Safeguarding Network Event
Making Safeguarding Personal is about:
• Enabling people to have more control in how
safeguarding happened and to decide on the
process that would work best for them.
• Making sure that people being safeguarded
are better informed about what safeguarding
is, the process that may be followed and
how they might be involved in deciding what
outcomes they wanted.
• Making sure that people are involved in and
able to influence the process that is followed.
Peer challenge and other work has found
that people can tend to feel driven through a
process in safeguarding, although they may
appreciate the work of individual staff they may
not feel in control of what is happening.
Whilst most people do want to be safer, other
things may be as, or more important, for
example: maintaining family relationships.
In Kirklees we started this work by ensuring
the board were fully committed to taking the
work forward, and by then holding a network
event in partnership with Huddersfield
University.
We were delighted to welcome Jill Manthorpe
Professor of Social Work King’s College
London to talk about ‘What is Making
Safeguarding Personal?’ and Sarah Finlay,
Department of Social Work and Communities
Northumbria University, who gave feedback
from research .We also shared feedback from
a pilot study in Kirklees about how people felt
about Safeguarding in Kirklees
We asked practitioners:
• When I think of the people I work with, what
do I do now to make safeguarding personal?
• What can I do differently in my own everyday
practice to make safeguarding more
personal to meet desired outcomes?
• What suggestions do you have that will
support the Kirklees Adult Safeguarding
Board and all partner organisations
to develop and improve how we make
safeguarding more personal in the future?
Feedback from the event was used to plan
some priority areas of work for a task and
finish group to take forward over the coming
months.
Making Safeguarding Personal network
event feedback
It was an inspiring event that has
allowed valuable networking and
also an arena where practice can be
discussed and exchanged. I thoroughly
enjoyed Jill Manthorpe’s presentation
