Grass Seed 

For many decades Rigby Taylor has been collaborating with 

leading grass breeding companies to develop and provide a 

range of quality grass seed mixtures dedicated to landscape 

applications. The Rigby Taylor commitment is to provide the best 

possible seeding solutions that includes testing and 

development work at the world renowned Sports Turf Research 

Institute (STRI). 

For best results 

✳ A good seedbed should be clean, firm and have a fairly fine 

tilth, therefore cultivate and roll as required. 

✳ Use of a pre-seed fertilizer is recommended to assist fast 

establishment. 

✳ Sow your chosen mixture at the recommended sowing rate 

and depth, as seeds left on the surface may dry out and die 

soon after germination. 

✳ Keep seed and seedlings moist (but not over-watered) until 

well established.

Tetraploid perennial ryegrasses have double the number of

Euroflor Urban Flower Seed 

Euroflor is a range of flower seed products creating urban 

meadows for use in towns, communities, landscapes and 

amenity areas. 

The originality lies in the wonderful colour balance and 

species diversity and high impact. Specifically designed for 

urban settings they offer a long flowering period from spring 

to autumn.

Reinforced Turf 

Fibreturf is the name for a natural turf growing in a synthetic 

fibre-reinforced rootzone. It is specially designed to obtain 

greater use of natural turf, whilst maintaining the high quality of 

surface demanded by present day landscape specifiers. 

The aim is achieved by blending together sand, organic matter 

and 35mm long polypropylene fibres to produce a 

homogeneous rootzone, termed Fibreturf rootzone. 

This rootzone is supplied in bulk tippers to be laid as the top 75- 

200mm, dependant upon end-use, thus producing a 'fibre reinforced' 

or 'stabilised' upper rootzone. The natural turf finish is 

then produced by either seeding directly into the Fibreturf 

rootzone, or by laying mature Fibreturf which has been pregrown 

by specialist turf supplier Inturf.

Fibreturf Rootzone 

This is a blend of sand and organic matter that incorporates 

35mm long polypropylene fibres. The rootzone is supplied in bulk 

and laid to a depth of 75-200mm (depending on the surface 

use) as a fibre-reinforced stabilised upper rootzone. Seed is then 

sown as would be normal practice or laid over with mature pregrown 

Fibreturf.

We have had great success with R14 seed. It is 

extremely hardwearing, has good colour, 

recovers well and provides excellent leaf density. 

Our lines are marked out with Impact XP paint. It 

provides very bright white lines that last even after 

periods of heavy rainfall. Also the paint does not 

‘shadow’ and produces a very professional finish. 

We gain excellent control of leaf spot and fusarium 

by ringing the changes using Rayzor, Eland and 

Fusion fungicides.

How Qualgex works 

Qualgex is soluble in water, non-corrosive and safe to most 

surfaces so is an ideal maintenance product for local 

authorities, schools, commercial premises etc. Qualgex is one of 

the strongest products on the market and is a Health & Safety 

executive registered biocide. 

A unique feature of Qualgex is that unlike some other biocides, 

it is not de-activated by organic matter, consequently it will 

work effectively on dirty surfaces such as paths that have not 

been kept clean. 

The action of Qualgex is very rapid, killing algae and other 

targets upon contact, with visual effects usually being seen 

within 24-48 hours after application. The product also has a 

cleaning action that will brighten the appearance of stonework 

and similar hard surfaces.

How Chikara ® works 

Chikara is a systemic pre-emergent 

and early post-emergent herbicide 

for the control of annual and 

perennial weeds on natural 

surfaces not intended to bear 

vegetation, and permeable 

surfaces over-lying soil. 

Chikara is absorbed by shoots and 

roots and translocated through the 

xylem and phloem to the 

meristematic zone where it inhibits 

acetolactate synthase (a key 

enzyme involved in amino-acid 

synthesis), resulting in plant death. 

Many affected weed seedlings will 

not emerge above soil level. Those 

that do will exhibit yellowing or 

reddening of the leaves and 

become necrotic and die shortly 

thereafter. 

Chikara has a broad spectrum of 

herbicidal activity with control 

lasting up to 5 months against 

broad-leaved and grass weeds. 

Where weeds are established/emerged at the time of 

application always tank mix Chikara with an appropriate dose 

of an approved glyphosate formulation. 

How to use Chikara

Chikara may be used for weed control in non-crop areas, in 

open soil, or in certain circumstances against weeds growing in 

gravel or other porous surfaces.

For best results apply Chikara in early spring before weeds 

germinate. If weeds are present, tank mix with a glyphosatebased 

herbicide when the weeds are small and actively 

growing.

How Gallup Biograde Amenity works 

The active ingredient glyphosate which acts by blocking the 

plant's enzymatic system. As this system is only found in plants 

and not in humans, animals, birds or fish, the herbicidal activity 

is very specific – and effective. 

The BEAT formulation ensures the herbicide is readily absorbed 

through the leaf cuticle and is able to circulate throughout the 

plant and right down to the roots. As a result not just the foliage 

but the whole of the plant is killed. 

Gallup Biograde Amenity is adsorbed 

easily onto the soil particles so does not 

leach and is also broken down by the 

soil bacteria into harmless natural 

substances.

How Trustee Amenity works 

Trustee Amenity is the first non-irritant, high concentration 

glyphosate in Europe with full surfactant loading. This BEAT 

technology combines new standards of performance whilst 

being more environmentally friendly than other more traditional 

formulations. 

The product controls weeds by acting on the enzymatic system 

that is unique to plants and not found in

How Discman CDA Biograde works

RAINFAST 

Discman CDA Biograde is a breakthrough in formulation 

chemistry, being the first non-irritant high concentration 

glyphosate in Europe that has a full surfactant loading, BEAT, 

without using tallow amines. The formulation speeds up the 

penetration process and improves rainfastness by better 

adhesion on to the leaf surface. Consequently more glyphosate 

is able to penetrate into the plant tissue and translocate down 

to the roots resulting in a more rapid and effective kill of the 

weed. 

The high concentration of glyphosate 

(216g/l), linked to a low application rate, 

making it extremely effective and very cost 

efficient. 

Discman CDA Biograde can be used through the Eliminator 

Lance by simply connecting the herbicide bottle directly onto 

the lance. A peristaltic pump is built into the sprayer providing a 

consistent application rate with an optimum droplet size. The 

sprayer is self-calibrating so overdosing is eliminated.

How Trailblazer Trio works 

Trailblazer Trio now contains not only a temporary spray 

colourant and spray drift controller, but also water softeners,

When spraying a pesticide or liquid fertilizer to achieve an

How HydroPro 2 works 

Localised Dry Patch develops when waxy lipids are created 

from organic matter by fungal mycelium in root zones. These 

lipids coat soil/sand particles to create a barrier preventing the 

infiltration of moisture, which creates a water repellent root 

zone. 

HydroPro-2 is formulated from long chain polymer based 

molecules, where one end is hydrophilic (likes water) and the 

other end is hydrophobic (prefers the waxy coated soil 

particles). When applied to a turf root zone the molecules 

attach themselves to the hydrophobic soil particles but the 

hydrophilic end is able to retain water and subsequently rehydrate 

the soil. The benefit of using a reverse block co-polymer 

is that it is more slowly degraded by microbial activity than 

standard block co-polymers and therefore retains more of its 

wetting ability between applications. 

Application 

The recommended period of application for HydroPro-2 is from 

March to October and the application rate is adjustable as the 

temperature increases. 

In the early and late part of the season, when the temperatures 

are moderate, the standard rate of 15 litres per hectare should 

be applied. As temperatures rise and both microbial activity 

and evapotranspiration rates increase, a rate of 20 litres per 

hectare is recommended. Period between applications is 

typically 1 month.

Prevention is always better than cure 

Turf grass that has been drought-stressed will exhaust valuable

capillary pores and the Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). 

Percolation rates are increased when it is mixed with sand because 

of the non-capillary pore space within the product. Soil-based 

greens benefit by the added porosity Profile Greens provides for 

better drainage. 

Profile Greens is very stable: Stability over time is obviously important, 

especially during winter or freeze/thaw cycles. Profile Greens is 

four times as stable as USGA requirements and has been shown not 

to break down. Stable particles have been found in Purdue 

University greens 30 years after incorporation. 

Profile Greens has a high CEC: A permanent CEC of 33 meq/100g is 

provided by Profile Greens. It has a strong affinity for Potassium, which 

can leach quite readily from sand-based rootzones. Profile Greens has a 

low affinity for Sodium and in high salt areas it can therefore help 

amend the root zone by increasing drainage, allowing the flushing of 

greens of Sodium. 

Profile Greens holds water like peat, but drains like sand: Ohio State 

University proved Profile Greens' 50/50 balance of capillary and noncapillary 

pore space will retain water and also let water drain. Water is 

held within, and drawn through, the capillary pore space of the porous 

ceramic particles. The non-capillary pore space lets water flow through 

the soil if it becomes saturated. Adding Profile Greens to sands will 

increase percolation rates and improve water availability. 

Profile Greens reduces surface algal problems: Surface algal problems 

can be reduced dramatically by frequent light top dressings of Profile 

Greens. The excellent absorptive characteristics enable it to retain the 

moisture which is necessary for surface algal growth.

How Profile Field & Fairway works 

Profile Field & Fairway is ideal for any soil since its unique structure 

contains thousands of pore spaces, and when mixed into the soil 

modifies its structure. It creates air spaces, increases the percolation 

rate, has excellent capillary characteristics and prevents clay soils 

from bonding together to cause compaction. The slightly larger 

particle size provides 78% porosity of which 41% is capillary pore 

space and 37% is non-capillary pore space. 

Profile Field & Fairway is ideal for use in most amenity areas e.g. 

sportsgrounds, whilst Profile Greens should be used for high 

performance root zones e.g. golf greens, bowling greens.

Sand soils resist compaction, but they have little water or nutrient 

retention ability. 

THE IDEAL SOIL 

Ideal soil should contain 50% solid and 50% pore space. (½ capillary or 

water holding pore space and ½ non-capillary or air-holding and drainage

In the case of the environmentally responsible Eco-bag, pack 

disposal is very easy. When emptied, it is just rolled up and 

disposed of as normal household waste. 

Studies by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough 

Council achieved major savings by switching 

their pitch line marking programme from 

dilutable concentrate paints. By using Impact 

ready-to-use paint, applied by iGO 

machines, on all their pitches they saved over 

£16,000 per annum and, the additional 

environment benefit of saving over 36,000 

litres of water, which would otherwise have 

been wasted.

PreLine - The Facts 

PRELINE is the ONLY line marking paint with MAPP 

approval for use on natural grass surfaces. 

The unique formulation delivers a low 

concentration of glyphosate herbicide in a 

convenient, ready to use line marking paint 

formulation, safely suppressing, not eliminating 

grass cover. A single application through a transfer 

wheel marker delivers a constant line that will not 

“creep” and the semi-permanent bright white lines 

last for up to 12 weeks without having to re-mark. 

Health & Safety considerations are paramount when it comes

iGO Spray Boom attachment

Case Study and Cost Comparison 

CURRENT PRACTICE AND ANALYSIS 

The Street Scene department undertakes the maintenance 

of grass surfaces both in terms of those used for sports 

and recreation and others that include rural verges, 

roundabouts, road junctions, cemeteries, slopes and other 

difficult to maintain areas. 

As part of this work, research was undertaken into all 

the various practices and products that were available for 

the provision of a grass maintenance service. 

The Council’s Street Scene department maintained 25 

bowling greens and the analysis of the cost indicated that 

this was an expensive operation. 

The 25 greens required 2,160 scheduled cuts over a year 

using a pedestrian mower. The time taken to cut each 

green was 45 minutes and with a time of 15 minutes for 

loading/unloading the mower from a vehicle and box 

emptying of grass clippings this time totaled 60 minutes. 

Using the cost of the Council’s hourly labour rate cutting 

1 green, 3 times a week it was calculated that the annual 

cost to cut the 2,160 greens totaled £22,507. 

An analysis of the cost considered how the Street Scene 

department could streamline the operation without 

reducing the standard of service provided. The council 

looked at what products there were on the market that 

could be integrated with its current mowing practices, 

and Plant Growth Regulators (PGR’s) were identified. 

PGR’s have been used for many years and are organic 

compounds that when applied in small amounts induce a 

change in plant growth and development. 

A number of products are marketed for this purpose but 

the most successful was identified through its chemical 

name Trinexapac-ethyl and its trade name Maintain. 

Maintain redirects grass growth by specifically targeting 

the gibberellic acid site that is responsible for cell 

elongation. This action not only inhibits vertical growth 

but diverts it down where it helps to produce and 

increase food reserves and lateral stem development. The 

result of such application increases root growth development 

and strength, leading to a tighter, more dense 

sward and reduced opportunity for weeds to establish. 

Maintain can also be applied as a tank mix with foliar 

products such as liquid fertilizer sand selective herbicides. 

EVALUATION AND OPPORTUNITY 

Mowing: 

Trials within the Councils region established a cutting 

cycle of 1 cut per week. A Toro ride-on machine was 

procured and this replaced the pedestrian machine 

previously used. 

The time now actually spent cutting a green was reduced 

to 18 minutes plus 12 minutes emptying of the boxes 

and loading/unloading of the mower from the 

transporting vehicle. 

Therefore, the total time spent now mowing each green 

each week of 30 minutes is half what it was using a 

pedestrian mower. 

Plant Growth Regulator (PGR): 

An annual programme of the Maintain PGR was applied 

to all 25 greens. Each green was treated 5 times 

throughout the year. 

Cost of Maintain = £24.70 

Labour (1 hr*/green) = £10.42 

Cost per green (per application) = £35.12 

Total 5 applications per green/annum = £175.60 

Total cost to 25 greens/annum = £4,390.00

Manchester City Council 

Pitch Line Marking Ride-On 

Case Study and Evaluation 

Manchester City Council has some 65 football pitches 

that require marking out and speed of operation is a 

major factor. 

The City Council has been applying lines to their pitches 

using an existing Ride-On machine but wanted to test 

the new Rigby Taylor Armaline Ride On system, together 

with two paint options, Impact XP and Impact Standard. 

A major advantage of the Armaline system is that there 

is no downtime spent, measuring, mixing or pouring and 

the operator has little or no direct contact with the paint. 

Impact is supplied in 10 litre containers and no added 

water is required. An operator using the Armaline and 

Impact paint system could over-mark from 5–10 standard 

sized football pitches from just one 10 litre container. 

Also, potential surface compaction problems are greatly 

reduced. As there is no added water, the weight of the 

marking vehicle on the pitch surface is greatly reduced 

when compared to a system that requires a tank of 

dilutable paint mixed with water. This is particularly 

important when marking out pitches in the winter when 

the ground is wet, as the weight of the marking fluid in 

the tank alone can weigh over 150 kilos. 

The retractable arm has a ‘ski’ fitted on the end of the 

arm that glides along the surface, even over undulating 

ground. The spray head provides crisp lines and line 

widths can be adjusted in seconds. 

Manchester City Council’s objective was to apply the best 

lines for the most economical price. For comparative 

purposes, the linemarking test was done using two paint 

formulations through a Green (015) and a Red (04) cone 

type nozzle. 

The test was timed by a Council Operator with a stopwatch 

to ascertain the actual pitch line marking 

application time. The operator has been using an 

alternative Ride-On for a number years, so was familiar 

with the system. 

On the day of the test, it was raining and the line was 

applied over an existing ‘burned in’ line so there was 

minimal grass cover. 

The trial paint output per pitch 

Green Cone nozzle = 1.95 litres 

Red Cone Nozzle = 0.975 litres 

The time spent over-marking a standard size football 

patch was 6 minutes, 30 seconds. 

Competitive materials applied by a 

competitive Ride-On machine output per pitch 

Red Flat Fan at 1.6 litres per minute of a dilutable 

concentrate marking solution of paint and water 

= 10.4 litres 

As a result of these trials and using information supplied 

by a range of other users, it was demonstrated that the 

Armaline system, applying Impact, delivered paint cost 

savings of up to 50% per pitch when compared to 

dilutable concentrates mixed with water and applied by 

competitor Ride-On pitch markers. 

This cost saving is in addition to the demonstrable 

improvement in manual handling safety, vehicle load 

weights and improvement in line quality. 

Manchester City Council is very pleased with the both the 

quality of line and paint cost per pitch and decided the 

Impact Standard achieved their objective of combined 

quality and cost.
