modern, such as its unique
entertainment events, animated nightlife and museums.
Papeete, translated as the “water basket,” was once a
gathering place where Tahitians came to fill their calabashes
with fresh water. Now the invigorating capital city and
gateway of the country, it boasts world-class resorts and spas,
fine dining, nightclubs, vibrant markets, pearl shops and
boutiques. Your options in Tahiti are as broad as your
imagination, whether it is natural, nautical or cultural.
MOOREA
“The Magical Island”
Moorea, soaring out of the ocean in an explosion of green
velvet pinnacles, has always been the choice of painters and
writers. A wide, shallow lagoon surrounds the mountains
where threads of waterfalls tumble down fern-softened cliffs.
The island is circled with simple pastel-painted villages,
surrounded by hibiscus gardens and exotic birds. ATV tours
are a popular way to take in natural wonders such as these
and other pursuits, like whale watching and hiking the
legendary Opunohu and Cook Bays. For those less
adventurous, Moorea’s white sand beaches are relaxing,
laid-back alternatives.
The name Bora Bora brings thoughts of jumping off life’s
treadmill and moving to paradise. This romantic isle is
surrounded by a world-famous blue lagoon that resembles
something outside of nature. The overwater bungalows are
truly “close to nature,” as guests can roll out of bed into a
refreshing swim or any other watersport. All this is situated
beneath Mt. Pahia and Mt. Otemanu, two green peaks that
beckon hikers.
Taha’a is known as the “Vanilla Island” because the air is filled
with the aroma from its many vanilla plantations. The Taha’a
lagoon is a giant natural aquarium of colorful fish and coral
gardens where you can feed rays, swim with dolphins or cruise
in a catamaran. Visit one of its many pearl farms, or explore one
of the secluded islets (called motu) – often the perfect spot to
picnic under a coconut tree, snorkel or relax with a book.
guarantee against failure of any such suppliers. Accordingly,
participant(s) agree to seek remedies directly with the supplier and
not to hold Operator, its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates and/or
representatives (collectively “Operator Parties”) liable, in the
third party technology systems; piracy or terrorism). Participant(s)
acknowledge that the Operator Parties have not made any
representations or promises with respect to the trip except as
expressly set forth in the Operator’s literature, unless such
agreement is in writing and signed by an officer of Operator. At
any time, the Operator may decline, for any reason, any person
as a participant on a trip (or option) whereupon the Operator’s
only obligation shall be to refund such person that portion of any
prepayment allocable to the unused services.
INTERMEDIARY DISCLOSURE: No joint venture, partnership,
employment, agency or fiduciary relationship exists between you
and Operator or American Express as a result of your use of our
travel services. In our role as a travel agent Operator acts as an
independent contractor. Operator assists you in finding travel
suppliers and making arrangements that meet your individual
needs. We consider various factors in identifying travel suppliers
to you and recommending specific itineraries. We want you to be
aware that certain suppliers pay us commissions as well as
incentives for reaching sales targets or other goals, and from time
to time may also provide incentives to our travel counselors.
Certain suppliers may also provide compensation to us for various
marketing and administrative services that we perform for them,
such as granting them access to our marketing channels,
participating in marketing programs and supporting technology
initiatives. In addition, our parent company, American Express,
receives compensation from suppliers when customers use the
American Express ® Card or other American Express products to
pay for supplier products and services. From time to time we may
enter into other business relationships with suppliers and these
arrangements, including levels and types of compensation and
incentives we receive, are subject to change. In identifying
suppliers and recommending itineraries, we may consider a
number of factors, including supplier availability your preferences
and any agreements we have to book travel. The relationships we
have with suppliers may also influence the suppliers we identify
and the itineraries we recommend.
TERMS OF PURCHASE: Please note that separate terms and
conditions dictated by the applicable supplier will apply to your
reservation and purchase of products and services. You agree to
abide by such terms and conditions, including payment of all
amounts when due and compliance with the applicable supplier’s
policies, rules and restrictions regarding availability and use of
fares, products and services. You understand that any violation of
any such supplier’s terms, conditions, policies, rules or restrictions
may result in (a) your forfeiting any monies paid for such
reservation or purchase, (b) cancellation of your reservation or
purchase, (c) your being denied access to any flights, hotels or
other products or services, and (d) Operator debiting your account
for any costs Operator incurs as a result of such violation. You
acknowledge that you will be responsible for all charges, fees,
duties, taxes and assessments arising out of your purchase of the
travel products from Operator.
CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY: The right to a refund is
limited if a participant changes plans prior to or after the trip is
taken. All requests for refunds must be submitted (certified mail,
return receipt requested) in writing through the booking agent to
the Operator or directly with Operator if the booking was made
directly with Operator except in the case of pre-trip which can be
done over the phone. Operator shall then process your refund and
may retain a $50 processing fee if a refund is given. All appropriate
receipts/vouchers and documentation must accompany the refund
request. No refund will be made for package features the
participant opts not to use. “No show” penalties could be up to
100% of the package or component costs. The rights and remedies
made available herein are in addition to any others available under
applicable law. However, Operator offers refunds under this
agreement with the express understanding that endorsement of a
refund by participant(s) constitutes a waiver of any such additional
rights and remedies against Operator. See “Cancel for Any Reason
Travel Protection Plan” section below for details on our Cancel For
Any Reason Waiver.
