During a recent evening in 

aid of the charity the Stroke 

Association, Fellowes’ head 

was moulded by Frances 

Segelmen, the professional 

sculptor who has produced 

over 90 works for celebrities 

from the world of sport, politics 

and entertainment. The 

sculpting took place in front 

of a live audience in central 

London. 

“I like Frances’ work very 

much and I feel very flattered 

to have been asked to sit for 

her,” Fellowes said on the 

night. “I am, of course, curious 

to see what she makes 

of my bonce… I am not foolish 

enough to think that I am 

a thing of beauty so I don’t 

think there are any harsh 

surprises in store but I shall 

be curious about the overall 

effect it gives off - will it be 

one of power or misery or 

fearfulness? You do get a 

notion coming out of sculptures 

that way. 

I’m very impressed by the 

speed of [Frances’] work, 

that she can get it all done 

in one night. I didn’t realise 

that one of her things was to 

work very fast.”

Actor, novelist, TV producer and screenplay writer Julian 

Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, Baron Fellowes of West 

Stafford, is known for his interests in the great houses of 

England, through his award-winning series Downton Abbey, 

as well as his support for the Stroke Association. 

However, Julian Fellowes is still interested in our great 

houses. 

And for very good reason, because it is said that to 

understand the history of Britain that we need look no 

further than the great houses of the Kingdom. 

They were the homes of the families that owned the 

country. Yet, all of us have an ancestor or two who would 

have lived or worked on the estates. 

The fortunes of the Kingdom are reflected in the stories 

of each one of our great houses. In Downton Abbey, writer

20 houses for Wrekin 

Housing Trust near Donnington

School. Besides providing 

affordable homes, 

they wanted to include 

the younger local community 

in their plans. 

The partnership provided 

materials and tools 

for the school’s building 

site project, an innovative 

way to get Year 3-5 pupils 

engaged with learning 

maths, science, English 

and design. They’ve also 

provided high-vis jackets 

and helmets to add to the 

construction site experience.

TELFORD & WREKIN Council 

is poised to seal a deal 

with Wrekin Housing Trust 

that could result in the development 

of 10 affordable 

homes and the facade of 

Haybridge Hall, threatened 

with demolition, being 

saved. 

The council plans to contribute 

£475,000 in section 

106 funds which can only 

be used to deliver affordable 

housing, alongside funding 

from the Homes & Communities 

Agency and WHT, 

to make the scheme viable. 

The Council’s funding 

would enable much needed 

affordable homes for the 

elderly at Haybridge Hall 

which will benefit from the 

Wrekin Housing Trust’s existing 

retirement living offer 

at the Hall. 

Haybridge Hall was 

closed some years ago and 

has since remained vacant. 

Telford & Wrekin Council refused 

a planning application 

to demolish it and build four 

new bungalows in January 

this year. 

Since then, the council’s 

cabinet has approved the 

said: “The pupils will work 

outside as a team using 

their skills to build, make 

and learn. The high-vis 

vests and hard hats will 

help keep them safe and 

working with the Trust 

and their construction 

partner means they’re 

learning about construction 

and the importance 

of building homes for the 

future. We’re really grateful 

for their support.”

pleased our partnership 

with Harpers can help the 

local school whilst weíre 

providing valuable homes

to be completed by April 

issuing of an article that 

would result in any demolition 

needing a full planning

outcome of ongoing discussions 

with Wrekin Housing 

Trust to bring the building 

back into viable use.

HOW WE USED TO SHOP! 

MANY READERS 

have told me 

they like a bit of 

nostalgia, like the 

September article I wrote, so 

here is another dose for you. 

It’s an attempt to portray life 

before the Last World War, 

but after the Great War To 

End All Wars as the 1914 

to 1918 conflict was called, 

very ironically by old soldiers 

like my Dad, who also 

served in the 1939 - 45 war. 

This is not about either of the 

world wars but of the time 

between them. It is simply 

my own memories as one 

born in 1923, three years 

after the Versailles Treaty officially 

ended the Great War, 

so a schoolboy of 16 when 

the Last World War started 

in 1939. 

Between the wars Wellington 

had a great many 

more shops than now, 

though the population was 

less. Most of the shops were 

far smaller than now and 

there were a lot more people 

working in them. Before 

supermarkets swept through 

the country shoppers were 

used to being served, not 

to having to find the goods 

for themselves and queue to 

pay. For instance, Mum used 

to send me for the groceries 

to Lloyd’s shop, where 

the Co-op bank is now, with 

a list and a basket. I sat 

down and handed the list 

to a girl assistant who went 

round the shop collecting 

the goods for me. Things like 

sugar, flour and tea would 

be weighed out from a large 

container and put in a paper 

bag, folded up neatly. Bacon 

was cut from a flitch. The 

cost of each item was added 

to Mum’s list. Occasionally 

the girl might come to ask 

me about an item; usually 

I had no idea what Mum 

wanted and as I grew older 

this sometimes became an 

attempt to chat up the girl,

Shopping Between the Wars 

which rarely worked. 

When the list was complete 

the goods were piled 

into the shopping bag and I 

was presented with the bill. 

I had usually been given a 

pound note for a week’s groceries 

for the four people 

in the family, so there was 

change in half crowns, florins, 

shillings, silver sixpences, 

pennies and halfpennies. 

By the time I was around 

sixteen there were few farthings 

or three-penny-bits 

used. The basket was then 

hung on the handlebars of 

my bike and I’d ride home. 

There were things sold in 

the grocers’ shops that we 

didn’t buy. Dad grew most 

of our vegetables and fruit in 

the garden. Jam was made 

at home by Mum. Bread 

and milk were both delivered. 

The bread, by the way, 

was baked and delivered 

by Allan Frost’s uncle. Our 

newspapers were delivered 

by Austin’s from the shop 

in High Street that used to 

be Evans, Furnishers, over 

which I was born. Coal was 

also delivered for heating 

the house and cooking on a 

grate made in Ketley. It came 

in hundredweight bags and 

was often called Littleton 

nuts, usually from Gough’s 

coal wharf at the goods station; 

the wharf was where 

Morrison’s car park is now. 

Dad also bought timber from 

the Orleton estate, half a 

cord at a time, which I think 

was a pile six feet wide, four 

feet high and eleven feet 

long. We cut it up using a 

two man cross-cut saw and 

split it with a felling axe. 

It warmed us twice - once 

when cutting it up and once 

more on the fire. 

Newspapers, when read, 

were for lavatory paper or 

fire lighters. Ash from the fire 

was spread on the garden 

paths to keep the weeds 

down. There was no plastic 

except for Bakelite, made 

from fish bones. Any leftover 

food was either fed to 

the birds or went on the 

compost heap together with 

weeds, prunings etc. Grass 

was cut with a hand propelled 

mower and unless 

very long was simply left 

on the lawn to rot down and 

fertilise the soil. Well-rotted 

compost was dug in the 

ground. We couldn’t afford 

not to recycle. 

In the living room was a 

Triplex grate which cooked 

our food, heated the water 

and warmed the room. It did 

all three jobs efficiently; Ketley 

was then, as now (Aga) 

a place for the latest in grate 

technology. The floor was 

in red tiles, probably from 

Blockley’s of Hadley, who 

made some of the best. We 

were lucky enough to have a 

bathroom when I was twelve; 

before then we all had to 

share a small tin bath by 

the fire, one at a time, me 

first. The bathroom had been 

built on especially for us 

and was accessed from the 

kitchen, which is now probably 

against the regulations. 

Rainwater was collected 

from the roof into a big tank 

sunk into the ground by the 

back door; this was used for 

washing as it was soft water. 

School uniform for the 

Boys’ High School was 

supplied by Tom Grainger, 

a Methodist friend of my 

grandfather. The shop was 

in an old timber-framed 

building at the bottom of 

New Street, demolished 

in about 1960, resulting in 

the wider street in front of 

David Lloyd’s jewellers. By 

then Tom had passed the 

shop on to his apprentice, 

Norman Jellyman. We wore 

black shoes, grey long 

socks, black shorts (until 

aged about 13) and a dark 

blue blazer. Our shirts were 

white, pullovers grey, and 

we wore dark blue school 

blazers and caps with either 

one, two or three light blue 

circles sewn on them, to 

show which house we were 

in. A narrow knitted tie was 

replaced by a cotton one 

later. Caps and blazers had 

school badges sewn on. The 

shorts had double thickness 

in the seat; long trousers replaced 

them when we were 

14 or 15, by which time I was 

a man-sized boy. 

At that time everybody 

shopped in Wellington. 

Much of the decline of local 

shops is due to local people 

shopping out of town, which 

is a pity. “If you don’t want to 

lose it, use it” is a very good 

motto.

So needless to say after 

seeing this fantastic menu it 

took some deciding on what 

to choose. I eventually decided 

on the chicken wings 

to start with my partner opting 

for the black pudding, 

both arrived promptly and 

were beautifully presented 

and we were certainly not 

disappointed. The wings 

came with a salad garnish 

and a tangy sweet and sour 

dip, the black pudding was 

served on brioche toast with 

a duck egg, oyster mushrooms 

and a black pepper 

jus. 

After the starter we were 

really looking forward to our 

mains of lamb burger in a 

brioche bun with coleslaw 

and chunky chips for myself 

and 8oz sirloin steak for 

Martyn, the portion sizes are 

generous and they certainly 

don’t scrimp on quality. The 

meat was succulent and 

perfectly cooked and the 

chunky chips added to the 

country feel. The burger was 

served on a rustic wooden 

board which added to the 

country feel of the pub. 

Feeling rather full up after 

my main, I managed to 

squeeze in some desert, I 

opted for cheesecake which 

was light and fluffy with a 

cherry jus whilst my partner 

being a chocoholic opted for 

the chocolate lumpy bumpy 

which is the sweet tooth’s 

dream combining cake with 

chocolate mousse topped 

with yet more chocolate. 

A beautiful pub with fantastic 

food we are sure to 

visit again; I must add that 

the staff were friendly, professional 

and attentive – a 

lovely evening out!

D-DAY TROOPS LINE-UP 

Les Lowe from Donnington 

has provided a couple of 

amazing photographs for 

our readers to see. The first 

is of the A Platoon, 48 Company 

RASC Infantry Division. 

The photograph shows the 

men ready for D-Day in 

1944. The men look in good 


shape and Les’s beloved 

father, Ted is fourth from the 

right on the back row. 

Ted came back safely 

from the war but many 

on this photograph were 

sadly not to come back. 

Ted came back to his family 

and his beloved garden 

where we won many prizes 

for his blooms and even 

got a Silver Medal at the 

Chelsea Flower Show. The 

second photograph shows 

Ted (on the right) with a 

comrade). This photograph 

was also taken prior to D- 

Day in 1944.

THE GOOD and the 

Great of Wellington 

with their boundless 

vision tried 

to reduce Wellingtonian, 

George Evans, a courageous 

92 year old who 

has viewed first hand the 

depths of human depravity 

during the Second World 

War, seeing things the rest 

of us could barely even 

comprehend at Belsen, as 

not fit to give a reading 

on Remembrance Day; 

something he has done 

for 25 years. As someone 

who has represented College 

Ward on Wellington 

Town Council for more than 

5 years I am well aware 

of how out of touch the 

Council and their establishment 

friends are with 

ordinary people and their 

opinions, but this takes the 

biscuit. The representative 

of the British Legion, 

says George has had his 

time and must go. Presumably 

because people they 

have concluded that people 

these days have no 

stomach for listening to the 

authentic experiences of 

War. These narrow minded, 

mean spirited people have 

no right to promote our 

Town, via the Telegraph, 

the Independent and the 

Mail as a jingoistic war 

mongering back water, our 

Mayor, one of the commentators 

supporting the 

Legion’s decision, should 

resign. For those who argue 

that its up to the Legion 

to decide who speaks 

I would agree if it weren’t 

meant to express sentiments 

of the whole community. 

This event is to remember 

and contemplate 

war and its consequences. 

Wars are too important 

and the casualties too destructive 

to leave to politicians 

to deliberate. The 

Remembrance ceremonies 

happening throughout our 

country should be used to 

allow people to make up 

their own minds about the 

legitimacy of taking lives 

in warfare.

Down on their uppers 

IN THE time I now relate 

to, things were not 

very good as regards 

the general health and 

welfare of the working class 

population. No such thing 

as ‘sick pay’ or any such 

benefit was offered if during 

employment a person 

became too ill to toil for their 

employers. Well this is not 

strictly true, because if the 

sick person or family were 

really ‘down on their uppers’ 

as it was then called, or if in 

very bad financial circumstances 

they could seek a 

small financial aid from what 

was named as being ‘on 

the parish’. This was a trust 

operation to try and help 

keep a person or their family 

from starving. It was indeed 

a very last ditch stand to 

have to go down this road. 

Their pride had by now completely 

gone, when a family 

fell into this dire state. 

This serious problem 

probably lead to a lot of 

‘self-help’ remedies! Herbs 

and all sorts of almost pagan 

cures were brought into use. 

In fact, there was probably 

a lot of philosophy in trusting 

the person doling out 

the cure. Bone setters, wart 

charmers and many more 

was a useful bunch of people 

to have in your community. 

Some were indeed very 

capable and genuine in 

what they did, ‘Gifted Folk!’ 

they wold be named. In fact, 

this was probably correct 

in many instances because 

most did not charge for this 

‘gift’ that brought relief to 

the many. 

That may put you in the 

picture a little. This then 

brings me now to tell you 

of young Ronnie Price. It 

was found that after he had 

attended the village school 

for only a short time, he had 

wrongly been labelled as being 

a ‘bit dull’ (not being able 

to learn his lessons). In fact, 

his problems revolved round 

his eyesight which was not 

at all good (child welfare was 

not heard of in these times). 

‘Glasses’ (spectacles) 

were very expensive, not 

many folk could afford such 

a luxury. This was until the 

‘Penny Bazaar’ came into

ANOTHER OF George Evans’ 

articles has challenged 

my memory and prompted 

a letter from me. 

As I sit back in the Dorset 

sunshine and reflect on 

how, in 1939, I was eight 

years old and studying in 

Miss Leeds’ class at Wrekin 

Road School in Wellington. 

An excavator was digging 

out what would very 

quickly become an air-raid 

shelter, next to the playground. 

On completion, ‘drills’ 

were put into practice, but 

winter rain and snow soon 

flooded this newly-built 

shelter and tadpoles, frogs 

and the like too occupation 

causing us a distinct 

problem. 

being (probably when Woolworths 

started). It was from 

this new-fangled type of 

store that spectacles could 

be purchased straight over 

the counters. They were all 

in cheap standard frames, 

with lenses ground to give 

them several magnifications. 

This would of course help 

the wearer in most cases 

to enhance the reading of 

books, letters, sewing and 

such like. Also the flickering 

night lights were not at all 

helpful. 

In fact, these ‘glasses’ 

were handed down from one 

generation to the next and 

so forth. ‘Good enough for 

granddad, good enough for 

me was the philosophy! 

To now get back to young 

Ronnie Price, unfortunately 

his grandfather had recently 

passed away, the family elders 

in their wisdom had 

decreed it was best if Ronnie 

now had his glasses to 

wear. So perhaps this was 

fortunate for the boy. This 

made a great difference to 

his optical outlook and subsequently 

his learning in the 

classroom improved. 

One night after school, 

the lad complained that 

he was going blind and 

cried uncontrollably. Nothing 

would console him. He

home in Bournemouth. He writes. 

However, for me the principal 

highlight of pre-war 

recall is the advent of the 

newly-constructed Clifton 

Cinema. 

As a King George VI 

Coronation treat our classes 

were marched to the new 

Clifton car park and a distribution 

of a mug, plus 

sweets; then into the dark 

world of excitement, where 

a newsreel was occupying 

the screen – such a giant 

image – and moving, wow! 

The significance of this 

went over my head, but 

could not see, ‘just a blur’, 

he said. All night long the 

lad cried quietly in his bed. 

The next morning he refused 

to go to school. Nothing 

would change his mind 

– he was adamant. 

His sister took a written 

note from her parents to 

hand in to the headmaster, 

explaining Ronnie’s 

absence from school that 

day. Another strange thing 

happened that particular 

recall established it as a 

Spanish Civil War footage 

showing people running and 

screaming, bombs exploding, 

noice, all the components 

of thrill for a small boy 

and embryo train spotter! 

At the time I thought it 

was a film of entertainment! 

Little did we know how soon 

the very same scenes would 

be playing out to our families. 

Then, Saturdays! Cowboy 

films and Flash Gordon. 

I hid my eyes when the Mud 

Men came on screen. 

However, George’s recall 

of the ‘Thwack’ followed by 

hasty exit from the head’s 

office roused another 

memory but of a much later 

year. As I sat outside the 

headmistresses office of an 

Africkaan Girls School in the 

Cape, to hopefully enrol our 

eldest daughter as we were 

about to relocate to Paarl. 

The corridor was silent. 

Suddenly that distinct 

‘Thwack’ of three strokes, 

followed seconds later by a 

pupil exiting at some haste, 

desperately re-arranging 

her gym-slip and sobbing 

uncontrollably. 

A pause, doors open, 

smiling headmistress invited 

me in. And I recalled 

(as you would) a smiling 

morning, because the headmaster 

had an almost identical 

note from another pupil. 

She also had gone nearly 

blind overnight, so would 

not be attending school lessons 

on that day or any 

other, unless some vast improvement 

was forthcoming 

in her sight factor. 

The headmaster was 

rather alarmed at this situation. 

What was happening? 

Would any more pupils be 

affected? How serious was 

this outbreak? Should he 

report this to a higher authority 

or send all the pupils 

home? 

With this worry in mind, 

he quickly mentioned the 

details to the whole class. It 

was only right and fair that 

they should know the facts, 

he considered this the best 

way forward. 

It was a fortunate decision 

made by the headmaster, 

for by doing this it was to 

be soon resolved. Ronnie’s 

school pal David Griffiths, 

they sat next to each other 

at their school desk, put his 

hand up in the air to gain the 

attention of the headmaster. 

“Please Sir,” said the boy, 

his face as red as the rising 

sun. “Yesterday afternoon 

when Ronnie went to the toilet, 

for a joke I changed his 

glasses with Stella Smallwood’s, 

but they did not put 

the glasses back on again 

before going home time. I 

completely forgot that I had 

done it. I am sorry Sir, I really 

am,” the boy was nearly 

in tears. 

The headmaster had a 

moment of sweet and sour 

emotions; furious with the 

lad for doing such a daft 

thing but very glad that the 

answer was such a simple 

one. 

He sent messages to 

both of the very worried 

parents of the pupils that 

night, saying for the pupils 

to please attend tomorrow, 

where he was sure that everything 

would be put right. 

The next day this happened 

and both pupils were 

re-united with their spectacles, 

the rest of the class 

were just glad it was only 

that and not some serious 

disease that was about to 

strike the whole class blind! 

The boy who had played 

the silly prank, together 

with the remainder of the 

class had learned a very 

important lesson. Both the 

bespectacled pupils concerned, 

from that day on, 

had different coloured wool 

wound round the frames of 

their particular glasses to 

make sure they never got 

them mixed up again.

smiled, then . . .

spinsterly, grandmotherly 

attentive and duly enrolled 

our (English speaking) 

eldest, the similarity to an

phase of life in Wellington 

was deeply embedded in 

my mind! 

Rayon: a French discovery, 

pre-nylon, was the wonder 

textile. And we do recall 

a Chinese starched collar 

laundry next to Tommy Austin’s 

shop in High Street.

A lovely time spent with family 

ON MONDAY I arrived 

back home 

after a short break 

in Derbyshire, 

then in Kent, and it was really 

lovely to spend some 

time with all the relatives, 

and discuss all the family 

happenings over the past 

four/five years since we last 

spent some time together. 

It is very strange, but really 

I found the adjoining 

villages in Derbyshire don’t 

appear to have changed too 

much, and thankfully not too 

much building has occurred 

either. 

I am hoping to show you 

a photograph of the village 

in which I was born it is 

lovely there and we lived for 

some years in one of those 

houses in the long row. 

We went to the same 

chapel and school which 

all my Dad’s parents and 

brothers and sisters attended, 

and the schools are still

functioning as such too. 

It is really nostalgic as 

the little village school has 

really not changed much 

at all, and it is eighty years 

that I started there at the 

age of five. 

The family left there in 

the middle of WW11, and 

it all felt rather weird as if in 

no time at all I was walking 

and picturing all the darkness 

and restrictions of that 

terrible time. 

Anyway, to carry on, my 

niece collected me from 

my home and we drove to 

Derbyshire and later started 

off from there to her home 

in Kent. 

So I spent a few days 

with her family, they have 

seven children, the two 

youngest being seven and 

eight years of age. 

It was all so busy noisy 

and complete chaos most 

of the time, there were so 

many things happening all 

of the time, but they were 

all very kind and respectful 

to me. 

My older sister is now 

ninety-one years of age, 

and is living there also. 

However, my son collected 

me from Kent on 

Monday and the complete 

peace and quiet in my own 

home was, I must admit

very welcome really so 

here I am enjoying my 

peaceful life again. 

I am hoping to go up 

to Derbyshire again in the 

spring and I will spend 

about a week there going 

around to see all my cousins 

and their families, we 

always have a good natter 

and a few good laughs, 

as we all in turn, remember 

certain things that have 

happened in all our pasts. 

My son has promised to 

take me up there, and then 

collect me when I am ready 

to return home. 

But you see when I lived 

in Derbyshire, I suppose 

I had spent all my childhood 

years living with all 

the fears and restrictions of 

which there were many at 

that time. 

One thing springs 

to mind is the fact that 

we had to carry our “gas 

masks” every time we left 

the house, and I was secretly 

terrified of mine, we 

had a cardboard box in 

which to carry these things, 

and these boxes had a 

piece of string which we 

held over our shoulders for 

easier carrying. 

I do sit awhile sometimes 

and think of my childhood 

and my youth, and it 

all seems to be so very long 

ago now which I suppose it 

is really, and I never, ever 

want any of those times 

ever again, and no they 

were not too happy at all. 

But enough of all of that, 

I think that I must bring 

all of this to a close now 

and write more to you next 

time.

What should you do if you 

find a stray cat 

IMAGINE THERE’S a cat 

you’ve never seen before 

which is constantly 

hanging around your 

front door, crying for food 

and affection; a big butch 

tom cat who seems to be 

a stray and enjoys fighting 

with all the cats in the 

neighbourhood or a small 

kitten, wandering around 

aimlessly. Lost or stray cats 

are unfortunately commonplace. 

What should you do? 

Who should you call or approach? 

Hopefully this short 

article will give you some 

direction. 

Firstly we need to understand 

the clear definition 

between a stray and a feral 

cat. If the cat is unfriendly 

and not approachable, it 

may well be feral. Feral cats 

are more than happy and 

able to look after themselves 

without a human companion! 

Local charities carry out 

trapping and neutering programmes 

to maintain their 

population. As long as these 

cats are happy and healthy 

they will successfully survive 

outside. Injured or unwell 

animals, however, need to 

be taken to your local vets 

for assessment.

The EU’s Food and Veterinary Team are to 

meet to discuss puppy importation rules 

after a campaign led by West Midlands MEP 

Daniel Dalton. 

Mr Dalton has been campaigning with the 

Warwickshire-based Dogs Trust against the 

abuse of the domestic pets passport system 

that sees thousands of puppies being 

brought into the UK every year, many from 

Eastern Europe. 

Mr Dalton said, “The pets passport 

scheme was designed for people to take 

their pets on holiday or to move abroad and

IN A bid to reverse the 

decline in the number 

of hedgehogs within the 

UK, a UK holiday company 

has decided to team 

up with a Hedgehog rescue 

sanctuary and launch ‘The 

Hedgehog Housing Initiative.’ 

After already helping to 

create homes for the creatures, 

holidaycottages.co.uk 

are now calling for their holiday 

home owners and members 

of the general public to 

set about creating their own 

hedgehog homes to place 

within their gardens. 

After becoming concerned 

at the fact there are 

now less than one million 

hedgehogs left in the UK, 

holidaycottages.co.uk is encouraging 

members of the 

public to join its new hedgehog 

initiative. After creating 

their own ‘hedgehog home’ 

the team are asking families 

to get involved in building 

their own homes for hedgehogs, 

in order to give them 

shelter and safety from predators 

in UK gardens across 

the UK. 

Along with The North 

Devon Hedgehog Rescue, 

holidaycottages.co.uk have 

built what they believe to be 

the ideal home for nocturnal 

hedgehogs to keep safe from 

any dangers and threats that 

the typical UK garden would

room for up to four hedgehogs 

to keep warm and safe 

whilst they sleep.

slug pellets, busy 

roads, lungworm, badgers 

and dogs, a pretty substantial 

list!” 

He continued: “If you ever 

find a hedgehog out in your 

garden during the day you 

can contact either a local 

recuse centre or the British 

Hedgehog Preservation 

Society. As the animals are 

lactose intolerant, do not try 

to feed them milk, but instead 

attempt to source them 

caterpillars, beetles, earthworms, 

snails and slugs.

able to digest cat biscuits or 

meat-based cat food.”

A SHROPSHIRE steel fabricators 

has used its specialist 

knowledge to design and 

develop a bespoke drainage 

solution for a Shrewsbury 

garden centre. 

Telford-based Fabweld 

Steel Products designed, 

fabricated and installed a 

security screen and platform 

for a concrete drainage 

channel headwall grille 

as part of the new Percy 

Thrower’s, a Wyevale Garden 

Centre in Oteley Road, 

Shrewsbury. 

The multi-million pound 

project, which opened earlier 

this year, created a new 

garden centre, restaurant, 

cafe, play area and parking. 

It is named in honour 

of Shrewsbury’s famous 

green-fingered son, Percy 

Thrower, famed for his appearances 

on Blue Peter 

and Gardener’s World. 

Fabweld took just a 

month to complete the order 

from commission to installation. 

Managing Director Richard 

Hilton said: “The development 

required substantial 

drainage works and

commissioned due to our 

reputation in this sector. 

“The area around the outfall 

pipes had to remain clear 

of debris to maintain their 

operation and prevent flooding. 

We created a solution 

that would prevent a buildup 

of material and allow the 

drain to operate continually.

Mr Hilton said Fabweld’s 

experience with flooding and 

drainage issues had allowed 

it to respond quickly to the 

commission.

3D models of the product 

and detailed drawings.

scheme by PCS Consulting 

Engineers of Bromsgrove 

and designed and installed 

the trash screen on behalf 

of Birmingham’s Fitzgerald 

Contractors Ltd. The main 

contractor for the build was 

Speller Metcalfe of Malvern.

Feed the birds, not 

the squirrels 

“IF THERE’S one thing garden 

birders find worse than 

squirrels pilfering - it’s squirrels 

damaging bird feeders. 

As a nation of wildlife enthusiasts 

prepares to feed 

the birds this autumn, garden 

birders can breathe a sigh of 

relief that Haith’s has plenty of 

tricks up its sleeve to help outwit 

marauding squirrels and 

protect the nationís peanuts. 

Earlier in 2015, Haith’s 

conducted market research to 

learn the common problems 

associated with feeding wild 

birds and it came as no surprise 

to that, the grey squirrel 

was responsible for damaging 

bird feeders and taking 

more than their fair share of 

seeds and peanuts, which often 

meant birds going hungry. 

Not one to shy away from 

a challenge, Haith’s has in 

response put together a collection 

of products and strategies 

to help birders give 

greedy squirrels the cold 

shoulder this autumn. 

Customising bird feeders 

can keep squirrels guessing. 

A Bird Feeding Station allows 

bird feeders to be moved 

into open ground and away 

from trees - where the squirrel 

has to be more tenacious and 

daring to take tidbits. 

Feeders suspended from a 

tree branch can be retro fitted 

with a Squirrel Dome, which 

fits above just about any bird 

feeder. Its dome-shaped, durable 

and bite-proof polycarbonate 

surface is slippery and 

unstable to squirrels, which 

stops them from gaining access 

to a suspended bird 

feeder. The Squirrel Dome 

also keeps cats off feeders 

as they, too, canít hold on to 

the dome. 

Fitting a Squirrel Baffle 

to a feeding station pole 

stops squirrels from launching 

a successful assault on 

the feeding station as it’s too 

wide and slippery for squirrels 

to hurdle. 

For the belt and braces 

approach, a Squirrel Slinky 

can be added to feeding 

poles which further prevents 

squirrels from ascending in 

reach of the nation’s premium 

peanuts. These simple to introduce 

strategies will keep 

the birds feeding throughout 

autumn. 

If all else fails, switch bird 

food recipes! 

Swop to a bird food squirrels 

donít like - if you feed 

peanuts you are (more) likely 

to feed Grey Squirrels. Niger 

seed for example - isn’t 

appreciated by squirrels and 

the nature of the tiny, almost 

weightless, seeds doesnít suit 

the way a squirrel feeds. 

“Niger seed shows a cold 

shoulder to squirrels but itís 

worshiped by Goldfinches, 

Siskins and Long-tailed Tits. 

The problem is that, these 

birds won’t just arrive ñ they 

are the opposite of squirrels 

and require cajoling. Thankfully 

the wooing of Niger worshippers 

requires just three 

simple things: Niger seed, a 

Niger feeder and a little patience,” 

explains Simon.

Who are we? 

TELFORD & WREKIN 

Council has announced 

changes 

to its residential 

care provision for adults 

with learning disabilities. 

Currently the council has 

two residential homes - 

Downing House and Carwood. 

Both clients and commissioners 

of care packages 

are moving away from 

residential care in favour 

of independent living or a 

Shared Lives placement - a 

fostering type arrangement 

for such clients. 

While there is still a need 

for some residential care, 

overall admissions are falling. 

In the last year, only 

one new client has moved 

into Downing House and 

none into Carwood. The two 

homes will soon have eight 

full time beds vacant. 

As a result, there is only 

enough demand for one 

residential home, so the 

council proposes to concentrate 

its residential services 

at Downing House. 

Clients currently living 

at Carwood who need to 

remain in residential care 

will be able to move to live 

at Downing House. Some 

clients have already said 

they would prefer to live 

independently in the community. 

Many of the staff 

We are a group of volunteers of all ages who work 

together to raise funds for the hospital. 

Friends of Princess Royal Hospital run a very busy 

Coffee Shop within the hospital open weekdays 9-6 

and weekends/bank holiday 1-5. To maximise our 

profits we rely on volunteers to help our small number 

of paid staff. All our profits are used to buy equipment 

for the hospital trust and this amounted to 

£63,600 last year.

hours and offer a variety of duties, if you would like to

care for men and women 

aged over 55 living in their 

own homes. 

The firewalk, along with 

other fundraising events 

including supermarket bag 

packs and table top sales, 

raised money for the residents 

fund that will be to 

used to finance outings and 

events. 

A grant from Madeley 

Town Council and the Chief 

Commissioner of West Merica 

Police Bill Longmore, 

along with a donation from 

a former resident, helped 

boost the final total raised 

to £6,100. 

The celebrations were attended 

by more than 200 

residents, staff, family and 

friends and included a barbecue, 

face painting, balloon 

modelling, a steel band, 

and raffle including prizes 

from Shropshire businesses 

including Ironbridge Gorge 

Museum, Weston Park, Aga 

Rayburn and the Sabrina 

Boat.

SURVEY, conducted 

by the 

UK’s top funeral 

vehicle coachbuilder, 

has revealed the 

top ten most unusual funeral 

flower arrangement 

requests, with a full model 

of Emmerdale farm topping 

the list, followed by quarter 

scale traditional Romany 

caravan and a floral Freddy 

Krueger tribute. 

The study questioned 

214 funeral directors about 

trends and unusual occurrences 

that had been uncovered 

during the course 

of their work within the funeral 

industry. As part of 

this they were asked to 

specify unusual floral arrangements 

and tributes 

that they had encountered 

during their time in the 

business. 

Other answers revealed 

by the survey included 

TVs, motorbikes, boxing 

gloves, boxing rings, cans 

of lagers, cigarette packets 

and even a cannabis plant. 

One anecdote revealed an 

unfortunate misspelling of 

the person’s nickname, 

Winker. 

Leila Wilcox of Wilcox 

Limousines said: “We often 

see some very poignant 

tributes in our line of 

work that tend to relate to a 

person’s interests and passions 

or, frequently, their 

profession. For those working 

in the funeral industry 

it’s quite common to see 

some rather unusual examples, 

however sometimes 

we see requests that even 

manage to catch us by surprise.” 

She concluded: “Despite 

the sometimes unusual or 

seemingly random nature 

of some of the tributes we 

see, it’s worth recognising 

all of them are specific 

and special to the person 

they’re remembering. We 

see some fantastic tributes 

and people go to great 

lengths to try and capture 

the personality of the person 

being laid to rest.”

are being given one more 

reason to quit, as a new 

Government law that came 

into force. Making it illegal 

for anyone to smoke in vehicles

Telford returned to the 

Bucks Head to tackle Stalybridge 

Celtic, where following 

their improved performance 

at Boston there was 

a sense of optimism around 

the stadium. Smith’s men 

were quickly into the game 

and were snapping into the 

tackle. It was however not as 

a result of their endeavours 

but a dubious penalty decision 

that was to see them 

break the deadlock. 

Hibbert was shepherding 

the ball away from goal 

when he went to ground, 

pushed according to the referee, 

but there appeared to 

be minimal contact. Sean 

Clancy was determined not 

to waste this piece of good 

fortune and stepped up to 

plant the spot kick into the 

corner of the net. Clancy 

was again involved soon after 

as Telford doubled their 

lead. The ex Fleetwood man 

feeding Hibbert after receiving 

the ball following Mc- 

Carthy’s surging run down 

the wing. Hibbert’s scuffed 

shot finding its way into the 

corner of the net. 

The fourteen hundred 

crowd sensed only their 

second victory of the season 

and celebrated accordingly. 

With a two goal in 

advantage Telford never really 

looked likely to lose their 

grip on the three points. 

Partly due to the work of 

impressive captain Paul Mc- 

Cone and a fine save from 

James Montgomery. 

The home tie with Boston 

United saw Jake Hibbs 

make his debut. In a first 

half dominated by Telford 

the 19-year-old certainly 

made an impact. The Bucks 

were quick into their stride 

with Hibbs impressing. In 

a whirlwind start it did not 

take long for them to find the 

net. Robbie Paratore curling 

the ball home from the 

edge of the area after just 

five minutes. Telford were 

on fire and pressurised the 

Pilgrims constantly, Hibbs 

and Paratore both having 

good chances. Boston almost 

levelled against the 

run of play on the half hour 

as Piergianni headed onto 

the bar. 

The lead was doubled 

moments later, Hibbert chasing 

onto Montgomery’s long 

clearance to fire home gleefully. 

As was the case seven 

days previously Smith’s 

men had deservedly raced 

into a two goal lead and the 

expectancy was that once 

again they would go on to 

collect the three points. This 

time though it did not go as 

planned. Things turned just 

before the hour mark when 

the hitherto excellent Hibbs’ 

enthusiasm got the better 

of him and he flew into a 

tackle. 

The referee had little 

choice but to hand him his 

second yellow card of the 

game and the Bucks were 

down to ten men. Piergianni 

turned in the resulting free 

kick to halve the deficit and 

soon after the scores were 

level when Dayle Southwell 

prodded home a left 

wing cross. Initially Boston 

looked like they would take 

the spoils as they poured 

forward. But slowly Telford 

took the sting out of the 

game and following the introduction 

of Rowe from the 

bench began to threaten 

themselves. To their credit 

as the game neared its end 

it was Telford who appeared 

the most ambitious and at 

the final whistle the most 

disappointed of the two 

sides not to have claimed 

victory. 

A 

MONTH IS a long 

time in football. 

Four weeks ago 

AFC Telford United 

boss Rob Smith accused 

his team of having no heart 

and no quality but since that 

dressing down his players 

have done plenty to delight 

their fans. Recent performances 

have seen the 

team produce full on, high 

octane fare as they seek 

to pull themselves from the 

lower reaches of the table. 

Smith has overhauled his 

squad and brought in players 

that have reignited a 

buzz around the New Bucks 

Head. 

In football there is an old 

adage that you should never 

go back, but Smith is back, 

and so is some of that long 

lost spirit. And boy aren’t
