Welcome to the Spring/Summer issue <strong>of</strong> Network, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> magazine for alumni, faculty, students, staff,<br />
and friends. We acknowledge your commitment, compassion, and integrity<br />
especially during National Nurses Week May 6 –12. The nursing shortage<br />
has been a hot topic in the media and no doubt also in your conversations these<br />
past few months. As a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s Grassroots Committee, I have been actively<br />
communicating the need for investing in the future <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> as well as the need to strengthen our foundation. If you haven’t contacted your<br />

brought her to the Capitol in January where she is an intern<br />
for Nurses<br />

Kristin Berlin personifies passion. She’s passionate about<br />
nursing, passionate about politics, passionate about<br />
leadership. Her fast-talking, east-coast clip and intense<br />
demeanor has earned her the nickname “CT,” for Connecticut,<br />
her home state. It suits her: short, to the point. But watch<br />
out. There is something special about this fiery easterner and<br />
it doesn’t take long in her presence to find out she is one<br />
powerful advocate for nurses.<br />
In 1999, the 33-year-old former staff nurse came to <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
and met with Ruth Lindquist, Ph.D, Division Director <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, to discuss the possibilities <strong>of</strong> graduate<br />
school. That conversation started Kristin down the road<br />
toward a Master’s degree in nursing with a focus in health-<br />
to Rep. Karen Clark, an 11-term representative, herself a<br />
13-year veteran nurse. Sitting in a crowded <strong>of</strong>fice filled with<br />
papers, drafts <strong>of</strong> legislation, and resource materials piled on<br />
every available surface, Kristin discusses upcoming legislation<br />
with Clark. Her work with Clark is clearly providing opportunities<br />
to take new avenues on her educational journey. “I’ve<br />
got my hands in a gazillion different pots at the legislature,”<br />
Kristin explained later on a rare break in the basement cafeteria<br />
<strong>of</strong> the State Office Building. Among the bills they are<br />
working on is “a nickel-a-drink tax.” Kristin explained, “this<br />
bill will help fund aftercare service for individuals who have<br />
completed a chemical dependency treatment program. It is<br />
also important because we are looking at ways to increase<br />

funding for sober high schools in the state. Our youth are at<br />
such risk.”<br />
In a special meeting with about 20 high school students as<br />
well as several others who had come to the Capitol in support<br />
<strong>of</strong> GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) lobby day,<br />
Kristin listened intently as Clark addressed the concerns <strong>of</strong><br />
gay and lesbian students. Clark was introduced as the longest<br />
serving, openly lesbian state representative<br />
in the country. ‘The politics <strong>of</strong><br />

“Kristin brings both enthusiasm and intellectual integrity to<br />
her internship with me. She has taken on several tough bills;<br />
done thorough research, well beyond what was expected;<br />
faithfully engaged the community stakeholders I’ve asked her<br />
to bring into the process; and always seems refreshingly eager<br />
to learn. Kristin also contributes first-hand knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
health-care issues from a nursing perspective at every opportunity.<br />
I found that brings valuable credibility and informed<br />
insight I need,” Clark added. It is clear that Clark enjoys<br />
working with Kristin. She also predicts another path that<br />
Kristin could possibly take. “I hope I can count her as a colleague<br />
here at the legislature someday soon. She would make<br />
an exceptional candidate for public <strong>of</strong>fice and I know she has<br />
the determination and commitment it takes to win.”<br />
Kristin’s supervisor, Carol O’Boyle, Ph.D., R.N., Epidemiology<br />
Supervisor in Infection Control at the <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Health (MDH), explained another aspect <strong>of</strong><br />
Kristin’s educational process. “Kristin is working at the<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health on a study to identify the<br />
staffing requirements for infection control nurses in U.S.<br />
health-care facilities. Her interest in staffing issues for nurses<br />
in the clinical setting influenced her willingness to participate<br />
in this study to describe the time-task relationships for a specific<br />
nursing specialty. Kristin is passionate about the nursing<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession and committed to identifying methods to improve<br />
the working conditions <strong>of</strong> nurses. I believe she will continue<br />
in both her education and in her career to be an advocate for<br />
nursing,” said O’Boyle.<br />

National Nurses Week<br />
May 6–12<br />
Kristin believes strongly that mentoring and leadership play<br />
an important part in the education and socialization process <strong>of</strong><br />
nursing and the learning journey. She acknowledged one <strong>of</strong> her<br />
mentors along that journey. “The person who got me hooked<br />
into politics is Sally Cohen, Ph.D. at Yale <strong>University</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>. I would not be here today if she had not mentored<br />
and believed in me.”<br />
As an intern, Kristin says her biggest challenge is time.<br />
“Most <strong>of</strong> the bills I have been working on have been healthcare<br />
related. I don’t have the time to accomplish what I want to<br />
accomplish. I have to leave things and pick them up the next<br />
week.” That’s frustrating, she admits. Yet she will be the first to<br />
say, “it’s been a learning experience, especially learning about<br />
state government. The politics <strong>of</strong> politics is powerful. Nurses<br />
have the power to be able to access that power and facilitate the<br />
power they have,” Kristin believes. “Yesterday was a great day.”<br />
The previous day, Nurses Day at the Capitol, Kristin<br />
attended a legislative briefing and committee hearing on a senate<br />
bill that relates to mandatory overtime for nurses. “It was<br />
empowering to see the power and passion they have,” she<br />
added. “Nurses were standing up for their pr<strong>of</strong>ession and as<br />
human beings.” The nurses, for the most part, were representatives<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Association (MNA). “The<br />
big issue was we (as nurses) can’t make the decisions about<br />
when we leave after a scheduled shift, and yet we have people’s<br />
lives in our hands all the time. Senator Anderson and the<br />
others who testified clearly got their point across!”<br />
“Nurses have to become more politically savvy,” Kristin said.<br />
“There are approximately 55,000 nurses in <strong>Minnesota</strong>. This is<br />
not just about MNA. This is about nurses who are not represented.<br />
Every nurse should have business cards. It is important<br />
for our society to realize that nurses function in many different<br />
capacities and settings.”<br />
W<br />
“ e have to invest in health care, especially the Academic<br />
Health Center in the nursing pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Education plays<br />
a large role in economic development and workforce issues in<br />
this state. We have to find ways that we can work together, as<br />
hospitals, nurses, unions, and health-care institutions. The<br />
health-care industry needs to take a larger responsibility in figuring<br />
out how to staff as well; this is a systems issue. They need<br />
to think outside the box. And, it’s not just the health-care institutions.<br />
It’s everyone’s issue,” Kristin stressed.<br />
Kristin is a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> grassroots<br />
committee that is actively vocal about the impact <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
Biennial Budget (see the Dean’s Column on page 23).<br />
She has spoken to faculty, students, staff, and anyone who will<br />
listen about the nursing issue in relationship to the budget.<br />
Where will the next road take this passionate, politically motivated<br />
nurse? Will there be signs directing her: doctorate in<br />
nursing?<br />
“Absolutely,” comes the immediate answer. “I’d like to stay<br />
in <strong>Minnesota</strong>. I’m going to stay on at the legislature in the <strong>of</strong>fsession<br />
as a volunteer. I would like to gain some real world<br />
experience in policy, leadership, management, and advocacy,<br />
and bring that knowledge back to the doctorate program at the<br />
U <strong>of</strong> M.”<br />
Once again, Kristin Berlin, (soon to be) M.S.N., B.S.N. personifies<br />
passion: Passion about nursing, passion about politics,<br />
passion about leadership. •

Less Pain<br />

Scientific journals as well as the national popular press are<br />
reporting the findings <strong>of</strong> Janis Gerkensmeyer, Ph.D.,<br />
M.S.N., R.N., Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>. Gerkensmeyer’s research is on the effects <strong>of</strong> music<br />
on newborns (neonates) undergoing painful procedures, such<br />
as circumcision and needle sticks.<br />
Gerkensmeyer is looking forward to the research findings<br />
being published this year in the prestigious Journal <strong>of</strong> Pediatric<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>. Articles have already appeared in Good Housekeeping<br />
(Oct. 2000); Baby Talk & Parenting, (Oct. 2000); and Fit<br />
Pregnancy, (Dec./Jan. 2001), as well as the Indianapolis Spotlight<br />
Newspaper (May 17, 2000); Sigma Theta Tau’s “Excellence in<br />
Practice,” and Inside IUPUI, a newsletter for Indiana <strong>University</strong>,<br />
Purdue <strong>University</strong>, Indianapolis, (Sept. 21, 2000).<br />
The study, a three-year process, was conducted while<br />
Gerkensmeyer was a clinical nurse specialist at a pediatric<br />
hospital in Indiana and a faculty member <strong>of</strong> Indiana <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, Indianapolis. Principal investigator <strong>of</strong><br />
the study was Betsy A. Joyce, Ed.D., M.S.N., C.P.N.P., associate<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor, along with Juanita Fogel Keck, D.N.S., R.N.,<br />
now retired as associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Indiana.<br />
Results <strong>of</strong> the findings, according to the abstract, suggest<br />
that “music may be an effective intervention to aid with pain<br />
relief for neonates undergoing circumcision. Analyses suggest<br />
that identifiable patterns<br />

Gerkensmeyer hopes a<br />
similar study with a larger<br />
sample size will be conducted. Only 40 babies were used in<br />
the initial study.<br />
Gerkensmeyer expressed surprise at the findings. “We<br />
found significance in terms <strong>of</strong> even music alone decreased<br />
the heart rate as well as the oxygen level <strong>of</strong> newborns,”<br />
Gerkensmeyer said, adding, “these interventions are useful in<br />
decreasing the pain experience by newborns. This is a common<br />
experience in which parents can relate.”<br />
Although the study was done with two groups—neonates<br />
experiencing circumcision and needle stick—“the most<br />
remarkable findings seemed to be with the circumcision<br />
group and the effects <strong>of</strong> music,” Gerkensmeyer said.<br />
It’s not just any kind <strong>of</strong> soothing music that was used.<br />
Specifically, one tape and one CD were utilized in the study.<br />

Heartbeat Music Therapy,” were produced by Terry<br />
Woodford, Colorado Springs, CO, a leading authority on<br />
pre-recorded music therapy for children.<br />
Tunes including familiar children’s lullabies, such as<br />
“London Bridge,” “Are You Sleeping,” “Lullaby and Good<br />
Night,” and “Hush Little Baby,” are set to the rhythm <strong>of</strong> a<br />
heartbeat which has a soothing effect on the listener.<br />
According to Betsy A. Joyce, quoted in the Sigma Theta<br />
Tau “Excellence in Practice” article, “there are many<br />
advantages to using music as therapy, including the cost effectiveness.<br />
Nurses don’t need a physician’s order for this therapy<br />
and parents can continue to use music at home. This study<br />
supports the tremendous potential for music to contribute to<br />
pain relief in other medical procedures.” •<br />

Linda Chlan, Ph.D., R.N., Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>, believes that most people can associate something<br />
pleasant with music. Linda will combine her love <strong>of</strong><br />
music with research <strong>of</strong> the therapeutic benefits <strong>of</strong> music as the<br />
first recipient <strong>of</strong> the A. Marilyn Sime Faculty Research<br />
Fellowship.<br />
This past Fall, Linda received the two-year fellowship,<br />
which has a 50 percent appointment in the Center for Spirituality<br />
and Healing, sponsor <strong>of</strong> the fellowship. It provides<br />
faculty with protected research time to develop a research area<br />
specific to complementary therapies. Linda will use the time<br />
to research the therapeutic effects <strong>of</strong> music on patients on<br />
ventilators.<br />
As a former critical care staff nurse, Linda cared for numerous<br />
ventilated patients. The traditional method <strong>of</strong> managing<br />
anxiety in these patients is by administering a variety <strong>of</strong> intravenous<br />
sedation medications. These medications had many<br />
side effects and Linda found that sometimes the patients<br />
became more anxious and agitated. She wondered what else<br />
could be done.<br />
Her answer came while she was pursing her Master’s degree<br />
in nursing during the early 1990s. She found research that<br />
showed that listening to music is effective in reducing anxiety<br />
and promoting relaxation in patients in coronary care units.<br />
“I wondered if it could have the same benefit for patients receiving<br />
mechanical ventilation,” said Linda. And thus began her<br />

Linda defines “relaxing<br />
music” as music with 60–80 beats per minute, slow flowing<br />
rhythms and restrained dynamics, no words, simple composition,<br />
and few instruments. “We always first assess a patient’s<br />
personal music preference to avoid playing music that could<br />
conjure up bad memories,” she says.<br />
While the Sime fellowship provides Linda the necessary time<br />
to focus on research, additional funding was necessary to support<br />

time on ventilators, and<br />
length <strong>of</strong> time in the<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships<br />
Donna Zimmaro Bliss, Ph.D., R.N., and Barbara Leonard,<br />
Ph.D., R.N., were appointed pr<strong>of</strong>essorships by Dean<br />
Sandra Edwardson during fall semester 2000.<br />
Dr. Bliss was named to the Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in Long Term<br />
Care <strong>of</strong> Elders, while Dr. Leonard was named to the<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in Long Term Care <strong>of</strong> Children and Youth.<br />

Dr. Bliss, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, joined the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong><br />
faculty in 1993 after completing postdoctoral studies at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> as a National Institute for <strong>Nursing</strong><br />
Research award recipient and a MAGEC fellow. She is the<br />
only nurse to date who has been awarded a highly competitive<br />
research grant from the American Federation for Aging<br />
Research. Her research program focuses on long term care<br />
problems common to elders, progressing from observational<br />
studies <strong>of</strong> the causes and prevalence <strong>of</strong> diarrhea and fecal<br />
incontinence to the efficacy <strong>of</strong> several interventions including<br />
dietary fiber. Most recently, she has been exploring skin<br />
problems associated with incontinence in nursing home residents.<br />
Dr. Bliss currently serves as an Associate Editor <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Research, is a member <strong>of</strong> the National Advisory<br />

application to NIH in May. That grant will enable her to test<br />
the acute effects <strong>of</strong> music intervention on serum measures <strong>of</strong><br />
stress in ventilated patients.<br />
Former and current <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> faculty members<br />
have helped Linda at various stages in her research career. She<br />
gives credit to Dr. Mariah Snyder, who was an early leader in<br />
the complementary therapies movement. “I am indebted to<br />
her vision in this area and for her willingness to be there for<br />
me when I first became interested in researching the effects <strong>of</strong><br />
music,” says Linda. Dr. Ruth Lindquist provided encouragement<br />
while Linda was pursuing her Master’s degree in<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>, and encouraged her to pursue a Ph.D. “She has been<br />
and still is an important mentor to me,” says Linda.<br />
Linda’s Ph.D. advisor was Dr. Marilyn Sime, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Emeritus, who donated $600,000 to establish the research<br />
fellowship program. According to Linda, Dr. Sime was an<br />
advisor in every sense <strong>of</strong> the word, providing the muchneeded<br />
support to her during her “sometimes arduous<br />
journey to obtaining my Ph.D.”<br />
There are many other people who were there for Linda<br />
during her educational pursuits and continue to be. Among<br />
them is <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Dean Sandy Edwardson. “I am<br />

Dr. Leonard, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, has been with the<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> since 1991. She transferred from the<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Public Health where<br />

nationwide. Dr. Leonard has pursued a focused research<br />
program into the long term care <strong>of</strong> children with special needs<br />
and has carefully integrated this work in meeting all three missions<br />
<strong>of</strong> research, education, and service. Dr. Leonard’s<br />
research is focused on developmental and behavioral outcomes<br />
<strong>of</strong> children with diabetes. She regularly consults and<br />
grateful for her early support <strong>of</strong> the Center for Spirituality<br />
and Healing and for her support <strong>of</strong> my Sime Faculty Fellowship,”<br />
says Linda.<br />
When Linda returns to her home at the end <strong>of</strong> the day, she<br />
finds support there as well. Her husband, James Grindle,<br />
and her cats, Spike and Mertz, share her love <strong>of</strong> music and are<br />
very supportive <strong>of</strong> her ambitions, she says. In her limited free<br />
time, Linda enjoys running and watching wildlife with her<br />
husband on their property in Lakeville.<br />
For Linda, music has always been an integral part <strong>of</strong> her<br />
life outside <strong>of</strong> work. Thanks to the Sime Faculty Research<br />
Fellowship, it is now an integral part <strong>of</strong> her work life<br />
as well. •<br />

The Long Term Care Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship fund was established<br />
in 1989 through the efforts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Foundation<br />
during the <strong>University</strong>’s last capital campaign. Led<br />
by an estate gift from Freda K. Parks, a 1932 nursing graduate,<br />

Nurse Practitioners: Expanding the Reach <strong>of</strong> Health Care<br />

Announcing the world premiere <strong>of</strong> the video, Nurse<br />
Practitioners: Expanding the Reach <strong>of</strong> Health Care, starring<br />
real nurse practitioners, physicians, and others in the front lines <strong>of</strong><br />
health care. No, it will not be showing in a theater near you, but this<br />
informative video is available to anyone who would like to learn about<br />
nurse practitioners.<br />
The main purpose <strong>of</strong> this video is to answer some basic questions<br />
about the role <strong>of</strong> the nurse practitioner (N.P.). Ideal audiences include<br />
high-school students, nursing students, clinic administrators, physicians,<br />
and the general public. Graduate nursing students have also<br />
found that this video helps to stimulate discussion regarding the role <strong>of</strong><br />
the N.P.<br />
The first version <strong>of</strong> this video, released in 1996, was developed by<br />
representatives from all <strong>of</strong> the N.P. programs in <strong>Minnesota</strong>. Although<br />
the video was well received, it was felt that we needed to update some<br />
<strong>of</strong> the information and should show a broader representation <strong>of</strong> the<br />
faculty, and organizations. Contributions <strong>of</strong> $250,000 were<br />
matched by the <strong>University</strong>’s Permanent <strong>University</strong> Fund. The<br />
account has now grown to over one million dollars. Growth <strong>of</strong><br />
the fund makes it possible for the SoN to honor two faculty<br />
members with pr<strong>of</strong>essorships. Tenured faculty members were<br />
nominated by their peers and appointed on the basis <strong>of</strong> the<br />
recommendation <strong>of</strong> a special nomination screening<br />
task force. •<br />

Some topics covered in the video include history <strong>of</strong> the N.P., educational<br />
background, scope <strong>of</strong> practice, rural health, independent N.P.<br />
practice, rewards and challenges <strong>of</strong> N.P. practice, meeting<br />
health care needs, and more.<br />
Rural N.P. project coordinators from each <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Minnesota</strong> schools<br />
will soon have copies <strong>of</strong> the video to make available to students and<br />
faculty. There are also plans to have the video on public access cable<br />

It began as an ordinary day. Checking voice mail, then<br />
answering messages. But one call changed the course <strong>of</strong> her<br />
day. A private, behind-the-scenes activity was about to<br />
go public.<br />
“I went for a long walk.” That’s what Jean Kintgen Andrews<br />
did after learning she was a winner <strong>of</strong> a Virginia McKnight<br />
Binger Award in Human Service.<br />
“Beth wanted to celebrate immediately . . . but I was torn.<br />
I felt I should do this quietly,” says Andrews, a s<strong>of</strong>t-spoken<br />
woman whose gentle smile hints at a self-effacing humility.<br />
Andrews, a retired <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
in nursing, was <strong>of</strong>ficially recognized November 16, 2000 for 10<br />
years <strong>of</strong> volunteer service at the Center for Victims <strong>of</strong> Torture<br />
in Minneapolis. Beth Wickum, the center’s director <strong>of</strong> volunteer<br />
services, was the catalyst for Andrews’ award from<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong>’s largest foundation. “Her compassion, devotion<br />
and love for human beings make Jean an outstanding advocate<br />
for people who have suffered some <strong>of</strong> the worst cruelty. . . .”<br />
Wickum explains. It is no surprise, then, that Andrews’ efforts<br />
have been channeled towards “restoring the dignity <strong>of</strong> the<br />
human spirit,” the organization’s credo.<br />
The Center for Victims <strong>of</strong> Torture (CVT) is a private, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />
organization founded in 1985 to provide direct care to<br />
survivors <strong>of</strong> politically motivated torture and their families.<br />
The CVT was the first organization <strong>of</strong> its kind in the United<br />

States, and only the second in the world behind Helsinki.<br />
Over the years, the CVT has pioneered its comprehensive<br />
assessment and care programs, and gained worldwide respect.<br />
Andrews began volunteering at the center following her<br />
retirement in 1990. Within four years, she assumed responsibility<br />
as volunteer coordinator, directing the activities <strong>of</strong> about<br />
50 “befrienders” to carefully matched “clients.”<br />
The clients are people who have fled to the United States<br />
after enduring brutal treatment for their political beliefs. At<br />

Andrews assists with volunteer training and is very grateful<br />
for her nursing background when it comes to ethical issues and<br />
confidentiality. “Our clients were <strong>of</strong>ten leaders <strong>of</strong> their communities.<br />
Most are seeking asylum after fleeing persecution<br />
and torture.”<br />

assisting political refugees from Central America. Any victim<br />
<strong>of</strong> physical or emotional abuse was referred to the Center for<br />
Victims <strong>of</strong> Torture.<br />
Clients found the CVT <strong>of</strong>fered a non-clinical environment<br />
that was comforting and safe. Located in a modest, threestory<br />
house overlooking the Mississippi River in Minneapolis,<br />
the center provides outpatient services for approximately 150<br />
clients annually.<br />
Andrews is quick to note that as demand for service<br />
increases, the center’s focus will be forced to shift. “There<br />
will be more outreach in the schools, a closer relationship<br />
with the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service), and<br />
coordination <strong>of</strong> services with other centers.”<br />
Andrews’ indefatigable schedule includes at least a 25-hour<br />
week at the CVT. In addition, she is a favored support group<br />
facilitator at Chrysalis, a Minneapolis women’s center. “I lead<br />
groups for women over 40 and 55, and a self-worth group.<br />
The two-hour sessions run from five to eight weeks.”<br />
Inspired by a mentor in her Master’s degree program,<br />
Andrews says she is simply giving back what she received.<br />
“Marie Costello was forever young . . . always in tune with the<br />
younger people. <strong>Nursing</strong> was very important to her.” Her<br />
role model today, Andrews continues, is Margaret Rounds,<br />
a fellow CVT volunteer in her 80s. “I’m amazed by her<br />
energy, and her openness for everyone . . . regardless <strong>of</strong> their<br />

“selfless, although not a martyr . . . a woman for all seasons.”<br />
The same could be said for Andrews, who grew up in Chicago<br />
the only child <strong>of</strong> an advertising salesman and a mother<br />
who worked with industrial physicians. Motivated to do work<br />
in a “front-line” service area, Andrews graduated with a B.S.N.<br />
from St. Xavier <strong>University</strong>, an M.S.N. from DePaul <strong>University</strong>,<br />
and a Doctorate from Ohio State. In 1984, Andrews joined the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> faculty, initially directing the nursing<br />
consortium in northwest <strong>Minnesota</strong>. She came on campus in<br />
1980, teaching a graduate program for nurses who also aspired<br />
to teach.<br />
Throughout her nursing career, Andrews has lived her definition<br />
<strong>of</strong> compassion: “Not only having empathy, but taking action<br />
as a result <strong>of</strong> that empathy.” <strong>Nursing</strong> has provided her the tools<br />
to do that. She adds, “I think people underestimate what is involved<br />
in the practice <strong>of</strong> nursing... the skills and the intellect...<br />
Regrettably, it’s not a role that gets a lot <strong>of</strong> recognition.”<br />
Of course, Andrews admits feeling humbled and initially<br />
embarrassed by her McKnight Foundation award. However,<br />
she is pleased it has brought deserved recognition to her volunteers,<br />
and to the Center for Victims <strong>of</strong> Torture.<br />
Not surprisingly too, the associated $7500 cash award has<br />
been given away. “I was getting along fine before I got it, so<br />
I decided to invest it in human rights causes.” Andrews is content<br />
quietly making a difference one life at a time. Those whose<br />
lives she has touched are the true winners. •<br />

Albert Einstein was a progressive thinker. His theory <strong>of</strong> relativity<br />
revolutionized scientific thought. He loved classical<br />
music, played the violin, and had a pr<strong>of</strong>ound compassion<br />
for people who were politically or economically oppressed. It<br />
is not surprising, then, that deep in the heart <strong>of</strong> a trio <strong>of</strong><br />
Georgian brick buildings on the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
St. Paul campus is an understated woman <strong>of</strong> conviction who<br />
references Einstein and lives his philosophy.<br />
Cocooned in a yellow-brick <strong>of</strong>fice that was once a technology<br />
shop, Michele Schermann, R.N., ’96 SoN, is Extension<br />
Educator for the Farm Safety and Health Program housed in<br />
the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering building at 1390<br />
Eckles Avenue in St. Paul. Schermann has been a member <strong>of</strong><br />

career path includes a degree in horticulture, a retail fabric<br />
business, custom home furnishings, and her entry into nursing.<br />

horticulture and<br />
health care. As coinvestigator<br />
on a<br />
$450,000, three-year<br />
grant, Schermann is working with Hmong farm families in a<br />
seven-county metro area to address the health and safety<br />

Theater—it stimulates the senses, eliciting imagery <strong>of</strong><br />
brilliant Broadway plays, rousing musicals, and haunting<br />
drama. An art form usually associated with entertainment, theater<br />
is historically a communications tool. In rural <strong>Minnesota</strong> communities<br />
today, theater is helping farm families cope with the haunting<br />
drama <strong>of</strong> everyday life.<br />
Farm Alarm: Coping With Stress is a 70-minute theatrical<br />
production workshop that portrays the daily lives <strong>of</strong> two fictional<br />
farm families. Seven scenes skillfully weave humor with the serious<br />
consequences <strong>of</strong> stress on the health and safety <strong>of</strong> farm<br />
families. At the end <strong>of</strong> each performance, actors return to the<br />
stage to participate with the audience in a problem-solving discussion.<br />
Led by a facilitator, dialogue is enhanced by a panel <strong>of</strong> local<br />
service providers, such as clergy, social workers, and lending<br />
agents.<br />
To date, there have been 31 Farm Alarm performances, with an<br />
average <strong>of</strong> 145 attendees at each workshop.<br />
Although the original targeted audience <strong>of</strong> Farm Alarm was<br />
farm families in the Upper Midwest, the workshop is now being<br />
marketed as an educational tool for health-care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals,<br />
extension education, and agricultural business throughout the<br />
country.<br />
Michele Schermann, R.N., <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Extension<br />
Educator, reports that the sustainability <strong>of</strong> the workshops has been<br />
encouraging. Twenty-five productions have been funded through<br />
local community organizing efforts. The initial six workshops were<br />
funded by a Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture grant. In fact, she notes<br />
proudly, the 1998 needs assessment prompting the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Farm Alarm venue originated from a <strong>network</strong> <strong>of</strong> nurses in<br />
the Red River Valley and Meeker County. Schermann is writing a<br />
grant proposal to evaluate the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the program in<br />
different regions <strong>of</strong> the state over the next three years.<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> this under-served population. The idea for the grant,<br />
Schermann says, stemmed from two watershed opportunities.<br />
One was to serve on an advisory committee to evaluate farm<br />
safety curriculum for elementary students. The other was an<br />
invitation to attend a safety day for immigrant farmers, hosted<br />
by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> at their Rosemount facility. It<br />
was the first program <strong>of</strong> its kind to include Hmong farmers.<br />

The Hmong (pronounced<br />
Mung) people are one <strong>of</strong> the oldest people <strong>of</strong> Asia, originating<br />
in what is now Central China more than 4,000 years ago.<br />
Over thousands <strong>of</strong> years, Hmong people migrated throughout<br />
Southeast Asia, entering what is now northern Vietnam, Laos,<br />
Thailand, and Burma in the early 19th century. During the<br />
Vietnam War, thousands <strong>of</strong> Hmong fled refugee camps in<br />
Thailand and eventually resettled in the United States. Today,<br />
the Twin Cities Hmong community numbers almost<br />
80,000—the second largest Hmong population in the United<br />
States next to Fresno, California.<br />
Schermann learned that Hmong society in Asia was largely<br />
agrarian, and that the Hmong cultural history is an oral one.<br />
It wasn’t until French missionaries assigned written letters to<br />
the Hmong language in the 1950s that the language was documented.<br />
As a result, many Hmong persons in <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
speak the language fluently, but may not be able to read or<br />
write Hmong. The challenge, therefore, in the area <strong>of</strong> safety<br />
and health, Schermann explains, is to develop culturally and<br />
linguistically appropriate guidelines.<br />
Utilizing the resources <strong>of</strong> a Hmong liaison coordinator,<br />
Schermann’s project will evaluate existing farm safety practices<br />
within the Hmong family/community, and create<br />
methodology for developing new guidelines. “Our goal is to<br />
end with a recipe usable by anyone worldwide who wants to<br />
apply the methodology to their needs.”<br />
To determine what is culturally and linguistically relevant,<br />
Schermann will evaluate family dynamics, the relationship<br />
<strong>of</strong> work to children and parents, the way parents view children,<br />
and how the family comes together as a team. The<br />
project will also define specific tasks, how they are done, and<br />
differences among social skills. The Hmong way <strong>of</strong> life,<br />
Schermann notes, emphasizes the importance <strong>of</strong> group over<br />
individual need. This is opposite to the American emphasis on<br />
the individual and individual decision-making.<br />
The current North American Guidelines for Children’s<br />
Agricultural Tasks were established by a blue-ribbon team<br />
from North America. Listing 62 tasks, the guidelines identify<br />
the steps to accomplishing an activity, the related hazards,<br />
adult responsibilities, and recommendations for supervision.<br />
“Their failing,” Schermann believes, “is the assumption<br />
that all farm families descended from Northern Europe. All<br />
graphics,” she adds, “unabashedly depict Caucasians. This<br />
oversight excludes the many diverse cultures woven into<br />
America’s demographic tapestry.”<br />
Schermann plans to change that. Working under the guidance<br />
<strong>of</strong> John M. Shutske, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering,<br />
Schermann’s trailblazing project will demonstrate that health<br />
and safety issues can be addressed for Z cultures, including the<br />
politically and economically oppressed. The results may not<br />
be immediately quantifiable, but most importantly, EVERY-<br />
ONE COUNTS!<br />

UThe experience <strong>of</strong> a first clinical is told by Katie M. Dinndorf,<br />
a first-year nursing student. The first clinical experience is in<br />
community-based, non-traditional settings. Students interact with<br />
essentially healthy people, practicing their interpersonal communications<br />
skills, conducting health assessments, and using teaching<br />
interventions to promote health.<br />
The clinical experience includes five weeks with children in schoolbased<br />
settings and five weeks with older adults in assisted living and<br />
retirement community settings. As part <strong>of</strong> the clinical experience at<br />
Friendship Village in Bloomington, a Wellness Clinic is provided by<br />
the students under the direction <strong>of</strong> their clinical instructor, Christine<br />
Mueller, Ph.D., R.N. Students evaluate blood pressure, pulse, vision,<br />
hearing, memory, nutritional health, safety, exercise and activity<br />
tolerance, medications, risks for heart attack and osteoporosis.<br />

One Student’s Perspective<br />

The first thing I thought when I heard the word clinical,<br />
was that I was excited to get some experience out in the<br />
“real world”—not sit in lecture and wonder what it would<br />
be like to actually apply what I was learning. I was enthusiastic<br />
about talking with an elderly person at my clinical at<br />
Friendship Village because I’ve always enjoyed listening to<br />
their stories about things I have not experienced. I volunteered<br />
at Fairview with the Watchful Companion program.<br />
We went into the patient’s rooms (young and old) to keep<br />
them company. During this volunteer experience, I talked<br />
with many elderly persons. I find most elderly people are<br />
happy and very humorous, which<br />
is the opposite <strong>of</strong> the stereotype<br />
<strong>of</strong> being crabby and unhappy.<br />
I enjoyed talking with them.<br />
The day I walked into my first<br />
clinical, I worried about who I was<br />
going to be assigned to. I was concerned<br />
that my client would not<br />
want to talk or I would <strong>of</strong>fend the<br />
person somehow. I did not know if<br />
they were conservative and might<br />
find something that my generation<br />
says or does <strong>of</strong>fensive.<br />
When I first entered my client’s<br />
room, I was relieved to find that she<br />
was an energetic woman in wonder- Katie Dinndorf<br />
ful health. I felt comfortable and happy during our<br />
conversations. I never felt that she was uncomfortable telling<br />
me things or that she was bored with our conversation. As we<br />
talked, I <strong>of</strong>fered her advice about what occurs physically as people<br />
age. It seemed that when something was going on with her<br />
body, she wondered if it was normal. She asked me if it was normal<br />
to urinate frequently during the night. I explained what<br />
happens to your bladder as you age, and she was relieved that it<br />
was a normal occurrence. I was also able to <strong>of</strong>fer my client<br />
youthful company, which she may not receive that <strong>of</strong>ten, living<br />
with others the same age.<br />
I was excited that first day, as well as anxious, because I did<br />
not know what to expect, what type <strong>of</strong> condition my client<br />
would be in, and how intact her memory would be. After the<br />
first day, I was very excited to return and talk with my client.<br />
I really enjoyed listening to her and talking with her about her<br />
current life as well as her past experiences.<br />
Overall, it was a wonderful experience. •<br />

Over 865 students, faculty,<br />
and staff received flu<br />
immunizations in December<br />
as a result <strong>of</strong> a collaborative project<br />
between the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>, Boynton Health Service,<br />
and the College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy.<br />
The project originated with an<br />
honors project from the pharmacy<br />
fraternity.<br />
Two clinics were held<br />
December 7, 2000. The first was<br />
hosted in the CHIP Lounge.<br />
The nursing students used the<br />
principles <strong>of</strong> public health nursing<br />
throughout the entire planning<br />
and implementation stages <strong>of</strong><br />
this innovative project. The<br />
students had experience with<br />
fund-raising and grant writing to<br />
secure resources for the clinic<br />
implementation.<br />
The shortage <strong>of</strong> flu vaccine<br />
The Densford Clinical Scholars Program is winding up its<br />
second year, and has exceeded expectations. The<br />
Program, established in 1998, links an Advanced Practice<br />
Nurse and a faculty member who share a mutual clinical<br />
interest. The intent is to combine the expertise <strong>of</strong> the two<br />
Clinical Scholars in clinical intervention projects targeted<br />
toward improving patient care. The Center is the vehicle for<br />
establishing the partnerships, facilitating funds, supporting<br />
individual projects, and creating a cadre <strong>of</strong> Clinical Scholars<br />
who can assist nurses and other caregivers in utilizing<br />
research.<br />
Topics that Scholars have studied include: Effects <strong>of</strong> an<br />
Opioid Taper Algorithm in Blood and Marrow Transplant<br />
(B.M.T.) Patients; Complementary Therapy Intervention<br />
in Pain Management; Attitudes Toward and Use <strong>of</strong><br />
Complementary/Alternative Therapies by Critical Care<br />
Nurses; and Improving Health Outcomes in Adults Newly<br />
Diagnosed with Diabetes. The Scholar Teams have worked<br />
together for the past two years.<br />
During this period, the Scholars have achieved a number <strong>of</strong><br />
significant accomplishments, including several publications,<br />
presentations at local and national meetings, and funding<br />
awards. Perhaps <strong>of</strong> greater importance is the impact on<br />
patient care that the projects have achieved through evidencebased<br />
practice changes; the development <strong>of</strong> care guidelines,<br />
standards and policies; continuing education opportunities;<br />
and expanding the staff nurses’ appreciation for and knowledge<br />
<strong>of</strong> research in the clinical setting. For this latter<br />
achievement, Sigma Theta Tau International (S.T.T.I.) has<br />

was a factor in our experience that had not been anticipated. Student teams had hands-on experience in making decisions<br />
regarding what would be possible with a limited amount <strong>of</strong> vaccine. Planning is underway for next year’s immunization clinic.<br />
Densford Clinical Scholars Program Exceeds Expectations<br />
recognized the Clinical Scholars with a regional Research<br />
Utilization Award. The Award was presented to Joanne Disch,<br />
Director <strong>of</strong> the Densford Center, at an S.T.T.I. Regional<br />
Forum in Philadelphia in March. The Densford Center will<br />
be hosting a celebratory breakfast for all participants at the<br />
Annual Research Day on April 23 in honor <strong>of</strong> the Scholars’<br />
work.<br />

CUPES Update<br />
CUPES Increases Community Sites for Student Learning<br />

The Community <strong>University</strong> Partner<br />
ship in Education and Service<br />
(CUPES) has recently<br />
increased the number <strong>of</strong> community<br />
sites where health pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />
students can have service learning<br />
experiences. The sites include two<br />
schools and three social service<br />
agencies. This school year we have<br />
graduate and undergraduate<br />
students, as well as residents from<br />
medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry,<br />
and public health.<br />
Andersen <strong>School</strong>s<br />
There are two elementary schools within one complex,<br />
Andersen Open and Andersen Elementary, with a total <strong>of</strong><br />
1300 students in grades K– 8. The students at Andersen are<br />
from diverse ethnic backgrounds, with most students representing<br />
Native American, Latino, and African American<br />
heritage. Health pr<strong>of</strong>essions students have opportunities to<br />
provide health education to staff, children, and their families,<br />
and also gain experience in the school-based clinic. These<br />
schools had no health education in classrooms until they<br />
became a CUPES site. Now every child receives health education<br />
from health pr<strong>of</strong>essions students. This site also has a<br />
dental clinic where Andersen children have access to dental<br />
care provided by dental hygiene students. Community Health<br />
Advocates also provide students with opportunities to bring<br />
health information into the homes <strong>of</strong> school families.<br />
Richard Green Central Park Elementary <strong>School</strong><br />
This site began in January 2001. The student enrollment<br />
in grades K–8 is 800 children with increasing numbers <strong>of</strong><br />
Spanish-speaking children entering the school. Green Central<br />
<strong>School</strong> came to us because the health needs for their children<br />
are great and they asked CUPES to provide programming<br />
similar to the Andersen <strong>School</strong>s. There is also a day care center<br />
and a community clinic in the building complex and health<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essions are involved in service learning opportunities in<br />
these areas as well.<br />

National Nurses Week<br />
May 6–12<br />
Minneapolis Youth Diversion Programs<br />
This site is a social service agency serving homeless youth<br />
and youth at risk for homelessness. There is a drop-in center<br />
where youth can be in a safe environment and access such services<br />
as health care in the on-site clinic, meals, mental health<br />
services, parenting support, and HIV/AIDS prevention information.<br />
Health pr<strong>of</strong>essions students can provide clinical care<br />
and health education in the many programs provided by this<br />
agency. This site provides students with opportunities to<br />
understand the larger context <strong>of</strong> the lives <strong>of</strong> homeless youth.<br />
Staff at Minneapolis Youth Diversion Programs tell us<br />
CUPES has brought badly needed health services to<br />
their agency.<br />
Centro<br />
This site provides comprehensive social services for<br />
Spanish-speaking children, adults, and seniors who have<br />
recently immigrated to the United States. Centro’s programming<br />
includes an on-site clinic, employment program, seniors<br />
services, HIV/STD prevention education, and maternal and<br />
child health services. Health pr<strong>of</strong>essions students provide<br />
health education and health care to one <strong>of</strong> this country’s most<br />
rapidly growing immigrant populations and they, in turn,<br />
benefit with increased health services.<br />
St. Joseph’s Home for Children<br />
This is CUPES newest site and it serves children and<br />
adolescents in need <strong>of</strong> protection and placement in an emergency<br />
shelter. Approximately 2500 children were served at<br />
St. Joseph’s last year. St. Joseph’s clinic provides comprehensive<br />
health services to its clients as well as those in Hennepin<br />
County’s Shelter Foster Care system. Health pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />
students are providing health care and health education to a<br />
population with extensive health service needs within the<br />
clinic, the residential treatment program, and the day<br />
treatment program.<br />
CUPES is also supporting and supervising the COACHES<br />
Mentoring Program and the production <strong>of</strong> a video entitled<br />
Enhancing the Cultural Competence <strong>of</strong> Health Care Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />
Who Work with American Indian Children and their Families.<br />

Beverly A. Fangel, a 1967 graduate <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>, has been awarded a 2000 Excellence<br />
in <strong>Nursing</strong> Award from Hennepin<br />
County Medical Center (HCMC). The<br />
award is given to HCMC nurses who excel<br />
in the areas <strong>of</strong> leadership, clinical skills,<br />
and customer focus.<br />
Karen Feldt, Ph.D., R.N., G.N.P.,<br />
Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, has been awarded<br />
the 2001 Merck/American Geriatrics<br />
Society (AGS) New Investigator Award.<br />
This award is funded through an educational<br />
grant from Merck U.S. Human<br />
Health and is presented to individuals<br />
whose research reflects new and relevant<br />
work in geriatrics. The award will be presented<br />
by Dr. Kenneth Brummel-Smith,<br />
the AGS president, at the annual meeting<br />
in May. Dr. Feldt is a member <strong>of</strong> the Center<br />
for <strong>Nursing</strong> Research on Elders.<br />
Ann Garwick, Ph.D., M.S., B.S.,<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, received word that the video<br />
entitled “Breathing a Word: Indian Stories<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Community News<br />
<strong>of</strong> Asthma,” was a runner-up in the Families<br />
with Special Needs division at the 33rd<br />
annual Media Awards Competition sponsored<br />
by the National Council on Family<br />
Relations. The video grew out <strong>of</strong> work by<br />
Garwick and Sally Auger with Native<br />
American youth in the Phillips Neighborhood<br />
<strong>of</strong> Minneapolis; and Allies Media/Art,<br />
a Native American owned video production<br />
company. It presents what it is like to live<br />
with asthma, depicting vivid stories for<br />
youth, families, and health-care providers.<br />
Janis Gerkensmeyer, Ph.D., R.N.,<br />
A.P.R.N., B.C., Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
received a citation for her poster at the<br />
18th Annual Scientific Meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Pain Society.<br />
Helen E. Hansen, Ph.D., M.A., A.B.,<br />
Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, co-investigator and<br />
principal investigator Catherine Borbas,<br />
Ph.D., Minneapolis Medical Research<br />
Institute, Minneapolis, have been funded<br />
for a project entitled “Improving Utilization<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ischemic Stroke Research.” Total<br />
projected funding is $1,564,642 for the<br />
period September 2000 through August<br />
2003. This study will assess the effectiveness<br />
<strong>of</strong> a model for accelerating the use <strong>of</strong><br />
evidence-based treatment guidelines for<br />
acute ischemic stroke in 24 urban and rural<br />
hospitals in <strong>Minnesota</strong>. The investigators<br />
from Minneapolis Medical Research Institute,<br />
Harvard Medical <strong>School</strong>, and the<br />
<strong>University</strong> and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> will<br />
test a hospital-based<br />
intervention to improve the<br />
quality <strong>of</strong> stroke care.<br />
Felicia Schanche Hodge,<br />

honored by The Friends<br />
<strong>of</strong> the National Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Hodge<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Research in recognition<br />
<strong>of</strong> her contributions to nursing<br />

Monisha Kannan and Sarah Westby, two<br />
baccalaureate students, presented their<br />
research at the 2001 National Conference<br />
on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) held<br />
at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kentucky in March.<br />
Kannan’s research is entitled “Uncertainty<br />
and Well-Being in Young Women Recently<br />
Diagnosed with Breast Cancer.” Westby’s<br />
research is entitled “Perceived Social Support<br />
and Complementary Therapies in<br />

Elizabeth Santas Kraatz, Ph.D.,<br />
A.O.C.N., R.N., Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, recently received the<br />
2000 Rising Rookie Award by the Metro<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> Chapter <strong>of</strong> the Oncology<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Society. Dr. Kraatz’s primary<br />
teaching and advising responsibilities are<br />
with master’s degree students in oncology.<br />
She also teaches courses in ethics and<br />
interpersonal communications. Dr. Kraatz<br />
is a 1985 graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>.<br />
Barbara Leonard, Ph.D., R.N.,<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, has been granted a sabbatical<br />
leave from August 2001 through July 2002<br />
to investigate the spirituality concerns <strong>of</strong><br />
children with chronic illness, disability,<br />
and life-threatening disease. She has been<br />
selected to participate in an intensive and<br />
highly selective program <strong>of</strong> the Center for<br />
Religious Development at the Weston<br />
Jesuit <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Theology in Cambridge,<br />
Massachusetts. In her absence, Helen<br />

Susan Johnson Warner, R.N., C.N.P.,<br />
Ed.D., a graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>,<br />
was featured in an article in the<br />
February 2001 issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
about her role in launching a baccalaureate<br />
nursing program at St. Cloud State<br />
<strong>University</strong> (SCSU). Approximately 150<br />
St. Cloud State students have listed nursing<br />
as their major. Warner previously<br />
served as associate nursing dean at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin, Eau Claire for<br />
two years as well as helping establish nursing<br />
education outreach sites during<br />
14 years at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> South Dakota<br />
before going to SCSU in 1999.<br />

Joanna Bernsten has been named Senior<br />

Lisa Fink, M.S.N., B.S.N., has been<br />
hired as an Associate Education Specialist.<br />
Linda Gerdner, Ph.D., M.A., B.S.N.,<br />
began Spring Semester 2001 as an<br />
Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. She is a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Center for <strong>Nursing</strong> Research on<br />
Elders. Her research interests are manage-
ment <strong>of</strong> agitation in persons with<br />
Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders<br />
and culturally sensitive care in persons<br />
with A.D.R.D. and their family caregivers.<br />
Beth Good, M.S., B.S.N., and Linda<br />
Hanninen, M.S., B.A., have been named<br />
Assistant Education Specialists.<br />
Joan Liaschenko, Ph.D., M.S., M.A.,<br />
B.S., Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, began her<br />
position in Spring Semester 2001. She is a<br />
doctoral nursing graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> California, San Francisco (1996)<br />
where she also received her master’s degree<br />
in Psychiatric <strong>Nursing</strong> (1989). Among her<br />
research interests are nursing ethics, practices,<br />
humanities, philosophy, psychiatric,<br />
and home-care nursing.<br />

Carol O’Boyle, Ph.D., M.S. who<br />

Health in 1991 and her Ph.D. in 1998 at<br />
the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, has joined the faculty<br />
as an Education Specialist.<br />

Lynn Vargo has joined the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

the new Associate Development Officer<br />
working with Laurel Mallen, President <strong>of</strong><br />
the SoN Foundation. His role will be to<br />
secure major gifts on behalf <strong>of</strong> Campaign<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong>, assist with donor relations, and<br />
coordinate the annual giving programs.<br />
Before coming to the SoN, Vargo served as<br />
Associate Director <strong>of</strong> Development with<br />
Goodwill/Easter Seals in St. Paul. A 1995<br />
graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Chicago,<br />
Vargo is a native <strong>of</strong> St. Paul.<br />

Hassel Feted at<br />
Retirement after 20Years<br />
After 20 years in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>,<br />
Donna Hassel retired from her position as<br />
executive secretary in the Dean’s Office.<br />
When she first started in 1980, Ellen Fahy<br />
was the dean. She recalls using “an electric<br />
typewriter and carbon paper, and many<br />
times used a mimeograph machine. What<br />
a long way we have come!” She reflected<br />
on her career in the <strong>School</strong>.<br />
In recognition <strong>of</strong> her service, a reception<br />
was held September 28, 2000, at Eastcliff<br />
where over 50 co-workers, friends, and<br />
relatives gathered to wish her well on her<br />
retirement. A brief program was conducted<br />
highlighting the many “hats” she wore<br />
during her tenure. Several gifts were<br />
presented to Donna including a <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> watch, a gift<br />
basket <strong>of</strong> spa items, as well as cash<br />
with which she purchased a computer<br />
workstation for the computer her<br />

Mary Jo Kreitzer<br />
receives Complementary<br />
and Alternative Medicine<br />
Grant for $1.6 million<br />
Mary Jo Kreitzer, Ph.D. R.N., Assistant<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and Director, Center for Spirituality<br />
and Healing, has been awarded a<br />
National Institute <strong>of</strong> Health (NIH) grant<br />
for $1.6 million to build and support a<br />
curriculum in Complementary and Alternative<br />
Medicine (CAM). Kreitzer was<br />
principal investigator for the grant.<br />
The NIH grant will allow the center to<br />
integrate complementary and alternative<br />
medicine learning into the required cur-<br />
riculum <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, Medical<br />
<strong>School</strong> and all other schools in the Academic<br />
Health Center. The university was<br />
the first institute in the country to <strong>of</strong>fer a<br />
graduate minor in this area.<br />
“The Center for Spirituality and Healing<br />
intends to use this grant to strengthen<br />
and expand our collaborative relationships<br />
with complementary providers in the<br />
community,” said Dr. Kreitzer.<br />
“We are thrilled to be chosen by the<br />
NIH,” according to Frank Cerra, Senior<br />
Vice President for Health Services, “This<br />
is further evidence that the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> will continue to be seen as the<br />
site <strong>of</strong> choice for training health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />
in these areas. We are educating<br />
the next generation <strong>of</strong> health-care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals—pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />
who have not only<br />
heard <strong>of</strong> CAM, but who have experienced<br />
and provided those services. The NIH<br />
grant supports our work to develop a<br />
model and standard that we hope will be<br />
emulated throughout the country.”<br />

We have a winner! He is Gary Jader, a 1981 graduate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> and an R.N. for over 20 years. Jader’s story, Going to the<br />
Dogs, about one <strong>of</strong> his favorite patients, is reproduced below for your<br />
amusement. A special thanks to those who sent us your funny stories.<br />
We hope you enjoy the winning entry as much as we did.<br />
In his book The Anatomy <strong>of</strong> an Illness, Norman Cousin made the healing<br />
power <strong>of</strong> humor famous. He describes his personal experience <strong>of</strong><br />
reducing pain by watching his favorite funny movies. His “humor survival<br />
kit” included the classics by Abbott and Costello, the Marx Brothers, and<br />
the Candid Camera television show.<br />
Recently, a dear friend told me <strong>of</strong> her cancer diagnosis. Knowing<br />
that Lily Tomlin made her laugh and animals made her smile, it was easy<br />

Edith was one <strong>of</strong> my favorite home care patients.<br />
She was 70-something, funny, and forgetful. I saw her<br />
over a two-year period.<br />
“Good morning, Edith. Where are your teeth?”<br />
“Oh,” she said, covering her hand with her mouth and<br />
letting me into her small apartment. “I can’t find them.”<br />
The Denture Hunt began. I looked in the usual<br />
places, but found no dentures.<br />
“Where’s your dog?”<br />
“You know, I’m not sure.”<br />
Tootsie is a toy poodle. The kind <strong>of</strong> toy you hoped<br />
never to receive for Christmas.<br />
Edith and I searched for Tootsie. We found her<br />
behind the s<strong>of</strong>a with patches <strong>of</strong> the denture gums<br />
chewed away.<br />
“Tootsie! Bad girl!” Edith said examining the dentures.<br />
She put them into her mouth and smiled broadly<br />
at me.<br />

Caring initiative and the <strong>Minnesota</strong> component<br />
<strong>of</strong> the national project.<br />
What is Colleagues in Caring (CIC)?<br />
The full title <strong>of</strong> the project is “Colleagues<br />
in Caring: Regional Collaboratives for<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Work Force Development,” and<br />
it is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson<br />
“Not a good look,” I said. Spooky World came<br />
to mind.<br />
After taking her blood pressure, I reviewed her<br />
meds.<br />
“What are these?”<br />
“Tootsie’s pills, a tranquilizer, and an antibiotic.”<br />
“Edith, you’re going to need to be VERY careful.<br />
Look at these pills.” Her beta-blocker and diuretic<br />
looked like Tootsie’s pills. Smiling, I wondered to myself<br />
if two beta-blockers could kill a small animal.<br />
“Hey, if I take hers, maybe I’ll become man’s best<br />
friend,” she said with a wink and a giggle.<br />
“Good-bye, Edith, I’ll see you next week.”<br />
Two days later, my beeper went <strong>of</strong>f. It was Edith.<br />
“Gary, I need you to come over right away.”<br />
“Why? What’s wrong?”<br />
“I don’t feel so good. I can’t seem to wake up. I’ve<br />
been sleeping around the clock.”<br />
“I’ll be right over.”<br />
A groggy Edith greeted me at the door. Puddles <strong>of</strong><br />
urine were everywhere. Tootsie was hovering over her<br />
Foundation. Believing that nursing leaders<br />
should work together and lead in creative,<br />
proactive ways, the Foundation established<br />
this initiative to enhance regional<br />
and state collaborative planning, as well as<br />
implement actions and policies to address<br />
the rapid changes occurring in the<br />
United States nursing labor market.<br />
Who is involved? Twenty states,<br />
including <strong>Minnesota</strong>, were selected to<br />
receive funds for three years (recently<br />
for me to put together a humor basket, which included a book <strong>of</strong> “Edith Ann”<br />
humor and a fun videotape <strong>of</strong> baby animals.<br />
What calls forth the healing power <strong>of</strong> humor in you? What makes you<br />
laugh? Have you shared this with your family and friends so they can support<br />
you when you need it most? Ask what makes your family and friends<br />
laugh so you can give the gift <strong>of</strong> humor back to them.<br />

water dish. Edith had slept long into the afternoon.<br />
Sherlock Holmes wasn’t needed for this one.<br />
“Edith, you mixed up your pills with Tootsie’s.<br />
You took her tranquilizers and you gave her your<br />
water pill.”<br />
“Oh, my, no wonder I slept like a dog,” she said.<br />
“That’s ‘log,’” I corrected her. “You can ‘Go to the<br />
Dogs,’ and you can ‘Sleep like a log,’ but you can’t<br />
sleep like a dog.” Edith suffered from aphorism<br />
dyslexia. “And if you do that again, I’m not going to take<br />
you out for a walk,” I jested.<br />
Edith laughed. “I’m just glad you didn’t let sleeping<br />
dogs lie,” she said laughing again.<br />
“Good one, Edith. Now, I hate to be dogmatic, but<br />
this can’t happen again.” After much needed patient<br />
teaching, I headed for the door. “Bye, Edith.”<br />
“Bye, Gary,” Edith barked. “See, you can teach an<br />
old dog new tricks!”<br />
As I headed out to my car, I thought that Edith may<br />
never become man’s best friend, but I knew she was<br />
becoming mine. •

Robin Lally Chosen First White Family Cancer Award Winner<br />
Robin Lally, a Ph.D. student from Prior Lake,<br />
MN, at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> has been awarded<br />
the first White Family Cancer Award.<br />
Lally also received her baccalaureate and master’s<br />
degrees from the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>. She will<br />
use her award to partially fund a trip to the 2001<br />
Oncology <strong>Nursing</strong> Society Congress in San Diego<br />
in May, where she will present a research paper,<br />
“Use <strong>of</strong> Care Guides to Educate and Impact the<br />
Quality <strong>of</strong> Life <strong>of</strong> Women Undergoing Breast<br />
Reconstructive Surgery.” Lally is currently a breast<br />
cancer care specialist at Health System <strong>Minnesota</strong>.<br />
Robin Lally<br />
The award was established by the White Family<br />
Cancer Endowment Fund, established by Earl and Duane White in honor <strong>of</strong><br />
Mildred (Earl’s first wife and Duane’s mother) who died in April 1977 <strong>of</strong> colon<br />
cancer and Marion (Earl’s second wife) who died December 1998 <strong>of</strong> lung<br />
cancer. Brennan, 8, Duane’s eldest son, was diagnosed with acute leukemia<br />
in January 1997 and completed treatment March 6, 2000.<br />
Janice Post-White, Ph.D., Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> is<br />
renewed). Each state has set up its own<br />
structure and plan to best deal with its own<br />
particular issues. For example, Mississippi<br />
had established a <strong>Nursing</strong> Organization<br />
Liaison Committee in the mid-1980s, so<br />
they used their money to establish an<br />
Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Workforce Redevelopment<br />
to promote workplace advocacy,<br />
increase appropriations for nursing<br />
education, and obtain third-party reimbursement<br />
for advanced practice nurses.<br />
The Idaho Commission on <strong>Nursing</strong> and<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Education has developed articulation<br />
agreements between all nursing<br />
schools in Idaho, and examined the atti-<br />

In honor <strong>of</strong> the courageous spirits <strong>of</strong> these family members and the expertise<br />
and dedication <strong>of</strong> their oncology nurses, the White Family designated<br />
funding for the advancement <strong>of</strong> nursing education, science and the art <strong>of</strong> caring<br />
for persons with cancer.<br />
According to the White family, “The goal <strong>of</strong> the award is to improve the<br />
care <strong>of</strong> cancer patients and their families. Students actively enrolled in the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> at the undergraduate, master’s or<br />
doctoral levels will be eligible to receive awards. Students may submit applications<br />
to fund research projects, clinical preceptor experiences or conference<br />
fees and travel.”<br />
Awards range from $200 to $1,000, and support projects such as research<br />
projects, clinical internships with preceptors, conference fees and travel.<br />
Doctoral students are encouraged to apply for the Oncology <strong>Nursing</strong><br />
Research Short Course to present their dissertation research for critique and<br />
mentorship at a national O.N.S. meeting.<br />
Applicants will be accepted through September 10 for the next award.<br />

How is <strong>Minnesota</strong>’s project set up? The<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> CIC project (MnCIC) is led by<br />
the State Collaborative Council, an organization<br />
with representatives from<br />
approximately 15 nursing organizations,<br />
along with representatives from the<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health<br />
(MDH), the Health Education Industry<br />
Partnership<br />
(HEIP), and the<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> Hospital<br />
and Healthcare<br />
Partnership<br />
(MHHP). MnCIC<br />
provides oversight<br />
and direction for<br />
developing and<br />
implementing a<br />
statewide plan for<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> nursing<br />
leaders to use in<br />
participating in the<br />
Robert Wood<br />
Johnson project.<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> leaders<br />
from the major<br />
nursing organizations<br />
come<br />
together monthly<br />
to develop a plan for <strong>Nursing</strong>. The representatives<br />
engage in dialogue and strive to<br />
achieve outcomes to advance nursing and<br />
patient care.<br />
Six regional councils provide an opportunity<br />
for nurses throughout the state to<br />
participate in the dialogue and decisionmaking.<br />
These regional councils are<br />
responsible for evaluating issues within the<br />
region, making recommendations to the<br />
State Collaborative Council, and ensuring<br />
that the regional plan contributes to the<br />
achievement <strong>of</strong> the state-wide goals. A<br />
chairperson or coordinator leads the six<br />
councils, with a regional coordinator providing<br />
staff support.<br />
What has <strong>Minnesota</strong> accomplished to<br />
this point? Thus far, MnCIC has:<br />
• established the state-wide Collaborative<br />
Council and the regional councils.<br />
• implemented a state-wide Articulation<br />
Agreement among schools <strong>of</strong> nursing to<br />
foster a smooth transition for students<br />
moving among educational programs.<br />
• developed the Asset Model for the<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>ession for use as a framework<br />
in defining the characteristics needed by<br />
nurses, and providing guidance for nurses<br />
in strengthening their pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice.<br />
• conducted a survey <strong>of</strong> high school<br />
students to determine their interest in nursing<br />
as a career, and reasons for choosing or<br />
not choosing it.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> this effort, a statewide conference<br />
was held in December to hear nurses’<br />
concerns and suggestions for action.<br />
Presently, a plan focusing on the retention<br />
<strong>of</strong> nurses is being developed, a major component<br />
<strong>of</strong> which is an informational and<br />
marketing campaign. Much work has gone<br />
into developing a uniform, or at least unified,<br />
database related to nursing supply<br />
and demand, retention, and turnover in<br />
the state.<br />
• conducted a workshop in January on<br />
workforce issues facing all health pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />
and health-care employee groups.<br />
• convened an L.P.N. Role Task Force<br />
to examine the role <strong>of</strong> the L.P.N., and<br />
ensure that their roles are being fully and<br />
appropriately utilized.<br />
• developed a survey which will be distributed<br />
in the fall to nursing faculty on<br />
satisfaction in their work environments.<br />
• held a conference in the fall <strong>of</strong> 1999<br />
with 150 attendees, discussing such topics<br />
as trends in health care, nursing policy<br />
issues, and the labor shortage, as well as<br />
the Asset Model for the <strong>Nursing</strong><br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />
• established strong partnerships among<br />
nursing service providers, nursing educators,<br />
and other key health-care groups.<br />
A number <strong>of</strong> other initiatives are in<br />
progress, including a mentoring project<br />
linking students with nurses currently in<br />
practice; a survey <strong>of</strong> nursing students in all<br />
educational programs; a New Grad<br />
Success project, focusing on bridging the<br />
gap between the skills and knowledge<br />
nurses have upon graduation and the skills<br />
and knowledge necessary to be successful<br />
in the first practice setting; a nursing skills<br />
study; forums held in each <strong>of</strong> the regions<br />
this summer on workforce issues, and a<br />
study <strong>of</strong> facilities providing clinical space<br />
for nursing students to determine if there<br />
are additional types <strong>of</strong> sites needed.<br />
One major State Collaborative Council<br />
initiative underway is the development <strong>of</strong> a<br />
shared agenda for nursing to take to the<br />
legislature for policy and action. Areas<br />
being addressed in this initiative include<br />
enhanced student financial support,<br />
enhanced faculty development, commu-<br />

nity planning grants, and improving the<br />
work environment.<br />
This last initiative, developing a shared<br />
agenda which all nursing leaders can support,<br />
is especially exciting. Rather than<br />
groups individually advocating only narrow<br />
issues, the collaborative voice <strong>of</strong><br />
nursing is being used to advance broad<br />
strategies which can move patient care and<br />
nursing forward across the state.<br />

Carolyn Olson Ferguson, 88, died<br />
January 20, 2001, at her home in Mankato, MN.<br />
Ferguson was one <strong>of</strong> the first stewardesses from<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> for United Airlines, American Airlines,<br />
and Northwest Airlines.<br />
Carolyn Olson received her nursing degree at<br />
the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>.<br />
Patricia L. Gault, 59, Class <strong>of</strong> 1965,<br />
(B.S.N.) and 1967 (M.A.), a long-time resident <strong>of</strong><br />
Monticello, MN, died February 2, 2001, in California.<br />
She had been a registered nurse at<br />
Abbott-Northwestern Hospital for 25 years. Gault<br />
established the Veronica Pec Gault Memorial<br />
Scholarship in memory <strong>of</strong> her mother. The<br />
scholarship benefits graduate students who are<br />
preparing for nursing careers in geriatric health<br />
care delivery.<br />
Margaret K. Schafer, 96, died December<br />
13, 2000. Margaret, who never married, had<br />
an illustrious nursing career. She was operating<br />
room supervisor at the U <strong>of</strong> Michigan Hospital in<br />
1942 after which she joined the U.S. Army, and<br />
was sent to London to be in charge <strong>of</strong> the western<br />
section <strong>of</strong> Army nurses.<br />
She became chief nurse <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Army<br />
nurses in the United Kingdom. After the war, she<br />
moved to Frankfurt, Germany. She attained the<br />
rank <strong>of</strong> lieutenant colonel and was awarded the<br />

In Memoriam<br />
The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> has received news <strong>of</strong> four graduates who died in the past few months.<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> the British Empire by King George VI<br />
and the Bronze Star by the U.S. Army.<br />
After the war, Margaret went to Washington<br />
D.C., where she worded with the army in personnel<br />
and recruiting, the Navy Public Health Service<br />
as well as the Federal Civil Defense for<br />
which she was Chief Nurse.<br />
Audrey E. Windemuth, 89, Class <strong>of</strong> 1939<br />
(B.S.N.) and 1959 (M.A.) died September 19,<br />
2000, in Roseville, MN. A native <strong>of</strong> North Dakota,<br />
Windemuth started her nursing career in the late<br />
1930s as a staff nurse at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />
Hospital and later became acting assistant<br />
superintendent <strong>of</strong> nurses. Later, she was senior<br />
clinic nurse in the Outpatient Department, as well<br />
as Public Health Nurse Coordinator and <strong>Nursing</strong><br />
Supervisor. In addition, she was an instructor for<br />
the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>.<br />
She published a book, The Nurse and the<br />
Outpatient Department, in 1957. Windemuth left<br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> in 1960 to become the first director <strong>of</strong><br />
nursing services at West Virginia <strong>University</strong> Hospital<br />
in Morgantown, directing over 500 registered<br />
nurses, L.P.N.’s, and nurses assistants.<br />
She later became associate clinical pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />
the <strong>University</strong> and eventually associate director.<br />
She retired in 1976, returning to <strong>Minnesota</strong> in the<br />
early 1980s. •

Mark Yud<strong>of</strong> is the erudite Philadelphia<br />
lawyer with a rapier sense <strong>of</strong> humor.<br />
Governor Jesse Ventura is the giant <strong>of</strong> a man<br />
whose election “shocked the world.” The local<br />
press can’t get enough <strong>of</strong> the dueling odd couple<br />
over the <strong>University</strong>’s biennial budget request.<br />

The President, intent on leading the <strong>University</strong> to realize its<br />
full potential, proposed an ambitious biennial agenda with a<br />
budget to match. The Governor, intent on honoring his campaign<br />
pledge to return surplus tax revenues through rebates,<br />
responded by recommending only $56 million (25%) <strong>of</strong> the<br />
request. This is enough to fund only the increase in health<br />
insurance premiums. There would be no support for faculty<br />
salary increases, infrastructure support, or any new<br />
investments.<br />
A host <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> supporters have come to our aid by<br />
informing their legislators that they oppose the Governor’s<br />
proposal and asking the legislators to do the same. These loyal<br />
supporters understand the unique role that this land-grant and<br />
research <strong>University</strong> plays as the major economic and intellectual<br />
engine for the state.<br />
Each year, more than 9,000 new graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />
pour into the workforce lending their knowledge and skills to<br />
our quality <strong>of</strong> life. Last year, the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> was responsible<br />
for 96 new registered nurses, 90 new masters’-prepared<br />
nurses and 10 new Ph.D’s. While we prepare only about 17% <strong>of</strong><br />
the baccalaureate graduates in the state, these new nurses along<br />
with the new M.S. and Ph.D. graduates continue to make a dis-<br />

proportionate contribution to our discipline and to health care,<br />
just as their predecessors have for the past 90 years.<br />
Asked how the <strong>University</strong> would respond if the Governor’s<br />
proposal were to become law, President Yud<strong>of</strong> has said there<br />
are only three options: retrenchment <strong>of</strong> unit budgets, salary<br />
freezes, or double-digit tuition increases—or some combination<br />
<strong>of</strong> the three. Any one <strong>of</strong> these options would have<br />
serious consequences for the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>. Any significant<br />
retrenchment will force us to reduce one or more <strong>of</strong> our<br />
educational programs or to find the necessary funding elsewhere.<br />
Freezing salaries will make it more difficult for us to<br />
recruit and retain talented faculty members. Hiking tuition will<br />
discourage applicants to our educational programs. While any<br />
action that would reduce the number <strong>of</strong> students makes no<br />
sense in the midst <strong>of</strong> a major nursing shortage, the sources <strong>of</strong><br />
other possible long-term funding are virtually non-existent.<br />
Retrenchment would also put a damper on our growing<br />
research effort and our commitment to experiment with new<br />
educational programs to address the need for advanced practice<br />
nurses and doctorally prepared faculty for the state.<br />
As anxiety filling as this situation is, it does force us to reflect<br />
on priorities and the value <strong>of</strong> our contributions. We think<br />
our priorities are about right. We intend to continue to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
first-rate educational programs and to do the research that is<br />
needed to address health care needs.<br />
We don’t know if the duel that the Governor has provoked is<br />
political gamesmanship or serious business. Time will tell. But<br />
we cannot afford to take the challenge lightly. Our lobbying<br />
efforts have been supplemented with serious contingency planning<br />
should the worse case scenarios become real. Won’t you<br />
join us in making our case to the legislature? •<br />

Who is Y.M.T? A Lesson in Persistence<br />
The initials read: Y.M.T. ’70.<br />
The 10-K gold pin is a <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Minnesota</strong> pin, over 30 years old, and was lost to its original<br />
owner.<br />
The finder represents a lesson in persistence.<br />
Jennifer A. Hart-Abraham, now an Attorney at Law in<br />
St. Paul, found the pin over 10 years ago in her parents’ pharmacy<br />
in Forest Lake, MN. She tried to find the owner at that<br />
time, but to no avail.<br />
Fast forward 10 years. Jennifer called Barbara La Valleur,<br />
Communications Coordinator, at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>.<br />

Y.M.T. is Yvonne Margaret Tandberg, now retired from<br />
nursing, and living in Forest Lake. When contacted, she could<br />
only repeat: “I cannot believe this! I cannot believe this! I felt<br />
so badly to have lost it. It’s something you never want to lose.<br />
I looked down and my pin was gone. I searched and searched.<br />
I was working in a nursing home when I noticed that it was<br />
missing. I thought it had fallen in some bed linen and gotten<br />
lost in the laundry. Oh, I cannot believe this.”<br />
A meeting is being arranged to have the finder present the<br />
owner with her long-lost pin. •
Managed Care Institute<br />
Over 100 students and faculty from six <strong>Minnesota</strong> colleges<br />
and universities are expected to attend the Managed Care<br />
Institute for <strong>Minnesota</strong> Nurse Practitioner Students, a two<br />
and a half day, interactive institute featuring outstanding<br />
speakers, May 16–18 at the Earle Brown Center on the<br />
St. Paul campus.<br />
Purpose <strong>of</strong> the institute is to provide education to Nurse<br />
Practitioner and Midwifery students to assist them in working<br />
in a managed care environment and assist educators in developing<br />
N.P. curriculum that included managed care principles.<br />
Highlights <strong>of</strong> the institute will include programs on the<br />
issues and future trends <strong>of</strong> managed care; history and evolution;<br />
using evidence in practice; care management <strong>of</strong><br />
populations; accountability for providers; the ABCs <strong>of</strong> the<br />
financial aspects; interdependence <strong>of</strong> providers, and successful<br />
N.P. practices. •<br />
45th Reunion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> Class <strong>of</strong> 1955<br />
Thirty-three classmates from California to Canada,<br />
from Maryland to Florida, attended the 45th reunion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>,<br />
Class <strong>of</strong> 1955 on August 26, 2000. Classmates met<br />
at the Fairview <strong>University</strong> Medical Center in the<br />
morning receiving a souvenir reunion booklet and<br />
viewed the video, Katharine J. Densford: A Living<br />
Legacy. This was especially meaningful because<br />
“Katy J” was dean when they were in their nurses<br />
training. In the evening, a banquet and program was<br />
held for classmates and guests at the Radisson Hotel<br />
Metrodome.<br />

Dear Editor:<br />
I have really enjoyed the last two issues <strong>of</strong> Network. They<br />
contain the kinds <strong>of</strong> articles I wish I could read about nursing<br />
in the popular press. One that really stands out for me is the<br />
story on Jehad Adwan and why he loves nursing so much.<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> is a wonderful marriage <strong>of</strong> science and the whole<br />
human experience. I am not a nurse but I teach physiology to<br />
nurses in the advanced practice program. I am an educator<br />
who is appalled by how nurses are portrayed in the media.<br />
Case in point, an MPR talk show I enjoy very much, “Midmorning,”<br />
had a guest on that in the last few minutes blasted<br />
schools <strong>of</strong> nursing as being, among other things, “controlled<br />
by feminists” and “anti-science.”<br />
I wish that we could all do a better job <strong>of</strong> informing the<br />
public and correcting media reports about nursing and nursing<br />
research. There is more to the story than the nursing<br />
shortage, though I appreciate the letters to the editor I’ve read<br />
from the <strong>University</strong> on this subject. I would like to read letters<br />
to the editor in the Minneapolis and St. Paul papers from<br />
nurse researchers about the knowledge generation and the use<br />
<strong>of</strong> technology by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong>. I know some <strong>of</strong> you listen to Katherine Lanpher and<br />
“Midmorning.” Call in sometime and identify yourself as a<br />
“nurse scientist” or a “nurse researcher.” Maybe Katherine<br />
will get curious and do a show about nursing research.<br />
