Introduction
Background
The original version of this book was produced in November 2012, when the Ag Excellence team
noticed that while increasing numbers of farmers were adopting smartphone/table technology,
finding suitable apps was very difficult. It was our intention then to provide a booklet which gave
farmers information about what apps were available and how the use of these could benefit them.
Wherever possible, we have downloaded and road-tested the apps in this publication. However their
inclusion in this booklet is not necessarily an endorsement of them; we are simply letting you know
what’s out there.
Version 2 has been produced for the simple reason that the original edition was out of date almost as
soon as it was released. The world of apps is a fast-moving one, and in updating the publication, we
found many apps whose information (price, file size, features) had changed, quite a few which were no
longer available, and many, many new apps.
This publication is provided free of charge, in the interest of promoting the use of smartphone/tablet
technology for improved management of farming systems. However, if your group wishes to share
the resource online, please seek permission from, and acknowledge Ag Excellence Alliance Inc. when
doing so. In some cases, permission may also need to be sought from the authors (Growing
Solutions).
Some tips on finding good apps:
It is always advisable to check ratings and reviews before buying an app, particularly the more
expensive ones. Bear in mind though, that some customers might have had a negative experience
with the app because of issues with their device, network, or limited understanding of the app’s
function, and then leave an unfavourable review. So while it’s wise to check them, they’re not always
completely reliable.
Many Android apps are not available for all Android devices. However if you search from your device,
you will only see apps which are compatible with that device. If you prefer to search from your
computer using the Google Play Store (formerly Android market), logging in before searching will
ensure that you will be notified as to whether that app is compatible with your device.
Some apps reviewed are from overseas and although they might not be as relevant to all users, it was
felt they may be of interest to some. Where the content is exclusively from another country, we have
noted this with these icons:
Most of the iPhone apps reviewed here are also available for use on iPads. In some cases, you can use
one app for either iPhone or iPad, in some cases, there is an app for each, and in some cases, the app
is available for iPad only. These are noted using this icon:
