The Carlton Colliers
Badapple Theatre Company
Rural touring favourites Badapple Theatre return
with this original comedy with music by Jez
Lowe.
A comic, backstreet fairy tale that sees a
hard-up village transformed forever, almost
over<strong>night</strong>. A hapless bunch of social <strong>out</strong>casts
and local-league cast offs, with barely a stud to
their boots, are transported magically to a whole
other level, a league apart. Watch in wonder, as
their new found success spills over to envelop
the whole village in a swathe of glory.
A quirky comedy ab<strong>out</strong> village life, love and
sometimes football. Ab<strong>out</strong> dreaming big in an
old pit-village and the daft things that start to
happen when you do.
Beryl – A Romance On Two
Wheels
West Yorkshire Playhouse
In 2014, West Yorkshire Playhouse produced
Beryl, a hugely successful play by celebrated
actress Maxine Peake, based on the life of Beryl
Burton, the Yorkshire woman who became a
world champion cyclist in the 1960s.
Beryl was one of the most astonishing sports
people ever to have lived - 5 times world pursuit
champion, twice road-racing world champion
and 12 times national champion. Her accolades
include former world record holder, former
British record holder, numerous sports awards,
an MBE and an OBE. However, with her down
to earth, no-nonsense approach to life and
to success, she remained a mystery. But not
anymore. In a fascinating and truly heartwarming
production (and you don’t need to
know anything ab<strong>out</strong> cycling to enjoy it) this
funny and moving show tells the story of this
remarkable woman.
The Best Thing
Vamos Theatre
‘There’s no other option,’ he said, ‘it is the best
thing.’
The year is 1966. Helen is seventeen, unmarried
and pregnant. Like so many women, she is given
no choice but to give up her child.
Eighteen years later, and her son returns looking
for his mum. But things are not as he imagined:
where is Helen? And what will he discover ab<strong>out</strong>
his life that might have been?
Based on true experiences, The Best Thing is a
wonderfully inventive, humorous and poignant
story of mistaken morals, sexual revolution and
unconditional love from Vamos Theatre, the UK’s
Travels With My
Grandmother’s Guitar
Rosa Rebecka
Swedish singer-songwriter Rosa Rebecka draws
on her family’s rich musical heritage to tell the
tale of a very special instrument in an evening
of mesmerising story and song.
Passed down through four generations of
women, her guitar was first played by her <strong>great</strong>
grandmother on a tiny island on the Swedish
archipelago over a hundred years ago.
Her haunting voice rising above its still bright
tones, Rosa weaves a beautiful, intimate and
moving tale of love, loss, and hope that is as
universal as it is personal.
The Thankful Village
Badapple Theatre Company
Set against the backdrop of World War 1, the
quiet village backwater of Bottledale is changed
forever by the advent of the Great War in
Europe. But the roll of honour stone in the
village square remains empty and un-etched as
the years pass, and folk start to wonder.
This is a story of hope, humour and humanity,
ab<strong>out</strong> the men who went away, and the women
left behind, and the eccentric twists and turns of
daily life that led to their re-uniting, for better
or for worse, in the winter of 1918.
The Thankful Villages were those which lost no
men in the Great War because all those who left
to serve came home again, and there were some
52 settlements in England and Wales with this
title at the end of the conflict.
