Lifts of the Monument of the Mexic<strong>an</strong> Revolution, Mexico City,<br />

Finished in 1938, the Monument of the Mexic<strong>an</strong> Revolution, me<strong>as</strong>uring 67 m in height, is still considered<br />

the tallest triumphal arch in the world. To facilitate access <strong>to</strong> the dome <strong>an</strong>d make it more attractive for<br />

visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> the museum underneath, a lift w<strong>as</strong> added. Among the competing concepts, <strong>an</strong> eleg<strong>an</strong>t yet<br />

unobtrusive design w<strong>as</strong> finally selected which remained essentially respectful of the symmetrical layout<br />

of the building. It involved a filigree, tr<strong>an</strong>sparent steel-<strong>an</strong>d-gl<strong>as</strong>s lift shaft which rises right in the centre<br />

of the square monument. The mixed material design encomp<strong>as</strong>ses a carbon steel load bearing structure<br />

which is clad with stainless steel. The full metal design is also beneficial from a safety point of view<br />

because it is <strong>to</strong>ler<strong>an</strong>t <strong>to</strong> seismic activities. Also the <strong>an</strong>cillary structural components such <strong>as</strong> the gl<strong>as</strong>s<br />

holders <strong>an</strong>d other f<strong>as</strong>teners <strong>an</strong>d the h<strong>an</strong>drails are from stainless steel.<br />
