Kit Kat Culture in Japan
Many of you might have heard about the Kit
Kat craze in Japan, but… Did you know there
are over 200 different flavors of Kit Kat? Mind
blown. Japan launched its first special edition
Kit Kat (strawberry) in 2000, and has not
stopped creating more peculiar flavors since
then. The flavors range from delicious mouthwatering
flavors such as blueberry cheesecake,
maple syrup and banana, to the more
traditional exclusive Japanese flavors such as
Kuromitsu (Japanese brown sugar syrup),
Ramune (Japanese soda) and Matcha (Japanese
green tea). If you thought these were weird,
take a look at the ones I found!
Here is a list:
By Jie Hu Zhao
o
o
Vanilla Ice Cream Frozen Chocolate: not
only can you bake Kit Kats, but you can
also freeze them!
Edamame beans: the famous Japanese
green beans converted into Kit Kat!
o
o
Wasabi and Soy sauce: now you can have
your sushi with Kit Kats!
Purple Sweet Potato: don’t be intimidated
by the fact that they contain potatoes; they
are delicious!
If I still haven’t scared you away with all
these weird flavors, congratulations. Here’s a
surprise for you. If you want to find more
about Japanese Kit Kats, there is a Kit Kat
Boutique located in the district of Ikebukuro,
Tokyo, called the Kit Kat Chocolatery. It is a
paradise of endless Kit Kat flavors.
o
Bakeable Kit Kat: these Kit Kats cannot be
eaten raw, you have to put them in the
oven and cook them before. (Yes, I’m
serious).
Greeting in Asian Languages
By Glory Choi
Hello everyone! In this section we will teach you how to speak
and pronounce Asian languages! Today we will learn greetings
in many different languages.
In the past, having a
lighter skin meant that
you didn’t work outdoors
and therefore, lived in a
higher social status, but
now… It has just become
a popular trend! – Yeri
Choi
Korea / China is different
from Spain in many ways;
for example, we usually
have our dinner at 6
o’clock, but Spanish people
have theirs at 9 or 10
o’clock… This really
shocked me the first time! –
Glory Choi
Why do East
Asian people
like pale skin
so much?
In what
ways is
Korea/China
different
from Spain?
The thing I miss most about Korea is
the ‘Noraebang’, also known as
Karaoke. It’s a private room
designed for people to pretend like
they are on an arena stage in front of
their friends, families, etc. It’s very
easy to spot a noraebang in Korea,
and it’s very popular among many
students. – Jaho Kim
What is the
thing you miss
most from your
country?
Why is
Chinese New
Year in
February?
Although the Chinese do use the
Gregorian calendar on a daily basis,
they also follow a lunisolar calendar
when it comes to traditional
holidays. That’s why the Chinese
New Year is celebrated around the
“Gregorian February” – Jie Hu Zhao
Q & A Section
What things are
normal for
Spanish people
that are extremely
offensive in Asian
Culture?
By Eliseo Castellanos
Spanish people tend to
have parties, talk very
loudly and hang around
late night, partially due to
their late dinner culture;
but in Asia, it may be very
rude to make loud noises
late at night. – Hyewon
Entertainment Shows
in Korea
By Hyewon Hong
In Korea, there are numerous rising
Entertainment shows that are in the center of
interest and popularity, especially between
teenagers.
Auditioning programs such as Superstar K,
Voice Korea and K-pop Star are the all-time
favorites of all ages and genders, even
extending their popularity to other Asian
countries.
Tourism: Laos
By Grace Hwang
Isn’t this place just wonderful? This is the
marvelous Kouangxi Water Fall from Luang
Prabang, Laos.
Although people have different opinions, I
believe that Laos is one of the top 3 places
people should go for a vacation (in Asia). The
reasons why you should visit this fabulous
place are the following:
Variety shows, such as One Night Two Days,
Infinite Challenge and Running Man, are also
very famous because of its humor and filled
context. Many celebrities of Korea appear in
these shows as guests and share their personal
interests, personality, make themselves more
familiar to people and gain more popularity.
o
o
The food market:
Like many people know, Asian food is
delicious! Especially when it comes to
visiting the food markets. The traditional
Lao cuisine is the following: Khao Piak
Sen (a Lao noodle soup), Khao Jee,
(baguettes), Laab Moo (pork salad), Tam
Mak Hoong (Papaya salad), and Yall Dib
(Spring rolls).
The caves and waterfalls!
A new rising show named Masked Singer is a
program where celebrities and singers appear on
the stage with a mask, without showing their
identity, and competing to win the show, only
with their skills and voice.
In this season of Choo-Suck, a.k.a. Korean
Thanksgiving day, new entertainment shows
have been introduced, such as Idol Sports
Competition, in which young singers and band
groups compete in track and field, basketball,
futsal, archery and swimming.
o
And lastly, the Mekong River sunsets.
