GRAND CHRISTMAS TREE<br />

BY SHANGHAI TANG<br />

A charming fusion of Asian heritage and Chinese chic merges<br />

this year in the form of the hotel’s grand Christmas Tree.<br />

Designed by the pioneering fashion house and curator of<br />

modern Asian aesthetics, Shanghai Tang, the seven-metre tree<br />

incorporates the heritage of Shangri-La together with its own<br />

signature interpretation of Chinese culture and craftsmanship.<br />

As of 17th November, this exclusive creation will sit<br />

marvellously within the Welcome Lobby on the ground floor<br />

and showcase a celebratory and vibrant display.<br />

SHANGHAI TANG ORNAMENTS<br />

Two varieties of custom-made brass ornaments adorn the tree<br />

referencing the auspicious elements of the hulu and double fish.<br />

Both highlight the goodwill and fortune<br />

expressed over a festive period.<br />

'8'<br />

8 is the most auspicious number in Chinese culture. The<br />

pronunciation is very similar to ‘prosper’.<br />

The hulu is an ancient fruit representing fortune and<br />

protection. Shaped as a figure of eight, the hollowed-out fruit<br />

was originally used to carry precious items, as its magical<br />

powers were thought to protect the bearer from evil spirits.<br />

The Fish<br />

In China, the fish is a symbol for good fortune. The double fish<br />

is a symbol of love, harmony and abundance; it is a metaphor<br />

for a harmonised state associated with<br />

a blissful, romantic union.<br />

Each ornament is draped with a luxurious printed star ribbon in<br />

pops of red, blue and yellow, its vibrancy reflecting Shanghai<br />

Tang’s wit, creativity and imagination.<br />

Specialising in signature Shangri-La cakes, macaroons, pastries, classic<br />

savouries, salads and sandwiches to eat-in and take-away, the hotel’s artisan<br />

deli and cake shop is situated on the ground floor of The Shard.<br />

such as mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas stollen.<br />
