From the Chair
During 2014/15 the Kalparrin Board, under the
pro-bono professional guidance of the team at
Ernst & Young, undertook a strategic review of the
operations of Kalparrin with a focus on the current
and future sustainability. The outcome of the
process was fruitful and determined some key and
necessary changes that would support the current
priorities and future growth of our organisation.
One of those changes was the appointment
of a full time General Manager to assist in the
development and implementation of operational
services which would ensure alignment and
delivery against the strategic plan. Kalparrin
welcomed Christine Stott to the General Manager
role in 2015.
In addition, the appointment of a full time Events
and Communications Coordinator has meant not
only are we are able to maintain the standard
of recreational and therapeutic support for our
families, but we can meet the strategic focus of
developing diverse income streams and building
Kalparrin’s profile in the broader community.
These key operational changes have resulted
in enhanced delivery of our services, improved
operational management of all activities, increased
profile within the hospital and broader community,
leadership within the NFP sector and of our
staff and volunteers, better governance and an
improved focus on our strategic objectives.
I would like to thank our staff and volunteers for
their contribution and dedication in supporting our
families. They have assisted our families with focus,
empathy and compassion and have embraced the
challenges and changes of the last 12 months. We
are a very lucky organisation to have such loyal and
dedicated staff and volunteers.
I would like to acknowledge and thank all members
of the Kalparrin Board for their valuable input.
There has been a lot achieved as a result of a great
deal of additional work undertaken by members of
our Board including our vice chair, treasurer, parent
representatives, key influencers and health sector
representatives.
I would like to specifically acknowledge and thank
Jenny Bourke who completed her time on the
Board and as Chair at the end of 2014 and Shaun
Murphy and Sarah Flanagan who will end their
Board term in 2015, we thank these Directors for
their valuable contribution to Kalparrin.
Thank you to our funding partners including the
State Government, Disability Services Commission,
Department of Health, Telethon and Lotterywest, to
the Board and staff at Princess Margaret Hospital,
our corporate partners, including Woodside, Atlas
Iron and Qantas individual donors, suppliers and
friends of Kalparrin.
I would also like to acknowledge the support of our
long standing patron, The Hon Barbara Scott and
take this opportunity to announce that Kalparrin
will extend its patronage with the appointment
of Sarah Flanagan and David Flanagan to join
Barbara as patrons of our organisation. Sarah’s
time on the Board and her passion for the work of
Kalparrin with David, an acknowledged business
and community leader in Western Australia, make
them wonderful additions to this role. Kalparrin is
very lucky to have the support of all three of these
respected members of the community.
In closing, to our Kalparrin families, we commit to
continue to strive to support you when you need
it most, in a timely, responsive and needs based
manner. In turn we thank and acknowledge your
contribution in supporting one another as families
of children with a special needs and Kalparrin
as an organisation. Your bravery, resilience and
approach to the challenges before you as families
is what continues to encourage and motivate us
as volunteers, staff and as an organisation to work
harder and achieve more, so we can in turn pass
that on to you as families.
