Domestic Abuse
During recent months key partners have
been working together to produce a new
Domestic Abuse Strategy for 2015-18 and
establish priority actions for the next twelve
months. The strategy sets out a vision and
objectives to reduce the incidence and impact
of domestic abuse in Kirklees delivering high
quality services to victims. Working across all
tiers of need, support will be provided from an
early intervention level when issues are first
recognised, through to high risk cases where
impact is likely to be significant.
The strategy has built on national guidelines
and policies and the Domestic Abuse Needs
Assessment undertaken by Kirklees Public
Health earlier this year; it links to wider
Kirklees strategies including the Safer
Stronger Communities Plan, Joint Health
and Wellbeing Strategy and the work of the
Local Safeguarding Children’s Board and
Adults Safeguarding Board. The strategy has
been produced in collaboration with local
managers from the statutory and voluntary
sectors and recently agreed by the Domestic
Abuse Strategy Partnership and endorsed by
the Safer Stronger Communities Executive.
During coming months, it will be shared
on websites and discussed at the Adults
Safeguarding Board and Health and Wellbeing
Board; a presentation was also made in July
to the Local Children’s Safeguarding Board.
Priorities for the first year include:
• Expansion of Independent Domestic
Violence Advocacy Service to meet needs of
people with mental health and substance
misuse problems, targeted support for
young people, support for victims through
domestic violence prevention orders and
in court, help in Accident and Emergency
departments
• Development of targeted campaigns to
raise awareness of domestic abuse
• Agreement of pathways and referral routes
into services at all tiers of need
• As part of a West Yorkshire programme,
increase perpetrator work
• Further analysis of good practice locally
and nationally to improve understanding of
domestic abuse issues, improve support and
inform future commissioning
• Establish gaps in training to shape
workforce development programme
