The Wells experience is founded on
the principle that everyone should
feel that they can be what they are.
Wells Cathedral School is a
community where people are
accepted for simply being what they
are. For everyone at Wells, there is
the chance to live in a world where
being friends with extraordinary
people is accepted as the norm.
There is a refreshing sense of mutual
respect between pupils whatever their
interests and talents.
Wells is a school where a wide variety
of pupils can thrive: there is a place
here for every sort of child. It can
be no surprise, therefore, that Wells
produces well-rounded adults, at ease
with themselves.
Be what you are
History of Wells
Wells began as a holy place
which took its name from the
springs in what are now the
grounds of the Bishop’s Palace.
The city was a Roman
settlement, but only became
an important centre under the
Saxons when King Ine of Wessex
founded a minster church in 704.
During the English Civil War,
Parliamentarian troops used the
cathedral to stable their horses
and damaged much of the
ornate sculpture by using it for
firing practice.
Wells was the final location
of the Bloody Assizes on
September 23rd 1685. In one
day over 500 men were tried
and the majority sentenced to
death.
During World War II, Stoberry
Park in Wells was the location of
a Prisoner of War camp, housing
Italian prisoners from the
Western Desert Campaign, and
later German prisoners after the
Battle of Normandy.
In recent years, this historic
city has become a major tourist
attraction. After the City of
London, Wells is the smallest city
in England.

The Junior School
28 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
The Junior School is adjacent
to the Senior School, so while
you feel safe in your own
environment, you also feel a part
of the whole school. As a pupil in
the Junior School you are a part
of a small family which is in itself
part of a larger one comprising
the Senior School, Sixth Form,
Music School and Junior School.
Our belief is that in order to
function successfully as a family,
there needs to be a strong
sense of balance, understanding,
honesty and happiness within
each individual member. In
the Junior School we strive to
ensure that this ethos becomes
second nature to you, so when
you eventually leave us you are a
more rounded individual, able to
cope easily with the rather more
demanding aspects of senior
school life.
Whatever your talent you can
be sure that you will be able
to develop it as much as you
wish whether it’s playing an
instrument, scoring a goal or
creating a masterpiece. You may
not consider yourself to be
particularly skilled at anything,
but at Wells that doesn’t matter;
every child is recognised as an
individual. While talents should
be nurtured, it is every bit as
important for you to simply have
fun and enjoy what you like doing
most - and, perhaps, get really
good at it.
www.wells-cathedral-school.com
30 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
Your teachers will help you to
develop your skills and ensure
that your interests play an
important part in your school
day. In the Junior School we
regard music, drama, dance, the
arts and sport as being highly
important aspects of academic
life.
This is reflected in our
Artsmark Gold, awarded by the
Arts Council England for our
creativity and extensive arts
programme. Wells Cathedral
School is one of only a handful
of independent schools to have
been awarded this for the whole
school.
The award also recognises
our use of visiting artists in
workshops, our many trips
to theatres, museums and art
galleries and our participation in
national and international arts
festivals such as the Edinburgh
Fringe, where we take many of
our productions.
Each week Key Stage Two pupils
receive six hours’ lessons in art,
dance, drama and music from
specialist subject teachers. Pupils
aged 3 to 7 also receive a large
number of timetabled lessons
in these subjects with specialist
teachers.
www.wells-cathedral-school.com
31
32 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
Class sizes are normally
between 11 and 18 and there
are only single-year forms. This
means that you can get a lot of
attention from your teachers
on a one-to-one basis and you
will only find children of your
academic age in your class.
We try to make learning as
exciting as possible because we
know that the more fun you
have in the classroom, the more
you will understand and this will
help you to think independently.
Our broad curriculum covers
a wide range of subjects taught
by specialist teachers. From
Key Stage One onwards
your timetable will include:
English, Maths, Science, History,
Geography, Religious Studies,
Drama, ICT, Music, Art and DT,
Games, PSHE, Modern Foreign
Languages including French,
German and Mandarin Chinese,
and PE which includes swimming,
dance and gymnastics. Quite a
variety and sure to keep you
interested at every level!
A strong sporting tradition lies
at the heart of the Junior School.
We believe that sport is not
just about keeping fit and having
fun; it instils an ethos of team
building, confidence, leadership,
and discipline into everyone
who embraces it.
We share the sporting facilities
with the whole school, so you
will be able to swim in our
covered swimming pool, play
hockey on our astroturf pitch,
dance in our purpose-designed
studio, play tennis and netball on
dedicated courts, play rugby and
football on our pitches, and have
gym lessons in our sports hall.
As a pupil in the Junior School,
you will get the chance to play
for the school in one of our
many inter-school fixtures at U8,
U9, U10 and U11 level. These
are played in the major sports
– rugby, hockey and cricket
for boys; hockey, netball and
rounders for girls. The school
arranges events throughout
the year allowing children
of all abilities to take part in
competitive games.
By Key Stage Two you will be
enjoying four hours of sport a
week, all taught by fully qualified
coaches and PE specialists.
The facilities for nursery and
early years learning provide an
enchanting and inspiring start to
an education. All classes in the
Early Years Foundation Stage can
make the most of the extensive
and attractive school grounds for
outdoor education and exploring,
whilst also benefiting from the
impressive drama hall, specialist
music facilities and sports hall.
The Junior School offers you the
chance to explore a wide range
of activities and educational
experiences without necessarily
being channelled into one
particular area.
A wide variety of activities at
lunchtime and after school
is available. The schedule of
activities changes regularly. In
the past we have offered the
following among many others:
art and craft, athletics, book
appreciation, chess, choir,
computers, cricket, dance, drama,
football, gardening, Latin, netball,
orchestra,steel pans, swimming
and tennis... plenty for everyone.
Wells Cathedral School is a
well known and highly regarded
specialist music school. But
whether you play an instrument
or not, you cannot fail to
experience the truly magical
influence of Wells’ musical
heritage whilst benefiting from
the excellent musical provision
that the Junior School gives to its
pupils.
To the west of Wells lie the
Somerset Levels and Moors, a
sparsely populated wetland area
of 250 acres in central Somerset,
between the Quantock and
Mendip Hills. This expanse of flat
land barely rises above sea level.
Before it was drained, much of
the land was under a shallow
brackish sea in winter and was
marsh land in summer. Drainage
began with the Romans, and was
restarted at various times by
the Anglo-Saxons; in the Middle
Ages by Glastonbury Abbey; and
during the Second World War.
Westhay Moor, located some
ten miles to the west of Wells is
one of 80 sites managed by the
Somerset Wildlife Trust. One of
the most remarkable aspects
of Westhay is the annual arrival
of hundreds of thousands of
starlings who take refuge in its
reed beds.

The Senior School
44 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
Academic, musical, sporting,
artistic and personal
development lies at the heart of
Wells Cathedral Senior School.
Wells encourages an
adventurous and ‘go-getting’
environment that inspires
confident, successful learning
for life. Leadership is nurtured
through a rigorous and
competitive, yet supportive
and accepting climate
throughout the school; personal
achievements are widely
communicated and celebrated.
The Senior School provides
a smooth transition from the
Junior School. Pupils are slowly
allowed to develop greater
independence, and as well as
being given greater academic,
creative and sporting challenges,
you are invited to participate
in as many clubs, societies,
trips and social activities that
you think you can handle.
While academic success is
important, Wells prides itself on
producing alumni that have had
experiences some could only
dream of: from touring Hong
Kong with the brass department,
to producing a Christmas single
that has sold worldwide, or even
climbing to Mount Everest’s
Base Camp. We can assure you
that you will get out of Wells as
much as you put in.
Wells produces excellent
examination results, largely due
to the high standard of teaching
provision but also due to the
purposeful dedication of its
pupils to fulfil their academic
potential.
www.wells-cathedral-school.com
45
Young people value ideals and
adventure. The creative arts
continue to be a focal interest
in the Senior school. The
curriculum at Wells focuses on
a freeing of the spirit to allow
its pupils to engage in creative
and imaginative thought whether
in maths or music, science or
drama, languages or dance. There
is an emphasis on freedom and
human growth with no limits set
on what a person can or should
achieve. It provides a framework
in which to meet the rapidly
changing needs of society: a
brilliant foundation for life.
If you love drama you will feel
very much at home participating
in one of the school’s excellent
perfomances. If art is your
passion then you will be given
the opportunity to work in
our large, dedicated art block
which contains all the materials
and space you need to let your
creativity flow. If you are a
musician, whatever your ability,
you can take advantage of the
exeptional opportunities on
offer. Being a specialist music
school, the facilities at Wells are
second to none.
The Lower School (Years 7, 8
and 9) builds on the support
and development that have
been provided at junior level.
Care is taken to match the
pace of progress to individual
ability. As you move through
the Lower School, you will take
increasing responsibility for your
own academic and personal
development.
In the Upper School (Years 10
and 11) you will prepare for
your GCSE examinations. You
will be allowed to choose four
GCSE options in addition to the
core subjects of Mathematics,
English Language and Literature,
Science (Biology, Chemistry and
Physics) and Religious Studies.
Wells has developed a
programme with enrichment and
acceleration in mind. You will be
offered different pathways and
thus be able to personalise your
learning to follow a curriculum
at a pace and in a direction
which suits your needs and plays
to your strengths.
The school plays a creative
and influential part in the
formation of national policy in
education and music education.
Academically it has never been
afraid to embrace new ideas,
including teaching Mandarin,
International GCSE in Maths,
Extended Project Qualification
(EPQ) at A Level, and Integrated
Arts in Years 7-9.
Recently we introduced our
Specialist Maths Scheme for
pupils starting in Year 7 with
exceptional ability. This allows
the mathematically gifted to fulfil
their passion and at the same
time achieve their maximum
potential.
Recognising that all pupils need
a proper balance of recreation
and physical exercise means
that as well as sport, drama, and
music, less conventional outdoor
pursuits are part of the Lower
School curriculum.
Pictured here are Geography
and Geology pupils enjoying a
recent field trip to Iceland. In
recent years we have organised
a twinning initiative with a music
academy and a primary school
in Sierra Leone, where a trip
is run each year, and we have
formed charitable links with a
village in Sri Lanka. But you don’t
have to get on an aeroplane to
enjoy our various co-curricular
opportunities, such as our
Combined Cadet Force (CCF)
which allows boys and girls to
experience a taste of military life
by learning survival techniques
and leadership skills.
Every year all pupils in Year 8
are invited to attend a weeklong
trip to nearby Skern Lodge,
where you will participate in
outdoor pursuits and team
building exercises.
From Year 9 you will be
encouraged to participate in
the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
scheme. This offers an individual
challenge and will encourage
you to undertake exciting,
constructive, challenging and
enjoyable activities in your free
time.
Sport plays a vital role at Wells.
We compete against other
schools both at home and away,
and we also organise inter-house
events. Our main sports are
athletics, cricket, cross-country,
football, hockey, gymnastics,
netball, rounders, rugby and
tennis.
We have excellent facilities: a
year-round swimming pool, a
sports hall and fitness suite, a
dance studio, tennis and netball
courts and an astroturf pitch.
Our extensive grounds include
a 3.5 acre athletics field and
several sports pitches.
PE lessons introduce new
areas of physical activities to
the pupils, such as badminton,
basketball and gymnastics. GCSE,
AS and A2 Physical Education
are popular courses.
The Senior School builds on the
skills learned at junior level with
a wide range of expert coaching
by dedicated sports teachers.
The Mendip Hills lie to the
north of Wells. The central
and western Mendips were
designated an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty in
1972. The main habitat on these
hills is grassland, with some
arable agriculture. To the north
of the Mendip Hills is the Chew
Valley and to the south are
broad valleys which drain into
the Somerset Levels.
There is an extensive network
of caves near Wells, including
Wookey Hole, (pictured) and
those at Cheddar. The limestone
hills also feature gorges,
including Cheddar Gorge and
Ebbor Gorge, and underground
rivers.
There is no end to the
opportunities that we can offer
just using some of the natural
resources on our doorstep:
outdoor pursuits, such as caving,
rock climbing, orienteering and
abseiling can all be organised in
this awesome landscape. We also
run a sailing club which is held at
a local reservoir in Cheddar.
The Sixth Form
58 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
The Sixth Form at Wells is a
brilliant foundation for life: a
time of hard work, challenges
and possibilities.
You will enjoy a sense of greater
freedom and independence,
whereby you will be encouraged
to become self motivated and
you will be expected to work
hard.
Outside the classroom, Sixth
Formers are leaders of the
school community and should
see themselves as role models
for younger pupils. Everyone
in the Sixth Form has the
opportunity to lead from
within one of the many student
committees.
The social calendar is busy and
rewarding, kindling a strong
sense of camaraderie and
lifelong friendships. Alongside
theatre trips, parties and pizza
evenings, students can join in a
wide variety of activities which
focus on career development,
opportunities for leadership,
teamwork and cultural
development.
The vast majority of students at
Wells progress to some form
of Higher Education. Advice
is given at the stages when
important choices are made
which may affect possibilities
for further study. We have a fulltime
specialist Careers / Higher
Education advisor on site to
guide you through this crucial
time of your education.
Many of our specialist musicians
continue their musical studies at
the country’s top music colleges.
Our Music Faculty staff have
well-developed relationships
with the leading colleges and
conservatoires and will be able
to help you to choose your next
path.
In the summer term of Year 12
(the Lower Sixth), the school
organises an open morning for
parents on the subject of higher
education, which involves not
only staff from the school but
also admissions tutors from
universities, and local careers
guidance officers.
Wells is at the forefront of Sixth
Form curriculum development.
Our approach is innovative and
different from other schools and
colleges.
We have chosen consciously
to make A Levels the academic
course of the Sixth Form. We
believe that together with the
opportunity to work for the EPQ
(Extended Project Qualification)
this provides the best structure
for both specialisation and
breadth.
Sporting opportunities are
continued into the Sixth Form,
with the chance to take advantage
of the school’s excellent facilities
and also to participate in matches.
By continuing sport into the Sixth
Form, your leadership as well as
team-playing skills are tested and
improved upon, and we expect
everyone to keep fit!
Wells also provides a full and rich
programme around and beyond
academic choices.
You will be encouraged to commit
to a range of other activities
such as music, sport, drama,
public speaking, Combined Cadet
Force, Young Enterprise, the Duke
of Edinburgh’s Award scheme,
community service, the Model
United Nations and many others.
All pupils in Year 12 take the
International Computer Driving
Licence and also a course in
critical thinking.
The countryside around Wells
is full of interesting landmarks
and historical associations.
They include the legendary
Glastonbury Tor, some nine
miles from Wells. The Tor
features the roofless St. Michael’s
Tower, a grade I listed building
managed by the National Trust.
Roman remains suggest early
settlements, and further
excavations on the Tor have
revealed evidence of Dark Age
occupation.
The Tor has been associated
with Arthurian legend, since the
alleged discovery of King Arthur
and Queen Guinevere’s labelled
coffins in 1191. It has been
suggested that the Tor could be
one of the locations of the Holy
Grail due to its proximity to the
location of the monastery that
housed the Nanteos Cup.

Chorister Life
72 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
A choir of men and boys has
been singing in the stunning
setting of Wells Cathedral for
over 1100 years. In 1994, Wells
Cathedral became one of the
first to launch a girls’ choir.
Today, the Cathedral Choir,
considered to be one of the
finest in the world, consists of
eighteen boy and eighteen girl
choristers (two separate choirs)
and twelve men known as Vicars’
Choral.
The Choristers receive
scholarships to sing in the choir,
gaining a first-class training in
singing and choral music, but
also benefiting from all the usual
curricular and co-curricular
activities at school. Should you
become a Chorister, you will
find yourself working as part of
a close-knit team, and you will
also develop a sense of selfdiscipline
and self-service.
The choir sings every day in
Wells Cathedral during term
time and at major festivals, and
has an extensive repertoire from
all historical periods. Alongside
Cathedral services, the choir
performs recitals, national radio
and television broadcasts and
regular international tours.
Wells Cathedral is one of the
most impressive of the English
Gothic cathedrals, having
survived eight centuries, with all
of its associated buildings still
around it, dominating the city of
Wells.
Wells Cathedral lies at the heart
of the Cathedral School, as it
has over the last 1100 years of
its history. The regular exposure
to one of the most awe-inspiring
buildings in the world is a
privilege enjoyed by all.
The link with the cathedral
bestows upon the school an
ethos where work, study and
spirituality are combined in
a creative mix that runs in
harmony with the entire school
family. Pupils are inspired to
live with integrity and social
responsibility, upholding our
Christian tradition.
Wells is a school where pupils
are shown the way to live well
and happily. At its heart is a
sense of empowerment and
inner fulfilment.

The Music Faculty
Music at Wells
78 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
Music has been at the heart of
Wells since its beginnings as
a chorister school. Today it is
the only specialist music school
to run in parallel to a regular,
independent school. The music
community is unique, so that
whether you are a beginner
or an expert you can follow
your own musical passions.
You will be part of a musical
and joyful environment which
allows everyone to explore
and find their own pathway and
develop an appreciation and love
of music. For extraordinarily
talented musicians the
ordinariness of Wells is a distinct
advantage; for students who are
not musicians, the extraordinary
musical provision provides
incredible opportunities.
79
80 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
The Specialist Music Scheme
provides high quality
opportunities to participate
in and experience musical
excellence. If you have
discovered that your life
revolves around music making
then you should be at Wells.
It is a course for highly gifted
young people who wish to
consider a career in music. As a
Specialist Musician you will be
offered a wide range of choices
and opportunities to help you
achieve your full potential; you
will be taught by highly skilled
music teachers, many of whom
may be international artists.
Most Specialists leave Wells to
study at the main conservatoires
in the UK or abroad, often gaining
scholarships at the institution of
their choice.
The Well-Rounded Performer
82 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
Specialist Musicians live and
learn with people who have
other interests and different
preoccupations. This helps
you to maintain a perspective
and become rounder and
better balanced without the
side-effects of ‘hot-housing’
sometimes associated with early
specialisation. This means you
will be more able to cope with
the rigours imposed by a highlevel
musical environment at
conservatoire.
How we do it
84 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
Wells provides strong musical
and technical foundations for
long-term participation in music
making and a career in the
profession. The wide repertoire
and range of musical genres
helps prepare you for a life in
which flexibility and adaptability
will be needed and frequent
visits from external experts will
widen your musical perspectives.
Wells pupils are offered
regular performance and tour
opportunities in both the UK
and international locations.
Wells Cathedral School
prides itself on a very busy
and successful concert diary
with almost 200 annual events.
Within this there is a Prestige
Concert Series of the highest
calibre including symphonic
and choral programmes, plus
the opportunity to perform
alongside internationally
renowned composers and
musicians. Many pupils hold
principal chairs in the National
Youth Orchestra, National Youth
Wind Orchestra and many other
similar groups.
“What I love about Wells Cathedral
School is its tremendous spirit
of adventure. It’s a forum where
young people can engage with
music on every possible level. The
ethos of Dorothy Nancekievill and
her team is fabulously holistic;
their view being that music should
never be experienced in a bubble,
and that it has a huge and vital
role to play in the community at
large. Budding young musicians of
‘whatever sort’ who come to Wells
can be assured of the broadest,
most boundary crossing and
exhilarating journey.”
Cheddar Cheese
Cheddar is the most popular
cheese in the United Kingdom,
and the second most popular
cheese in the United States.
The cheese comes from the
village of Cheddar, some eight
miles west of Wells. Cheddar
Gorge, on the edge of the village,
contains a number of caves
which provide the ideal humidity
and stable temperature for
maturing the cheese.
Records date back as far as
1170, when Henry II ordered
4644 kg of the original cheese.
By the reign of King Charles
I, the cheese was so popular
that it had to be pre-ordered
through the king’s court. It is
also documented that Captain
Scott took with him nearly
1600kg of Cheddar cheese on
his famous expedition to the
Antarctic in 1901.
Boarding Life
94 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
In the Junior School and Lower
School, boarders are housed
close to the main school campus
with resident house parents,
supported by an assistant, a team
of house tutors and a matron.
In the Senior School, life centres
on the mediaeval and eighteenth
century buildings that line
The Liberty. Each house is the
focal point for group identity,
friendship and relaxation, with
healthy rivalries between houses
in sport, drama, public speaking
and other academic achievement.
Flexi-boarding is also available,
from one night through to
weekly or even weekend
boarding. Many pupils and
parents find this to be an
extremely useful option, as it
allows pupils the opportunity
to participate in after-school
clubs as well as to keep up with
homework while avoiding a late
journey home.
All rooms have ICT facilities
with wireless internet access.
You can bring your own PC and
other equipment, and all houses
have common rooms with games
and equipment for the boarders
to use. There are also large
gardens for you to relax in and
the kitchens are stocked with
your favourite foods.
98 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
The school chefs provide three
cooked meals a day, including
a vegetarian option and salad
bar in a modern, airy dining
hall. Older pupils may also use
the separate snack bar which
provides healthy snack options,
when schedules become hectic.
The dining hall is a place for
pupils to meet and enjoy healthy
fresh food and catch up with
friends. You will have access to
your houses throughout the
day and you can make toast
and sandwiches in the house
kitchens.
Being Green
102 www.wells-cathedral-school.com
At Wells, we recognise that
taking responsibility for our
impact on the environment is an
important commitment to the
future sustainability of the world
in which we live.
Opportunities to become
involved in environmental
initiatives within and beyond
the school exist throughout the
Junior and Senior Schools and
curriculum time is specifically
devoted to practical green
activities in Years 7 and 8.
Students and staff work closely
together in the planning and
delivery of measures designed to
make Wells a more sustainable
place.
As part of our commitment to
the local community we have
forged links with other schools
in order to allow students to
share ideas and colleagues to
share good practice.
Cider is a fermented alcoholic
beverage made from apple juice.
It may be made from any variety
of eating apple, but certain
cultivars grown solely for use in
cider are known as cider apples,
which are grown in South West
England.
Cider apples are richer in
tannins and sharper in flavour.
There are many cider farms in
the South West, and typically
they produce non-carbonated,
cloudy-orange cider, which is
produced on a small scale and
sold locally.
