About The Foundation The Wood’s Homes Foundation plays a key role in the strategic philanthropic investment in Wood’s Homes. It seeks out and encourages individual and corporate donor support and stewards funds generated through careful investment practices and standards of accountability that contribute to donor confidence and satisfaction. The Work of Wood’s Homes Youth learns new skills to cope with frustration By Erin Henricksen-Ireland (School Support Counsellor) I’ve been with Wood’s Homes for almost five years and work at George Wood, a specialized learning centre on the Bowness campus. My career here has provided me with the opportunity to work with many amazing and memorable young people from across the country, and has provided me with a ton of stories to share. working on. He asked what would happen if he broke a chair, so I let him know that he would need to pay for it if he did. Now, this was no ordinary chair! It was the comfy reading chair in our library … the one that EVERY student wants to sit on during the day. Well, he thought about it for a few minutes and then … he broke the chair! One of the most memorable people I have ever helped support is a young man who came to us from the Northwest Territories. Greg arrived in my high school classroom during my first year at Wood’s Homes. Greg was a big boy for only being 14, and at first glance could be intimidating. He came from a family heavily affected by drugs and alcohol and came to us hoping to not only help himself, but his mother as well. He arrived at school with poor academic and social skills and was impulsive. I remember one day in particular - he was frustrated with his peers and wasn’t sure how to handle what was going on, so he let me know that he wanted to break something. I told him that it was up to him how he dealt with frustration, and encouraged him to use some of the coping skills we had been A few months later, Greg came to school and handed me an envelope filled with money he had saved in order to buy the school a new chair. We trotted off to IKEA and not long afterward he was assembling the new chair. To this day (three years later) that chair is still the one that every student wants to sit on. The chair ended up being the last thing that Greg ever broke at the school. He learned new skills to help him cope with his feelings, and he was able to use these skills on a regular basis. Greg worked hard at school and built great relationships with staff and other young people all over the Bowness campus. He successfully completed his treatment at Wood’s Homes and earned several high school credits at the same time. Greg moved back home where he lived in a very supportive foster home. This is no ordinary chair. The special thing here is that Greg would call the classroom at least once a month, and did so for more than a year. He let me know that his mother had just finished treatment and was now sober. He, too, was working hard at staying sober, he’d found full-time work and was planning to get his high school diploma. It’s not every day that someone gets the opportunity to make a real impact on a child’s life, but it is definitely not every day that a child stays in touch to let us know that things are better.
