Prompted by a 1954 survey which indicated that approximately 20<br />
percent of the Battle Creek area high school graduates were attending<br />
college, as compared to a national average of 45 percent, leading<br />
citizens organized a task force to investigate reasons why more<br />
graduates were not pursuing advanced education. The task force<br />
determined that additional youth would attend college if higher<br />
education could be made more economical, job entry programs<br />
could be developed and an institution could be located in the Battle<br />
Creek area.<br />
Responding to the citizens' requests, the Battle Creek Board of<br />
Education established Battle Creek <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> as a department<br />
of the public school system in the summer of 1956.<br />
Ninety-four students enrolled in classes held in the G.A.R. Hall,<br />
High School, Youth Building, Willard Library, YMCA, and WK.<br />
<strong>Kellogg</strong> Junior High School. Eighty-two students enrolled in evening<br />
classes a month later.<br />
From the beginning the citizens were supportive of the new <strong>College</strong><br />
and established a number of student scholarships. The young people<br />
also responded positively, and 340 students enrolled in the third year<br />
of operation.<br />
In October of 1958 the district residents endorsed a millage, by a<br />
five to one margin, to purchase a site and construct the Classroom/Administration<br />
Building. Early in 1960 the w.K. <strong>Kellogg</strong><br />
Foundation provided a supplemental gift to be used for completion<br />
of the proposed campus. The Classroom/Administration Building,<br />
the Science Building and the Heating Plant were completed in<br />
September 1960. The library, Student Center and Auditorium were<br />
completed in 1961. Also in 1961, the Lane Thomas Foundation<br />
bestowed a financial gift to construct the Lane Thomas Memorial<br />
Building which was completed in 1962, enabling the <strong>College</strong> to<br />
develop a comprehensive program. Further support came from the<br />
Albert L. and Louise B. Miller Foundation, making it possible to<br />
complete the Miller Physical Education Building in 1966.<br />
History of the <strong>College</strong><br />
Additional community interest and sizable grants from the W.K.<br />
<strong>Kellogg</strong> Foundation made it possible to expand the campus to the<br />
present 146 acres and enabled the <strong>College</strong> to add a second Classroom<br />
Building which opened early in 1967.<br />
By 1970 the <strong>College</strong> student population grew to approximately<br />
2,000 day and 1,100 evening students who were enrolled in 373<br />
classes in 72 different curriculums.<br />
On June 29, 1970 voters of Calhoun County created an area-wide<br />
<strong>College</strong> district. <strong>Kellogg</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>, with a newly elected<br />
Board of Trustees, began a new era of service to the area.<br />
The Harry R. Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center was<br />
completed in 1970 with funds provided by the W.K. <strong>Kellogg</strong> Foundation.<br />
In 1975 the Emory W. Morris Leaming Resource Center (library)<br />
was expanded with funds from the W.K. <strong>Kellogg</strong> Foundation, which<br />
were matched by state capital outlay appropriations; the Student<br />
Center was expanded with local funds in 1976.<br />
In 1978 the w.K. <strong>Kellogg</strong> Foundation provided funds for the construction<br />
of the Lyle C. Roll Science and Health Technology Center.<br />
The Kendall Foundation, for many years, provided thousands of<br />
dollars to support the Concert-Lecture Series, a Home Health Care<br />
<strong>Program</strong>, curriculum improvements, and student scholarships for<br />
hundreds of individuals pursuing allied health programs.<br />
In the fall of 1991 KCC had 3,445 students enrolled in day classes,<br />
2,961 students enrolled in evening classes and 1,256 students enrolled<br />
in a combination of day and evening classes.<br />
Since 1956 over 215,000 students have taken classes on campus or<br />
in one of the outlying community centers.
