INTRODUCTION 


The Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) has successfully established 

itself as one of Southeast Asia’s leading institutions for 

social science postgraduate research and teaching. The 

origin of AEI can be traced back to the idea of establishing 

closer higher education linkages between Asia and Europe 

under the provisions of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) 

initiative in 1996. 

In 1997, the Government of Malaysia established the 

Asia-Europe Centre (AEC), the first step of Asia-Europe 

University cooperation in education designed to support 

the Fourth Pillar of the ASEM process. Three years after 

its inception, on 2 January 2000, the AEC was transformed 

into a full-fledged academic institution. It was renamed 

Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) and hosted by the University 

of Malaya, the oldest university in Malaysia. 

Over the years, AEI has received continued support from 

the Government of Malaysia, working in partnership with 

other ASEM countries. This reflects Malaysia’s commitment 

towards internationalisation of higher education and also 

the advancement of the idea of AEI as an educational hub 

that provides a network of knowledge infrastructure and 

sharing for Asia and Europe in the twenty-first century. 

The core objective of AEI is to further develop 

Asia-Europe relations in higher education by providing 

opportunities for post-graduate studies for career 

advancement as well as to enhance the academic and 

cultural experience of students and scholars, with a 

view to developing in them, a better understanding of 

the cultures, history, politics, institutions, economics, 

business and legal practices of both regions. It aims to 

be a place where intellectual discourses are held and key 

issues on globalisation and regionalisation, environment, 

international business, innovation and technologies and 

inter-regional relations between Asia and Europe are 

examined. Our research pillars and range of international 

postgraduate courses indicate the breadth and quality 

of expertise that the AEI can bring to bear. As such, our 

postgraduate programmes and students are central to 

the realisation of a collaborative and innovative education 

hub for the future.

IN INFORMATION 

MANAGEMENT (IMIM) 

Given the gaps in information and knowledge both within and between countries, 

especially between Asia and Europe, this programme will promote local and global 

sharing of new information and communication technologies much needed in the 21st 

century. The impact of the New Economy on organisational structures, management, 

and development processes requires a strong grounding in economics of information and 

organisational systems that promote information sharing. This Postgraduate programme 

is designed to offer breadth of content, intellectual depth, and rigour complemented with 

attention to a wide range of applications and case studies. It will be of relevance to business 

managers as well as those concerned with organizational development, internet, and new 

media training, e-Commerce, also research analysts and others.

OBJECTIVE 

The increasing globalisation of business, the expansion of 

information technology (IT) and competition for markets 

mean that participation in the business world expertise 

of the knowledge economy (K-Economy). Skills that 

have been identified for the new economy transcend 

many disciplines such as computing, economics, and 

organisational studies. Popular subjects associated with 

the K-Economy include fields such as management, 

economics, and marketing. This particular programme is 

designed by AEI to develop this expertise by equipping 

students with specialist knowledge of the link between 

ICT and K-Economy and the business environment in 

Asia and Europe. Such skills are invaluable to small-scale 

enterprises, multinational corporations, and policy makers 

in the region to ensure competitive edge and success in 

a global market. 

CAREER OPPORTUNITY 

This programme is designed for students for whom 

an MA will be a prelude to careers in fields related to 

business, international, regional, governmental and nongovernmental 

organisations, or any career where advanced 

knowledge of information management in business 

and marketing coupled with an advanced capacity to 

communicate effectively will be an advantage. It will appeal 

particularly to those with an interest in the utilisation and 

management of IT in government institutions and business 

enterprises.

INTERNATIONAL 

MASTERS IN REGIONAL 

INTEGRATION (IMRI) 

This International Masters in Regional Integration programme examines the origins 

and consequences (for nation states as well as firms and citizens) of efforts and 

strategies to redraw boundaries of authority at the regional level in the context of 

intensified globalisation. Using an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, the 

programme focuses on explanations of the intensity and type of authority shift to regional 

institutions across issues and across regions. It places particular emphasis on understanding 

the relationship between regional integration and processes of economic globalisation, the 

development of new forms of governance, and the reconfiguration of the state.

The programme aims to critically assess the significance 

of regional integration in terms of theoretical, conceptual 

and empirical debates from a range of social science 

disciplines. On completion of this programme, students 

should have: 

• Arrived at an informed understanding of how regional 

integration and globalisation are conceptualised and 

theorised; 

• Interpreted current processes associated with regional 

integration, including national development, economic 

interdependence and globalisation, the emergence of 

new forms of governance, the structural context in 

which these take place and their political, economic, 

legal and social consequences; and

IN SMALL AND MEDIUM 

ENTERPRISES (IMSME) 

This International Masters in Small and Medium Enterprises programme is designed 

for students who wish to enhance the development of entrepreneurial skills and 

managerial capacity in order to ensure the viability and continuity of SMEs over time. 

The focus of the programme is to provide an understanding of the strength of both 

Asian and European social and economic contexts in which SMEs operate, as well as the 

methodologies, technicalities and tools that allow a better structured decisional process and a 

more conscious management of the business. The intercultural setting of the programme will 

also enhance the ability of prospective managers and government executives to strengthen 

economic cooperation between EU and East Asia.

The programme aims to critically assess the significance of 

small and medium enterprises in the context of a changing 

global economy. On completion of this programme, 

students should have: 

• Acquired the methodologies and managerial tools 

created or adapted for SMEs reality and, through field 

projects, verified the operational validity of those 

methodologies and tools; 

• Developed capabilities and aptitudes coherent with 

the organisational context of SMEs, less formal but 

more creative, flexible and light; 

• Analysed the strengths and weaknesses of family 

business, the cultural and social context in which they 

operate and the economic relationships with other 

firms, and produced outputs of immediate use for the 

participants as well as for the targeted companies; 

and 

• Developed key transferable analytical, interpretative, 

organisational, written and oral presentational skills.

IN ASEAN STUDIES (IMAS) 

This International Masters in ASEAN Studies programme provides an advanced level 

of understanding of the political, economic, social and cultural forces which shape 

ASEAN as well as the attendant policy process in a range of issue areas. It does so 

through a consideration of four aspects of ASEAN: 

• To offer an analysis of the historical, social and cultural forces that have shaped Southeast 

Asia as a macro-region in the world order; 

• To consider the contested nature of theoretical concepts – how the same basic categories are 

understood in partially different ways in competing theoretical approaches to regionalism 

and regionalisation, and how some concepts belong more to some theories than to others; 

• To assess the institutional arrangements, changing policy agenda and governance issues 

of ASEAN in the contemporary period; and 

• To compare the key characteristics of ASEAN with analogous developments in regional 

associations elsewhere in the world.

A PhD programme by research offers the candidate the 

opportunity to hone his/her skills in both research and 

academic writing. The candidate’s research findings are 

expected to contribute new insights into his/her particular 

area of research. The candidate is greatly encouraged 

to carry out research in the field of Social Sciences and 

Humanities that is multidisciplinary and comparative in 

nature encompassing any country or region within Asia 

and Europe.

Programme Requirement 



Semester I of the academic year commences in September while Semester II 

commences in February 

Research 

This PhD programme is purely based on individual supervised research. Although 

research is the principal requirement for attaining the degree, students are also 

required to pass a Research Methodology Course, present his/her progress 

through a candidature defense seminar, and publish research articles in journals 

as part of the programme requirements.

Requirements 

The candidate is required to fulfill the following candidature requirements before 3-Months’ Notice of submission 

of his/her thesis: 

1. Fulfill the minimum candidature duration of 4 semesters. 

2. Fulfill the University language requirement (Bahasa Malaysia and English).

Fulfill the residential requirement of 12 months: 

A Candidate is considered to have fulfilled the residential requirement if he/she has completed requirements 4,

Publication Requirement: 

Candidate pursuing a programme in the field of Social Science must show proof of acceptance of publication 

for at least one paper in an ISI (WOS) journals or at least two papers in the category A or B refereed journals 

recognised by the Asia-Europe Institute prior to viva-voce and the Committee of Examiners meeting. 

IMPORTANCE NOTICE: Candidates are also required to fulfil any additional requirements imposed by the Asia-Europe 

Institute. 

SUPERVISION 

Each candidate shall be supervised by an experienced 

professor based on the candidate’s field of study. It is the 

responsibility of the candidate to approach and seek the 

agreement of a potential supervisor to supervise his PhD

information on potential supervisors). The research proposal 

shall be approved by the supervisor and endorsed by AEI. 

PROPOSAL 

The PhD proposal should demonstrate a well thought 

preliminary understanding of the chosen topic, and an 

indication of the parameters of the research. The length of 

the proposal should not exceed 2,500 words, which shall 

include an introduction on the topic; statement of problem 

or issue to be addressed; research questions; methodology; 

theoretical framework; a literature review; and a list of 

references. The proposal is an integral and crucial part of 

the application process.

I. INTERNATIONAL MASTERS 

(a) Academic Qualification 

The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s degree (CGPA 3.00 and above) or an equivalent qualification in a relevant 

discipline from a recognised university. 

(b) Language Requirements 

(i) Malaysian Applicant 

A candidate who is a Malaysian citizen shall be required to possess at least a pass in Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa 

Malaysia and English Language at the level of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). 

II. PhD 

(ii) International Applicant 

English Language Requirement: For International Candidates whose degree is from a university where the medium 

of instruction is not English, a minimum score in one of the following standard English Language tests is required: 

• TOEFL (paper-based) – 550 or more 

• TOEFL (computer-based) – 213 or more 

• TOEFL (internet-based) – 80 or more 

• IELTS (Academic) – Band 6 or higher 

Bahasa Malaysia Requirement: Candidates are required to attend and pass the Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian 

Language) course which is a requirement for the award of the International Masters degree. The objective of 

this course is to introduce students to basic understanding and knowledge of the language which is the native 

language of Malaysia. However, international candidates who may already possess a pass in Bahasa Malaysia with 

a certificate from a recognized institution may be exempted from taking the Bahasa Malaysia course.

AEI FINANCIAL 

ASSISTANT SCHEME 

The Asia-Europe Institute Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS), has been instituted with the aim of encouraging and 

supporting deserving Malaysians and non-Malaysians to pursue International Masters programmes, exclusively at AEI. 

SELECTION CRITERIA : 

• Has gained admission into any of the AEI International Masters Programmes; 

• A Bachelor’s degree with honours or its equivalent (CGPA 3.30 and above); 

• Possess good personality and leadership skills; and/or 

• Relevant working experience (minimum 3 years). 

DETAILS: 

• The Scheme is offered to the International Masters candidates for a maximum duration of 1 (one) academic session 

(September-August) 

• The FAS amounts to:

INTRODUCTION 

The internship Programme forms an integral component of each of the four International Masters degree programmes at 

the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), University of Malaya (UM). It is worth 4 credits and is mandatory as a partial fulfillment 

for the award of the respective degrees. Students undertake the internship after they have completed the taught courses 

relevant to each programme. 

DEFINITION OF INTERNSHIP 

“Internship” refers to a programme meant to provide supervised practical training or learning over a specified time 

frame. The training may be conducted at a public or private institution or organization. 

OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP 

The internship is to provide the students with relevant up-to-date supplementary and complementary knowledge on, as 

well as practical experience in, their respective areas of study. This will help develop in them the necessary knowledge 

and basic expertise prior to stepping into the career world after graduation. The internship also serves to provide the 

students with a general idea of employment prospects and opportunities for the International Masters degrees that they 

will hold. 

Where applicable, students shall also use the internship period to gather data for their Project Paper. 

SCOPE OF INTERNSHIP 

An arrangement will be made between AEI and the prospective host institutions that each student be given an 

assignment relevant to his/her area of study which would offer him/her the opportunity to utilise the knowledge 

gained in the classroom as well as to gain exposure to relevant, on-the-job practices. The host institution shall provide 

the appropriate supervision and guidance to the students and give constructive feedback on individual student’s 

performance over the duration of the internship. 

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP 

The students shall normally begin their internship programme in April of each year, after they have completed the 

second (final) semester of their lectures and all arrangements for the internship have been finalised. The duration of the 

internship for students pursuing the IMIM, IMRI, IMSME and IMAS programmes shall be eight (8) weeks. This duration 

is considered adequate for the students to gain in-depth understanding of and valuable insights into the practical 

aspects of their respective programmes of study. However, the exact duration may vary, subject to the procedures and 

requirements of the host institutions. 

HOST/PLACEMENT INSTITUTIONS 

Students shall be placed for internship at appropriate institutions where the scope of functions or business enterprises is 

closely related to the students’ areas of study. Students are encouraged to find and decide on the placement institutions 

of their choice as early as possible upon their enrolment into their respective International Masters programmes. AEI 

shall also provide the necessary assistance in seeking placement institutions. The institutions may be in any country in 

the world. However, students are discouraged from undergoing internship in their own respective countries. This is to 

ensure that they are also exposed to knowledge and experiences of cultures other than their own.

Apart from the Masters and PhD programmes, students also have the opportunity to enhance their academic experience 

through academic-cum-social activities provided by the Institute such as the following:
