FOREWORD FROM TIM BONNER
I am sorry that I cannot be with you tonight, but thank you all for
attending the 25th Countryside Alliance New York Sporting Auction.
I thought it might be helpful to explain exactly why your support is so
important to us.
It may be difficult to comprehend from the other side of the Atlantic
but hunting, in all its forms, is becoming a defining political issue in the
UK. Fox hunting has, of course, long been used as a simplistic
shorthand for the sort of class war politics some politicians want to pursue
but cannot admit to. Game shooting is increasingly being portrayed
in a similar light. The idea that nearly a million people who hunt in the
UK represent an exclusive minority engaged in an unacceptable activity
is clearly nonsense, but the fact that it has gained significant support within one of our two main
political parties shows how urbanised our small, densely populated island has become.
If you struggle to believe that serious politicians could hold such views then the example of our
current ‘shadow’ Secretary of State for Environment and Agriculture illustrates the battles we
face. She not only believes that all hunting should be banned, but is also a militant vegan who
campaigns against meat eating and livestock farming.
However, the picture is far from totally gloomy. Fox hunting has survived the unjustified
legislation that attempted to wipe it out. The Countryside Alliance and hunts have waged an
extraordinary campaign of opposition to the hunting ban which has ensured that 10 years after
it came in to force as many hunts are operating and as many people are hunting behind hounds
as they were when it came into force. That has stopped the animal rights movement in its tracks
and allowed other forms of hunting, especially game shooting, to grow in popularity.
The Countryside Alliance exists to ensure that hunting in the UK, in all its unique and
wonderful forms, continues to prosper as part of our rural way of life. Tonight you have the
opportunity to sample some of the very best sport the British countryside has to offer with
the added benefit of knowing that every penny you spend will go towards ensuring that it will
remain available to future generations. So please bid away confident in the knowledge that you
are donating to a vital cause.
For all your sporting requirements
LOT 7
TWO DAYS FISHING FOR TWO LUCKY FISHERS ON TWO
‘GRAND DAME’ RIVERS OF ENGLAND
LOT 8
HUNTING FOR TWO WITH THE
MIDLAND FOX HOUNDS, GEORGIA
KINDLY DONATED BY ANDREW IMPEY ESQ, CHARLES JARDINE ESQ AND
SHARON MANN
This lovely lot starts in London with tea at the
London Fly Fishers Club and a conducted tour
of the archives; which include Isaac Ealton’s
Creel, G.E.M Skues Fly rod, The Mosely
Collection of insects and, of course, the
collection of historic flies of F.M. Halford. Spend
the following days guided on two ‘grand dame’
rivers of England; a day on the lyric Upper
Itchen made famous by Lord Grey and very
rarely offered to visiting rods; and a day on the
middle Test at Lower Brook that, to our
knowledge, has never been fished by a
visiting guest rod. Your host will be, among
others, Charles Jardine.
To be taken during the 2016 season. All equipment (except waders, although these can be arranged)
will be provided by the host.
KINDLY DONATED BY MASON AND
MARY LU LAMPTON
You are invited to hunt with The Midland Fox
Hounds, a crossbred pack that was founded by
Ben Hardaway. Their quarry is primarily coyotes,
with foxes and bobcats upon occasion. The
country is in the Black Belt of the South, so
named for the black soil that creates wonderful
grazing for cattle. The pastures are rolling with
large streams lined with hardwoods. The fences
are chicken coops no larger than 42 inches. For
the most part, the coyote run in large circles at
a fierce pace. It is not unusual to cover up to
twenty miles on a
run and therefore
this may be
unsuitable for
beginners.
You are invited to
stay at Mason and Mary Lu Lampton’s
