Acknowledgments Living Logos was the heart-work of Bro Dale Starks and Sis Josephine Starks, missionaries to Singapore in the early 1980s. As the original authors of this devotionals, the Starks meant for these self-study materials to help new converts (and matured saints alike) get a hold of an understanding of God’s written Word. Since Sis Stark’s passing in 2013, the couple had graciously entrusted Tabernacle of Joy with its copyright. Lesson Two Old Testament 1 Old Testament 1 ISRAEL NEARS THE PROMISED LAND When God brought the children of Israel out of their Egyptian bondage, He promised to bring them into the land of Canaan. There, He would give them their inheritance forever. After over a year of journeying, they were nearing the promised land. Spies were sent out, one from each of the twelve tribes, to check out the land “whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds; and what the land is, whether it be fat or lean” (Numbers 13:19-20). TWO CONFLICTING REPORTS When the twelve spies returned forty days later, Moses, Aaron and the entire congregation gathered to hear their report. The men had brought back with them grapes, pomegranates and figs as samples of the bountiful harvest. It was surely a land like God had promised! Nevertheless, ten of the men gave a bad report: ...The people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan — numbers 13:28-29 ...The land...is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight — numbers 13:32-33 11
