HEARTsafe Howick – OnTuesday night we had a very passionate address
from Jayshree Ramesh-Sukha from the St John ambulance organisation.
In Jayshree’s words: “HEARTsafe is a community project that aims to increase
the chances of survival after someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest in your
community. It does this by encouraging businesses and communities to install
AEDs (automated external defibrillators) in workplaces, training people to use
AEDs and increasing the number of people who know CPR (cardiopulmonary
resuscitation).”
Howick Rotary is being encouraged to support this initiative by involving and
encouraging the local business community to get behind this worthwhile cause.
With our connections and commitment to community-based projects, St John
see us as the best group to help educate our business people to help save lives.
As you know we have decided to purchase three AED’s (defibrillators) and
place them around the Howick Shopping area, but these will be useless if
people are not trained in the correct use of the AED, and the basics of CPR.
Jayshree believes that we are the right people to head up an awareness
campaign to promote the use of these lifesaving devices.
Our Club Night on the 26 th March will be devoted to the correct use of the
defibrillator, and administering CPR. Did you know that Cardiac Arrest is
mainly amongst people over 65, and 70% of those are Male? Here is your
chance to learn how you could save a life (it could even be a member of your
own family). Please support this initiative and particularly the demonstration
evening on the 26 th March. You never know when you might be called upon to
show your skills! Thank you, Jayshree.
Next Week is our Petanque evening in Cockle Bay. If you can’t make the
competition, make sure that you come along and join in the BBQ afterwards.
Please advise Alasdair if you are a competitor, or just an eater, so that Jim
can organise the food. Colin.
Keyway Humour, Words of Wisdom and Philosophy
While trawling the web for this weeks content, I came
across this (ed. - Matthew Cooke)...
On Thursday 14 th February 2013, the Rotary Club of Corringham
Thameside held their annual “Bad taste tie and joke night” in
memory of the club members who have died in service.President
John Wallington began by reading a list of those who had died in
service and this was followed by a short period of silent reflection.
As is the tradition, all members present were expected to relate at
least one funny story. Needless to say, it wasn’t long before the
room was rocking with laughter as each Rotarian vied to “out-do”
the others in their quest to win the coveted “Jester’s hat”.
Words of wisdom? Humour? Philosophy?
Update # 2 from Lauren Petty - RCOH Student
Hello Howick Rotary Club!
Hur mår du? -‐ How are you? My Swedish is coming along slowly, I'm learning quite a lot in
my SFI (swedish for immigrants) class, but sFll need to get the hang of building sentences
since it is not the same as the english way. Which is rather annoying haha. Everybody
here is telling me to start speaking Swedish, make swedish friends and get english out of
your head. Easier said than done when basically all of Sweden speaks English almost
fluently, but I guess I'll get there.
Well the other day myself, Gunnar (host dad) and my most brother Jonathan took the car
ferry from a city/town called Helsingborg over to Copenhagen in Denmark! We took a
long scenic drive along the coast of Copenhagen to inside the city to a place called
Experimetorium. It's mainly for children and is to do with hands on science stuff. It was
preSy fun and had some neat stuff there. Denmark was a beauFful place definitely! The
houses by the sea side were awesome, some of the roofs where made from something
that could grow grass/seaweed. I was really amazed! On the way home we took the long
way back through the city so I got to see the city for real and it was really nice! Very
similar to Sweden. I will definitely be going back there soon!
I've also been normal skiing at a place called Vallåsen ski field! It is Ängelholm's only one
close by and is rather small but good enough for me to pracFce! We went at night
because the night before i was staying at my friends cabin and my host dad picked me up
straight from their place in the aKernoon and went straight to the ski field! Oh my gosh, the
first 6me I went down the main hill I fell over almost straight away, i got so much speed i didn't
know how to slow down and just fell. I was really scared aKer that and my host brother
suggested I go on the more easier track, which s6ll was scary but i suppose easier and less
people I could run into. I did fall a few 6mes aKer the first but eventually got the hang of it,
even though i had my skis in an arrow basically the whole 6me going down. I'm very nervous
about how hard the ski fields in Åre (pronounced Ora) are going to be! My trip there to the
middle of Sweden is in about a week!
I've also got my Iden6ty card from the Swedish embassy that allows me to stay in Sweden and
my social security number. Some small stuff i've been doing whilst here is been going to my
host brothers football games, going to the gym and i'm soon going to sign up for tennis, hanging
out with friends, SHOPPING and baking food. The schools here do not have as many co-curricular
ac6vi6es as in New Zealand, more of the clubs are outside of school.
Well, since it has been only 2 weeks or so since i last wrote not much has happened.
Thanks again Howick Club for sponsoring me and wish me luck on my ski trip to Åre in a
week! Thanks, Lauren
Background...
For 3 years it was held successfully, organised by Crawford Medical Centre who recognised the need for an event
of this kind to promote exercise for our physical wellbeing and health. After receiving many calls to repeat the
event Crawford invited the Rotary Club of Howick to join with them and to help make this a premier fun event for the
whole community to take part in and enjoy. This year 2013, Howick Rotary is enthusiastically hosting the event,
believing it to be a great drawcard for runners and walkers and their families to enjoy the scenery and history of
Howick. The entry per participant of a gold coin will go towards the local Howick Coastguard organisation to enable
them to continue and expand their vital service. As a draw card, high profile local athletes and dignitaries will lead
the walkers and runners from Stockade Hill round the route.
When is it happening? 10.00am on Sunday 24th March 2013...
The start and finish are on Stockade Hill in Howick with plenty of room for large numbers and great views over
Howick and out to the Hauraki Gulf. Stockade Hill has been booked through the Auckland Council along with space
for signage.
What is it all about...
The primary aim of this event is to have something for everyone so it’s not a race as such. However runners can
use it as a SUCCESSOR to Round The Bays Run earlier in the month. People can run or walk the 8.5kms (or less)
with family and friends taking in the scenery and experiencing a different view of the Howick area, including Picton
Street. Because of Howick’s rich history, as an option, a local historian will lead interested walkers around 40
points of historic interest within the local area - a distance of approximately 4.5 kms. Before the walk starts, a
celebrity MC will go over the order of proceedings, health and safety requirements and information on the spot prize
draws. After the walk participants and families can relax under one of the many trees on Stockade Hill and enjoy
music, food and entertainment. It’s a day designed for the whole family to enjoy.
Why...
This is an event that encourages people of all ages and abilities to improve their health and wellbeing through
gentle exercise, fresh air and good fun. It is unique to the area and offers something for all and at the same time
benefiting two very worthy local causes. The Howick Community Fun and Walk will be an annual event which
people in our community will look forward to each year and have on their calendars.
