About the CAA
The Camano Arts Association (CAA) began as
a result of a handful of local artists coming together
with a simple idea: a gallery walk over Mother's
Day weekend. That was in 1998. Over the years
the group has grown to include more than 100
members and the little gallery walk has become
one of the most recognized art events in the region,
attracting thousands from all over the region,
the country and the world.
I paint my own reality.
The only thing I know
is that I paint because I need to,
and I paint whatever passes through my head
.
without any other consideration.
- Frida Kahlo
Chicken vs. Egg
The concentration of artists on this small, out-of-the
way island is unique. These are not hobbyists but
professional, full-time artists, many of whom are
well-known throughout the art world. If asked,
artists will mention the phenomenal beauty of the
area as one reason they made their way to Camano
Island. But there is also a sense of community that
lifts up and supports art in very tangible ways.
So did the Island attract the artists or did the artists
make more known the beauty of the island?
It's hard to say.
History
Founded in 1998 by a small group of local artists
and gallery owners who wanted to see a community
art walk take place over Mother's Day weekend.
The first year, fewer than 500 visitors came through
the tour. Today, more than 4,000 attend each year.
Established non-profit status in 2000, electing a board
and bylaws. Reached 100 members in 2009.
Launched scholarship program with local High School
in 2001.
Launched visiting artist program with Stanwood High
School in 2006.
Began regular community “artreach” events: Art in Action
aimed at local kids to engage them with hands-on art
education; Artists in Action aimed at the larger community
with public events hosted at local Haggen outlets.
Added an additional weekend to the Mother's Day Studio
Tour in 2010 to address growing crowds.
Diversity
While visual arts dominate the community of artists
involved with the CAA, there is no limit to the
medium or style used. From Russian impressionist
inspired artists who work in acrylic, to landscape
water color painters, to weavers, potters, and
welders of imaginative metal sculpture, the variety
of art to be found on Camano Island is astounding.
And with the Pilchuck Glass School located nearby,
some of the very best glass blowers and artists in the
world have called Camano Island home, even if for
a short while.
Art as Legacy
As is true with many artists, those who call Camano
Island home also are in a constant pursuit of a style,
form or image that is somehow always just out of
reach. It is their love of art that keeps them working
at it. Out of that love is born a commitment to
improvement that translates into classes that many
members teach on a regular basis. There is also a
deep connection to the local youth: many CAA members
teach classes at the high school, the group holds art
events and provides scholarships to study art, and
members simply enjoy inspiring future artists. Art truly
does live on Camano Island. And it is here to stay.
Visiting Artist Program
The CAA works closely with local
high school and youth groups to
ensure arts education continues
in rural communities.
Local youth are able to take
advantage of the unique
concentration of artists living on
and near Camano Island and
members of CAA regularly teach
in the AP Arts Class at Stanwood
High School.
Hands-on teaching and education
from artists who make a living in
art is a rare opportunity, even in
the most elite private schools.
But in Stanwood and on Camano
Island, art is part of the fabric
of the community and local artists
with the CAA ensure that it will
remain so for years to come
through their tireless dedication
to youth education.
Kathy Hastings
Scholarship Program
Many of the local artists on
Camano Island studied at art
schools or under the creative
guidance of great masters.
They understand the value of
a dedicated arts education;
thus, in addition to mentoring
local students, the CAA also
encourages art with a scholarship
program that provides the most
exceptional local student artists
with funds to study art in a
higher education environment.
Past winners have gone on to
study at Savannah College of
Art and Design in Savannah,
Georgia; Pratt Institute in Brooklyn,
New York; Brooks Institute in
Santa Barbara, California;
Maryland Institute College of Art
in Baltimore, Maryland; and
University of California, Berkley.
Art is the only way
to run away
without
leaving
home. ~Twyla Tharp
Local schools with CAA
scholarship-awarded students
include Central Washington
University in Ellensburg; Everett
Community College in Everett;
Western Washington
University in Bellingham; and
The Art Institute of Seattle.
It isn't enough just to teach local students about art and encourage their pursuit of art
in their careers. The CAA also exposes local student artists to the real world of art showings
by including top entries in their annual Mother's Day Studio Tour.
This is a unique opportunity for aspiring young artists to get their first taste of a real art show
with hundreds of local artists and mentors supporting them.
It's not just a passion loosened by the stroke of a paintbrush or the sound of chisel against stone.
It's not just a dedication to the development of professional art in the community.
It's a commitment to youth, an embracement of potential,
a recognition that daydreams and imagination lead to ingenuity and growth.
The Camano Arts Association builds
art education opportunities for local
children and teens through multiple
community events that encourage
interaction with art and cultivate art
appreciation.
Specific to teens, CAA members work
closely with Stanwood High School
to provide hands-on mentorship
in the classroom and encourage
student participation in the annual
Studio Tour, through which the best
student artist is invited to show
his/her work at the exclusive event.
Additionally, the CAA provides several
scholarships for local students to
continue their arts education studies
beyond high school.
This dedication to arts education is
rooted in a passion for art and a very
real understanding of the lasting value
arts education provides.
The following sampling of facts, compiled
from the National Arts Education Association
and other national research institutes,
demonstrates the value Camano's art
community ascribes to art education,
interaction and appreciation in the success
of this and future generations.
Elementary students who attend
schools in which the arts were
integrated with classroom curriculum
outperformed their peers in math who
did not have an arts-integrated
curriculum.
Artistically talented but academically
at-risk 4th, 5th, and 6th grade urban
students who were involved over the
course of three years in arts training
made greater gains in reading than
those with no arts training.
Students who attend schools in which
the arts are integrated with classroom
curriculum outperform their peers
in reading who do not have an arts
integrated curriculum.
Students who reported the highest level
of instruction in the arts, either in school
or out, score higher on tests measuring
expression, positive risk taking, creativity,
imagination and cooperative learning.
Regular exposure to diverse artistic
education results in higher scores for
language development with Head Start
children.
Creative art education in both visual arts
and drama have proven to improve
behavior and speaking skills with
learning-disabled children.
A 2002 study of rural high school students
demonstrated that art instruction and
creative writing courses improved speaking
skills and self image.
In Washington state, K-12 funding covers
five classes per day. Most arts classes
are taught as an additional sixth class
and funding must often be found outside
of traditional resources.
With budgets tightening, it is often arts
and music programs that are cut first
from school curriculum.
Island
2012 Studio Tour
Camano
A memory in the making.
Since its debut in 1998, the Camano Island Studio
Tour is just that. A memory in the making.
Two weekends in May, over 60 local artists, at their
studios and in dynamic galleries, will display some
of the most vibrant work created in the Northwest.
The talent is great, the techniques are many.
Encaustics, photography, wood-working, fiber art,
jewelry, lampworking, glass design, painting,
sculpture — the mediums and tricks of the trade
run endless. As do the personal stories, exciting
discoveries and fun-filled anecdotes the artists share
during the tour as they personally meet with guests
and provide demonstrations of their skills.
Throughout the self-guided tour, you’ll discover favorite
artists to follow and artworks to treasure — plus a few
nooks and crannies of the island to explore.
Your studio tour includes a backdrop of wide sandy
beaches, bluffs overlooking Utsalady Bay and Saratoga
Passage, and stately evergreen forests filled with wildlife.
Camano Island State Park and Cama Beach State Park
are marked with hiking and walking trails where you can
enjoy beachcombing, clam digging, kite flying, bird watching
and botanizing. And don’t forget the picnic lunch!
Children especially love Freedom Park next to
the Camano Gateway Tourist Information Center.
The park, built completely from donated time
and materials, includes a playground, picnic
areas, sculptures and plenty of room to roam.
The island’s sister city, Stanwood, also hosts
places to stretch your legs and capture a few
photos. Heritage Park and Church Creek Park
are both located in town where two studio tour
galleries are located. A third Stanwood gallery
site is located a short distance from town, in a
pastoral setting near Lake Ketchum.
The Camano Island Studio Tour attracts thousands
to this small, beautiful location where visitors are
rarely more than half a mile from the next studio
or gallery. With the area’s variety of eateries,
quaint shops, family-centered parks, inviting bed
and breakfasts, and eighteen-hole golf course,
the Studio Tour boasts the best of big city style
in the presence of small-town charm
And because there is no need to take a ferry to the
island, the studio tour is all the more inviting for
those who don’t want to worry about schedules or
timetables.
Tips for Enjoying the Studio Tour
The Camano Island Studio Tour is a self-guided tour, meaning you
can design your own experience. Over 60 local artists will be on hand
to describe their work, their tools and their inspirations. Art selections,
ranging from jewelry and wearables to ceramics and sculpture, acrylics
and watercolors to oils and pastels, are available for purchase.
Keep in mind, not all artists accept credit cards, so having cash on hand
is helpful.
If you’d like to extend your tour into a full weekend’s adventure, consider
reserving a room at one of Camano Island’s bed and breakfasts or at the
Medallion Hotel located a short distance away in Marysville.
